    Side of calabrian carrots
    Celina C. N.

The food. ‍ Downtown Philly on a Friday night. Group of 5 visitors in town for a.large conference. Searching at 6:30pm, couldn't get a reservation earlier than 9pm anywhere! Snagged and 8;45 slot at Barbuzzo and walked over 45 minutes early just in case. And boom! Come on back, the host said! Molly our server was great--energetic, polite, patient. We all got the Stracotto, and there was a side of carrots. I love love a mixture of flavors, colors, and textures, so I didnt leave a single morsel of the polenta, veggies, gava beans, or short rib on the plate. The vibe is cool, but think more bar than restaurant. It's a long bar---the length of the narrow establishment--with a short menu. But did I say it was delicious? There is just one line of tables running the length of the room, across from the bar. We were seated at the largest one, adjacent to the kitchen door, elbow to elbow. But we got through it with full bellies, fully satisfied. (5 stars for my food)

Really wanted to love the pasta at Barbuzzo, but this one missed the mark for me. The paccheri with pork sugo came out looking great, but the pasta itself was rock hard not al dente, but actually hard and undercooked. It honestly felt like a can of chili dumped over pasta that never fully finished cooking, which was pretty disappointing given the restaurant's reputation. The highlight of the night was absolutely the salted caramel budino, which was insanely good, rich, creamy, perfectly balanced between sweet and salty, and easily the best thing we had. Even better, the staff kindly gave us one to take back to the hotel, which was a really nice touch and much appreciated. Service and atmosphere were great, but unfortunately the main dish just didn't deliver this time. Hoping it was just an off night.

We went in for an early dinner before catching a concert at the Academy of Music, a couple of blocks away. The internet lists this as Mediterranean, which is why I was so surprised the first smell to reach me upon entering was the smell of oven fired pizza. We were seated quickly and our server told us the food is served "family style with medium" portions. Despite this, we ordered as we would at any other restaurant and found it to be sufficient. We started with the stuffed meatballs which had a nice saucy flavor to them, with added peppers which gave them a mild kick. For our entrees we had lamb stuffed grape leaves, which were excellent and came with a healthy helping of chickpeas and tziki sauce on the side. We also had the stracotto which came with an incredibly tender short rib, a very well-paired accompaniment of vegetables, and cheese. I was on the verge of ordering a personal pizza as well, but was unfortunately full by that point. Next time we'll definitely be trying that and the dessert. There weren't many options for dessert, but after hearing folks raving about the salted caramel, I will definitely need to make a return visit.

Nice restaurant, if a bit cramped. Our waiter was knowledgeable about the entrees and made solid recommendations. The meatball appetizer came with just 1 piece of bread but we were able to request a second piece for our party of two. I got the grape leaves stuffed with ground lamb over chickpeas. Very flavorful and enough that I could share with my husband. He got a beef short rib with veggies, which was also enough to share, so we each got to try a bit of everything. Nice place, would like to come back to try their pizzas! Only thing that was slightly lacking was their dessert menu, but there are plenty of other options within a block to satisfy any sweet tooth.

Came back to Barbuzzo with a trainee after my initial visit on a Sunday evening 3 years ago. Pictured is the Calabrese Pie which he ordered and I ordered the Funghi which I thought I ordered on my first visit but learned it was another type of pizza. The Salad was the perfect size to share and both pizzas were solid. We actually sat at the long exhibition counter near the wood fired pizza oven. With two of the HH House wines the bill came to $73 without tip.

    Catered menu for large group

Excellent meal for a large (30) group at this popular Philadelphia spot. Barbuzzo offers a private upstairs room for large groups. It's a rectangular room, open kitchen at the back, bar to the right. Tables are grouped together towards the front. They provide a portable coat check, which is a nice touch on a very cold nite for everyone's bulky winter coat. For a large party a slimmed-down menu is available, albeit with plenty of choices. Appetizers are served family style, and diners choose from one of 4 entrees and 3 desserts. Appetizers are delicious. Standouts include whipped ricotta; wonderful ricotta cheese whipped fluffy and adorned with a drizzle of olive oil and sweet/tart vin cotto. Perfect to slather onto crusty grilled bread. Also, seared shrimp served with a melange of blistered multi-colored tomatoes as well as steak fry-sized bars of crispy polenta. All served tossed in a basil walnut pesto. And tennis ball-sized meatballs - a little spicy - crowned with luscious sweet tomato sauce, served atop creamy, soft polenta. Hard to decide which entree to try because they all sound wonderful. I tried branzino, one of my favorites. A filet is offered here (not the whole fish) which is a nice change from having to navigate the whole head-on fish thing. It's traditional prep done right - skin on, broiled crispy, seasoned and cooked perfectly with the flesh slightly sweet, firm and moist. Impolite to ask for a bite of others' plates at a business function but the feedback about the other entrees was consistent.... Food well presented, hot when served, well seasoned, moist and tender. And we can't forget dessert! I tried espresso tiramisu. Creamy fresh whipped marscapone tops moist espresso-soaked ladyfingers, then adorned with crunchy cocoa nibs. Delicious, and a sizable portion for dessert. Shout out to the service team. Not easy to serve a large group but this team managed with ease. Everyone was served quickly. Everyone got what they ordered and it was all piping hot and delicious. Bravo! Definitely a great experience. Recommended!

Great location, Easy to find. A low lighting relaxing atmosphere with metal chairs and benches for guests. I ordered the lamb stuffed grape leaves, it was okay for me. Our team also shared the mushroom Pizza, olives and whipped ricotta -- all really delicious!! The bread with the ricotta was amazing. The tiramisu, which I got to go, was great!

We held a department dinner event here and loved the food! They have a private upstairs dining room that we reserved. The beet and kale salad, ricotta, and meatballs were absolutely delicious from the starters. Shrimp was so so. I wasn't a huge fan of the bronzino either and wished I picked a different entree. The salted caramel budino was my favorite part of the whole dinner! Great service as well.

    House greyhound and beer

Service was a little slow, but it seems they didn't expect that kind of rush for a Saturday lunch. Tables are super small and cramped but you can't make do. I ordered a vodka based drink, the house greyhound, which was a little weak. Lunch menu is more limited than dinner. We ordered a beet and kale salad, with goat cheese, which was our favorite dish. The margherita pizza was slightly salty, but still good. Our pasta dish, the creste rigati was super salty. Good flavor maybe they need to adjust the amount of salt to balance the salt in the chicken sausage.

I recently had the opportunity to take the in-laws out for a meal in Philly. Was able to secure reservations for this establishment. The restaurant had a nice vibe and atmosphere. Love the rustic and hip feel when we walked in. Let's get into the dishes! Gnocchi, fennel pizza, and frites dish are amazingly delicious. Salad was also spot on. Drinks nailed it as well. They offer unique options for craft drinks. Normally, I'm not a gin person, but their current gin craft cocktail was quite refreshing. Summer vodka was also a delight to taste. When we finished the main dishes, dessert wrapped it all up and concluded the enjoyable meal and experience. Friendly and engaging staff members made the evening that much more fun and memorable. Older folks are usually harder to please, but they enjoyed the meal and experience. Great job with your drinks, dishes, and service! While we were only a party of 4, be great if we could secure a bigger group booking. But upon walking into the restaurant, I can see why it's a bit challenging to book a table for 14. Overall, you guys offer great food, service, and experience. Hope to visit this establishment again in the future. Cheers!

This was a pleasant surprise of flavors. Definitely not your typical mediterranean style restaurant has with Italian flare. It is a quant atmosphere booming with happy customers, staff and open kitchen that offered customers the view of their food being prepared. Our server Chris was excellent. He immediately greeted us, and proceeded to promptly take our order. After discussing what we were looking at, Chris gave us the seal of approval. The summer watermelon salad is light and refreshing as expected, but the explosion of flavors also came from the hazelnuts and mediterranean influenced seasonings. Next we had the burrata and speck...the highlight was the roasted peaches that took the burratas creamy texture and the speck's savory flavor and added some sweetness. The Tonnarelli Nero pasta dish was unique. Pasta from mushrooms (fantastic) and shrimp with a nice seasoning. Papas bravas was perfectly crispy with a wonderful not overpowering aïoli style sauce. Then we were really getting full, but had ordered the Spanish octopus which was very good, just a bit too saucy for me, but delicious and 2 margarita pizzas. We were able to eat some of the pizza which was cooked perfectly. I could have used just a touch more seasoning but overall very good

    Branzino

I'm still buzzing over the Salted Caramel Budino. It was a star of the meal. Close second to the branzino which was great with a fennel salad and Israeli cous cous. Service was excellent. My waitress knew what I wanted and gave great recommendations. Seating is very squishy. There's not a lot of room to maneuver. In fact, many patrons had to say, "Pardon me" to get in and out of their seat. Overall a great choice to eat in the heart of downtown Philadelphia. I would recommend avoiding busy hours so there is more room to move around.

Barbuzzo was my first stop when I came to Philly this summer. I was staying at the hotel down the street and wanted to enjoy a happy hour. I love this area. You have several restaurants lined up from each other serving great specials and outdoor dining. Something tells me this is the place to be this summer. The restaurant was packed for a Monday evening. I found seating at the bar. The bartender was telling me about the place and how they are busy all the time. Business here must be very good. I looked at the options for their happy hour menu and ordered the pizza with a glass of red sangria. I loved the margherita pizza. I don't claim to be a New York City pizza snob but this was really good. It comes with san marzano tomato, mozzarella, basil, extra virgin olive oil, and parmesan. I was talking to some people down the bar who also ordered the pizza and were similarly impressed. The sangria was delicious. You had good chunks of apple and citrus present. It was great for a warm day such as today. I needed a strong pick me up for my busy summer working in Philly and this was the perfect meal to start my week. Thank you Barbuzzo!

We ordered a number of things to share family style - - The Artichoke Francaise appetizer was something we'd never seen before on a menu, so we wanted to try. It was so good and I'm still trying to dupe it at home for my vegetarian hubs. - My husband is a eggplant parm connoisseur, so we also ordered their Eggplant 'Parmigiana' appetizer. He said it was good. - Ricotta Tortelloni was delicious and our favorite savory dish. The aged balsamic cuts through all the richness of the cheeses perfectly. It was so good! - To round off the meal, we ordered dessert and ordered the tiramisu. Glad we did because Giuseppe's & Son's has the BEST tiramisu that either of us has ever tasted. Ava was our waiter that evening. She was the best! When I mentioned my husband was vegetarian, she made sure to clear with him if certain ingredients in the dishes were ok with him. It's a big relief whenever that happens when we dine out. Plus, she was friendly and convivial. The tables at either side of us liked her too. That quality is important and adds to the overall experience for diners. Just had to shout out. Giuseppe's is hands-down a wonderful place and a gem. We also added the truffle pasta option for the table which was also prepared tableside with the cheese wheel and shavings of fresh black truffles was a perfect finish. We also had a sharing side of gnocchi with sauce. All in all we had a solid meal. It wasn't the best Italian I even had but it's good. The total was 336 for three with 2 rounds of drinks . Everything was as perfect as it could be why is that because this restaurants been doing it for over 126 years they know a thing or two their customers and had to prepare plate delicious meals. We have had the great fortune of dining here multiple times. What sets this particular establishment apart from other dining experiences we have had in Philly is their attention to...everything. From the flatware to the glasses to the greeting, service, and knowledge of their food...the dining journey you embark upon is unparalleled. When we arrived, our waiter, Eric, greeted us warmly. We have had the pleasure of meeting Eric on many occasions. Why is Eric so special? He knew our names. Remembered our conversations. Recommended items based on our previous dining habits. He provided interesting details about the products. Explained why and how dishes were created in the manner they chose, and frequently checked back to ensure our meal was as magical as we hoped. Chef Vetri came out to warmly greet us and thank us for returning. Maybe some would see that as a small gesture, but to us...it made us feel important and valued. For such a talented souls to take time to say hello, knowing how much it had meant to us on prior visits, underscores their attention to detail and service. It was appreciated beyond words. One of the hostesses, Diana, also made sure to check up on us. She asked questions based on prior conversations, she laughed and joked with us about life and home ownership. She sought out my wife to say hello when Rachel had stepped away for a moment. The exceptional steps the staff took to ensure our night was a step above others was clearly notable. We couldn't have been more appreciative of all of the efforts of the entire restaurant. We walked away feeling on top of the world...if only for a few short hours. The restaurant itself is such a warm, hospitable environment...how can you beat a rustic row home in Center City on a cozy Friday evening? The decor is inviting and familiar...like walking into a family's living room. It's quaint, it's beautiful, and it certainly pays homage to the heritage of the city. As for the food...that's the easiest part to review. There wasn't a misstep on our plates. From the oyster amuse bouche, with a horseradish crema that stayed in your chest just long enough to tell you hello but not hot enough to tell you it's a bad night, to the molten pistachio cake....the menu took us on a winter/spring journey a ride at Disney plant replicate. The gnocchi with black trumpet mushroom and smoked goat with polenta were my stars. Rachel loved the foie gras and wagyu. But really...what can beat the spinach gnocchi or the tortellini or the onion crepe or the....younger the point. The attention to detail, blending of flavors, and notes that accentuate one another is unrivaled in this city. Yes, it's that good. I can't thank the staff and Chef enough for providing us with a night we will not soon forget. Five stars was a no brainer. Simply the best place to eat in the city, hands

The place has beautiful ambiance. No music however there is a beautiful chandelier. The staff and…read moreservice were good but the food served Feb 2026 was delightful. The sommelier was able to help me find several wine glasses to pair with my meal. My party enjoyed each dish immensely but felt the hostess could use some training. She seemed unaware that it is federal law that the drinking age is over 21 and kept explaining that the normal carding policy was state law; very strange experience with host but overall delightful restaurant.
