I've driven past the Fern Bar countless times, but had never stopped in. Truthfully, I knew next to nothing about it. That changed yesterday, when Diana Condori, the bar manager, was named a 2026 James Beard Outstanding Professional in Cocktail Service semifinalist. As we love supporting restaurants and bars that receive that kind of recognition, my wife and I headed to Fern Bar that evening. I was especially curious what exactly a "sugarcane and agave bar" meant. We arrived around 5:30pm and found only a handful of guests inside. After congratulating the bartender who first served us, he mentioned that Diana was working that night and would stop by to meet us. During our conversation, Diana shared that she didn't even know she had been nominated. She woke up Tuesday to a call from owner Bryan Arri, who said he had big news and was coming over. Her first thought was that something terrible had happened--like the bar had burned down. Instead, he showed up with coffee and told her she was a James Beard honoree. Diana is originally from Bolivia and has lived in Kansas City most of her life, with the exception of time spent in San Francisco during the pandemic. She further refined her cocktail craft through local pop-ups in Kansas City under the name Condor's Cove. When Bryan was preparing to open Fern Bar, he reached out to bring her onto the team. The printed cocktail menu immediately reminded me of the Monarch and the Mercury Room--not surprising given Bryan's background at Manifesto and the Monarch. Thoughtful, intentional, and clearly designed for people who appreciate serious cocktails. We planned on having one or two drinks but ended up staying for three, thanks to an outstanding lineup and a memorable conversation with Diana. We tasted: * No Fly Zone - Rum, agave, pineapple foam * Mr. Collage - Smooth, elegant, egg-white cocktail * Three Negroni Lunch - Bitter, boozy, and beautifully balanced * Pendergast No. 4 - Complex and spirit-driven * It's Bananas - Banana liqueur with bright tropical notes * Off the Rails - Creative and well-executed rum/agave cocktail One downside of many cocktail-forward bars is the lack of food, but Fern Bar offers two varieties of mini burritos for $4--just enough protein to keep things balanced while indulging. The cocktails were all very aesthetically pleasing but I found that most were not very tasty for my palette! We tried the mojito which was 7/10, the banana one I loved the little monkeys on it but the cocktail for me was too strong 5/10, the margarita was also very strong and has a dried lime instead of fresh, I would have preferred fresh myself 3/10. The Paloma was 10/10 very refreshing! The pina colada was also 10/10 super yummy and light. We also tried off the rails and it was 0/10 for us. The no fly zone was strong but decent 6/10. This is a cool cocktail spot with friendly staff and creative drinks. We tried the margarita and their take on a manhattan, both were awesome. Our waiter reminded us several times if we don't like our drink, let him know and we can try something new. This encouraged us to pick drinks outside our comfort zone and it paid off. I wish I could give a 4.5 to Fern Bar--I really loved the service (everyone is super friendly and knowledgeable!) and drinks were FABULOUS. The only element that I want to knock them down a bit for was that there are hardly any ferns (just small ones...fern bar!) and the seating, while super cool looking, was not my favorite to enjoy some great conversations and great drinks with friends! We made a reservation on a Tuesday for a great session of drinks! Coming in around 4:45 pm, we didn' have an issue on that day, but I'm sure this could get really busy on other days--so probably best to make a reservation! When we were settled and looked at the menu, the server gave us some great suggestions. The three of us tried 6 different cocktails over the course of the evening, and they were all delicious. Being a rum and mezcal place, their offerings of gin and other drinks helped us try a wide array of cocktails! Some notes for anyone watning to take the plunge, be ready to search around for a parking spot nearby--there is street parking but also a parking garage (that you'll have to pay for!) not too far. Ok had a good time, and you should consider this one if you have an open evening. The wife and I have been to some recent tiki bars, and this has a great selection of drinks to try out. It seems the menu changes every so often, so I'll probably end up coming again to try some new things. We came in at about 5:45 or so and sat at the bar. It's a relatively small venue so call ahead if you have a big group. Our bartenders were nice and were willing to hang out and chat a bit while making drinks. Nice place, nice people, great drinks. I was on the hunt for a spot with great non-alcoholic drink options and came across Fern Bar. We made a reservation just in case, but honestly, it wasn't necessary on a weekday--we were able to walk in and seat ourselves at the bar with no problem. There is really not that much seating, as it is not very large, but they were able to seat our party of 4 fairly quickly when we came on a Saturday evening in cold January. It is so warm and cozy inside, my glasses immediately fogged up when we stepped in. The waiter was super cool, and he had great recommendations based on what kind of drinks I liked. I enjoyed my drink, it was a proper cocktail, so very strong. I was not able to finish it, but it was definitely a good choice for me. It is very loud inside, so be prepared with maybe concert earplugs or be very good at reading your companions' lips. They have a live DJ and the volume is definitely rambunctious. I was very impressed with the menu design, I loved their KC architectural buildings theme. It's Friday night and we're looking for something to do after dinner. I just happens to find this bar and lounge in the downtown crossroad area. This might just be my new favorite place. A hidden gem in the corner of Broadway and Southwest Blvd. Located inside a historic bank building. We got seated at the bar for a few drinks. Bartenders were very nice and gave us details of each drink. They also said that Fern has been in business since January 2024. Fairly new and Yelp's ratings has been really good. Their drink menu is exquisite and quite unique. Each drink menu comes with a QR code that takes you to a Spotify music playlist. They also have a live DJ on Thursday through Saturday night. Highly recommend making a reservation because it gets packed in here. They have a long bar that is first-come, first-serve, and they have a bunch of reserved tables, but it's pretty small in there. As someone who doesn't drink alcohol anymore, I sometimes feel super awkward or judged when hanging out in bars. Our bartender was so nice and welcoming, and she whipped up off-menu NA drinks for us based on flavors we like! The drinks were delicious. Everyone couldn't stop raving about the espresso martini. The best part is that Tacos Valentina is available in Fern Bar as well! Place your order with the bartender, and then feast! They're offering brunch on the weekends too! Their spin on a Crunchwrap is to die for. Wherever Tacos Valentina goes, I go too! The one thing about this location is that parking is a challenge... since it's located on Broadway with no parking lot, you have to find street parking which can be difficult in Crossroads on a weekend. First I want to acknowledge all the cool, hip bars and restaurants popping up in the metro. With that said this is def one of them. Located on the corner of Broadway & SW Blvd in the former Architectural salvage space, this cool bar is definitely worth a stop. It only seats about 30 maybe 45ish people. So reservations are necessary to secure a seat. The decor is hip and luxe. In addition to some delicious tequila and mezcal cocktails, they also serve zero proof ones that are just as pretty and flavorful. Service is good. You can nosh on street tacos, burritos, elotes, and chips by Tacos Valentina if you get hungry. I had the shrimp tacos which were yummy! Their homemade hot sauce was no punk!! Parking is a challenge so be prepared to walk a block or two (or more). Also don't get too comfy. They kick you out after 1.5 hours. I have been following tacos Valentina since the very start and was told they were going to be collaborating with a new cocktail bar so of course I had to try it and support one of my fav local businesses. The vibes are so fun instantly brought my mood up being here! Staff were so welcoming and helpful with the drink menu and suggestions! I ended up going with the pina colada and ranch water! The pina colada wasn't too sweet which I was worried about but provided more refreshing hints of lime and coconut. Cobra's Fang had very little flavor, wouldn't recommend it at all. El Diablo had more flavor but not what I expected, the ginger beer is almost nonexistent and the lemon and Giffard Cassis Noir take over. Others in our group had the Margarita which was a good classic. The Grass is Greener was super flavorful and would highly recommended it. One of the best bars I have ever been to anywhere in the United States and if I could give Fern Bar more stars I would. Everything about my experience on a recent weekend night was outstanding. I went with a few friends and we were able to immediately get seats at the bar. Fern Bar's ambiance was outstanding-the interior was classy and welcoming without being ostentatious. Fern Bar had an extensive alcohol selection, and the drinkware was beautiful. Fern Bar served my cocktail in a handmade glass that was made down the street. The lighting was elegantly dim without being difficult to see and the DJ nailed it with every song played. The music was at a volume where you could still have a conversation and be heard but had good energy. There were plenty of people at Fern Bar without it being overcrowded, providing the right balance of energy and space. We received top-notch service all evening-our bartender was incredibly friendly and helpful and went above and beyond. Each person would give the bartender general vibes about what they were looking for in a drink and the bartender had the skill to craft a cocktail that the person wanted. The bartender also gave us free chips, salsa, and guacamole, all of which seemed house-made and were delicious. The bartender also introduced us to some unique liquors, such as a Mexican whiskey made from corn. I got the Key cocktail, which had a delicious rum-base and great flavor, served in a beautiful, handmade ceramic cup. I cannot more highly recommend Fern Bar if you live/are travelling to Kansas City, even if you are not a bar person. I look forward to coming back someday! read more
