I wish I had taken some pictures during our visit, but l completely forgot. We go from time to time, so l'll be sure to capture some photos next time we're there. To be honest, the place definitely needs some updating--the chairs and tables are all in pretty rough shape, and overall it has more of a dive feel. That said, the food more than makes up for it. The Mexican cuisine here is incredibly authentic, and everything we've tried--tacos, nachos, birria, and more-has been consistently delicious. It's the kind of spot where you overlook the atmosphere because the flavors are just that good. Another huge plus is how affordable it is. I honestly can't think of another Mexican restaurant in the area that can beat their prices for the quality and portion sizes you get. Great prices about 3-4$ per ala carte item so you can try lots of different things. We had a birria burrito, a variety of tacos and the corn ribs. We were visiting Charleston & I really wanted birria tacos. After a quick yelp and google search we chose Tiki Taco. The customer service was okay and our food was decent. My Husband & son ordered the three Birria tacos and I ordered the Birria taco plate with double rice because I did not want any refried beans. They do not have black beans or Charro beans. The meat was seasoned well but I had so much fat on 2 of mine that I could've enjoy them. Yes, I know fat will be in some, but I had a lot. The churros were subpar. Everything came out hot and the customer service was decent, but I wasn't really impressed. On a high note, we were able to pay for another customer's food. He accidentally left his debit card and was willing to leave a very nice drill with the staff for collateral. A very expensive drill actually. He would have ended up having to go get his debit card and travel back to the restaurant. We decided to pay for his food. He was very grateful & even hugged my husband. I've driven by this place many times and have been reluctant to go in based on the name to be completely honest. Wasn't sure the correlation of tiki in the name but then again I'm tough when it comes to mexican restaurants because I've been spoiled with very authentic style tacos in Atlanta and we have yet to find one here we've really liked. We definitely thought it was giving "chain" vibes. Decided to stop by for a quick lunch. Definitely gave me a hole in the wall vibes walking in which is a plus for me and especially when they have lengua on the menu. From first glance of our food I was like yes this is what I'm talking about and this looks legit! The rice and beans, very tasty. The tacos were overall just good I would say. They definitely lacked some salt and that depth of flavor that I'm looking for especially in carne asada. we put a bunch of the salsa verde on and I felt that lacked salt too. Textures were good, I really enjoyed the pork belly which I haven't had at a Mexican place before. But hubby loved the thinly sliced radishes and the grilled Serrano peppers on the side. I've driven by Tiki Taco so many times, and I'm so glad we finally stopped by last night--WOW! It was absolutely delicious. The corn tortillas were the best I've ever had, and overall, this might just be my new favorite Mexican spot in Charleston. This is a pretty good, authentic Mexican restaurant! Staff was friendly and food was fast. We ate outdoors which is a great place to sit back and have some tacos and beer with friends, I took my kids and it was a little loud for us to catch up (mostly because of the group of friends having tacos and beer next to us, not the restaurant's fault... next time I will go inside). Food was extremely well priced, especially for the Charleston area, I spent $47 before tip for 4 people to eat. All I can say is woah. This is the best hole in the wall restaurant I've ever found. It was absolutely delicious! Our service was great. The food had so much flavor. Also, for the price? I'll absolutely be going back. It really doesn't get much better than this. Families were arriving about the time our food was coming out, so that family feel really started to set in. I loved every second of it! Our waitress was very sweet too. She always came to check on us. She clearly knew a lot of the guests that were arriving. Ugh. Take me back!! 4/5 stars, because I couldn't tell which tacos were which. Some kind system to help identify or the waitress identifying the tacos when they came out would have have been fantastic. Tiki Taco was a whole mix of emotions from high to low. I think the only way to describe the experience is a pro's and con's list to sort out the good and the bad. Pro's *Queso with Chorizo was tasty. Hard to mess that up but I'd say it was worth getting. *Most of the tacos were great with the Cabeza aka beef cheek being the belle of the ball. *The fajitas were damn good... like clean the skillet good. These were an absolute hit. *The prices are right. It's crazy when I see people selling street tacos for five dollars each. Yes, these tacos are tiny but they're priced accordingly. *Authenticity! This place is a little hole in the wall and they serve the meats that many others don't like tripe, lengua, etc... They're also doing tortas, sopes, pazol, and even tamales. With such a varied menu there's plenty of reason to come back. Con's *The salsa was weird... more like a thinned down tomato paste. Not my favorite. *The street corn, which is generally a favorite of mine, was no bueno. It's like they dumped a bucket of seasoning over it (check out the collection of it underneath in the photo) making the whole thing inedible. *The biggest kicker is that the service was atrocious. Our server was completely disinterested in the whole process and whenever we needed her for a refill, the check, a missing item (the corn originally didn't come out) she was nowhere to be found. In a place that small, I don't even know how she went missing for such lengths of time. Do the con's outweigh the pro's? I'm not quite sure yet. I am sure I'd like another order of those fajitas and at bare minimum I'm willing to give them another chance. There's also a lot of competition nearby for authentic Mexican so things would need to significantly improve for me to keep coming back. read more

We tried the Summerville location Saturday so thought we would try the Rivers Ave location tonight. We had the chips & cheese with chorizo dip to start... my husband loved the dip! When I walked in, I was the only person in the whole restaurant at 6:30pm and then when we left there were others there, but not super busy. The tacos weren't fantastic but they didn't taste bad. We tried all kinds of tacos. Churros were not what we were expecting, they were filled with some sort of crème based thing, not a fan. Ordered sweet tea and it was watered down. The chips, salsa and guacamole was odd, tasted like it was puréed. Service was ok. Music was too loud, all you heard was music and the servers laughing. So I'm torn bc I can't decide if I'm not ordering right, or I just don't love their food. This was my second visit and I purposely didn't write my review after visit number one bc I blamed myself for not checking my food before leaving. But this time I ate there and went with a quesadilla. Quesadillas are always amazing, right? Welllllll... The menu says: 10" flour tortilla filled with queso blanco and your choice of meat. Served with a side of pico de gallo, sour cream. Comes with a side salad. I asked for no pico since I don't eat raw onions. You can see from the pic what I got. It was barely warm, not cut all the way thru, a half a teaspoon of sour cream on a bed of lettuce. That's it! The meat was chopped up so fine that it didn't look appealing or like steak anymore and the cheese was only on the bottom half and not melted. I was able to make one good bite with a section that had cheese some of my sour cream and I added some salsa verde. But that was it. I'm going to still give a 3 and if I return I'll go with someone that knows how to order bc I feel like I'm being cheated by not finding the place fantastic like others have. read more

Summary: Cheap, good quality food with mediocre taste. I would come back again even if just for the price tag! Longer Story: The Tiki Taco is located in a small house with a dirt lot behind it for plenty of parking. I visited at 3:00pm for a late lunch and the place was still semi packed. The seating area itself feels very cramped but I usually don't care as long as the food is good. The menu has plenty to offer and I was so shocked at how cheap it was! $1.50 tacos and $2.00 sopes! What a deal! I got the Pastor and Asada tacos with a Carnitas sope and rice and beans for only $7.72 after tax. The food itself was my main issue here. It was good! But mediocre. The rice and beans were only slightly warm and somewhat bland. The meat in the tacos lacked any robust flavors though it was kicked up slightly from the fresh onions and cilantro. The corn tortillas were a little soggier than I'm used to but not a huge issue. The Sope was my favorite of the bunch as it was awkwardly warmer than everything else and had more flavor than the rest. Still a nice place to go and fantastic for the bang for your buck! If you're looking for the best tacos in town, however, I would say probably look somewhere else. read more

I love tiki taco! But, I decided to try out the local one near by our hotel. It was not a good experience. The menus were never cleaned per customer so it was actually greasy still. You're using the same pen the guy in front of you just used to sign the receipt.‍ Aside from the fear from Covid, I was so happy to have the cabeza tacos.
