Love Bar Pendry! Exactly what you want from a hotel bar. Small, lively, great service and generous drinks.

Maybe it's just me, but I struggled to shake off the idea that this is a hotel lobby bar. Sure, you don't have to be a hotel guest, and it works fine as a bar and lounge. I suspect it has to do with the crowd - less of the general public looking for a good time, and mostly hotel guests. Though, if you're looking for something quieter, it may just fit the bill. But I digress. I started the experience with a Crimson and Carbide. A little spicy, a little smoky, a light sweetness, and big-time creativity (and color) with the use of beet juice. That said, I don't feel this drink was worth the $20 it cost. Location and venue, I suppose? For food, I ordered the Tuna Tartare. Usually, I'm all for new and interesting interpretations, but this crosses the line into Tuna Tartare tacos. The result was something significantly more carb-heavy than I would have liked. Further, other than the fish being lightly marinated (which is pretty standard), there was nothing remotely interesting or unique about the app. Much like the cocktail, this was priced on the high end, coming out at $28. It isn't all doom and gloom! I will gladly say they have a solid whiskey list, and I was able to try the 12 year old Dalmore. Price wasn't low, but knowing how much a bottle costs, I think $18 is in line with what I would expect from a bar, generally. I also want to give a shoutout to their service staff, who were attentive and fast (though, food took a bit longer than I would have hoped). Final verdict: If you're seeking a quieter spot to spend some time with a small company (even if that's a company of one), and you have money to burn, Bar Pendry isn't a half-bad option. However, if you're going out to be social and/or aren't looking to put a massive hole in your wallet for not very much return, there may be better options out there. read more

Last week on a recent visit to Chicago, I stayed at the Chicago Pendry. I arrived to the hotel in the latter part of a weekday evening, and after checking in and getting settled, I decided to go downstairs to the Bar Pendry for a bite to eat. I would later return to the Bar Pendry during the weekend for a cocktail. Both experiences were positive. I enjoyed the food, drinks, service, and ambiance at the bar. When I first arrived to grab a bite, I sat right next to the bar to watch one of the March Madness basketball games that were showing on the one television near me. The food menu options include share plates, large plates, and dessert options. I chose a Wagyu Burger consisting of 8 oz of wagyu beef, bacon onion jam, cheddar, lettuce, tomatoes, and a brioche bun and served with French fries. It was tasty and filling, and they brought out small single serve condiment jars for the burger and fries. As they only brought me Dijon mustard, I asked if they had yellow mustard, and they made me my own dish of yellow mustard (which was unexpected but appreciated). A few days later, my friend and I stopped by again on a weekend afternoon for cocktails. The cocktail menu included classic, contemporary, and non-alcoholic drinks. I requested a vodka based drink that was fruity and sweet, and they brought out a French Martini, which typically is made with vodka, pineapple juice, and Chambord (a French black raspberry liqueur), and garnished with a piece of fruit. We both got the French Martinis, and it was exactly as I had requested it. We also had a small dish of complimentary nuts and olives to go with our drinks. The Bar Pendry felt both classic and modern at the same time. The furniture felt intentional, and I saw individuals, small groups, and large groups alike at the bar over the two times I visited. The Bar Pendry menus include a food menu, cocktails, beer, wine, and spirits, and late night dining. During my recent stay at the Chicago Pendry, I went to Bar Pendry twice, once for food on a weekday evening and once for cocktails on a weekend afternoon. They also have a Social Hour on Sunday through Wednesday from 4-6 PM (through May 31) offering draft beer for $5, house wine for $6, and food options between $7 and $20. They also host special events including the Spirit of Chicago from Sunday through Wednesday from 4-5 PM (through May 31) where for $35 per person (inclusive of tax & gratuity), you can get a spirit tasting flight (three 1.5 oz pours) and 3 bite pairings. There is also a Mother's Day Boozy Tea on May 10 from 11 AM to 3 PM. This afternoon tea with a twist features tea-based cocktails, small bites, live entertainment and a little something special for mom for $100 per person. The Tea Tower includes four savory bites and four sweet bites, and the Boozy teas include three options. Another little gem that made staying at The Pendry was The Pendry Bar. We checked into The Pendry but our room had not been certified as being ready for our arrival. The reception area had free lemonade to partake of, with a secret password to take to the bar to get a shot in it. So me and The Doctor mosied on over to get our free shot of booze. The bar, while small, is quite darling. Seating was swank and chill. Of course they had prosecco so I was in. I did look over the menu and saw they had a pretty decent selection of scotch and whiskeys as well as Moët & Chandon Brut Imperial, Veuve Clicquot "Yellow Label" and Ruinart Rosé. I looked over the cocktails as The Queen was going to be joining us for drinks. There were definitely some items that I knew she would love. Once she joined us, she got the Oak Street Peach (Hennessey, Giffard Peach, Espelette Pepper Syrup, Ghost Pepper Tincture, Lime Juice) and the Passionate A-Pear (Clasé Azul Reposado, Spiced Pear, Agave, Lime juice, Chandon Brut Rose). She said both were delish and put The Pendry Bar on her list as a place to just go and have a drink before a concert or dinner. We got a couple of things to snack on as we were having dinner later, so we went with the Charcuterie Board, Crispy Calamari (with Gochujang Aioli, Lime, Coriander) and the Caviar & Sticks (Fried Burrata Cheese, American Caviar, Lemon Zest). Those sticks were very good and I wanted to get more, but we were having dinner later. Serve was very nice and attentive, in the bar and the hotel side. Although our room was ready, we were still drinking and eating and they took our bags up for us while we finished. In search of an espresso martini at night and this place was across from our hotel. Busy when we walked in but managed to snag seats at the bar as someone was leaving. Popped in here to warm up after a bitingly windy walk around the river. I appreciate this bar is open earlier in the day than others for those of us on vacation letting loose during the day. The bar is a small space tucked into the corner of the hotel lobby with a variety of seating options from leather couches to plush armchairs to bar stools. A vibe-y place to be in. We ordered hot toddies to warm up, which were disappointingly bland and watery. Did I just pay $20 for tea? Some of the signature cocktails on the menu looked intriguing so I should have ordered one of those. The server also gave us a small bowl of complimentary popcorn which was actually delicious - a perfect blend of butter and salt. If swag was a small lobby bar it would be Bar Pendry. We randomly walked in here because we were looking for a hotel bar situation not far from where our cruise ship departed. London House rooftop was packed and truly not the vibe since we wanted to sit and relax. Bar Pendry was perfect and I was delightfully surprised that they had non alcoholic mocktail menu situation. The froth and coffee taste on my drink was amazing. My friend also enjoyed her alcoholic drink as well but I was a bad yelper and didn't get the name. I know it had blueberry for garnish and was light pink. So if you are over 40 and tired of walking in Chicago near Michigan Ave and the river, do stop by. This is your mad swaggy respite. read more

After a thoroughly failed attempt at a nearby landmark establishment, I'm happy to report Bar Pendry was above and beyond a much more fulfilling experience. Food: keeping it light and easy, the fries were very well executed, the tuna tartare was fresh with veggies crisp, and the wontons providing a beautifully rounded sensory experience. Great. Service: we left that other place after waiting 53 minutes and still being charged for service. Bar Pendry did NOT automatically charge. Because they deliver exceptional service. Clocked in at 3m45s from dropping menus to taking our order. Drinks and food were down in under 20 minutes. Which is why I gladly tipped 30%. Ambiance: my only regret is having places to go and people to see. I could have EASILY hung out here and invited whomever to join us here. The music gave energy, an eclectic playlist across genres as the Sunday high tea was wrapping up and we immediately felt much more comfortable and welcomed in this space. Bar Pendry does exactly what a hospitality establishment needs to do. No fuss, no muss. Will be coming back after my dinner plans and will recruit more people to share this experience. read more

Love this bar and the architecture of the building is beautiful! (Dark green with gold accents - I looks like a champagne bottle!) There is absolutely nothing special about this place other than being in Chicago's iconic Carbide and Carbon building. Our server was not friendly at all. Ambience was quite underwhelming. The place is cozy only if you get sofas. The bar stools are a bit uncomfortable. My drink was decent but quite pricey, for $20. Great lobby bar, with a cool vibe. I absolutely love the high tea here! The food is great and presented beautifully. The service was good and makes it worth a visit here when you are in Chicago. We were a group of 7 and sat at a a settee in the middle of the establishment. *Downside, table was not large enough to accommodate us so some of us used our laps. I was invited to an event at Bar Pendry and honestly I did not know what to expect. I was pleasantly suprised at the elegance. The hotel itself has changed hands multiple times (Hard Rock Hotel, St. James, Pendry Hotel). But Hey, why not check it out? First round of drinks were on the House. Yay!! You enter the hotel's main lobby and step behind these dark Velvet curtains to find an intimate dimly lit lounge area, several pods of sofa seating and a two-sided fireplace to break up the room. The vibe was upscale and mysterious! The bar service was attentive and professional, even putting linen napkins underneath each drink served and wiping each wine glass before pouring just to ensure smudges or lint was nowhere on the glass. I appreciate these little things that elevate the experience in a big way. (I see you bartender Michael) Because the space was rented for this event, they had a small buffett table set up with charcuterie. How could I resist? I do wish it was marked since not all of it was obvious what it was, specifically this lump of what I think was liver. I helped myself to some cured meats, cheese blocks, dried fruit & ghirkins. Anyways, even the music fit the feel of the room, and I think as the cooler months approach Chicago, this could be a cozy yet swanky place to go after work for a wine-down. read more

High price for your drinks at the bar? Yes. It's a hotel bar and it's in Chicago. However, the drinks were excellent and of sizable proportion. The beer is a more reasonable price if you don't want to venture into the mixed drinks. The service was excellent between the bartender and her waiter coworker. Hello, fabulous! What an amazing bar. So we went on a Sunday around noon to avoid the brisk Chicago winter. They were hosting their "team time". For $65/person you get tea and then a tower of sweet and savory tea time snacks. You can make your tea boozy for an additional cost. They had a DJ playing live music. Looked fun but crowded so we went to the bar. Erica was our bartender. She was fabulous. We asked her to surprise us on cocktails and she did not disappoint. They serve some small pop corn snack at the bar. We hung out there for a good few hours and drinks kept flowing and good company with the staff. I'd definitely recommend coming here for cocktails. If tea time is your thing, make reservations. They also have a full kitchen but we did not try anything or even explore the menu. read more

We visited for the boozy holiday tea and were blown away! $45 included bottomless tea, as well as 4 savory tea-sized bites and 3 tea-sized desserts. The tea was great, and our pot was kept full. For the savory, we started with an egg tart with caviar that was delicious! It was my friends favorite bite of the meal. We moved onto the orange brioche sandwich which was absolutely delicious and such an inventive combination of flavors. The chicken salad was also DELICIOUS and the hickory was so unique. The smoked salmon bite was probably our least favorite as it was very fishy but was still good. For dessert, we started with the mulled wine macaroon which was delicious (and I usually don't like macaroons!). We then had the chocolate hazelnut pudding which was amazingly chocolately and decadent. Finally, we had the carrot cake which was probably our least favorite dessert. It was a bit too rich for us. There was also a chai tea scone which started the meal and was absolutely delicious. To drink, we had the convivial punch. I was skeptical because I'm not the biggest bourbon fan. But I loved it! Especially once the flavored ice cube began to melt, it became perfectly sweet and flavorful. My friend who also is not the biggest fan of bourbon felt it was too strong for her, however. My wife and I had reservations for afternoon tea. Our Uber driver took us to the wrong place and by the time we arrived their tea service was over. However, they bent over backwards for us. The manager offered to set up an experience for us. The chef created a tea service just for us and the staff was as friendly and helpful as anyone could ask. To begin, our experience doing tea service here was absolutely 10/10. The little lounge area is gorgeous and the service was incredible. We got a bottle of Prosecco & the finger food that comes with the tea service. I never had to fill up my tea or glass because our server was so attentive. This review is for the tea service. While the lobby area and bar are cute and cozy, overall the tea experience was not great. I much prefer other tea in Chicago. The service was very dismissive and uninterested (waiter took our tea order in passing - mid stride from bussing another table, and also did not explain what any of the sandwiches and pastries were when they arrived. Just dropped them off) The seating is super weird too - one of our party had to sit on an uncomfortable chair that was way higher than the rest of us.
