If you're in the area looking for good quality Japanese food then consider giving Kanpai a visit. I had three different rolls, two tuna based and a spider roll. The fish is quite fresh and the tuna tasted wonderful. The restaurant is cozy and intimate, which makes it the perfect place for a romantic dinner or a small gathering with friends. Another plus is that the restaurant is locally owned and operated, it's always nice to support local. Overall, if you're a fan of Japanese cuisine, you should definitely check out Kanpai. The delicious sushi, friendly owners, and relaxing atmosphere make it the perfect destination for your next night out.

If you enjoy sake kama this is your new favorite place to eat. I am a huge fan of them and try them wherever they are available. They make them perfectly here. The appetizer size comes with 2 and the meal comes with 3. The meal is only $17. This is insane. I have been back 3x in two weeks and I don't even eat out that much anymore. I love the bento boxes here. I wouldn't say the sushi blows my mind, but its fairly priced and decent.

Recently, we placed a takeout order with Kanpai. My husband and I always heard it was some of Charleston's best sushi, although I was unsure how it would be to-go. We love sushi but aren't comfortable dining in restaurants with the high COVID-19 numbers. We ordered a sushi (nigiri) sampler for two, pork bun, and seafood scallion pancake over the phone and paid via Venmo. I wish we could've ordered and paid online, but Kanpai is low-key and not a traditional to-go spot. Having to call is a very a minor inconvenience if we get to keep a high-quality restaurant around through these tough times. We called when we arrived and parked out front. Our order was ready on time, and the masked employee put it in our backseat without us having to leave the car. Thankfully, we didn't have to touch a shared credit card reader, doorknob, or pen- and the restaurant's adapting to our weird "new normal". The sampler is chef's choice, so prepare for a foodie adventure. My favorite nigiri were the eel and the salmon rolls, and the seafood pancake was good too. It was my first time having eel and I liked it, the rice tasted creamy, and the seafood was high quality. I didn't try the steamed bun-my husband basically inhaled it, so it must've been good. The seafood pancake leftovers reheated surprisingly well in the air fryer the next day. Kanpai's safety procedures were on point, and I wouldn't hesitate to order again for a socially-distanced sushi night.

For an Asian restaurant in a city that doesn't have a huge Asian population, this place is a good solid choice. I especially love the fact that it is not a chain restaurant and is a family owned restaurant. In this day and age, we should go try and visit the local restaurants in our communities. Not only are they an integral part of the community, they are hidden gems as well. So #SupportLocalBusinesses! In regards to the food, solid stuff! I got the Dolsot Bibimbap and it had a good ratio or rice to vegetables to meat. The thin sliced beef was nice and tender and very well seasoned and the vegetables provided the right amount of balance to the protein. Top it off with a sunny side up egg, and it was delicious, especially as the yolk ran all over and mixed into the rice. Keep up the good work!

Food was absolutely amazing. We ordered a wide variety and everything came out fresh and tasty we will definitely be coming back.

You are served on paper plates and the bill was $180 for 4 people who brought our own wine.

Four of us went to Kanpai last night, we brought our own wine because they do not serve any alcohol whatsoever. We were charged $7 for EACH person for the corkage fee and the server did not even offer to open our bottle. So $28 to open our own bottle....RIP OFF!! Then the ordering is a royal pain in the butt, paying is a royal pain in the butt (read other reviews). The server literally does NOTHING but put the food on the table, she or the owner never even came to the table to ask us if we needed anything. And did I mention that our meals were "served" on PAPER PLATES!!!!!!!!!!!! Is this any way to run a restaurant??? The sushi was decent but not the best. Just across the bridge is SHIKI Japanese Restaurant which is much better than Kanpai and they treat you a lot better than the small staff at Kanpai. BTW, we got there at 6:15 and the place was dead empty. By the time we left there only 4 other people in there. That speaks volumes. It pains me to give this place 2 stars. Our bill was $180 (before tip!) for 4 people who brought their own wine and opened it ourselves and were served dinner on paper plates. We will not be going back to Kanpai.

If you're young, don't come here. You won't be treated the same. If the ONE waitress thinks you don't have money, you get less attention. An older couple came in and the lady complained about her cushion and you bet she did exactly what they said. We asked for water and sodas, that took 10 min to get minus the waters. Mind you, there are only 15 people eating. Another young couple got the same service that I did. The waitress was texting most of the time and had one of the cooks run her food. Which mine took 30 min to get. Didn't get refills or checked on until the end. It was hot in there and others were complaining too. The sushi was decent. That's the only reason I gave it 2 stars was because the sushi was okay. The service is absolute awful. I almost got up to get my own water or speak to a manager. A lot of the younger generation tips well because we've served before. So if you're a waiter or waitress, keep in mind to treat everyone the same. You never know. I had high hopes for this place and was very displeased. Also, they do transactions on an IPad. I understand they're hiring for people to work here, but there's plenty of people looking for jobs.

Kanpai Japanese Restaurant on Johnnie Dodds Boulevard in Mount Pleasant is a great option for delicious and well prepared Japanese food and drinks. I have had a really good experience every time I have been here. They provide excellent customer service here.

The broth was impossibly milky and deeply flavorful -- the kind that stops you mid-bite. The ambiance and service were a complete and welcome surprise. We were visiting Charleston from St. Pete, and having traveled to many countries around the world, I rarely feel compelled to write reviews. But this place moved me. They could easily hold their own as a full-service, five-star ramen restaurant on every level -- price, value, quantity, and the overall experience. The whole nine yards. Highly recommend.

Strangely, mine was brought to me packaged for takeout; I don't know why their in-house ordering would default to that but maybe I hit a wrong button? Maybe some room for process improvement there, but they didn't give me any trouble about transitioning to a dine-in bowl. Their vegetable ramen is promised with a citrus note and there were discernible little bits of yuzu in it. The tofu it comes with is marinated in something sweeter, which wasn't my favorite flavor combination but is typical to the cuisine. I found the flavor improved with tableside spices; they have both a black pepper mix and a house chili powder. The portion size was not huge, and even adding extra inari on the side just satisfied my cravings, and this was after I'd had breakfast. There were some Japanese-speaking people dining there who seemed to be slurping approvingly. I could imagine having had a better experience, but the quality of broth and noodles was worth coming for me.

I appreciated how they filled their spicy tuna rolls with chunky pieces of fish instead of the usual ground tuna used in other sushi restaurants. Their offerings and methods of preparation, paired with their higher price point, suggests they are a higher end establishment. However, the atmosphere was undoubtedly on the casual side, and their service, although friendly and knowledgeable, exuded a lack of experience and the same attention to detail that they put into their food. This was especially apparent after coming from eating at other restaurants in a similar price bracket, where you can sense the waitstaff had a lot of pride and passion for their craft, and it didn't feel like it was just a job for them. In contrast, our experience at Shiki felt far more transactional, and lacked that "customer obsession" and genuine warmth. That said, it's difficult to judge a restaurant's culture just from a single night, and maybe other customers had a different experience from us. Ultimately, if good sushi is your priority and you are willing to splurge a bit, Shiki meets and even exceeds that bar.

They exist, but some of the best are so unassuming you can walk right past them. Shiki is exactly that kind of place--a small, warm, inviting restaurant tucked into a strip mall that feels like a neighborhood secret. Loc, our waiter, greeted us as soon as we sat down with water, a friendly welcome, and a helpful walk-through of the menu. We started with wine and sake--always a promising beginning. The first course was seaweed salad with baby octopus, and I could have happily sipped that dressing like a cocktail. Light, bright, perfectly balanced, with tender octopus that added just the right bite. From there we decided to sample our way through the menu and ordered a lineup of rolls: Spicy Yellowtail, Spicy Shiromi, Rainbow, Spider, Lemon Salmon, and Eel. Each one seemed better than the last. The Spicy Shiromi was the clear standout--absolutely spectacular. What really sets Shiki apart is that every roll has its own distinct flavor instead of the one-note sameness you find at so many sushi spots. You can tell real care goes into the preparation. If you're searching for fresh, thoughtful, genuinely delicious sushi, don't overlook this little gem. Shiki is the real deal.

I ordered the sweet potato roll and swapped the seaweed for soy paper, which I highly recommend. The roll itself was very delicious, and I added tempura flakes for a little crunch. In hindsight, I probably should have asked for extra eel sauce because the flakes made it a touch drier, but the flavor overall was still really good. My husband ordered the GMC roll, which is a spicy crab roll, and that was also included in the buy one, get one special. He really enjoyed it. He also got his go-to salmon roll and requested brown rice instead, and all of the customization instructions were followed perfectly. We also tried the vegetable potstickers. The other option was beef, which we passed on since those are often made with pork as well. The vegetable version just wasn't really my favorite personally, but that may come down to preference more than preparation. Overall, everything tasted fresh, the order was accurate, and it ended up being a really delicious takeout option. After seeing the menu and specials, I can absolutely understand why this place gets mentioned as one of the top happy hour spots around. Some nights even feature all-you-can-eat sushi specials, which honestly sounds wild for sushi prices these days.
