Dining at Bar George was one of the highlights of our quick 24-hour layover in Montreal. We stayed at Le Mount Stephen Hotel without doing much research on dining options, assuming we'd just find something nearby. But before even checking in, we had to walk through Bar George ~ and instantly knew we wanted to eat there. We were lucky enough to grab a last-minute reservation, and Julien took a good care of us throughout the evening. His recommendation of the Beef Wellington was spot on (it's already one of our favorite dishes), but this was hands down the best we've ever had. I ordered the lobster risotto, which was excellent with just the right amount of spice. My son had the 10 oz striploin steak with homemade fries (chips), and it was absolutely delicious. I also loved the Canadian touch of coarse salt on the steak, plus the option to choose between Béarnaise or peppercorn sauce. Julien also mentioned their pastry chef placed second in a NY competition, and the desserts absolutely lived up to that reputation. We tried the pineapple and coconut pavlova and the "lick me hazelnut" ~ both beautifully presented and incredibly delicious. We also ordered iced coffee and a latte, and noticed something interesting: this was the second place where we found Canadian coffee to be smooth and mild ~ such a nice change from the often bitter, over-roasted American coffee. Yes, dinner was a bit steep ($300+), but it was worth every penny. Between the rich history, stunning design, outstanding service, and unique cuisine, I would highly recommend Bar George. Bar George is a stunning contemporary British restaurant located in Montreal's historic Le Mount Stephen. While the restaurant is highly celebrated and located within a Michelin-recognized hotel building, it does not hold a Michelin star of its own. But it is extremely classy. We decided to do lunch instead of dinner and it was a little more our speed, but if very, very attentive waitstaff is not your thing and $200 for lunch I'd skip this spot. We went because it had reviews for amazing beef Wellington and my husband hadn't had any in decades. And we were on vacation so let's go! The food was beautifully plated and service was impeccable inside of an amazingly decorated dining room that looked like a library in a mansion. The meals themselves weren't obscenely expensive but add a glass a wine, bread (it was not included) and coffee and it put us close to $200. But it was a great experience and I had never had beef Wellington - it was melt in your mouth good. Might go again next time we come up from CT. read more

Overall, I really enjoyed the food, ambience, and service here. We ordered the Beef Wellington and Striploin. The Wellington was very tender and tasted good. The Striploin could have been a bit more tender but the sauce that came with it was very tasty. We also had the fries which were good and the rapinin which was ok. The service was quick and fairly good. We also enjoyed a bottle of French red to go with dinner which was great. The prices are on the high end. The ambience was nice and overall, a nice change up from our usually go-to of french bistros when we visit Montreal. read more

Amazing birthday experience with friends! I came here four years ago and I didn't want to come back to Montreal without coming to Bar George! This time I came with friends! They LOVED IT! Said it may have been the best restaurant experience they ever had. Would certainly come back. If I could give the manager of special events zero stars, I would have. We called two weeks ago and discussed a private event for 30 people on July 10th, and after speaking with the manager, we followed up with voice messages and emails to no avail. Today we called, and she finally picked up the call, only to tell us this date is now not available and to ask us to pick another date. I don't recommend this place for anyone. Okay, full transparency. I went here and did not stay. I was looking for a nice quiet lounge like atmosphere to wind down from a busy week of travel and meetings. The bar and lounge fit my needs perfectly. I oh so wanted to stay for a drink or two. However, they had a house DJ spinning music. We already had dinner reservations, but we also had bar bites as our room was being prepared and breakfast the next morning before we headed out to Quebec City. All of the food and drinks we had were very good but my favorite dish was the chicken roulade. It was seasoned well and plated beautifully. The bar and restaurant are warm and inviting. Service is relaxed and on the slow side, so if you are in a hurry you might want to mention that to your server. We enjoyed the slow paced meals since we weren't on a specific time line. read more

Went to this place as my fancy dinner for my first trip to Montreal. The vibe of the hotel is a cool mix of history with super hip. I felt a little underdressed when I first walked in, but then I saw a guy wearing Oakleys and a ball cap and felt better. The service was impeccable, and they never made me or my children feel out of place despite our wardrobe. It was during Jazz Fest so I think there were a ton of artists in the hotel. I ended up having the beef wellington while my 9-year-old had the filet mignon. My wife got the Truffle pasta. All the food was very good, but it was not spectacular. One of the most amazing bar experiences we have enjoyed in many, many years. So much so that we returned three nights in a row while staying at Mount Stephen. The dining experience was off the charts! The most balanced lobster risotto dish I have ever consumed. My husband's Beef Wellington was melt in your mouth delicious. The service from Max was stellar in the dining area while Emma and team created a dynamic yet intimate lounge experience night after night. The cocktails are superb and the wine list just right for any evening. The room has charming little cubby areas to hide off in with your partner or side rooms for groups of friends to enjoy lively conversation. There are so many good things I have to say about this place. I will start with; there is a reason it's always full and it's worth the wait. The architecture of the building is timeless and beautiful - go to the bar and the restaurant and if you can take a look at the hotel. The ambiance is warm and inviting BUT Canadians and everything in Montreal just BE that way naturally - especially compared to New York...so let's skip the obvious and move to the important part... The drinks and food are simply stated; IMPECCABLE. Starting with the oysters, super fresh and incredible. There is fresh scotch bonnet sauce that was one of the highlights of my meal. It has a high Scoville score and isn't for the faint of heart. It's punchy and bright - with a colorful island forward flavor. I was literally pouring it on everything I could. Try it if you love spice. It's so amazing. The only reason I think the chef hasn't bottled it is because he hasn't fallen prey to American capitalism. That sauce would FLY OFF OF SHELVES. It needs to be on hot ones as one of sauces that kicks you in the ass but still has amazing flavor. The truffle gnocchi was artfully made; equally light and pretty filling without being heavy. I suggest getting the bread with it so you can soak up all of the sauce. I literally struggled to maintain composure and not lick the sauce off of the plate. The BG salad was perfectly dressed. The octopus is fresh and unexpected and the crudo has a coconut forward refreshing flavor. You can tell there is a Mauritian influence in the food that brightens everything up and gives the meal this unique tropical edge. Onto dress code...there technically is not one - but this is for the cute girlies with love. Don't wear anything tight. I inhaled this food and Unfortunately for me, I wore a corset to dinner which I almost busted open. For much of the dinner I was really focused on not actually exploding because I didn't want the constriction to stop my enjoyment. I even had to lean back in my chair like a 19th century Victorian monarch who couldn't breathe following tight lacing...think Bridgerton meets Kirby. I learned my lesson and will definitely be back with more food appropriate attire next time. Something flowy perhaps. Maybe even a bib... We were staying at Mount Stephen so made a reservation for Bar George for our first dinner after a 6-hour drive. The hotel itself is in the tower behind the original mansion while the restaurant is within the original structure. The ambiance is unmatched from the grand staircase to the architecture of the beautiful restaurant. The large steak tartare that comes with fries was the perfect starter to go with the drinks. Although on the pricier side, the beef wellington was worth every CAD while the chicken roulade was just okay. This restaurant is in an old mansion. The woodwork and character of the place is unbelievable! You should take some time to walk around and enjoy yourself. Especially upstairs! The staff here is magnificent! Everything was flawless, except for the time they brought me the wrong beer once . But that was rectified immediately. Everything we ate here was delicious. From start to finish the care and affinity from the kitchen staff was obvious. The cream of mushroom soup was amazing . The oysters were outstanding. The caviar service was the best we've ever had. As I was at O'Hare airport in Chicago, someone overheard me talking about going to Montreal and the told me they had a blast and gave me places I needed to check out. Bar George was the first thing that came out of his mouth as I mentioned I love carefully crafted cocktails. He also mentioned the burger was amazing. Made it to my hotel around 6pm so I dropped my bags and freshened up a bit. I checked OpenTable and they didnt have reservations available until 9pm. It was 6:30 and I was hungry and thirsty so I figured I would just show up. Once my Uber made it in front of the building, I was greeted by a doorman as I exited the car. I looked up and was like wow as its an old mansion transformed into a hotel/restaurant. The inside is pretty impressive! I had to wait about 10-15 mins to get a bar seat and it was worth the wait. I of course went with a mezcal cocktail known as The Last one which includes tequila Patrón reposado, mezcal Del Maguey, cordial bleuts & eucalyptus and lime. A very good cocktail and I had a couple. Crowd here was very vibrant as I saw groups, couples and singles enjoying themselves here. I took the guy at the airport's advice and ordered the burger in which the bartender told me eh its ok lol! Well...disappointing. In town with 12 friends for the Habs vs Penguins game and did some bar hopping in downtown Montreal. Heard about this place, walked in and was super excited (you can tell by the pictures how impressive it is)...such an unbelievable atmosphere. Cool vibe. Old style, mixed with a hip crowd and music. But...they treated us like garbage. The bar was empty besides 4 people, we assumed we could just sit at the bar (like most places at 3pm on a Wednesday!) but nope...not "allowed" and after the behind the back eye rolls from the bartender (my friends saw it) and she let us know annoyingly "did you check with the hostess?" We went and found a seat. So the hostess...who was evidently annoyed with us as well, threw us a bit more shade as she seemed to go out of her way to seat us...again, it's not like the place was "buzzing" with busy-ness??!! So we sat down...got our drinks, the espresso martini (weak!!), mystic triangle (good!) Dark & Stormy (too much alcohol)... So here we are...in a magnificent atmosphere, living our best life on a Wednesday afternoon in the great city of Montreal...getting treated like crap and served expensive "meh" drinks. It was a former private home (mansion) with a grand staircase, stained glass and two beautifully decorated rooms for the restaurant. The service was fantastic, attentive, friendly and knowledgeable and the food was even better. We split the grilled eggplant as an appetizer and it was incredible. So much flavor, different textures and honestly eggplant has no business being that good. For the entree I got the beef wellington which was well worth the price tag. The presentation was like art and the dish was cooked perfectly with lots of different savory flavors. It is not an inexpensive meal by any meals, but given the quality of the food, service and ambiance, I think it is well worth it and would definitely go back. read more
