Their prices for haircuts and salon work are unmatched, especially if you compare vs. the next street over for subpar service - Newbury St. If you're a working professional, college student, or just in the vicinity and need hair services, you will not be disappointed. I know of handfuls of others who have been going here for 15-20 years, weekly or monthly. This might just be the crappiest haircut I've ever gotten! And I have never given a place a bad review before, even when people have accidentally taken chunks out of my hair. I went in and asked for a crop, which is a well known haircut (examples attached). I should have known something was wrong when I started naming and describing haircuts and the lady had no idea what I was talking about. I had plenty of hair to start with, but she just kept hacking and chopping until it almost looked like a buzz cut. What hair is left is super patchy. Super short in some places with random long stands and locks. In fact, the left side is noticeably longer than the right side. I don't know how this place has gotten such good reviews. I accidentally woke up the sleeping lady and was coerced into a haircut with her. I asked for Ron anyway, and she said he no longer works there :( The haircut started out alright, she buzzed my sides with a #2 as asked, but she did leave a line at first. Then she busted out the scissors. This is when I began to question her methods. She was cutting all over the place and rarely looked where she was cutting, judging only by whether or not the tuft of hair she pulled was longer than her finger was wide. The end result was a cut a little shorter than what I wanted and messy looking on top. The whole time she only asked a few questions or remained silent. I nearly fell asleep twice. Maybe the infamous Ron does still work there and I was tricked, but I'm going to look for another barber nonetheless. read more

After nine years of haircuts, I must finally say, "Ron is great." My brother told me about this place during my senior year of high school. But for one occasion a long time ago, I have always had Ron cut my hair. I have pretty basic preferences when it comes to hairstyle, and Ron is efficient, skilled, and meticulous. Plus, he's a great person to talk to when you're having your hair cut. He's got some great insights on movies, music, and culture in general. It's a nice 20 minutes once a month that I spend having my hair cut here. I recommend calling ahead, though Ron can usually squeeze you in if you're willing to wait for a bit. Also, this place is cash only. As of today, a regular men's haircut costs $18, though I suspect that he could charge several dollars more if he wanted to. I woke up this morning to discover that my formerly cute pixie cut was now a full-blown David Spade in Joe Dirt mullet. It was all I could think about all day. Sure, classes were interesting, but who can concentrate on classes and learning when your hair is a mullet? Not me. Anyway, as soon as classes were over, I zipped into Ojee's to inquire about their prices, since I'm a student and on a budget and all that. It's located conveniently near Hynes, and I walk past it every day, so I figured, why not? I like to consider myself an adventurous person, and I'm really not too particular about my hair, except when it reminds me of Joe Dirt. Anyway, I explained to the lady that I wanted to grow it out, and only needed a trim. She seemed to understand, and chopped away. 20 minutes later and I look acceptable again. My hair is once again at its baseline C+ look (told ya I don't have high standards). All joking aside, my hair is back to pixie, and I told the stylist I would be back in 2 months for another trim - because we're growing it out together! Sans mullet! She asked for my name and charged me $20 flat, even waving my hand aside as I dug into my wallet for a tip. Bottom line: quick haircut without jibber jabber, and probably the least expensive haircut I could get in the Back Bay. See ya in 2 months when the mullet returns, Ojee. read more

(I still don't know why no stars is not an option.) Willing to trust the Yelp! reviews, I should've asked for Ron. When I sat down and the older woman grabbed a comb from underneath a pile of other combs and brushes in a basket covered in hair (NOT in barbicide!), I should've known to walk out. No clean comb, no spray on the clippers, no sign of cleanliness anywhere. A female customer even came over and removed her rollers in front of me and placed her pins on the same towel my "stylist" was using while "cutting" my hair. Then she went to town on my head with a waving/stabbing motion with a 3 guard and when I commented it looked lumpy she said don't worry. I asked if she displayed her barber license anywhere she said she wasn't a barber and would never employ a barber at her salon. She said the licenses are available when the people come to ask for the licenses. I sat through the rest of the hack job and now have a pyramid of hair on the front of my head, an uneven cowlick off center from my part, and there's a chunk missing from behind my right ear. I got this done about 2 hours ago and just realized after showering at home. I went back to complain and ask for my money back but they're closed. I'll follow up until I get refunded, but steer clear of this place for a simple, traditional men's cut. read more

I got a recommendation for this place from a friend of a friend. Decided to check it out. When I called up, the receptionist was kind of pushy and rushed me. Yet I still post 5 stars. I had Ron cut my hair. The dude is this chubby brown dude with a really cool mane of hair. He is also totally cool to talk to, and a very talented stylist. He gave me a money haircut (nothing extreme) that was very satisfying. He has a cool vibe, and that really made me comfortable while getting the 'do. We chatted, and it was done before I knew. I just got back from it, and although I haven't got any compliments YET, I know it will get a few. I'm going out tonight with my new 'do and club kicks, and I will be knocking the socks off of the fems. In the words of my man MC Paul Barman: "My dandy voice makes the most anti-choice granny's panties moist." EDIT: the cut is 18$. My boy Ron hooks it up tight for a good price. He's a skilled barber / stylist, and he's a good dude to boot. I only get my hair cut probably 3 or 4 times per year, but I always come here, as it's not too expensive ($18 + $2 for tip, holla at ya boy). I usually have my hair cut done by Nate a master barber at the Barhersop Lounge down on Newbury St. After hearing that Nate had transferred to a different location outside of the city, I decided that it's time I try someone new. Following extensive research and reading reviews for the best men's barbershop in Boston, I came across Ojee's with average expectations. The second I walked into the shop, I was immediately appalled by how disorganized and unprofessional the shop was. Used combs left unattended and hairs lying everywhere. Yet, I didn't judge him for where he worked but how well he gets the job done. I showed him a picture of my previous haircut and explained how I would like it done - hoping for the best onwards. To my dismay, my haircut turned out nothing like how I expected to be. My top came out to be around 1.5 inches compared to my ordinary 2.5-3 inches. The front of my hair where I usually style was now too short. My opinion to any new customers is that Ronn only knows one type of haircut regardless of whatever you tell him to do. Short on the sides, an inch or so on the top, as well as in your front. If you want an example of the hairstyle, check out all the profile pictures of the 5 start reviewers. That's the haircut you will get. If you prefer a short all around haircut at a decent price, I would highly suggest Ronn ($21 with student discount). But if you're looking for a more stylish haircut, I would rather spend an extra $20/25 on a more professional barber. read more

I started coming here on the recommendation of multiple neighbors (we all live within walking distance). I've now been coming here since 2008, and I've always been happy. Many of my friends who have moved out of the neighborhood in the years since continue to commute in from the suburbs to get their hair cut. On a whim and because of random recommendations, I made an appointment with Ron at Ojee's for this morning. Firstly, of Ojee's, let's say, if I wasn't looking for it, I would have (and probably have many times before) walked right passed it. It is anything but flashy, and once inside, if it wasn't for the one stylist in the process of finishing a cut, I would have thought the place was closed down. Appearances aside, Ron called me for my cut and immediately made me feel welcome in his chair. An uber expensive salon experience this is not, but I love my hair cut, my neatly trimmed brows and Ron certainly deserves the accolades he receives. The cut was only $22, and even with a well-deserved tip, I still walked out for less than half of what I would have paid at some trendy booth rental shop. Call for an appointment. If you can't get through the first, second or even third time, call back again. It's definitely worth it. read more

I'm a bit shocked at the near perfect reviews for this place and Ron. He was nice as could be, the price is okay ($22 now) and he had me in and out pretty quickly. He started cutting and when I said something about what he was doing, he told me he needed to do it a different way because if he did not I "would hate the way it looked in four weeks." The result was a shorter haircut than I wanted and the sides of my hair uneven and sticking straight out unless I gel it down. I decided to give it a few days to see how it turned out, and that's the only reason this is a two star and not one star. If I could give this place a half of a star, I would. First let me state, Ron who mostly does men's hair - he rocks in every way - he alone should get 5 stars. Every time I'm there, he's always busy and everyone walks out looking good. He's friendly, nice, and actually listens to what you want and only offers advice if you ask him - not pushy at all. ALWAYS get your hair cut by Ron, don't let the owner, Ojee, talk you into a haircut if Ron's not there. The half a start goes to the owner Ojee. Her clients are mostly people of color, African and/or black women such as myself. The prices are great but I don't think she actually cares about the state of your hair. I've been going to her for awhile because I just needed a basic set and curl and a touch up every 8-12 weeks. However, I noticed that my hair was starting to break off and fall out more frequently. It pained me greatly to start searching for another hair stylists but I'm so grateful that I did. I finally realized that Ojee really didn't know how to take care or maintain a black person's hair. She'll relax your hair without taken into consideration what strength should be applied and she tends to put half on your scalp while applying (and yes that crap burns when it sits on your skin). And it seems she never uses the same products twice but always trying something new. And for cleanliness, I don't think she cleans any of her tools. She uses the same fine tooth comb on all her clients but doesn't wash it between clients. All her brushes have someone elses hair it, and she'll just use it on you without batting an eye. You might ask why I kept going back? Because I always thought it would be better next time. And for the record it wasn't. One visit at another hair salon and my hair has never looked so good. So women of color - this place does have good prices but won't do anything for you in the long haul. read more

During that time there have been a few occasions when I had to get a haircut somewhere else (didn't have time to get to shop, he was on vacation, etc.).
