I'm seeing some reviews describe this restaurant being in an old castle. I think that's a former location. The restaurant is now in a regular building along a busy road and across the street from a cemetery. It's a popular place. I waited about thirty minutes on a Saturday night for a table. While I was waiting, a local gentleman couldn't stop saying nice things about the place. He said it's been his favorite restaurant for over 60 years. I'm not sure I share his enthusiasm, but I enjoyed eating a perfectly acceptable and a-ok dinner. I ordered Jose's Special Enchilada Meal - three enchiladas served with red pork chile and a tostada. It may not look like much, but it's mighty filling. I liked the enchiladas - especially the cheese one. I wish the red sauce held more flavor. I didn't finish the tostada - not because it was bad - but because I was full. My server was pleasant, however I thought the dining room was a little crowded.

Food hasn't changed in 30 years. Chips and queso the best. Had the combo platter, so much food couldn't eat it all. We ordered top shelf margaritas and they were terrible that's why I'm giving the three stars. Should have sent them back. Ask what kind of tequila if you order a margarita. Was able to walk in and get a table without waiting although they were busy.

Some of my favorite Mexican food I've ever had. The portions were huge and the prices were wonderful. A Big Mac would have costed more than my whole plate of food. The service was wonderful

We came here for my daughters birthday. The food wasn't very good. I ordered street tacos. They were the smallest I've ever seen. Nothing we ordered had much favor at all. I would not come back.

Barbosa's is a St Joseph institution, now only operating one location on Frederick Avenue. Each time Ive dined there, the food has been delicious and ample. Something unique about this restaurant is their homemade chips. They appear to be fried in lard, as they are large and incredibly flaky. Unlike most Mexican restaurants, these chips are understandably not complementary. However, i cannot go here without ordering them along with the meaty-cheese sauce. I always feel like I run out of cheese before I run out of chips :/ I will often stop to order the chips and cheesy dip for carryout. While not the best Mexican food I have eaten, compared to options available in the St Joseph area, you will most likely experience enjoyable food and a good experience overall.

This is some of the worst food I have eaten. Usually if I don't like something I can still eat some of it but that was not the case here the only thing I ate was the shredded lettuce on the plate. The chips are terrible the meat is not good. Taco Bell is better than this. The mints are good!

That changed yesterday, when Diana Condori, the bar manager, was named a 2026 James Beard Outstanding Professional in Cocktail Service semifinalist. As we love supporting restaurants and bars that receive that kind of recognition, my wife and I headed to Fern Bar that evening. I was especially curious what exactly a "sugarcane and agave bar" meant. We arrived around 5:30pm and found only a handful of guests inside. After congratulating the bartender who first served us, he mentioned that Diana was working that night and would stop by to meet us. During our conversation, Diana shared that she didn't even know she had been nominated. She woke up Tuesday to a call from owner Bryan Arri, who said he had big news and was coming over. Her first thought was that something terrible had happened--like the bar had burned down. Instead, he showed up with coffee and told her she was a James Beard honoree. Diana is originally from Bolivia and has lived in Kansas City most of her life, with the exception of time spent in San Francisco during the pandemic. She further refined her cocktail craft through local pop-ups in Kansas City under the name Condor's Cove. When Bryan was preparing to open Fern Bar, he reached out to bring her onto the team. The printed cocktail menu immediately reminded me of the Monarch and the Mercury Room--not surprising given Bryan's background at Manifesto and the Monarch. Thoughtful, intentional, and clearly designed for people who appreciate serious cocktails. We planned on having one or two drinks but ended up staying for three, thanks to an outstanding lineup and a memorable conversation with Diana. We tasted: * No Fly Zone - Rum, agave, pineapple foam * Mr. Collage - Smooth, elegant, egg-white cocktail * Three Negroni Lunch - Bitter, boozy, and beautifully balanced * Pendergast No. 4 - Complex and spirit-driven * It's Bananas - Banana liqueur with bright tropical notes * Off the Rails - Creative and well-executed rum/agave cocktail One downside of many cocktail-forward bars is the lack of food, but Fern Bar offers two varieties of mini burritos for $4--just enough protein to keep things balanced while indulging. Great concept, exceptional service, and truly memorable drinks. Check it out--and be sure to say hello to Diana.

The venue looked perfect, so I reached out to Amanda and booked the event. A few weeks before the brunch, I had questions about flowers and parking. I called Amanda several times and never received a return call. I also texted her and discovered that the phone number listed on the website was not working. At that point, I became concerned and honestly wondered if I had been scammed. Since I live out of town, I asked my sister to stop by the venue. She went there twice. The first time, she spoke with someone at the bar who said Amanda would call me back, but I never heard from her. The second time, my sister was able to speak directly with Amanda, who said she had been very busy and would contact me. Eventually, Amanda called and apologized, but I felt she often spoke over me when I was trying to express my concerns. I found it unprofessional that multiple calls and texts went unanswered and that my sister had to make two trips to the venue before I received a response. A few days before the event, Amanda apologized again and assured me she would make things right. She told me she would be present on the day of the brunch and also mentioned she would reserve a parking space in front of the building for some of our elderly guests since the venue is located on a busy street. On the day of the event, I arrived to find scaffolding in front of the building, which was disappointing and affected the appearance of the venue. When I called Amanda, she informed me that she would not be there after all. The reserved parking space that had been discussed was also not available. The brunch itself went well. We had approximately 35 guests, the drinks were very good, and the staff members who were there worked hard. However, there were only two staff members serving our group, and the overall customer service leading up to the event left much to be desired. As someone planning an important event from out of town, communication and responsiveness are extremely important. While the event itself was successful, I was disappointed by the lack of follow-through, inconsistent communication, and unmet expectations. My hope is that Third Place Lounge improves its customer service so future clients have a smoother and more positive experience.
