Love this place, is fun! The setting is pretty unique. The only issue I had was that most of the stuff on the menu is spicy, so if you like spicy food this is the place for you. I had Ahi tacos, YUMM!! It was delicious! It came with a fruit salsa, never had anything like it, life changing cause now I want to make my own fruit salsa. Lol My friend had the cuban burger, she said it was delicious, it was pretty big and juicy looking too. We didnt wait too long for our food, it was about 5 tables busy and only one waitress/bar tender, we were happy about it. I recommend this place, totally will be back. Asked for ID then said that all of our ID's were fake and that they were too flimsy, we were told that we had to go and we couldn't eat there. Wow, my husband surprised me with the dinner spot tonight knowing this was a place we wanted to try. It is very unassuming from the outside but the ambience inside is cozy and romantic. We shared a spinach salad and a baby lobster roll. Both were delicious. I got the smoked duck breast which was the star of the show. The spicy sweet citrus broth was to die for, I couldn't stop eating it. The duck was the perfect rare-ness and tender. It was probably the best duck I've ever had. Portions, portions, portions! You will not leave Bar Bistro feeling hungry. The portions are extremely generous and often enough for 2-3 people to share. Came here for sit-down dinner during COVID. Started with the highly rated deep fried brie following other Yelp reviews, and it lived up to the hype. The "fried" portion was a light pastry dough that didn't overwhelm the cheese, and the cheese was perfectly warm and oozy. For mains, I had the Korean BBQ ribs and my buddy had the soft shell crab sandwich (see pics). The ribs were surprisingly excellent, fell right off the bone, and the sauce had the right amount of kick (they are spicy, so be aware if you don't like heat). For the full rack, an entire ear of grilled corn seasoned with lime, pepper, & cheese, and a side of fried potatoes, onions, and bacon(!), at $26 this was a stellar value. I would return simply for this dish whenever I am looking for a ton of food! My buddy said the soft shell crab itself was good, as was the side wedge salad, but the combination of fried crab and bun was a bit overwhelming on the carbs. This place seemed quite fancy which was bit of surprise for the region I was visiting. I anticipated smoke filled air, loud sports on TV, and dingy setting. So it took me as a very pleasant surprise it was none of the above! The server was polite and attentive, and menu was varied. I was curious of spicy prawns, as I imagined juicy plump shrimp popping in my mouth. The presentation of the food was layer of bread which was tender on the inside and crunchy on the outside, with 5 large shrimps. I also had asparagus cream soup which was light green color which contrasted the red main dish - and I was quite stuffed from appetizer and a side. I was curious of white cauliflower risotto, but I'll have to save that for a next business visit. The bar is not very big, but there were 3 empty tables when we walked in, yet they told us at the door the bar was full. This is also what we have heard the last couple of times we tried. The restaurant part where they don't offer happy hour was totally empty. They seemed a bit snooty when we said we only came in to try their happy hour and a burger, not their sheshe dinner and wine. A perfectly decent place for a meal and drinks, especially if you're already in the Midland area. Bar Bistro is clean and chic outside though there aren't any windows so it feels a little stuffy. Service is pleasant though it can be hit or miss. One time in particular, my party was seated in the corner on a busy night and we couldn't flag down our server for about 20 minutes after we were ready to order. We saw her wandering and cleaning tables before she remembered us and came by. She apologized however and put in our tickets immediately so food didn't take long to come out. I've eaten here a handful of times and each occasion, I haven't been super impressed with the food. It always just seems to miss the mark. For instance, the frisee salad came so overdressed, the frisee was limp and not curly (sad), meatballs were too crumbly and soft, bloody mary meal had yummy fixings but the actual drink was bland. I always leave filling full but with the feeling I could have had a better meal elsewhere for the price. Overall, there aren't too many choices in the Midland area so if I find myself there hangry, I might return. If I'm elsewhere in Tacoma, there are definitely better places to spend your time and money. read more

Bar Bistro never disappoints. I have been here several times. One of my favorite restaurants. The food is excellent and everyone is so welcoming! The cocktails are so pretty and delicious! Kids are welcomed in the dining area. Started off with the deep fried brie. One of my favorites! Presentation and flavors with the fresh fruit is amazing! The lobster roll was yummy and light. We came for Tacoma Restaurant Week specifically. I myself have been a couple times before for a drink and tacos, but never a full course meal and with a slew of dishes amongst us all. Holy cow.... were we impressed. My mom and I are foodies, trying different cuisines and various flavors whenever we're able to. We each (four of us) tried one of everything for the appetizer and the main course (apps: avocado salmon toast, calamari, smoked pork street tacos - main course: halibut, lamp chops, tri tip) WOWZA! I haven't been to Bar Bistro since 2020 due to the pandemic. So glad I came back tonight. Bar Bistro definitely did not miss a beat. The risotto was perfectly executed with a slight buttery taste and balanced texture. The paella was excellent, although I wish the chef used bomba rice. The seafood, however, was perfectly seasoned. The paella could use an upgrade of better sausage though. Pork chop was tender, not dry at all. And the cheesy polenta was a welcomed take on a classic with root vegetables hovering in the background. My wife had the Campfire cocktail which reminded me of a chocolate martini. Excellent mixologist. I had the mocktail with rosemary. Perfect for those who don't want alcohol. The beignets were satisfying especially with the mascarpone/chocolate blanket. Personally, I think the campfire cocktail pairs well with the beignets. The cheesecake was a nice way to end the night, light and fluffy, with a moist graham cracker. Let me start by saying whoever is making the food is the only reason this restaurant hasn't gone out of business. The food is INCREDIBLE, but the service is no good. Also, they have TVs at the bar and it sort of throws off the restaurants ambiance. The servers just all seem like a deer caught in headlights... rushed, no order, waiting on drinks, we always sit and have to wait for someone to even get things going for us. The whole thing is a mess. But that food... I'll be back just for that. But I don't know how many more chances I can give this place if the service doesn't get better. read more

We came here for the first time on our anniversary. As other reviewers have mentioned it's in Midland on a corner. Didn't feel particularly unsafe. We parked behind the restaurant. Inside, the lights are dimmed and there are 4 TVs. Two have music, and the two others have sports. We chose to dine in the dining room. Our waiter was very kind and knowledgeable. We had made early reservations (4:30pm on a Sunday) and it wasn't too busy. We ordered the bisque and baked brie as appetizers, followed by the paella, and the 4 (5?) cheese mac n cheese. We ended with the beignets and the carrot cake. Everything was absolutely delicious and generous (the baked brie really could have been a shared plate for 2). I took 3 boxes home (brie, mac n cheese and dessert) and when I opened up the brie box the next day, they had beautifully arranged the brie, and fruit. I was astonished. They surprised us with a "Happy Anniversary" written on the plate the carrot cake was served on. Hubby's Cab was very tasty. We were all around very impressed and will definitely cone again. Came here for dinner on a Saturday and was not too busy. Pleasent atmoshper. Was greeted as soon as we came in. Staff were friendly, our server was helpful and gave me a few recommendations when I asked what was good between x and x. Had the deep fried brie for an appetizer. That really should have been a dessert option. Good but was super sweet. Will still order again. I had the pork cheeks and boyfriend had the cajun duck. Girlfriend took me here for my birthday dinner. Id give it 4 1/2 half stars if it let me. It was close to perfect as most of the food was some of the best I've had but there was a few minors. Here's my review: The ambience was nice. Not too brightly dimly lit. Really well designed inside and out. The service was good but could have been slightly better. Now for the food: I attempted to order the bone in ribeye but they were out so I ordered the filet with pave potatoes and asparagus instead. My girlfriend got the boneless ribeye with chorizo hash and Brussel sprouts. My daughter got the crab mac n cheese and we got a charcuterie board for the table. The charcuterie was my favorite out of all the places I've ordered one around here. All the cheeses were fantastic as were the meats. For our entrees: I ordered my ribeye medium rare and it came out medium which was still fine and didn't want to wait 10 minutes forbanither one so I ate it. It was still pretty great especially after melting the chipotle butter on it. My asparagus was nicely seasoned and cooked perfectly. The pave potatoes were the standout for me. Im determined to make them at home now. My girlfriend ordered her ribeye medium rare and it also came out medium. She also ordered iced tea with her drink which she said taste like it had gone bad so got lemonade instead. I thought her ribeye was pretty amazing and better than my filet. Her chorizo hash and Brussel sprouts were also on point. My daughters mac n cheese was incredible. Some of the best I've had in a restaurant. I have heard about this place for a couple years and because it had pretty stellar reviews we decided to give it a try. Our order consisted of the crab cakes to start, paella for the main and beignets for dessert. We shared everything. Crab cakes- very dry and didn't have much flavor. They honestly tasted as if they were purchased pre-made and frozen then thrown into a pan for a couple minutes. Paella- this was not paella, honestly. Overcooked saffron rice was placed in the bottom of a skillet which had some seafood placed on top of it. The seafood was decent quality but was under seasoned and the rice was very dry as if it had sat under the warmer for hours. Beignets- these are supposed to be light and airy but were instead pretty dense and all you could taste was the dough. The most disappointing part of an unsatisfying meal out is getting a very overpriced bill. 1 app + 1 main + 1 desert was $80 with tip. While I am willing to pay any amount for an incredible meal, this restaurant was pretty substandard and am disappointed it was so expensive. Very unassuming building in the middle of a light industrial section of Tacoma. Maybe not the "best" neighborhood in Tacoma but I did not feel unsafe at 7pm on a Saturday night in February. Upon entering, we found the restaurant to have a large open dinning area which maintained a comfortable noise level throughout dinner and the decor was a clean masculine wood and metal in keeping with it's neighborhood yet it was balanced with soft touches that made it a comfortable environment. Our server, Michael, was welcoming, conversational and knowledgeable about the menu. He was able to provide great guidance on preferences and options without making us feel like his recommendations would surpass our eventual decisions. He deserved a great tip. The food was very enjoyable for the price point and the neighborhood. I have recently been disappointed by paying way more for a substantially underseasoned meal. They are not afraid to season at Bar Bistro and I appreciate it. Be prepared that the spicy prawns are spicy as advertised but they are excellent! I had the duck with collard greens and they allowed me to sub in creamed cabbage for the mashed potatoes in keeping with a Keto eating plan. The duck was well cooked and enjoyable, the greens were tender and had that nice balance of seasonings and vinegar and I have never had creamed cabbage before but I really enjoyed it with a creamy bacon and light cheese flavour. My husband had the cuban and said, while he has has better in Miami, it is the best cuban he has had in this area. He had sweet potato fries in the side and they were lightly salted and fried to perfection. My husband enjoyed perusing the bar selection and a quick conversation with Eric, the owner. He noted a nice selection of bourbons (some highly allocated) he is interested in coming back to sample. Don't let the location fool you.
