Run don't walk. This place had the most perfect vibe for a quiet yet subtly upbeat dinner with my in-laws. To start with the food, which is why you're here, delicious does not do it enough justice. Among the three of us, we managed to go with three starters: grilled asparagus, market lettuce, House focaccia bread, and the most interesting Tuna dish I've ever had. I assume they adjust their menu frequently, so I hope when you're reading this I have not sold you on this Heaven when it has left us. But seriously I've had a lot of tuna dishes and in combination with being a huge Gin fan, this was ultimately one of the most memorable starters I've ever had. So yummy and the Negroni flavor really stands out. I know what you're probably thinking. Why would you have grilled asparagus as a starter? But listen with the mushrooms and the cream base it sat in, it was too flavorful to be your classic 'side dish'. It needed It's own moment. My husband finished his Paccheri faster than I could snap a picture, but he practically licked the plate. My man dish was the Mafaldine with lump crab - and seriously to die for. The pasta was cooked al dente and the flavor of the crab was complemented well with the crunchy saltine drizzled on top. We also had the seared scallops and I would say this is a lighter dish. So if you're super hungry treat that as an adjunct. Really liked the blushing cucumber cocktail! Our waitress was very familiar with and was so nice in showing us around the menu. Figulīna has mastered the chill yet vibrant energy a restaurant aims for. Pay for parking was available. Right next to the restaurant and Street parking is also an option. My husband and I had dinner at Figulina before a concert, and I'm so glad we experienced it together. We had a reservation and lucked into street parking directly outside, though paid lots and a garage are nearby. Inside, Figulina is eclectic and moody, with a warm, intimate energy. Our table gave us a view of much of the restaurant, including fresh pasta being made nearby. Our server was kind and knowledgeable. My husband ordered the Marchesi di Grésy Moscato d'Asti, while I chose the Heatwave, made with serrano mezcal, watermelon, Cocchi Rosa and lime. It was easily one of the best cocktails I've had in Raleigh. Smoky, slightly spicy and bright, with just enough watermelon to soften the mezcal without overpowering it. As a mezcal lover, I loved every sip. We started with the Whipped Ricotta, layered with watermelon, cantaloupe, shiso, pickled watermelon rind and pistachio, plus four slices of house focaccia. Creamy, fresh and slightly sweet, it was even better scooped onto the warm bread. For dinner, I ordered the Cappellacci with corn, chèvre, mushroom conserva, serrano and Pecorino Toscano. It was beautifully prepared, but sweeter than I expected, and the combination of the pasta and mushrooms wasn't quite for me. My husband absolutely loved his Grilled Pork Chop, served with corn soubise, field peas, fried okra, serrano vinaigrette and watermelon molasses agrodolce. A beautifully composed plate balancing sweet, savory, tangy and a little heat. The restaurant was clean and well maintained, and I loved watching the team work together. Service did slow toward the end, with longer waits for our server to return, but overall, Figulina made for a memorable pre-concert dinner. And that Heatwave? I'd return for it alone. read more

Food is mostly what could improve here. Nothing was bad, but mostly nothing was standout either. We ordered (table of 4) two apps, 4 pastas, and two mains along with 4 pieces of focaccia and everything was very mid. Overly pretentious in the descriptions, just trying too hard to "play with textures" or some other claim instead of just delivering good food. On my pasta "e pepe", the pepper sauce was actually really good, but just like a cheesy pepper sauce and not a huge portion so I am confused by the cost. Nearly $30 for some cream and cracked pepper and some pasta...Then our "main" or protein was lamb shoulder that was very much overcooked with a sort of shaved carrot salad on it with a bland vinegar based dressing. Same goes for the potatoes, they were missing salt, missing flavor, and were just set in a sort if slightly bland pesto cream sauce. At those prices, they should be ashamed. MUCH better places around to drop $100 a person for dinner and this after we both subsidize the their staff costs through tips (normal and expected) but also now subsidizing their business costs too (why am I paying your credit card fees?) Also the place is so hot...I can see your poor wall unit (s?) trying but failing to cool this place down. I would definitely never go back. It was fine, but just fine. Home made pasta doesn't make up for the rest of it. Over priced and mid is the best overall description. Drinks were very mid too. I usually would go 3/5 on a place like this but I found the amount of money I spent for what was delivered as frustrating. read more

Figulina is wonderful!  This is quite an Italian restaurant with a twist and a cool vibe. I came with my boss and other coworkers for our holiday dinner, and it was fantastic. The menu offers a variety of options of pasta dishes with a twist. I went for the Dopio Ravioli (collard green pesto, celeriac béchamel, ham broth and pecorino sardo). To drink l, I had a cocktail with mezcal. My team members also had the ravioli and other plates I can't remember. Everything was delicious!  The service was superb with professional and helpful attitudes. Common spaces were clean and comfortable and the restaurant was located in a central area easy to access and with a few street spaces and couple of paid parking lots nearby. Overall, it's a fantastic restaurant for a special occasion or if you simply like pasta with a delicious fusion. 100% recommended. read more

Absolutely incredible. My husband and I agreed that this was one of the top 3 Italian spots we've ever been to, and we LOVE high quality Italian food. Pasta is made in house and you can tell. Only slight downside is that it's tapas style so the plates are smaller than most Italian places but that was fine with us. The new menu launch at figulina is amazing!! The restaurant truly feels complete now with addition from their new fryer and grill. The service was impeccable, everyone was so friendly and accommodating and made sure we had the best experience. Mocktails were delicious as well. My husband, FIL and I came here on a Tuesday night for dinner. We were able to make a reservation a few hours beforehand which was really nice. We were seated immediately and our waiter was very nice. He made sure to keep refilling our water whenever we were running low which was great. My husband ordered the cappellacci, I ordered the squid ink Tajarin, and my FIL ordered the spaghetti. My husband and I absolutely enjoyed the cappellacci the most. I loved the texture of the pasta and the sauce was delicious. It was definitely our favorite. I liked my squid ink tajarin but wished there was more sauce to it. The ambiance of the restaurant was very nice and definitely a great place to come for a date night. Cold Friday nights in downtown Raleigh beg for the ambiance and food of Figulina! Chef David Ellis has placed this gem of a restaurant in reach of any Raleigh resident, and I hope everyone who supports local restaurants and their team makes a point of visiting Figulina this week & beyond. The building is charming in its own right with a covered patio and thoughtfully designed interior thanks to Sam Taylor, Chef's wife and an artist/illustrator. Sam has truly turned a warehouse space into a warm & inviting dining room that shares special treasures at every turn. Make certain you look up & around for her touches of the whimsical and modern. There is an open-view pasta room, bringing to life the care that goes into every dish. Guests are able to witness the handcrafted pasta being made that Chef David exclaims is a vessel for the flavors. We have found some lovely treats in the Provisions area on several visits as well. We even joined their (fairly new) Pasta & Provisions monthly club! It's been a fun experience to take home each month. The star of each dining experience is the excellent flavors being consistently put out of the kitchen. Recently the whipped ricotta starter featured roasted sweet potato with blood orange-chili agrodolce (simply put - an Italian sweet & sour sauce), popped red sorghum (a grain), and peanut chanm chanm (a crunchy snack topping!). Sounds unique? It is and is also off-the-charts delicious! The Tuna Crudo starter held its own as it was paired with Nashi pear, smoked tea vinegar, and puffed barley. This kitchen executes flavors & textures in true symphony! Our mains were so scrumptious, we are still talking about them. The Chicken Milanese and the Cappellacci were fabulous and flavors literally jumped off the plates. Any pasta dish at Figulina will leave you wanting more, and the Gorgonzola in Friday night's dish was unctuous when paired with the prune mostarda, walnut sauce & fried rosemary. Our server was Trudy, and she took the dining experience to a new level of fun and efficiency. Her humor is infectious and her way of caring for guests with a genuine passion for hospitality makes you feel as if you are dining at a friend's home. Thank you Trudy for serving guests with such warmth. We will be returning soon to enjoy the extensive beverage program that is inspired by the Italian Aperitivo culture. Spent $900 for a nice family dinner, and they still refused to add chicken to my pasta. So I literally ordered a whole chicken, cut it, and placed it on the pasta myself right there at the table. UPDATE: I've visited Figulina a couple of times since the initial visit I reviewed and each time, I still have enjoyed my meals. Last year included a very good Mafaldine Carbonara with country ham (those that know me know I love me some real true carbonara). This most recent time, I went with friends and we enjoyed a lot of selections for our meal. We started off with marinated olives and focaccia bread that we got extra virgin olive oil to enjoy with it. Both were nice starters, fresh and excellent. Sharing the tuna carpaccio next, we were pleasantly surprised by the taste on this one as each component gave a light and refreshing finish. For my main course I went with the Chicken Milanese served with a complementing vin jaune sauce. Combined with the Parisian gnocchi, lion's mane, and baby frisée, it made for a delicious meal. Of note, the chicken stayed very crispy while not being over done. I'd definitely get this one again, although I would like to try the Cacio e Pepe Tonnarelli pasta selection as well on another visit. There was a bit of activity in the pasta making area but not a lot, I had hoped my friends could see a lot more in action. Our server was attentive and informative but one observation is that our main meal choices did take a bit longer than anticipated (but definitely worth the wait). We had a great Mother's Day Brunch at Figulina last Sunday. The food, drinks and service were great. I got the Scotch Egg which I haven't had in years. It was fried perfectly and it was atop a small pickled salad. It was delicious. We split a bunch of appetizers such as the Avocado Smash and two orders of the scones. All were really good. My son and I got BLT's. The bacon was crisp and the sandwich bread was awesome. My wife got the Paccieri as did her sister. Both said the pasta was homemade and fresh. I can't remember the pasta dishes my mother in law and brother in law ordered but both said their food was spot on. The ambiance was really nice too and they have outdoor seating. read more

I was so excited to try Figulina, but I left incredibly disappointed. The location and atmosphere are delightful, but that's where the positives ended for us. We started with the aperitivo board, which had surprisingly little on it. We also ordered the focaccia, and it was excellent. The menu itself was difficult to navigate because the descriptions were so over the top. We also realized there were no tomato-based pasta sauces on the menu. I know the menu changes weekly, so maybe that was just the week we visited, but it was still disappointing. The pasta portions were very small, especially considering the price. My dish came with about 8 homemade noodles that were slightly gummy in a cream sauce. When I asked our server for pepper, they looked genuinely horrified. They explained that the chef seasons every dish, so they don't keep salt or pepper on the tables. They weren't even sure if they had any. Eventually, they brought out a small bowl of ground pepper. After I asked for pepper, the service noticeably changed. Our server barely checked on us for the rest of the meal and seemed eager to get us out the door as quickly as possible. Five hundred dollars later, we left still hungry, very unimpressed, and laughing about how dramatically our server's attitude changed. For us, Figulina felt like a lot of hype that didn't live up to the experience. I love good food, and don't mind the price tag as long as it's worth it. For me, the service and food fell short. Farm to Table Italian cuisine with Southern Twist, with the perfect combination of ingredients and Flavors I had the opportunity to dine at Figulina in Raleigh, NC, which offers freshly made pasta with strong Italian influences, bringing in new flavors, ingredients, and spices. The overall restaurant created an atmosphere that catered to a variety of patrons, including couples/dates, families, business colleagues, and small to large groups, with an equally spacious outside patio. The service was also a step above the rest, with curated descriptions of all the cuisines and attention to detail. They surely made the night one to remember and a reason to come back. Having traveled the globe to over 69 countries, including spending an extensive period in Italy, what really impressed me was how they took very Italian-inspired dishes but made them more elaborate and exciting for a one-of-a-kind tasting experience. We started with some appetizers and small plates, which included #1 Stuffed dates with Gorgonzola Dolce, Medjool dates, hazelnuts, hot honey, #2 Whipped ricotta with roasted muscadine, prosciutto, pickled celery, farro piccolo, and verjus, and #3 House Focaccia. The Stuff Dates was a combination of the deep sweetness of the dates, soft creaminess, and flavor from the gorgonzola, complemented by the crunchy hazelnut, and the sweetness of the honey, which produced an amazing one-bite, flavorful experience. The Whipped Ricotta goes beyond sophisticated with its rich ricotta at the bottom, farro for texture and traction, roasted muscadines that burst like little pockets of jam, and prosciutto bits for a slight salty-sweet flavor, leaving you with the desire for more. Finally, the focaccia wasn't really groundbreaking. In fact, I have had much better focaccia in other places - it wasn't exactly worth eating as it just fills up your stomach unnecessarily. We followed up with 3 entrees: #1 Rigatoni with red wine-braised eggplant, capers, oyster mushroom, and bottarga crumb, #2 Triangoli with braised guinea hen, sweet pepper tagine, charred okra, goat lady chèvre, preserved lemon, toasted pistachio, and #3 Mafaldine alla carbonara with guanciale and pecorino romano. The Rigatoni was an intricate pasta dish with a red wine braise that softened the eggplant to a silky, confit consistency, featuring subtle tannic complexity, capers that brought flashes of saltiness, and oyster mushrooms that introduced a satiny, woody texture that played off the eggplant. The bottarga crumb is the coup de grâce: sea salt salinity and sandy crunch that sticks to rigatoni ridges, salting each bite. The Triangoli was an excellent blend of Mediterranean and North African flavors, with the triangoli laminated and cooked just past al dente to accommodate the tangy chèvre's tanginess and creaminess inside. The guinea hen provides a juicy, savory, and spiced flavor profile, while the sweet pepper tagine adds warmth and sweetness. The charred okra brings smokiness and a faint grassy note, and the accompaniment of preserved lemon provides the perfect combination of sweet, savory, and citrus. There was a minor execution issue with the dish. It was too spicy. Unfortunately, when using fresh ingredients from local farms, there are always challenges in what you will receive. They believe that the peppers may have added too much spice to the dish, which made it a little overpowering. While the Mafaldine alla carbonara was a perfected classic, with the silkiness of the fresh pasta, the emulsion of the egg, and the pecorino romano, it also brought a feeling of refreshment with each rich bite. I found the dish to be a little lackluster in terms of complexity. I feel that this dish could have added dimension to make it more interesting with some different garnishes or added flavor elements, such as caramelized onions, wild mushrooms, peas, or even more impactful pancetta, which could elevate this dish to the next level. Overall, I would absolutely recommend this restaurant to anyone without reservations. The way this restaurant adds uniqueness to its flavor and ingredient selection truly creates an experience that is beyond typical Italian-inspired restaurant cuisine. read more

Would Italian music not be more appropriate to set the mood or anything other than doo-op. Silver placed directly on table without a napkin is cringe. A pricey but delightful experience. We popped into Figurine on a bit of a random Wednesday afternoon and snagged seats at the bar. As a disclaimer, this was the second time we'd eaten here, but the first time for dinner. We started with cocktails including the Bordiga Vermouth di Torino Rosso from their Vermouth as well as the priced bread service. We asked the bartender--who what exceptional!-- for entree recommendations and he explained everything to help steer us toward what matched what we were looking for. Their menu rotates seasonally but the entrees we enjoyed were the Doppio Ravioli (filled with collar green pesto in one portion and celery root béchamel in the other) and the Tajarin (potted shrimp, jumbo lump crab, tomato-crab fat bisque and a seafood foam). The dishes were OUTSTANDING! Our food got cold because we spent so much time talking about how rich and vibrant the labors were, and how it was all so well balanced. It was also all filling, which made the pricing a *bit* more understandable ($33-$36). Needless to say, out plates were wiped clean! We opted out of dessert but did order after-dinner drinks: Montenegro and Limoncello. Overall, it was a night of excellent food and beverages and service. Fishy + Whipped ricotta - awesome, loved the prosciutto + Heirloom tomato - great, but comically tiny portion + Market lettuces - perfect + Off-menu foccacia - perfect + Rigatoni - loved this, the eggplant was amazing + Mafaldine - perfect + Bucatini - good + Scarpinocc - good + Watermelon tart - ok. Kind of like watermelon jello with a crust, not my cup of tea + Chocolate stout cake - perfect So yeah, some dishes were misses, but overall I really liked our meal here. Vibe inside was nice and casual and they have a little store that's fun to browse. Will also note there is a slightly musty smell when you walk in the dining room, but it's not really noticeable once you're there for a bit. Humble Pie had it too, so I'm guessing it's a quirk of the building, but I wanted to mention it in case anyone is sensitive to that kind of thing. 4.5 stars. read more

I love pasta, and I wanted to try this new restaurant out. I made a reservation for 2 on a Wednesday night. The inside is nothing notable, and there aren't a lot of tables, especially large ones if you have a big group. It is neat to see them rolling out fresh pasta dough. The main problem I had was the giant fan above our table making it quite cold. It was also somewhat loud. I ordered the tagliatelle which was very good, albeit small for $25. The menu is also quite small. Our waiter barely said a word the whole evening. While I enjoyed my pasta, I would rather go to Gravy where I can get free garlic knots and a much larger portion of food that is just as good. read more

Excellent service, beautiful atmosphere. My cocktail was fabulous -- I ordered the "Sugar, we're going down ". I'm gluten free so what I could order was extremely limited. I ordered the Brussels Caesar and Whipped Ricotta with carrots which was fabulous. Other members of the party had fun, unique but small pasta dishes. $5 for ONE piece of focaccia. Overall a fun birthday dinner out but not someplace I would frequent. read more

This Italian spot is one to try. The pastas were delicious, very flavorful. The menu is relatively small but the options are good. We sat at the bar and the bar tender was our waiter. Went here for the first time last night and it was fantastic. The waitress was very attentive and was able to provide solid recommendations that we agreed with after trying them, too! The cocktails were fun but they also offer an extensive wine menu, by the bottle or some by the glass. Great serving sizes with enough to share. The brussel sprouts salad was huge and we had plenty to share among four people. We also shared the whipped ricotta dip. We each tried a different pasta and they were fabulous, my favorite were between the squid ink pasta and the Gorgonzola pasta. Can't wait to come back! I think this is one of the most underrated restaurants in downtown Raleigh. Great cocktails, the seasonal pastas are always amazing and the staff is very friendly and attentive. read more
