The service was very good, although our prime waiter seemed to be done with us after we ordered small portions (we are in our 70's and can no longer eat large meals), and no alcohol. I counted at least 3 times that my friends' sentences were abruptly cut off so that we could be asked about our water choices. This was my first time dining at Barbounia while visiting NYC, and it ended up being such a lovely lunch. I met two friends there along with my daughter. It was the perfect place to settle in, enjoy a great meal, and catch up. I ordered the branzino, which was beautifully prepared and packed with flavor. Everything on the plate felt fresh and thoughtfully balanced. One of those dishes that seems simple until you realize how perfectly everything works together. My daughter ordered the lamb kofta kebab terracota, and that was the surprise star of the table. The dish arrived hidden beneath a dome of warm flatbread. Peeling back the bread revealed the lamb and everything tucked underneath, which made the whole experience feel a little theatrical and fun. The bread came out warm from the oven, and dipping pieces into the rich sauce underneath was absolutely delicious. Every bite was better than the last. I'm not usually someone who talks about another person's entrée, but I kept stealing bites of this one! We also shared the hummus, which was excellent. I came here for a work dinner. I had to email them because there were more than 10 of us. If there are more than 10 people, you have to do a pre-fixe menu. It's 4 courses for $95 and you pick between lamb and steak. We chose steak menu. When I arrived, they had me confirm how many people were in the party. I had said 13 but it was actually only 12. The hostesses were being weird when they asked me to confirm because they hadn't set up our table yet. So I had to count each person with me since we were all there but they also could have helped me count.... Was in the city for a comedy show at the Gramercy Theatre Friday night and wanted to have dinner after. We threw out a random search and stumbled upon Barbounia less than a 10 min drive away and we were SO happy we did. We were able to make a reservation for 15 mins later before we headed over. We were greeted as soon as we walked in. It was very busy and bustling and the music was loud. The ambiance in here is beautiful! The decor is very modern gives very European vibes and with fall colors on the floral decorations and they just mesh so well. Service: was really good. It seemed to be all hands on deck. Everyone was helping and checking in on each table. Prices are reasonable as well. Drinks: we only had 1 round because we were already drinking at the show. I had the "smoking fruit" cocktail and my date had the Sauvignon Blanc. The cocktail was pretty good. Food: we started with the grilled octopus, calamari, and spicy feta served with bread. Everything was amazing. The octopus was grilled perfectly and wasn't chewy at all. The calamari was fried perfect. The spicy feta was fresh but not spicy at all though, not even like black pepper level spicy so not sure why the name. For entrees we had the branzino and the chicken shish kebab with a size of grilled mushrooms. The entrees were really good but the mushrooms were amazing! Had lunch at Barbounia with my friend and we were able to snag a cozy corner table. Our server was super attentive without hovering -- water always filled, checked in the perfect amount. I ordered the chopped salad with added chicken, and it was fresh, flavorful, and exactly what I wanted in a mid-day meal. Definitely on the pricier side for what it is. Loved the ambiance and the service, but an additional $12 for grilled chicken on top of a $23 salad seems a bit steep, that being said the portions are large. Seven of us celebrated a birthday dinner at Barbounia recently. We shared a lot of appetizers, then each ordered our own main course. I wish we could have managed dessert but by then everyone was too full. We ordered the five mezze platter for the table, a large Israeli salad, the octopus, the fried artichokes and three orders (two beyond the free one) of the bread. I could have eaten the whole octopus appetizer by myself it was that good. I also enjoyed the artichokes and the bread. People seemed to enjoy the mezzes and the salad, but I skipped those. For my main, I had the grilled Atlantic salmon with black rice, baby zucchini, pattypan squash & yogurt sauce. It was really excellent. Others at the table had the duck, the branzino, the flat iron steak, and the farmer's market vegetable terracotta. I think everyone enjoyed everything except maybe the vegetable terracotta (but my sister is very picky, so I'm not sure whether that was a reflection on the dish). Service was good. The restaurant was bustling, but I was able to converse across the large round table, so the noise wasn't too bad. I think the reason I didn't give five stars is that I missed some of my old favorite dishes. I always used to have the saganaki here, and it isn't on the menu anymore. None of the five mezzes appealed to me, which is unusual. I normally love hummus, but this time, the hummus was a variant that included crushed tomatoes, cilantro & baby green chickpeas. The restaurant is designed nicely and the service was very prompt, especially as I got there just before dinner. I didn't get any food and just had a few drinks. Unfortunately, I could not justify paying the prices for the small portions of food I saw online. This place ropes itself off as a special occasion place, which is fine, because $20 for a non-alcoholic drink is crazy! Beautiful, chic restaurant with a great vibe. Overall, I would rate it 3.5 stars. 3 of us came for a girls dinner and shared the mezze, the scallops app, chicken kebab entree, and lamb kebab entree. I had the indigo cocktail which was outstanding. The mezze was a hit, including the accompanied bread which was soft, warm, and well seasoned with herbs. The dips themselves were delicious, a good variety overall, and well portioned. I didn't try the scallops (allergies), but felt like both the lamb and chicken were wildly overpriced for what we received. The chicken had no flavor- it was actually kind of shocking. The lamb was better. We ended with two desserts, which were both excellent. Service was a bit all over the place. Pretty inattentive but nevertheless very friendly when they did come over. We were catching up so actually welcomed the slow service, but obviously this can be problematic for others. Also, we seemed to have 2 different servers that weren't communicating, which led to a few mishaps, but nothing crazy. It was also uncomfortably hot in there. Great spot for Mediterranean in NYC. Had I not come here with a bunch of vegetarians, I wouldn't have had a good fortune of enjoying their homemade falafel. Wow! Back on a Saturday night and everything was spot on. We were seated in the corner to the side of the bar which I didn't mind because the restaurant was so crowded. We opted to share all dishes which I recommend- portions and definitely shareable. We started with mezze which was fantastic- standouts for me were the smoked trout, spicy feta, and eggplant. For mains, we shared branzino, steak kebabs, duck schwarma, and lamb kofta. Each one was delicious, flavorful and perfect just depends what you are in the mood for. I would say the standout was the lamb kofta- it was probably one of the most tender lamb dishes I have ever had and it came with bread that was out of this world. We ended the meal with panna cotta which was good but not my favorite. Last time I was here I had the Silan, and I definitely prefer that desert. Came here for a birthday celebration and everything I ate was phenomenal! We started with all five mezze and the warm bread. There was nothing I didn't enjoy, but I especially loved the spicy feta. The beet hummus was also very unique. We also shared the tuna crudo (100/10), duck shawarma, steak skewers, and the lamb kofta terracotta. All of the dishes were amazing, with the tuna and duck being my favorite. For dessert, we tried almost everything on the menu. Every single item was amazing, but my favorite was the silan. The plum special with labneh ice cream was also phenomenal, but you can't go wrong with the rosewater panna cotta, chocolate tasting, or lemon cheesecake. Service was very attentive and they have abundant outdoor seating. Wheelchair access details: The table we were at was a little bit difficult to fit my wheelchair under her so I chose to transfer to a regular chair. We were at a round table, so in the future I would recommend asking for the square tables which are more wheelchair friendly. Came by with some friends for a late Friday dinner - we had reservations, which was good because it was extremely busy when we got there around 8pm. We ordered quite a bit to share - some highlights: - appetisers: smoked trout was surprisingly delicious - a bit smoky (duh) but not too heavy, paired wonderfully with the yummy flatbread. The octopus was fine but definitely a bit pricey for the portion size/quality. - mains: grilled NY strip steak kebab was my favourite -- the meat was really tender and flavourful, and I really liked salsa verde that it came seasoned with. Chicken kebab was also pretty good, although the side freekah was a bit dry/bland. We also had the branzino which was fine but nothing too spectacular. - dessert: we shared an order of the rosewater panna cotta. It certainly was rosewater(!) I liked the crispy kadaifi but otherwise it was honestly kind of forgettable. I wasn't a big fan of the ambience sadly - it's a bit dark, too loud to converse at a normal volume, and really quite cramped. The lady at the table next to us would pretty aggressively (and obliviously!) bump into our table every time she moved her chair. Overall, it was a decent meal at a pretty high price point. The fire-roasted eggplant was tasty, but a bit slimy. We enjoyed the hummus, which included flatbread. The heirloom cauliflower was delightfully crispy. The flash fried calamari was a good portion size and well prepared. To drink, I had the Smoking Fruit. It was more sweet than smoky, but it was nice and tangy from the passionfruit. They initially forgot to bring my entree. I ordered the farmers market vegetables terracotta. It was a fairly large portion size. It included mushrooms, potatoes, onions, and carrots, as well as a side of couscous. I enjoyed the tenderness of the veggies, but the tahini sauce was a bit too bitter. My family enjoyed the salmon, duck, and crab cakes. My mom said the branzino was a bit too salty. For dessert, we had the silan. This was a unique dish made from milk cream. It was nice on the inside in terms of the layout and decoration of the restaurant. The wait staff was also very attentive, but almost too attentive...We were kind of complaining that we felt like every five seconds they were coming around asking if we wanted another drink or trying to take away food that I had only eaten two bites from lmao like they kind of overdid it with how attentive they were being, and it didn't bother me too much, but it is something that I definitely noticed. Like I literally had a couple bites of my entree and he was asking if he should take it away, which is not gonna lie a pet peeve of mine. In terms of the taste of the food, it was OK to me. It wasn't bad, but it was definitely not as amazing as it looked. I literally came here because I wanted to order this lamb dish that I've included in my pictures and videos and it was good, but it just wasn't great. The lamb was in a sauce and the sauce to me was kind of watery. Overall this restaurant is quite pricey for what it is - I think you're largely paying for the size of the restaurant and the ambiance rather than the food itself. They provide a sampler of 'dips' called the 'selection of five' for 38, which includes a small portion of each option as well as a flatbread - there are maybe 5-6 pieces of bread total. Any additional bread is $5, and you will need additional bread unless you're putting an entire 'bowl' of dip onto each piece of bread. Additionally, there wasn't really any of these dips which were all that flavorful or amazing in any way (presumably this dip platter is the star of this restaurant). You can find a much better baba ghanoush at Akdeniz. For the main I had a dish with cubed steak, pearl onions, potatoes and blistered shishito peppers. The flavor of the shishitos barely came through and the steak was tough and chewy. All for around $45 I believe, the menu has since changed I think. They do offer a more affordable but likely equal quality happy hour menu from 5-7 but you'll have to sit exclusively at the bar to take advantage. read more
