I have lived across the street from this bar for years - I happily watched them expand their footprint from Mojo Mousse to Goyana and now the sister restaurant run by Johan. I used to eat there often and go for drinks with friends but I will never go again. Why? They are destroying their neighbors' summers with their massively overcrowded Open Streets festivities. I have no grudge with live music and a party once in awhile, but every weekend the block is crammed, making life awful for the people who live here. If you care about NYC neighborhoods and tenants rights' do NOT support this business. They took a good thing and made it toxic, disruptive, and disrespectful. read more

Like many of my favorites in East Harlem, the space here is very small. But the food is large in flavor and quality.

Bar Goyana overall was very good, but the main dish didn't stand out to me. However, I would be back to try everything that I liked as it was pretty solid. My friend and I had the chips and guac to start which was good- the guac didn't taste puréed/fresh out of a jar which I don't like. We also got the pao de quiejo which was tasty- I would definitely opt for the stuffed ones next time though. For our mains, we shared the beef stroganoff as we had eaten before. This unfortunately fell short for me as it lacked flavor and didn't feel like an authentic Brazilian dish to me. FWIW, the drinks were tasty to compensate for the lackluster main dish. I forgot our server's name but she was very sweet and attentive. I would come back for the appetizers and drinks. read more

I went here with a group around a week ago or so for Restaurant Week which is one of the reasonably priced ones in the city being three courses for $30. This is a small Brazilian place with a bar connected to a Belgian chocolate mousse place called Mojo Dessert Bar which is why they have that as dessert here. The staff was friendly though there wasn't really enough people so they took a bit to serve everything with some people getting their food a bit later than others but it's a casual spot so I don't mind. It was a bit hot inside even though the fan was on and the seating was slightly cramped with a large plant at the corner which doesn't really work with people trying to get in. To drink I had a caipirinha as it was happy hour. I believe it was $12 or so and I got the lime one and it wasn't that good. Couldn't really taste the cachaça at all and I probably would try a different cocktail next time. For the appetizer choice, some of us got the Coxinha or chicken croquette which had a a light green sauce on the side. It was pretty good with tender chicken and a soft batter and the portion was good with two pieces. I've had better such as at Rio Market but it was still solid and the sauce was fresh. Another person got the Pastel or as described their version of an empanada (with a choice of beef or cheese,) which came with one piece, one person got their unique twist on a Pao de Queijo/cheese bread which was cut in half and stuffed which had three small pieces, and one person got the Pineapple Da Goyana which came out very quickly. They all appeared to enjoy their appetizers. For main dish, I went with the Feijoada listed as the Brazilian National Dish consisting of a black beans and pork stew served with the usual accompaniments; white rice, collard greens, farofa, tomatoes, and orange. Their version was just OK outside of the good portion size for RW. The vast majority of the pork in there was sausage which had a smoky flavor with a handful of small pieces as well. It was a lot less varied compared to some other Brazilian spots I've been to (such as the excellent Nelore among others) so it lacked textures and was just a bit one note. The sides helped cut down the richness of the stew (particularly the farofa/toasted cassava flour) and it was overall good but not great. A person across from me got the Bobó de Camarão or shrimp and cassava stew served with white rice and the same farofa. I tried a bit of the stew which had a good thick texture as expected from the cassava with some light coconut sweetness and there was plenty of shrimp in there and I thought overall it was better even from the small taste. One person at the table had the Chicken Stroganoff consisting of chicken and mushroom stew with white rice and crispy potato sticks which they enjoyed. Dessert as noted was from Mojo Sweets; a Belgian chocolate mousse place connected to here. We came by this Brazilian restaurant to continue birthday celebrations. I loved how you felt the culture and authenticity as soon as you walk in. They have beautiful murals and intricate lights hanging to create a unique ambiance. I ordered the Brazilian Mojito, which was nicely made and fruity flavored. The dinner menu is mostly small plates and a few entrees. I tried the FEIJOADA which is the "Brazilian National Dish." I enjoyed the Black Beans and Pork Stew. The collard greens were sliced and lemon flavored. I didn't finish the meal because it left me wanting more. I came here with my mom twice the place is very cute and hidden, it's like a Brazilian cocktail bar with bites. I must say that the cocktails I tried are not bad, pretty good for the area. We tried a mezcal cocktail it was pretty tasty, I tried a rum cocktail Mai tai this one was okay too sweet. We tried a couple of tapas the guacamole was pretty good, the cheese with truffle and honey was not bad but very basic. We tried the croquette and they were good the only thing I was not a fan was of the empanada not the best. The service is friendly but very slow to check in on the table to get refills. I wanted to get more drinks but getting my server was a bit hard to catch attention I feel like this place would be more busier if they improve their customer service skills and even be able to recommend and explain the drinks. This is an adorable small little gem in East Harlem. The portion sizes are very generous so if you're planning to eat family style keep this in mind. We took a lot of left overs home. The strawberry mango salad (salada tropical) was my favorite after the hazelnut praline mousse. There is a cute outdoor eating area. I came to this restaurant with a group of 5 people initially for drinks but it turned into dinner. We were asked if he had reservations when the restaurant was empty which was interesting. This is my first time going to a Brazilian restaurant that wasn't a steakhouse and it was an experience. Some of us ordered small plate tapas. I wanted an entree so I explored new flavors with the shrimp dish that had powdered yuca and rice. My Love had Black Beans Pork Sausage Stew over rice with a side of collard greens that had lemon juice drizzled on top of it. Everything tasted great. The powered yucca is an acquired taste and texture but im glad i tried it. I ordered the Moscow Mule and asked if they could passion fruit juice in it and it tasted amazing which perfectly balanced at the meal. The ambience is cute and intimate. So cute! It's like you're downtown but you are absolutely uptown on 100th and Lex. A hidden gem! Grabbing a drink with my husband and loving the outside space. Chairs are super comfortable and ambiance is sweet. We both got a You Made It Uphill and we deserved it after walking up that damn hill. Mezcal was terrific and presentation looked rich. We ordered the bread with prosciutto and cheese and the braise rib bruschetta. Delish! Beef in the bruschetta was so tasty and made for the perfect bite. I loved Bar Goyana. I have been there twice since posting this review. The staff is very personable and will help you pick out what you want because there are so many delicious options. The waiter is great. I wish I got his name! The cocktails here are really the stars of the show for me. The Caipirinha is amazing - full of flavor and perfectly mixed. If you can, spring for the version with Leblon. You literally don't taste the alcohol. I also think you should try the caipirinha,at least , once because it's a Brazilian drink and Bar Goyana is a Brazilian spot. My favorite food items would have to be the crab cake and the chicken pot pie ( I cannot think of the actual name, but this is how it's described on the menu). The crab cake was a different texture than I was used to but had great flavor. The pot pie had a really delicious crust and a solid filling on the inside. But to be clear, nothing here was bad. I enjoyed all of my food. Looking forward to going back and getting some of my faves but also trying some new things. We also got to meet the owner because he was working when we went. This will be a hit in this up and coming neighborhood that has many great casual restaurants within a couple blocks. Upbeat Brazilian music playing and intimate seating that allowed chatting with friendly people at neighboring tables if you're feeling social. This was the first time I've chatted with "strangers" since the pandemic, and met a handful of really nice people close to us talking about the amazing food, drinks and more. There are also a few tables outside the patio dining area for customers, which included some solo diners, small groups, friends, families and couples. Background. The business name is a tribute to owner Jacqueline's hometown Goiania in Brazil. The owners are a husband and wife team who also own the neighboring Mojo Mousse bar, with the husband Johan being the Chef at both places and receiving features in New York Times and other publications. Ambiance. The outside seating area has a well crafted woodwork design, adorned with pretty white lace draperies, some plants and a tree draping over the top. (The plastic bananas, lemons and parrots added to the outside area take away from the classy ambiance in my opinion, but still very nice.) The cute and cozy inside is festive Brazilian, designed by a Brazilian interior designer, a few pieces of artwork featuring three famous, female Brazilian creatives and a mural painting as a focal point with the quote from Brazilian Poet Coda Coralina, "We cannot add days to our life but we can add life to our days." Food and drinks. A Brazilian mixologist designed the cocktail menu. - The Belgian Fashion, an old fashioned made with bourbon and chocolate bitters from Mojo Mousse, was delicious. What an interesting twist to a favorite cocktail. Served on a wooden coaster and with a piece of chocolate on the side - You Made It Uphill, a tasty, fruity mezcal cocktail served with a cute flower and miniature clothing clip. Very nice touch. For the delicious tapas, we had: - Beautifully presented, generous serving of seasoned pineapple, garnished with a pretty flower on the side. The mysterious seasoning includes a very light sea salt and was fantastic. This was a hit, a must order, and everyone in our vicinity ordered it. - Mini Crab Cakes (Owner/ Chef Johan's specialty). Delicious, lumped crab meat. I am very particular about crab cakes and often do not like them; but these have small chunks of crab, and a tasty sauce that made them the best I have had. - Stuffed Pao de Queijo. Heavenly miniature Belgian pasty puffs from Mojo's stuffed with herb cheese and prosciutto. These were amazing. Recommend for an upbeat Brazilian cocktail bar. read more

Goyana is a Brazilian-inspired cocktail bar created by Jacqueline and Johan that brought us MOJO Mousse Bar, the first mousse bar in America. The cocktail program was created by the talented Danielle Espindola that is also a Brazilian native. The first thing on the cocktail menu is the Caipirinha, the national cocktail of Brazil, made with Cachaça. Not familiar with Cachaça? It is a distilled spirit made from fermented sugarcane juice. Caipirinhas are one of those refreshing cocktails that would remind you should be on a beach with your Out of Office notification turned on. The signature cocktails on the menu also include tequila and mezcal-based options and signature cocktails such as Moscow Mule, Negroni, Mojito, and more. You will also notice a variety of Belgian beers on the drink menu because the co-owner, Chef Johan is from Belgium. The food menu comprises small plates that pay homage to Brazilian and Latino cuisines. One of them is Empandao de Frango, a savory Brazilian pie that reminds me of chicken pot pie but with a more flaky puff pastry outside. Crowd favorites include Pineapple da Goyana, Guacamole, and Queijo Coalho. Queijo Coalho is grilled curd cheese topped with Black Truffle Honey can be seen on each table in Bar Goyana, and is clearly a crowd favorite. On the weekend, brunch is offered, and there is only one thing on the menu: Feijoada. The first time we ate there was for a friend's birthday. There were about 10 of us. Everyone had a great time and enjoyed their meals. The second time we ate there, there was an engagement party with about 25 guests crowded into the larger room. Truly high vibrations at this super cute Brazilian eatery on the upper east side of NYC. If you are into Brazilian cuisine, you won't be disappointed, especially if you try the Guacamole, Pao, Feijoada, and Pineapple skewers (surprisingly simple and delicious). They also have lovely mocktails for those #sobercitizens amongst you. The food took a little longer than I'd hope (more than a half hour) to arrive, so I had to rush. On the plate with the fixings for the Feijoada, I wanted the collards to be richer, maybe with olive oil or butter, and definitely needed more flavor (garlic/onion). The shred on the collards was perfect, but they were pretty flavorless (I know this was to catch the flavor of the stew, which it did well.) Similarly, I wanted the tomatoes to have a bit more flavor. I may be partial because one of my favorite Brazilian restaurants had these incredible sides, like pickled hot peppers, onions and tomatoes, and I wanted a little more spice on the plate. Fantastic cocktails and food and exceptional service and ambiance. For food, ordered the bruschetta, guacamole and chips, crab cake, and the passion fruit and dark chocolate mousse. All were excellent. For drinks, ordered the summer seasonal Loosy Goosy, Vera Veroe (spelling might be off; first item on cocktail list), and the Goyana. Not overwhelmingly sweet and very flavorful. I suggested this place for my daughter's post Central Park wedding champagne toast and appetizer spot. It couldn't have been a better choice. They had beautifully prepared the outdoor seating area to accommodate our party of around 20. The selection of appetizers, drinks and champagne pacing was perfect, as was the dedicated "server". Absolute hidden gem in the city. I almost didn't want to write this review because I wanted to keep this place to myself, but I simply can't. It's that good. We discovered it about two months ago and have been 3 times since (which says a lot considering the number of options in NYC!). It's tucked away on a street in the UES but once you walk in, you feel like you're back in Brazil! It's the perfect date night spot or happy hour with friends to enjoy DELICIOUS margaritas!
