I recently moved to NYC and needed a dentist for an emergency crown situation. I was referred to Dr Bar and Dr Smith by a dear friend as being the best dentist in the city, oh was he so right! I was able to get in and the office staff was friendly beyond words, put me at ease and took care of me from the moment i set foot in their lovely offfice. They were able to do crown prep and placement on the same day which was a dream!! This is not a fun procedure and Dr Smith was so gentle and caring to ensure I was comfortable through the process. I went two times for regular cleanings. On my third visit, they said I needed a deep cleaning (done to remove tarter below the gum line) They showed me the x-rays, and pointed out the build up, especially on one tooth. I am a nervous patient but the hygienist was very nice, the procedure was painless, and took less time then I thought. So why the two stars? Three weeks after, I went to an Endodontist for a root canal and they too took x-rays. The Endodontist pointed out tarter buildup, especially on one tooth. Same tooth Bar & Smith showed me. When I mentioned I went for a deep cleaning, he asked if they took x-rays AFTER to ensure they didn't miss anything. Which they did not. So while the hygienist was nice, and the procedure was painless - I still have the same issues I had before. read more

I don't know what some of these reviews are talking about. I had an amazing experience with the dental hygienist and Dr. Tyler Smith, DMD. Backstory: I hadn't gone to the dentist since before the pandemic and was very nervous that I might have a lot of cavities. When I got there, the dental hygienist was comforting and gentle, and Dr. Smith was very knowledgeable and reassuring. At the end of the appointment, the Patient Care Coordinator came into the room and went over each aspect of the treatment plan with pricing and recommendations. (It also turns out I didn't have any cavities, and just got some prescription toothpaste.) TLDR: I'd been putting off going to the dentist for almost five years because I didn't want to deal with the judgment or cost, but everyone here was great. Highly recommend. read more

The last time I had an appointment at Bar & Smith dental, I was told that I had nine cavities. I found this to be crazy considering that I had gone for my regular cleanings and never had issues like this in the past. I had heard that some dental offices sometimes scam their patients by lying about cavities and unnecessary procedures. To get a second opinion I had recently went to a new dentist and was told I only had one cavity. Bar & Smith dental was trying to scam me by lying about my cavities and even pointing out a filling I had done the year prior as a new cavity. They tried to sell me all these expensive products (prescription toothpaste, treatments, etc) saying it was necessary however at the new place I was told that none of that was needed. I would stay away from this place at all costs as they will lie to you to steal your money! read more

This is for scheduling and not for the dentist/hygienist: I booked an appointment for next week on ZocDoc and specified cleaning. They called me back the next day and said they had no availability. When I checked Zocdoc again, there were numerous available appointments even today, but when I called back, the receptionist said those appointments were not for cleanings. The receptionist was polite and did try to offer another appointment soon, but I have a busy schedule (which was why I scheduled for a particular day on ZocDoc) and this whole process was the opposite of convenient. read more

I really would never have imagined I would use Yelp to review a dentist but Dr Bar and Smith are hands down the best dentists I've had the opportunity to work with. I used to be a patient of Dr Ort who used their space previously and he was a good dentist, but the difference under the new management is night and day. Both practicing dentists at this practice are young men with degrees from UPenn. They are incredibly friendly and spend far more time with their patients than the avg dentist. They answer questions honestly and I did not feel like they were trying to sell me on optional dental treatments as many other practices do. Furthermore the cleaning I got was the most gentle one I have ever experienced. Really I'm disappointed I will be moving in the next few months and can't continue to use them for my dental care! I booked an appointment with Dr. Smith last minute on ZocDoc. The office was very communicative and sent me an email right away after I booked. The instructions provided were very helpful. Checkin was easy and simple. The receptionist was exceptionally friendly. The visit itself was actually enjoyable and thorough. They have a very friendly hygienist who took her time to get to know me. Dr. Smith was funny, warm, and provided me with a fantastic cleaning experience. I was really impressed the doctor is the one who does the cleaning. There was a mishap with my insurance and the office was extremely prompt to correct the insurance error, which wasn't their fault. They went above and beyond to call me with an update, even though it was really for the insurance company to do. I would highly recommend this practice. read more

I've got to say -- I've been around the block in the NYC dental world for the past eight years. Some of the practitioners out there are shady, shady, shady! I had a great dentist growing up, so when I moved to New York I began searching for my new home dentist. I'm picky with what I want in a dentist, and I hold them to a high standard. Little did I know it would take YEARS. After having treatments done in other offices, and refusing services in the rest, I have finally found a great practice in Doctors Bar and Smith. I called for my appointment and was scheduled for the following day. Over the phone, that first call was a little awkward and I wasn't totally sold on the customer service (but I was nervous and rambling a bit so maybe that was part of it!) Stephanie scheduled me for the following morning, and emailed me new client paperwork to fill out. Seamless. On arrival, any qualms I had about the service or the practice in general were quickly relieved. The office is small, but clean and organized. I was greeted immediately (so friendly), information was taken right away, and I was back in the exam room in six minutes. I don't really have anxiety or fear of the dentist; however, if you do, this place is where you belong. I first met with Yvonne, who was great and totally disarming - she put me right at ease and was so friendly. Made notes of why I was in and sent the doc my way. I saw Dr. Smith, and we discussed an urgent issue I was having. He explained every option and answered all of my questions. Didn't try to upsell me. It all felt very transparent and honest. I got the sense immediately he was all about honest, quality care. I was then scheduled for the following day for a procedure. I had literally NO pain at the appointment or now (3 days later), except for some very mild soreness one can expect from having a tooth taken out of your head! Stephanie at the front desk is an insurance wiz and put me right at ease was any insurance or cost questions. She definitely knows what she's doing and how to maximize your benefits (and this coming from someone who works for a health insurance company - I don't even understand my own benefits half the time.) I had to find a new dentist for insurance reasons and was very anxious about it as I have had some terrible experiences with Dentists. From Dentists who acted more like used car salesmen trying to sell me work, and treatments I did not need, to the charlatan who insisted that I needed a tooth pulled that turned out to be perfectly healthy when I went to another dentist. He was trying to sell me an implant. Awful. Ended up with an emergency, terrible sensitivity and a root canal that was 1/2 done so I had to find a dentist fast. Ended up booking an appointment at Bar and Smith Dental; turned out to be a great decision. Booking an appointment was easy and the front desk people are polite and super professional. I was seen on time, early actually. I felt comfortable after talking to Dr. Smith for about 30 seconds. Dr. Smith's bedside manner is outstanding. He listens, he asks you questions, he is easy to talk to and personable, he diagnosed my sensitivity issue quickly and painlessly. Discussed my 1/2 completed root canal. Front desk sat down with me afterwards with a treatment plan and an estimate that did not give me palpitations. Overall a very pleasant experience and let's face it, going to the Dentist is not always a pleasant experience. Returned two weeks later to get my root canal completed. Not something I was looking forward to but not dreading either based on my previous visit. Seen on time again, Dr. Smith and his assistant went above and beyond to make sure I was comfortable during the procedure. Procedure was fast, efficient with zero discomfort. I had an excellent appointment with Dr. Bar, and I highly recommend his dental services. It was been quite a while since I have been to a dentist. My gums were sore, and I am not the most regular flosser, so I was very apprehensive about my appointment with Dr. Bar. When I arrived for my appointment I was pleasantly surprised. The office is beautiful and the staff is warm and friendly. I arrived at the office a few minutes early, and they were ready to see me immediately. As I knew would be the case, my gums were not in the best shape. Not surprisingly, I needed a scaling. In my past experiences, the scaling procedure was very unpleasant. However, Dr. Bar performed the procedure in a way that was gentle and very tolerable. In addition, Dr. Bar used a new technique to reduce the swelling of my gums, which I had never seen before. The inflammation went away in a few days. Unfortunately, I also had a cavity (not surprising given how long it has been since I have seen a dentist). Dr. Bar made room in his schedule to take care of the cavity immediately after my cleaning, so I would not need to return to the office a second time. Most dentists make their patients return for an additional appointment. I am VERY scared of dentist drills, and was very apprehensive. However, Dr. Bar with his kind demeanor made me feel comfortable. He completed the procedure with such a gentle manner that my nerves were put to rest (without using laughing gas)! It was all over so quickly. After the appointment, Dr. Bar spent time with me discuss my dental hygiene practices. He made some helpful suggestions, so I would not have the same problem with my gums the next time. In summary, Dr. Bar is an excellent dentist. In fact, my experience was more pleasant than with any other dentist that I have had. I highly recommend Dr. Bar. read more

Dr. Bar will scam you out of as much money as he can -- DO NOT USE THIS DENTAL OFFICE! On my first visit, I was given an estimate on the various treatments I needed to have done. I was assured that Dr. Bar was in my network but when my Explanation of Benefits arrived from my insurance company, I learned that Dr. Bar had charged me as an "out of network" doctor. When I asked him to go back and correct the claims, he refused and said, "It doesn't matter, it would all cost the same anyway" (NOT TRUE, I would have paid significantly less had he correctly filed my claims). On my first visit, I was also told that I would have to pay a "one-time fee" of $250 -- I was subsequently charged 3x that amount. Dr. Bar is ingenious, rude, and greedy. Seriously, save yourself the stress and find another dentist. read more

I've been a going to this dental office for the past 6 years and have enjoyed it's "suburban feel" and the "old school" charm of the prior dentist (Dr. Ort). Dr. Bar took over the practice about a year ago, and seems to have only improved upon the prior practice: sprucing up the decor, friendlier staff, modernized processes, and exceptionally gentle and thorough cleanings. I had a wonderful experience at Bar and Smith Dental. As a medical professional myself, I can attest to Dr. Bar and Dr. Smith's genuine attention to detail and care for their patients. They are constantly telling me about new advancements in dentistry and how they have a constant desire to improve care. They both have a true passion for what they do and that speaks volumes. From the moment I walked in the door the staff was very inviting and took the time to even call my insurance for me to figure out which dental plan I had. In no time--this past visit, Dr. Bar greeted me and his other patients. He explained the plan to me and the hygienist and ensured everything was covered by my insurance. Shortly after, I was in the back getting my teeth cleaned and also had x-rays. Everyone seemed very knowledgeable and astute to concerns I had of bleeding and inflamed gums. Dr. Bar was excellent and explained to me the ways in which I could improve my oral care. He also recommended Invisalign retainers that are covered by my insurance to keep my teeth in place since I've had braces and even gave me some whitening gel as well. I was worried about getting that pasty mold in my mouth to make the retainer and was amazed that they used this high-tech scanner to scan my entire mouth to form a 3D image. That was too cool!! Glad I didn't have to gag over that. Lol. I thought I was just going for a regular cleaning but they exceeded my expectations. After my experiences, I now look forward to going to the dentist and trust they will do the best job. Now I'm recommending them both to all my coworkers and friends!! read more
