For some reasons, I assumed this would be rooftop at the top of the building, but it's actually lobby level (5th floor maybe?). This is the main bar for the hotel and has some outdoor seating, though we were seated inside since it was raining. You can walk in or for a bigger group like we did, make reservations on OpenTable. Drinks: - La Familia es Todo: expensive at $29, but I guess it was that Jose Cuervo Reserva de la Familia extra-añejo tequila! It was well balanced, and I ended up getting another of the same Food: - Truffle fries: skinny fried, well seasoned, good for sharing - Burrata: with beets and buttered country loaf - Brussels sprouts: good flavor and texture - Bourbon Brownie: served warm; it comes with whipped cream, but I wish it were ice cream - Spiced tiramisu: a spin on the traditional version, though I think I prefer the original - Brown butter chocolate chip cookies: served warm, a large portion - definitely the winner of the desserts It was nice to have food to snack on with our drinks. Got the blushing beauty cocktail, truffle fries. wanted to go to a rooftop bar while it was still nice outside and ended up here. It was a really nice spot for drinks and a snack. The drink had vodka, triple sec, cranberry, lime and allspice dum and it was pretty good! The fries were also good with the flavor of truffle oil and Parmesan. Ngl idk why the fries took forever to come out; I think I waited like 30-45mins for them which I wasn't expecting. The server I had was really nice though and checked in on me. The views are great, but my last time here, we waited 30 min for just the appetizers. -- hummus and melon with prosciutto. Nothing that's even cooked. It took forever to take our orders for our entrees. Drinks came out faster at least. Thank you bartender. I've been here a few times when I have guests in town and they want dinner with a view. Everything was wonderful on our visit. I had friends visiting from Charleston so we decided to embrace the weather and have a cocktail al fresco. The outdoor area is adorable. We had sofa seating next to a fire table. The manager, concierge and server were all wonderful. They were so kind and professional. We were provided blankets and hot beverages. Upstairs at the Gwen hosted a Tipsy Tea Party bridal shower for my niece that I was throwing with her other aunts. Cecil and his team did such a great job! It was so easy, the atmosphere was perfect, and the food and drink were outstanding. We had our own room, which was perfectly contained and wonderfully appointed. We added on a Bellini Bar to the standard tea service, which was wonderful and a great hit. I stink at pictures, but have included a few from before we got going - I hope you can see how wonderful it was (though I regret I didn't get a picture of the towers of food, with all the pastries and sandwiches/little bites). This review is for their rooftop curling - my friend had made a reservation for a particularly chilly evening so we pretty much had the outside area to ourselves. They had firepits, heat lamps, and offered blankets, which was nice. I just wish they had done a better job of clearing the snow and salting because it was very slippery! Also, the curling area was not actually ice and the stones were on wheels?? so it was a little haphazard playing but still fun. To help keep warm, I ordered their campfire hot chocolate ($19) that was quite good - the mezcal gave it a unique smoky flavor. One of my friends ordered the bread plate to share but unfortunately it was a miss. Our waitress was really great though and even brought out complimentary cookies at one point. I always have low expectations for hotel bars but we had a decent experience at The Gwen. read more

A friend and I came to Upstairs at the Gwen to sample their restaurant week offering, a prix fixe menu offering three courses for $45. A rainy night in the middle of Winter meant the terrace was not an option. Instead, we dined in the airy interior lobby of the Gwen hotel. The decor was pleasant, although it lacked some character -- sterile in the ways that hotels tend to be. The dining area was somewhat small, but the seating options were all quite comfortable, though with some visible signs of use. Our server was very sweet and attentive, although a touch on the quiet side. Our drinks both left something to be desired. My Negroni in particular was bitter without reprieve from any more subtle flavors. The food was a pleasant surprise. The thick cut candied bacon was rich without being overpowering, and the frisée bed it sat upon was well-dressed. The branzino too, something of a fussy thing to cook, was done to perfection as was the creamed spinach it came atop. The chocolate tart at the end rounded the meal off nicely, although by itself it wasn't particularly remarkable; it is of course difficult to say anything bad about chocolate and caramel. Overall, it was a very pleasant restaurant week experience. I think it's important to note that the value in Upstairs at the Gwen really seemed to lie in the shockingly good deal that their restaurant week menu offered. Outside of restaurant week, Upstairs at the Gwen is probably best enjoyed during a Summer happy hour on the terrace. read more

Going back to my drafts I realized I never posted this amazing food I had on the rooftop of The Gwen in Chicago. It is quintessentially what I would imagine rooftop happy hours should be when you're living in the city. The kind of stuff I fantasize about what life would be like living there. Beautiful views, great food, a DJ playing some great background music, fire pits, TVs, comfy seating, it had it all. It was such a perfect backdrop in place to unwind watching the sunset after a long road trip into the city. If the wind picks up or weather isn't cooperating, they had a beautiful indoor space as well. This pasta was perfectly cooked, the shrimp dish was such a generous portion, and the cocktails were deliciously balanced. If there weren't so many amazing spots to check out in Chicago, I would love to go back. If you're lucky enough to live in Chicago, you might want to put this on your regular rotation. read more

I would recommend if you're looking for a lounge and chill vibe. This rooftop doesn't have too much of a view as it's tucked in between buildings. Went on a Monday, our server was great. Immediately greeted us upon arrival and very knowledgeable of the menu. He recommended a drink which one of the gals in the party absolutely loved. Went there for drinks and dessert on a beautiful Saturday evening. We were seated outside on the patio for a great view of the city and buildings. All three of our drinks were really creative (mine had cheese syrup in it!) and we had the cookies which were so yummy. We got seated outside in the terrace and it was amazing! Perfect for a date night or a girls night out. Really enjoyed the food options here and the drinks as well. They have a wide variety of drink options that it was so hard to just pick one. My friends and I got an express martini which was great but just missing the coffee beans which was no big deal. They also had a women's month menu as well for drinks. The waitress was so nice and gave us some great recommendations as well. We all got the flatbread which was crispy and so Godspeed. Vibe is still great, services is . . . not. Came with a friend the other day for drinks and light bites. She had already ordered a drink when I got there, and I will say as soon as I sat down the server was there to take my order. And he did return not too long after we finished our first round. However, from there, service was nonexistent. At one point, another server walked by and said he was taking over for the other server, so we gave him our drink orders. Right after that, our original server came by to take our drink orders . . . huh? Then yet another server came by at one point. We sat around for at least 20 minutes with empty glasses, trying to get someone to bring us our check. We flagged down a serve to get it, and she flagged down server #2 to get it. We still waited about 10 minutes. Drinks were good (still high priced), and my friend really enjoyed the papas bravas (I had come from dinner so was too full to eat!). I can only speak to weekend brunch, but here are some things about it worth sharing. 1) The rooftop view is incredible, and the tables/stools are very nice. Overall just a classy yet fun vibe. 2) Server Mandy was a delight. She brought my husband some lemon slices when he wasn't feeling great, and gave us menu recommendations that we immediately trusted. 3) 10:30am on a beautiful Sunday morning = tons of space, yet it wasn't empty. This is a rooftop deck, but on the fifth floor. So you are only seeing the sides of other buildings as you eat. The food is okay, but overpriced. The Breakfast burger was mostly char...honestly I almost sent it back but had limited time with my friends. Maybe this is a fun place for drinks but don't come for the food. read more

Mother's Day Tea Missed the Mark We brought our mom here for Mother's Day tea and were really disappointed, especially given the high price- even more than what we paid at the Ritz a couple years ago. The event was in a windowless, undecorated room, with a DJ playing loud music that made it hard to talk. The drinks were "bottomless," but we sat with empty glasses for 20+ minutes because the bar was "backed up"- even though the room wasn't full. The tea kettle had just one tea bag floating inside, tag and all. The food looked nothing like the photos- no scones or sandwiches, just deep-fried snacks and grocery store pastries thrown on a tiered tray. No napkins, no linens - nothing special. Our server was sweet and did the best he could with what he had. Not his fault. But overall, this felt more like a cash grab than a luxury experience. Definitely not what you'd expect from a hotel like The Gwen. read more

I thought it was okay. stopped by for drinks and apps- had an Irish coffee and a gin spritz from their weekend special St. Patrick's day menu. The Irish coffee had way too much syrup or whatever they used to flavor it. To eat, we had the ribs and poutine. The ribs were super flavorful and saucy. The poutine wasn't the best- cheese wasn't melted enough and the corned beef was a bit tough. Our server was extremely attentive which is always appreciative. Overall, it was a nice atmosphere, and had a really beautiful patio that is probably super nice in the summer, but not sure I would be jumping to come back for the food. read more

Second time visiting upstairs, first time on the balcony. The views alone make this a great spot for pre-dinner drinks, dinner, or an evening nightcap. Missed out on food because of a storm. We had to ask another server to move us inside, because the heat was too much. This was after being told that there were no other spots under the shade, and seeing a whole party sat under shade. We order our shared appetizer called, breads and spreads. White bean and garlic confit was fine. Tastes good but not spectacular, the smoky flavor was overwhelming. No other spread was noteworthy. Another 15 passes and I look back to find our host as he is taking a large group outside. Probably had reservations but we peek through the windows and see ample seating. Wasn't going to wait any longer especially when the food didn't seem worth it. Weird behavior and imagine my surprise as we were leaving, I spot a Michelin star plaque on the wall. Yikes!! Gorgeous swanky spot for unexpectedly good food and cocktails! Located about 10 (?) floors up, at the lobby level of the Gwen hotel. I've never had a problem getting a spot without a reservation. It's enough of a well kept secret that even on a Saturday night we were seated right away with no trouble. Lovey ambience and decor. I think people maybe don't try this place because they think it'll be a standard hotel bar -- but it's one of my favorite spots for some bites and cocktails if I'm around Miracle Mile! This time around I tried their spanakopita and it was DELICIOUS. I'm still thinking about it days later. That pillow-y soft feta and honey combo is like a dream. Olives/almonds appetizer was tasty as well. My partner always gets their burger when we come here; devoured before I got a photo. As always, fun cocktails and an extensive booze list! We made reservations on a Sunday, and were able to be seated right away; it didn't seem very busy at all which was surprising. Our wait staff was kind, attentive, and helpful with guiding us through the menu options. We ended up ordering bottles of rose for the table, so I can't comment on the cocktails. The only thing I was disappointed by was the food. They have a lot of promising options on the menu. I was able to try chorizo skillet and the pork belly fried rice. The effort was there, but unfortunately the flavor was lacking. The chorizo skillet ended up getting doused in hot sauce. For a dish topped with a mound of "chili crisp", the pork belly fried rice was also disappointingly bland. I did get a side croissant and that was my favorite part. read more

This was the last stop of my anniversary celebrations with my boyfriend! We were staying at the hotel (which was awesome by the way - that's in a separate review!) and wanted to end our night at their rooftop bar/restaurant. We originally had reservations for outside, but it was just too dang cold (thank you Chicago weather!) so we asked if we could sit inside instead. It was an easy fix and we were sat at a half booth type table in the corner. This terrace itself is so luxe, dimly lit, and definitely has an intimate/posh vibe and look to it. Our server was nice, although she didn't come around often. The cocktails were okay, too. I got the Spring Margarita, which wasn't necessarily bad, it just wasn't what I was expecting and wasn't too smooth going down. My boyfriend got a simple vodka soda lime and it didn't taste like any alcohol was in it. We also ordered green tea shots and they were huge, which was great ;) Overall I'd definitely return to check out the food and the outside once it's warmer out.
