Came here for an after dinner drink on Saturday night. The place was hopping and we got the last table available. Our waitress was friendly and didn't mind that we weren't ordering food. She made sure our drinks were refilled but we did not feel pressured to order more. The beer me u was extensive, and we were surprised at how few US microbrews we saw on the menu (we all love beer and frequent breweries, so we see a lot of different beers!) the food menu was on a chalkboard on the wall, and it looked good, too- reasonable prices and solid options. Not fancy jut for the sake of being trendy. Note that the bathrooms are downstairs and are quite cramped. There was also very little toilet paper, and no extra under the sink. It seemed clean, but the lack of supplies makes me think it's not serviced regularly. read more

I was told by a friend that this place had a lot of great craft beers on tap, but when I got there the selection was beyond anything I could have imagined. Immediately I'm handed this clipboard with about over a dozen pages of which I spent 5 mins flipping through before getting to the food items on the last two pages. If you're in a hurry to go anywhere I would not suggest Barhop as this is a place that you want to stick around and try every single beer. The wait staff was extremely knowledgable, our waitress helped recommend and narrow our drink choices from the large list based on our taste preferences. I went with a Belgian IPA and would have stayed for more if I did not have another event to attend. I guess its about time we get to the food portion of this restaurant. Not one of your average pub fare kind of places, the menu contained classics like burgers and fish and chips, but also included snails, oysters and other items of unusual flair. I had the Fish and Chips which came with coleslaw and tempura fried green beans. It was a great amount of food for the price. The menu can be a bit overwhelming, especially if you're not a large connoisseur of different types of beer. As I mentioned before, if you're in a hurry, this might not be the best place to go, but I would still try to squeeze in a visit anytime I am in the Toronto area. One last comment, my friend got the burger and the patty was cooked medium rare, which to me is fine, but everyone has different taste preferences and my friend (who is not a fan of undercooked meat) was never asked, it was only assumed. The food is ok but not the highlight, you would come for a drink and maybe end up eating versus the other way around. So far in my first five minutes in, I couldn't get the beer I wanted, couldn't get a seat, couldn't get the Thai basil sauce for my mussels order oh and almost got smoked in the dome by a wooden box which did spill my beer all over the table. Checked this place out after work on a Friday with one of my besties. Absolutely loved it! The service was amazing, the staff were hilarious, and trust me, in a place this busy, you need to have a sense of humour. We were seated at a small rail of a table at the end of the bar, facing the street. Since we were right next to the bar, it was really crowded, but not to worry, our server moved us to a primo table on the patio as soon as it became available. We had a couple of drinks and some food. I ordered a pear cider and it was delicious, my friend ordered a beer. She let me try it and it tasted like basil and citrus, really good! I ordered fish and chips and she ordered duck mac & cheese. I was disappointed with my order because the fish was salmon - who would bread and deep fry a piece of salmon? It was gross, but you know what? I inhaled it because I was starving. Besides, the patio table, the delicious cider, and the smores beer I washed everything down with more than made up for it. My friend's mac & cheese was delicious, though could have used more duck meat. We will definitely be going back! read more

I was here a couple weeks ago doing a day trip to Toronto for the Jays game. We started our night here. First off the food is delicious, however the servings are tiny and the prices are pretty high considering. Their beer selection is great and has different kinds from all over the world. Stopped in on a Saturday for late lunch. Overall service was decent, despite it being very busy - gave good (though wrong) opinions. They had an impressive beer selection. I ordered the burger and asked for light dressing on the salad. The server described it as great - it wasn't. It was good, flavorful and totally fine. But not great. There fries are amazing as well The beer selection can be very overwhelming but talk to the staff they will point you in the right direction....there is so many beers, there is something for everyone. What can be said about this place that already hasn't been said! Our party of 6 arrived here at 6:30 on a Friday evening and we were seated immediately at the end of the restaurant. Even though the place is pretty small it was loud and packed and soon a line was forming on the street! Our waitress Jenna was also nice, quick and efficient keeping our glasses full and table clean. Now for the part that everyone's been waiting for! The beer menu is vast and the food menu is delicious! Tried the Side Launch Wheat Ale and this fruit beer that was delicious (tasted like fruit punch with a beer like after taste) along with the regular shots and mixed drinks. The fish and chips were delicious as were the house mussel's in a Thai basil sauce. The fried oyster and crab Po Boy sandwich was fresh but a little on the smaller side. All in all come for the amazing beer menu, good food and trendy downtown vibe. Not a great first date place as it's pretty small and tends to get loud.! The 4 stars out of 5 only because at the end of the night some in our party got a little loud and we were just given the bill basically asking us to leave. I don't visit Toronto often, so when I do, I usually prefer to mix it up and try completely different places. But, through a combination of always staying downtown and the overall greatness of BarHop, I always end up here. I'm a beer snob, as a subcategory of being a general snob. Between the two, I've always found a home here. As far as beer menus go, in my experience in Ontario, either here or BarVolo are the tops. Both focus heavily on big Belgians, which appeals to adventurous, funky craft beer seekers, though I might hope for a little bit more of an American selection. But I'm nitpicking. It's a terrific and ceaselessly changing list, at least based on the five or six times I've visited. The food is just as quirky as their beer selection, in the best possible sense. It's general pub fare, but always uniquely twisted, be it with a novel ingredient, or simple but pretty plating. They're known for their mussels, and for good reason. I've had the lager jerk mussels and was extremely satisfied. Generally when some protein is drenched in a powerful flavour, like jerk, it's done to mask something. Maybe their mussels aren't fresh, maybe not, but I definitely don't care. The sauce is so spicy, so good, and so easily enjoyed with the provided bread or fries alone, that it's worth the price of admission, especially on Monday when they have a deal on mussels. Today, I stopped in for a pint and a light snack. I had the snails and bacon on toast, and two Ontario craft brews. All were great. The toast also featured their smoked tomatoes, which were truly and slowly smoked, yet still juicy and moist inside. The service is knowledgeable, professional, yet casual, and again, this is a trend I've noticed in every visit. You can always chat with the server or bartender about what they've been drinking and why, and they constantly tug at my heartstrings by wistfully wishing they were at Michigan beer culture level. Whether you're in for a daytime private pint, or engaging in a night of libations with a larger group, it's really a great place to try. I've enjoyed their draught selection, as well as several items from the small or large bottle list, and I've never been let down. It's small, dark, and almost always busy. Between that, an A+ beer list, and a very efficient and informed staff, it's hard for me not to give a five star review. Would recommend the mussels, the oysters, (which aren't necessarily the best in the city, but are definitely the best value, especially on Tuesday), as well as the garlic doughnuts. I had the Kentucky Tea cocktail - 1 oz vanilla infused four roses bourbon, oolong fruit and kombucha tea, lime, sugar, lemon wheel - which was $11. It wasn't strong and tasted pretty good, but I thought it was overpriced for only getting 1 oz of liquor. The beer selection is quite extensive, so I think if you're a beer fanatic, you would enjoy Bar Hop. The service was okay. There's only one word you need to know: beer. This is a beer paradise. They have a constantly changing, but always large, list of beers on tap including: - Ontario craft beers - Quebec beers - cask beers - beers you have never heard of (i.e. beers brewed with beets or dates) The ambience is alright - it's a little dark without any memorable decor. I guess they're really focusing all energy on the beer. In the summer you may be lucky enough to grab one of the 2 small tables on the patio. The tables at the front of the bar aren't a bad alternative with the doors/windows wide open. The back of the restaurant is a little sad. I haven't tried the food, but some friends said it was pretty disappointing. This was within a week of their opening, so I'd give it another shot to see if they worked out the kinks. **EDIT I originally mentioned that Barhop and Smokeless Joe's had the same owner. An update because I believe they followed through since my last review. Yes, my original review was 4 stars and that's pretty good. Since then, they've personally messaged me apologizing for the bathroom while not asking me to reconsider my review and such nonsense. Last Sunday, I called out Johnson last minute and we went for some drinks to partake in $5 Session Sundays. Drinks were still great, food was still tasty, service was still friendly and informative. And yes, the eau de washroom smell has been fixed. I'm actually very impressed at their fix. I've never been to a bar where the bathroom area actually smelled fresh. And it wasn't the gross "air freshener masking the odour" smell. It was very clean! Bravo Barhop! 5/100 read more

Fantastic jalapeno perogies. Great beer list. I had the Rochefort 10 here, which I had trouble finding at other good bars around the city. They have an extensive Belgian beer list, which you can't go wrong with. The food was all great bar food to eat with belgian beer. The mood is great, I could bring friends there, or my family, and did both. It's subdued with walls that look kind of like black chalk board color, and it is not too loud at all. Definitely would recommend stopping by here if you have friends who like really good food, or really good beer, because this place nails both of those perfectly. read more

You get $1 oysters with the purchase of a beverage on Tuesdays, came here for beer and oysters after work. Probably not the smartest dinner decision I've made (12 oysters and a beer). The wait is kind of long and unpredictable even if you're first in line for the next table, but thankfully there are many spots along the bar for you to hang out while waiting for one. You can have a beer and eat some oysters while you're at it as well, I ended up leaving before my group got a table. I can here for the craft beer week event. Surprisingly this is my first time, but it won't be my last. I drank loads of craft beer from their event list, but the regular tap list is filled with a great list. The fact that there's 36 rotating craft beers on tap + 2 casks and over 100 bottles makes this a place you can come to over and over. Not only that, but a section in their beer list for 'gateway' beers shows who they are catering to. Their gateway list is also not so bad. I would choose some of those on occasion. Along with the great beer is a nice food menu. I tasted a few dishes, but ordered a pie for myself. It was pretty tasty, but too much cheese in my opinion. It was also huge and it came with a really tasty side salad. I will be back for sure. read more

Busy and casual place, in a good way! I came in on a Sunday evening because they were close by where I was staying and I saw in Yelp review they had oysters. Much to my dismay, Sunday nights they clear out the raw bar and make way for their LP collection of records. Though I was disappointed about the oysters, it was pretty cool to see the bartender working his tail off taking orders, serving drinks, and spinning some great tunes. So upon his recommendation I ordered the fish and chips, and it was the BOMB! The batter was unique and very crisp/crunchy. It came with fries and a nice slaw. I ordered the single portion, which was plenty of food for even the hungriest of chaps. Oh and they have a pretty extensive beer selection too... Bonus! read more

I'm not a beer enthusiast but Mr. H is and so we ended up coming here. There was a wait, so we ended up standing in a gallery between the main door and the bar door. While waiting here I noticed a very bad smell, Mr. H said it was probably because of the start temperature difference but to me it just smelt like dirty carpet/ sweat. It was pretty gross but thankfully we moved inside and waited there. I tried their cocktails and they were ok, nothing great and i wasn't excepting it either. Mr. H throughly enjoyed the beer selection and we ended up staying for dinner. I had the mussels and Mr. H had the falafel sandwich both of which were nice. I'll probably come again if I'm bringing more beer enthusiast. PS: The service was very good and we stayed there for a very long time and never felt rushed. :) read more
