This weekend we had the pleasure to try Bar Weems on Reynolds Ave in North Charleston. They don't take reservations, so it was first come first served. They did have ample parking which was nice. We could tell right off the bat that this place was something extra as it was completely packed and stayed that way. There is no take out or delivery because the owner wants you to taste his food fresh out of the kitchen. Since the word Bar is in the name we had to of course indulge in a few cocktails. My wife tried the Endserenading with wasabi infused tequila, guava, lime with a freeze-dried lime and guava pearls. Not only did it taste light and fruity, but it also looked inviting, I tried the Winners Never Quit jasmine tea infused bourbon and yuzu sake which was also flavorful and playfully decorated with a leaf cloths pinned to the rim. We decided to try the koji focaccia with whipped miso butter. All I can say is wow! Light, warm and so pillowy fluffy. We said we were not going to fill up on bread, but it was too good to not finish! They offer three kinds of Karaage, so we tried all three. The Classic had a nice spice profile and was a generous portion. The Kewpie Japanese mayo added extra depth. The Evil truly lived up to its name as when you start to eat it you feel nothing and then you get hit with a freight train of back heat! Super spicy but still tasty, nonetheless. Be sure to have a cold beverage on hand. Our favorite though was the Snow cheese with a special cheese power. It was a delight with the cheese slightly melting into the crispy skin for a satisfying bite. His go to Ramen is the shoyu ramen with light chicken broth, dashi, green onion, chashu, bamboo shoots, and an egg, The broth is steeped a full 24 hours, and you can tell when you taste it. All the ingredients are cooked to perfection with the egg yolk being nice and gooey, but the broth will have you coming back again and again. I could not put it down. We walked in on a Thursday night and snagged some bar seats. Really enjoyed the decor and vibe of the space. Bar seats were comfy and the layout was nice. We started with a couple cocktails and handful of appetizers to share. Hunter was wonderful and took great care of us. Koji foccacia was excellent, but just a bit TOO salty. Texture and flavors were spot on, but the batch we got in some bites had just too much salt. The pickled Woodear mushrooms were so tasty, we got some rice and seaweed to wrap it up and altogether was delicious! Curry potatoes very flavorful and on point. Of course we couldn't decide so we tried all 3 karaage - classic, evil (BEWARE it's ) and snow cheese. All very different but very good. That evil one lingers in your mouth for a bit! My friend got the shoyu ramen that they're known for and I got the miso because I enjoy a creamier broth. Both had distinctive flavors but tasty overall. Hunter convinced us to try the red bean crème brûlée that he concocted himself so we had to! Ooooweee that thing was delicious! Who knew red bean would go so well with it, the flavors and textures complimented one another. We had a really nice time here and will definitely come back! read more

Finally went to Weems after years of hearing about their pop ups and being thrilled to hear of their brick and mortar location and it was incredible! As a long time Ikura lover the Ikura rice was my favorite dish! The shoyu ramen was also excellent! I got the shoyu lite which is the same thing as the regular shoyu ramen with a bit less pork! I liked that they offered this option because Im more of a noodle and broth kinda person so having a little less meat at a more affordable price point was something unusual that I really liked to see! Inside decor was beautiful and servers were very friendly! I believe our server said her name was Sharon. Bad with names though so Im not sure. Only downside was that i believe their AC was down when we went... so it was pretty toasty inside. Even if the AC was never fixed I would 100% go back again and again for that Ikura rice!! read more

12/10 recommend the veggie ramen!! The miso broth is so flavorful, the noodles have perfect texture, and the bowl is full with pieces of charred cabbage that are delicious! Very filling and you can add as much spice as you'd like tableside. Can't wait to come back and order that again! We walked in on a Saturday night and were lucky to get a table with no wait. Several staff checked on us throughout the meal. Love the open kitchen and cozy atmosphere which is perfect while sippin ramen. read more

This is a cute little bar that's open at mainly at night. It is a little surprising they aren't open early during the day because the food is quite good although the portions are smaller than expected. I'm not really sure what the night life scene is like for this bar because it was definitely more like a restaurant than a late night bar but maybe that's what they are aiming for. Although, this kind of style seems more suitable for downtown charleston. The service was great, the servers were sweet although there weren't a lot of patrons when I came in but by the time I left there were a bit more. The food was better than I had thought it would be. The rice and pork was flavorful, the karaage was crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. The ramen itself was pretty much on par with all the other american ramen restaurants. It seems that in America ramen restaurants are just saltier compared to the ramen I tried in japan which is more balanced in my experience but I assume that is just what Americans prefer at this point. All in all the food was great if you enjoy ramen restaurants in America. The only problem was that the serving amount is a little less than other American restaurants. It is the perfect amount for me since it allows me to try more dishes but I believe other people would probably have to order twice as much to become full. All in all this is a great casual spot to drink and eat small dishes. The neighborhood is a little scary for some people at the moment but it's also being gentrified slowly as can be seen by this restaurant existing. read more

Weems is back -- and somehow even better!! We used to visit Weems' pop-ups at Bar 616, always excited to see what creative dish he'd come up with next. So of course we had to check out his new restaurant... and honestly, it exceeded every expectation. The space itself is gorgeous as it's stylish, warm, and super inviting. The bar alone is worth a visit, with plenty of seating and a lineup of unique, thoughtful cocktails. Our waitress happened to be in a relationship with Weems, and when we asked about the changes in process and menu, she lit up. Hearing her talk about the intention, passion, and care that goes into everything they make just added another layer to the experience. It's genuinely inspiring to see people chase their passions and create something this special. Now for the food! Snow Cheese Karaage - I know it sounds weird a chicken tender covered in cheese dust but trust me, it was insanely good. Tamago - A traditional cold egg dish. I'd seen mixed reviews, but everyone at our table liked it. Slightly salty, super fluffy, and honestly pretty delicious. Pork Rice + Korokke - The korokke might have been my favorite of the night. Creamy, comforting, and bursting with flavor. And then the star of the show... the ramen. I got the veggie miso, and it was incredible. The noodles have clearly been refined since the pop-up days, and the broth was packed with flavor, the kind that warms you from the inside out. Overall, highly recommend whether you're going for a date, bringing friends, or just treating yourself to a solo bowl of seriously good ramen. Bar Weems takes taste seriously. I had the marinated mushrooms, spicy karage, and the shoyu ramen. Each was a genuine 10/10. Mocktails were incredible too. Easily the best ramen in the Charleston area. On top of all of this, their kitchen is open until 1230 (which is unheard of here) AND they support local artists. 10 out of ten! I absolutely loved everything I had here. The snow cheese karaage is so crispy and delicious, and the ramen itself is the main event. My surprise favorite that I will definitely be returning for are the Wood Ear mushrooms!!! The servers are very attentive and will let you ask all sorts of questions. My friend tried one of their mocktails, and it was so unique. It is nicely decorated with wood paneling, and each wall showcases local artists or features something each of the owners hand-picked. The upcoming sticker wall is from Chef Weems, I was informed. If you are looking for the best Ramen in Charleston, definitely head out to Weems! My friends and I came here tonight to check out the new spot. We started off our meal with a couple of delicious cocktails + apps. The mushrooms were really good, but once you got further into the bowl, they were drenched in soy sauce. Otherwise, I really liked it. On the other hand, I would not order the tamago again, it had almost a fishy flavor to it. The restaurant itself had a very cool vibe to it, with dim lighting and good music. But, the service was very slow...we ended up waiting an hour and a half for our ramen! I thought the ramen was okay, but I found it to be a bit oily for my liking. However, the pork really stole the show, it had a lot of flavor to it and fell apart in your mouth. read more

My new fav restaurant and few places impress me enough to leave a review these days. We started with the wood ear mushrooms and the snowcheese karaage fried chicken. Both tantalizingly delicious! I then got the ramen with veggies. So so so good. To top it all off, they had a delightful specialty mocktail which contained thai tea, guava, lime, and yogurt -- all clarified. Our first time at BAR WEEMS, I was impressed with the cleanliness and the cool vibe. I will say that the music was too loud for conversation but when we asked to turn it down a bit that was done. Hunter was our server and he was excellent. He was interested in us, but did not really hang around. The food was delicious. The Shoya Ramen was perfect and the egg was cooked so perfectly. We had a whole bunch of sides like the fried chicken with the powder on it, the pickled wood, your mushrooms, the taters and a couple of other things. Everything was cooked to perfection. The only negative thing that I have to say is that I wish everything wasn't just sides, but like the spicy chicken on the bread could've been served as a meal, and there were no salads. This is by far the best Ramen place in Charleston. The food comes out quickly, the service is fantastic and super friendly. We ordered their Miso Ramen and the Chashu pork in it is so tender and has such a fantastic flavor. We also found out they make the noodles at the restaurant. I ordered the Pork Rice as an appetizer and the char on the pork and the fresh ingredients were so delicious. Tonight was my first time ever coming to Bar Weems. I was absolutely smitten by the atmosphere inside, for a Wednesday 30 minutes after opening it was already somewhat busy. As I sat at the end of the bar and listened to people talk around me/bartender/servers it was clear the place was packed with regulars. It truly was apparent that everyone who worked there knew the regulars and made sure to stop and say hello to them! I loved that so much personally. Ambiance inside was quite intimate and comfortable to me (also bathrooms were clean and well decorated) and I liked the music they had playing. Let's get into the food and drinks now that I've laid out the inside and service. The bartender whose name I found out at the end was Jonathan, helped me pick out my first drink which was wonderful. Even though I'm not a gin girlie personally, he reassured me that the flavors worked well together and with his assurance I had the London Calling. He also informed me he had a hand in creating all the featured drinks on the menu, and I could tell he had a passion for his craft. The flavors were not overpowering which I usually expect with something that has lavender and gin in, and genuinely I would get it again to my personal surprise. While I sipped my bevvy, one of the kind women came up to me to ask if I had questions about the menu. I like asking for my servers opinions on food so when I told her I was between the miso or shoyu ramen, and she told me she loved both but there was something about the Shoyu ramen she personally loved more, I ordered the Shoyu ramen. I also asked about which karaage she'd recommend as I wanted to order all three and she picked the Evil flavor for me (I'm grateful she did). In no way was I disappointed tonight. Have I ever been to Japan and had ramen there? No! Am I picky sh*thead who likes good food? Yes! I saw complaints about the ramen portion size and they're idiots. This had the perfect amount of broth to noodles, the noodles had the perfect bite and chew to them, and the broth was refreshingly delicious. One thing I DO know about ramen are soft boiled eggs. I make them myself in a mayak marinade, and the egg I received in the shoyu ramen was perfectly cooked (I hate overcooked soft boiled eggs in ramen) and I could tell they were marinated for sure. The pork was flavorful and not chewy, melt in your mouth good. I asked to add cabbage to mine, which they did, but I did not think it was worth the $2.50 charge as cabbage is relatively cheap, although the cabbage was a delicious addition and they did have a nice char to them. I'll be just as happy next time without it. As I worked on my ramen and first drink, when Jonathan came back over I put my life's trust into him and let him know he could pick my next drink from the menu when I finished my first, and I received the You'd Prefer An Astronaut while I chowed down. I took my first sip and DANG it was good! I loved my first drink, but YPAA knocked me off my feet and had me dreaming of summertime in CHS. It was so refreshing and not overpoweringly tasting of melon, I'm home and still thinking about it if we're being honest. It paired nicely with the Evil Karaage, cutting through the lip tingling spice of Szechuan pepper quite well in my opinion! My stomach might hate me later but I ate all four pieces, even dipping it in the delicious ramen broth. Did I mention it was served with soft milk bread that I also devoured????? Ahhhhh. I'm so content right now. Last but not least I had one of Sharon's rotating $5 shot. It was a bourbon espresso infused lavender whatever you want to call it shot, and obviously I needed to try it. I loved it. I'm not sure how to explain this but all the drinks here don't have that obnoxious "I was poured straight from a plastic container bought at the store" taste to them. I tried many drink combos tonight that I've not liked before but enjoyed here. I know this was a long review but if you're still here please trust me when I say this place is a hidden gem. I'm excited to go back to try new drinks and different menu items the next time I take myself out on a solo date, and I hope you enjoy it too. read more

Was very excited to try this place, arrived when it opened at 5. Unfortunately it was disappointing in multiple ways. The apps came fast but the ramen took two hours to come out. We had the wood ear mushrooms, dashi maki tamago omelet, and miso ramen. The mushrooms were excellent and something you don't find often, the omelet was not particularly good, no one at our table who ordered it finished it, and the ramen broth lacked flavor, the chashu pork shoulder was excellent though.
