My dad, having grown up during the Great Depression, never liked to see perfectly good things get thrown out. Many years ago, he managed to rescue a nice-looking Relic brand watch that was in the trash at work. When I complained about not having a watch, he gave this to me and I enjoyed wearing it until the crystal cracked and shattered. Left on a bookcase shelf for about 20 years, I dusted the watch off recently and decided to see if it could be fixed. Found Barat's on the internet and brought it down. The crystal was an easy fix and reasonably priced but when the battery was changed, the watch still wouldn't work because of water damage and a battery leak. I asked if it could be fixed and Yakov said he could get a new movement for 60 dollars. I decided to go ahead with the repair because the timepiece held a lot of sentimental value. After a few days, the watch was fixed and it runs great. The time and date were correctly set too when I picked it up. No lectures about spending money to repair a lower-end watch either. My wife's watch lost the crown which enables the watch to be set the proper time. I found Barat's on the internet and brought the watch to him. Mr. Barat said the crown and post had become separated from the mechanism. Said he could order replacement parts and see if that would enable the watch to run again. What a wonderful experience. Mr. Barats is so knowledgeable. Brought a ring in for resizing. He educated us on the material, difficulty, and the pros and cons of getting the ring sized by him vs a jeweler who uses a laser. He made sure we understood the difference and that with the type of metal the ring may not end up perfectly round because of the setting. We decided to go for it and the ring came out perfect. He did it right in front us, which was fascinating to watch. Other jewelry stores refused to resize it, but he took on the challenge. Was looking for a place that could service my mechanical automatic watch from a very traditional German brand that has no US representation. The watch needed adjustments and service of the movement after all these years. Through reviews, I found Barats close to my workplace. He was very friendly and knowledgable and interested in doing this service. Understanding that this kind of work will take several days, I left my treasured watch with him. He called me with updates on the service, explained what is wrong and needs to be done. After the service was complete he called again and asked to keep it for a couple more days to make sure it keeps its time. Once Yakov was satisfied with the accuracy of the watch he let me know it is ready for pickup. I was amazed to see the very inexpensive bill and the watch as good as new! Bad businessman. Bad customer service. I brought a necklace in on a Friday, picked it up on a Saturday. Wore it on Monday, it broke again on Monday. I thought "oh, he might have missed a spot." The necklace had to be repaired in a few places. I returned to the kiosk the following Thursday - I wanted to return as soon as I could, to hope that he would remember me and my necklace. He did. As I laid out my necklace on the counter, he stood with his hands in his pockets - not engaging me in anyway. And said "that is not my wire", "that is not my problem". I said so you won't repair it for me? He said yes, but it would cost money. I picked up my necklace and walked away. I was really mad. Does he not know that repeat customers are the best customers? I like this guy a lot. I went to him because I wanted to get sizing balls put on my engagement ring to stop it from spinning. He advised me that he could add them, but was very upfront that they may not solve my problem and could also come with their own disadvantages (discomfort; price; mismatched metal). I appreciated his honesty, because he could have just done the work and made the sale, but he instead acted as an objective consultant. Had the one I wanted for a reasonable price AND replaced the watch pins at little to no cost when others wanted to charge $10 each! The young man working this day was very personable and kind. Next day I returned to have charms removed from one charm bracelet and placed on another. 9 charms in all, sterling silver, $50 total. More than fair price.
