We visited Barbieri & Kempe on 05/23/2026 at about 4:30pm. This location is on the beautiful Arcade Plaza, close to the Art Museum and the Superior Court, and right off of State Street in a quaint courtyard type of arcade/plaza. We had a great time here, where we sat enjoying a tasting for over an hour. There is an outdoor and indoor area, and both were enjoyable. The person at the tasting room today was very friendly, and explained everything in detail. We ordered one mixed tasting and one rose tasting. Both were delicious. The place is very nice, and they even had the Dodgers game on tv. They have an attached small cheese shop, where you can also pick up some snacks to go with your wine. My friend and I wanted to try a new wine bar before we had dinner and we found Barbieri & Kempe. It's located in the La Arcada Plaza alleyway adjacent to a gift shop called Lewis & Clark. The ambiance is so cute, they have nice seating indoors with a cheese room adjacent, as well as plenty of outdoor seating where furry friends are welcome. The server was so great and walked us through some of the Rose's they offered and let us sample a few before we decided on the 2023 Rose of Cabernet. The wine was great, we really enjoyed our bottle and relaxing out on the patio. I think they offer wine club membership, and if you want to eat, charcuterie plates but I am not completely sure as we were just planning on having one bottle of wine. Barbieri & Kempe Wines is such a gem. Ben was incredibly knowledgeable and provided genuinely great service without ever making it feel over the top and pushy. The wine selection is delicious--I tried a few and loved every one. We happened to stop in during Game 7 of the Lakers series, and I was pleasantly surprised to see they had the game playing on a retractable screen (which they mentioned they only use for select games). Even better--no volume--so it didn't interfere with the ambiance at all. Honestly, it was the perfect setup. They have the option to select your charcuterie from their deli case, which Ben beautifully put together. It felt relaxed, personal, and exactly what I want in a wine bar experience. I loved the wine so much I ended up joining their wine club! Located in the charming La Arcada courtyard, this spot is definitely one I'll be coming back to. read more

On a rare rainy Monday in downtown Santa Barbara, and after a tasty lunch at Satellite Wine Bar, I discovered Barbieri & Kempe, a delightful tasting room tucked nicely in the La Arcada Plaza. I hadn't heard much about this wine or winemaker, but walking by their big window and looking onto their comfy lounge and bright wall-of-wines, I knew I needed to enter and learn more. Upon entering we met Ra Ra who was behind the bar area and offered a warm and welcoming smile and greeting. She made us feel right at home and was able to answer every question we had about Barbieri & Kempe. It's always refreshing to meet someone like Ra Ra who knows so much about the varietals, vineyards, and wine styles. Once we were hearing all about the various tasting options and looking at the tasting list, the one blend that caught my eye was something I had never seen or tasted before, and I was excited to learn more. Ra Ra was gracious in offering us a taste of the 2017 Barbieri Romanvs, Syrah and Viognier blend. Two of my favorite varietals, and all in one bottle. And it is delicious. I think I have found my new favorite SB County wine. Didn't get to experience a full tasting, but did buy a bottle of Romanvs and am excited to go back and spend more quality time with Ra Ra and Barbieri & Kempe. read more

This winery is tucked away in the lovely La Arcada Plaza, and just a few steps away from the downtown area. They have outdoor seating and currently indoor seating as of 5.8.21. I've been here twice and also visited their winery in Los Olivos. I had the pleasure of meeting the owner, Paolo Barbieri at the Los Olivos location. He tended to our table with such a friendly and warm welcome. Thank you Paolo for your service and delicious wines! My favorite wine is the Kempe Cabernet Franc, which is by far the best I've had! I did have a favorite Cab Franc at another winery in town, but hands down the Kempe one beats it! I recently tried their Cab Franc Rosé. Who knew this existed! It is a dry rosé and light bodied. You can taste and smell the subtle notes and aromas of passion fruit, orange peels, and sour cherries. I definitely recommend this on a warm sunny day. They are now serving specialty cheeses, along with crackers and a unique variety of jams. I meant to get a picture but forgot. That means I must pay another visit soon lol. On the first Saturday of each month, local bands perform out in the courtyard beginning at 2pm. I believe it is twice a month for performances. Beautiful tasting room located within La Arcada Courtyard. Great outdoor space during COVID, but their indoor space looked so nice!!! Super comfy furnitures, cool QR code scanner for their menus, and friendly staff. Shelly was able to customize the tasting menu, and guided through their selection of wines - I told Shelly I love whites, and Bordeaux varietals, and she shared whites, and Bordeaux varietal wines that they make. My favorites were Vermentino, and Illumina (equal parts of cab sauv/cab franc/merlot). But the cheese selection was out of this world. Probably the best cheese selection in Santa Barbara. Turfullo (truffle cheese), armadeous, and campozolo (sorry about these spelling) are just my favorites that they had. If you think you know cheese, their super knowledgeable staff will blow your mind with the awesome cheese selection they have here. We had such a fantastic time with Barbieri & Kempe's great wine, awesome cheeses, super-friendly staff, and super cool guests that made our evening so memorable. I can't wait to go back to Barbieri & Kempe in the La Aracada with my friends. If you are there, make sure to ask for Shelly - she is so knowledgable on wines, vineyards, cheese, and everything! A good place with some good (and expensive) wines. My husband and I were walking by on our way home from dinner, and we thought the patio looked so inviting that we stopped to order a glass of wine... only AFTER we ordered and paid for our wine did the employee tell us that she was closing the tasting room soon. This was at 6:50, ten minutes before closing, so she would prefer that we didn't sit outside, as she wanted to start taking in the patio furniture now... The patio was literally the reason we chose to stop by. And now that we had already paid, she asked us to not use the patio. At this point, we were feeling pretty unwelcome, so we drank our wines as quickly as possible, which was too bad because they're good wines. We still sat on the the patio as there were others there, and were gone before closing time anyway. What's with bars and restaurants in SB all wanting to close before their actual closing hours? Like if you want to close at 6:30, cool, just tell me "we're closed" before you pour my wine and take my money! Out for our daily walk and decided to stop and relax with a nice glass of red wine. Decided to try Barbieri Kempe in the La Arcada. The three stars are for the location. La Arcada probably one of the most delightful places to sit in downtown Santa Barbara. Beautiful and quiet to average noise with soothing music. However Barbieri was a disappointment. The young lady acted as if we were bothering her. Maybe she was having an off day? She did not seem very knowledgeable about their wine and it seemed an effort for her to answer my questions. We choose a glass of Syrah from apparently the Beullton area, no more information was offered. Enjoyed sitting outside and sipping our wine but it would have been far better in an actual wine glass. Who serves a sixteen dollar glass of wine in plastic? Sat by the fountain and really enjoyed the ambiance, but won't be rushing back to Barbieri. Next time. I was walking through La Arcada on my way to another place when I was immediately attracted to this cute pup who was leaning out of a window (on the first floor). I was like...what is this place?? and found Barbieri & Kempe. Firstly, I love the space. It's got a huge window that opens up and I'd imagine (if I was sitting inside) would make me feel like there's a natural flow to the outside. Second, they have a bunch of well distanced tables outside, which is where I sat in petting distance of the friendly pup, of course. They have QR codes on all their tables to access the menu. I had a very delicious Viognier and my boyfriend had the Romanvs Syrah, which also tasted great! Also, bonus points - one of the owners/winemakers, Erin was there and we had a lovely chat with her! Angelica was great and personable, the hubby and I had a lovely flight of wine while chatting with her in between customers. Wine was phenomenal, I had the white and rose flight and he had the reds. Nice full bodied reds that you dont find as much out here in Santa Barbara.
