The atmosphere is cozy & intimate, and the place had nice buzz at lunch time on a drizzly Sunday. We were greeted quickly and courteously and given a table right away. Our initial drink orders were taken and served quickly. The menu is simple but has something for just about everyone, although not necessarily for kids. The service throughout the rest of the lunch service was a bit on the slow and not particularly attentive, or I would have given Barkeaters five stars because the food is absolutely delicious and fresh. I had the smoked salmon flatbread, and my husband had the fish & chips. We both had a cup of mushroom bisque (soup of the day). While we chose the place on a whim (i.e. It was Sunday, the place was open, and we were hungry.), we were pleasantly surprised and would return here in a heartbeat. read more

Sunday afternoon...1:30..it looked like they were closed. Walked in and there were some sort of employees lounged at the bar. The place was very dark and uninviting. It felt like walking into a smokers den in the late 70's. Thankfully they had a patio to get some light. I had to ask if they were open for business, as it seemed shocking that people actually walked in. Food took a little bit longer than usual to come out since there were only 4 other patrons there. the wait staff was fine, not exactly attentive, but they took orders and delivered. This place is cozy and very reasonably priced. I ordered the chicken quasadilla. It came with a side salad. The quesadilla was suppose to have green peppers in but but instead had scallions. It was good bit seemed to have been fried rather than grilled. Overall still very good. The turkey club was huge. It came with homemade chips. The ceasar salad was a good portion. We were given a gift card to Barkeaters. It's about an hour's drive for us, so we'd held off going. With college now out and my husband on vacation, we opted to go last night. It was a mix of good and bad, but honestly I doubt we'll go again. Better Make Reservations We arrived at 5 p.m. The hostess immediately asked if we had a reservation, which we didn't. We didn't really know that reservations were required, especially at 5 p.m. on a weeknight. After an uncomfortable 30-second period of her looking over the seating chart, she said she'd give us a table that was reserved if we agreed to eat in a hurry as the reservation was for 7 p.m. A full two hours away! We ate, paid and left with two other tables never filled in the 40 minutes we were there. We could have been out faster had our waitress not forget to bring the second beer my husband ordered and then remembered it right before bringing the bill. If you go, I highly recommend making reservations, as it seems they prefer that. Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down for Food We started with the Mushroom Fries. The mushroom and coating was incredible. The mango aioli served with them tasted a bit like frosting, so we didn't really enjoy that, but it didn't matter. Those mushrooms alone were full of flavor and worth every penny. Next up were the meals. The grilled chicken sandwich. The chicken was charred to the point it was dry and not that appetizing to my daughter, so she ate it, but wasn't impressed. My husband's burger on the other hand was something he said rated as one of the best burgers he's had. My son had the Lemon & Garlic Roasted Chicken, and while the chicken was tasty, we really wish they'd said they serve the risotto on a bed of field greens. Like me, he's allergic to lettuce, so he wasn't really able to eat much of the risotto. Finally, I had the Baked Haddock, one of the more expensive items on the menu. For $26, I got a square of haddock that was a three-inch square. It's topped with crab and lobster, but after getting two pieces of shell, I was a little disappointed. You also get five asparagus spears (cooked to perfection) and about a 3/4-cup serving of rice pilaf that was too salty for my taste. I regretted ordering it. When they bring the check, you do get some dark chocolate bark that was also really good. Value Is My Sticking Point In the end, the value was the sticking point, especially for the haddock. It simply wasn't worth the $26. Added to the uncomfortable situation where we were told to eat in a hurry because of a reservation two hours from when we entered the restaurant, it's just not a positive experience that makes me want to return. read more

This place got great reviews but what a disappointment. The steak and cheese flatbread was a odd shape pizza with no steak on it . Flatbread should be thin crust not what they serve. My burger was cooked wrong with a weird egg on it . I would not recommend. read more

Well it turns out we were there on Prom Night. The place was packed with eager teenagers. The noise was overwhelming. But the staff were awesome. They found us a quiet place out on the patio. At dusk, when the Prom-goes left for the dance and the mosquitos invaded the patio, the staff came to our rescue and smoothly moves us inside. The burgers were awesome. Puts ANY burger chain to shame. Great to have local micro-brew beers on tap. Kudos to the chef and staff. read more

One of our two entrees was missing from our takeout order. We did not discover this until we arrived at our lodging. We have placed repeated orders to Barkeaters for the last hour, but Barkeaters does not bother to answer the phone. I'm very surprised by some of the negative ratings--Barkeater's is a really nice place to eat with great food. I've eaten here many times and have always had a good experience. The food and service are consistently top-notch. The atmosphere is cozy and warm--check out the ceiling too--beautiful detail! Everyone here has always been friendly and welcoming. During summer months the patio is a great place for a nice dinner. The food is consistently delicious. I've tried many of the menu items and have never been anything but extremely satisfied. The Wedge Salad and Filet Mignon are my personal favorites. My most recent visit was for my brother's birthday, and everything was perfect! The portions were large and the quality was excellent! Our waitress was incredible--she went out of her way to ensure a great experience. Visiting Burlington after having lived there for 30+ years and were looking for a quick place to have something to eat after flying in. This is a nice casual restaurant. Can't give it a thorough review since it was a quickly and everyone had the fish and chips. It was a nice serving of fried haddock with piping hot fries. One friend substituted the sweet potato fries. Fish had a light crispy crust on the outside and was tender on the inside. I started with the soup of the day. It was chili. The small bowl was more than adequate for $5 and it was probably the best chili I've had in a restaurant. It was loaded with good stuff. They should make it a regular menu item. My husband and I checked out this restaurant as it was super close to the bed and breakfast that we were staying. The decor is cozy, something I would describe as "cabin chic" think lots of wood, plaid and etc. However the menu is very varied. I got the asian noodle salad, which was delicious and my husband got the bark burger. Both were great and we finished both items. Afterwards we split a molten chocolate cake with ice cream (also very good, rich but not too sweet). The service was also on point, not too intrusive but someone always filled our water glasses and checked in on us. All in all a really great restaurant. read more

The mushroom fries were incredible and full of flavor, the beet and chevre salad was the best I've ever had, and the seared tuna was good (although a little too cooked for my liking). Do not go to this establishment if you are not a regular. Or even a local. We're vacationing in Burlington and while we have our favorite eateries, we were eager to try something new. After reviewing local restaurants on Yelp we decided to give Barkeaters a try...especially because today is Wednesday - local beer and burger night - a local beer (Fiddlehead IPA - Yes, please!) and delicious local meat burger for $10.(!?!) We walked in. We were not greeted with a Hello or even a smile. But, "Do you have a reservation?" We told the hostess that we did not and did not realize we should have a made a reservation as we're from out of state and this was our first time dining there. "Can you be out in a hour? We have several reservations at 7p." My husband and I looked at each other and our two young children, "We can try?" The hostess ended up being our server who was extremely impatient and ended up being extremely rude. We were argued with about ketchup (who argues that a half a teaspoon should be enough for your burger and fries, and why would a child need ketchup for a burger?!) to a quarter-size amount of carmalized onions on a burger is satisfactory. I had to chase her down just to get a word in with her. Once we completely lost our appetites she proceeded to argue with us, justifying her outrageous and unjust behavior. The entire experience was appalling. We stayed for the sake of our children. Had they not been with us we would have simply walked out. Truly a disappointment. Save your time, energy, and appetite for a more satisfying experience elsewhere. Our night is ruined. What a terrible shame. read more

The lunch special was a pastrami sandwich on a pretzel bun with spinach and other amazing things I can't remember and came with wonderfully crispy sweet potato fries. The five stars are based upon the relaxed atmosphere and desserts (I cannot speak for the entrees, etc.). My friend and I stopped by The Bearded Frog for dessert and a glass of wine, but she didn't like the dessert options and I didn't care for the inattentive high school student/host. So, we opted to try Barkeaters and we were pleasantly surprised. The bartender was very charming and pleasant and the coconut cream and chocolate cream pies (reportedly made by a "Mona" in Vergennes) were heavenly. It seems like a great place for a casual and relaxed dining experience or, better yet, a cold beer on the deck after work. I'll be back in a few weeks when I visit Burlington again! read more

Unfortunately, the worst service experience we have had in a long time. We had come in for Sunday brunch and were in no hurry but the complete lack of attentiveness by the staff took it to an extreme. We placed our orders within a few minutes of arriving along with coffee orders. Coffee came but had to ask for sugar. Server leaves but we have no utensils to stir coffee. Thinking maybe she had gone to get utensils, we waited until finally after 10 minutes tried make eye contact and flag down another server to get a spoon. It took 25 minutes for the salad we ordered to be served and after 35 minutes still no entrees or a server even acknowledging the table to refill water or coffee. No comment about the wait for the food was offered by the server nor any offer of "can I get your anything else"; it was plunk down the plate and walk away. We have never done this before but finally flagged down the other server (because again they would walk by without making any eye contact or checking the table) and asked to cancel the rest of our order and get a check. Waited another 5 minutes for the check and finally went inside to get it where the young lady we had originally asked told us she wasn't our server and we would have to wait! Neither server asked if there was a problem, how can we help. Nothing. Between the two of us, we have a cumulative of 20+ years in the restaurant and hospitality industry. We completely understand bad days,the kitchen gets in the weeds, a server call out for their shift, etc. and can forgive quite a bit that others may not. What made this a terrible experience was the complete lack of acknowledgement or training (?) by the two young ladies who were serving. You can get a lot of mileage out of a 20 second table touch and asking your customers how they are doing, refilling drinks and generally taking an interest in your tables. They obviously don't get this concept. This is my first negative review, ever, but it was so bad I couldn't let this pass. I hope the ownership takes it to heart and provides training to the staff on how to handle issues. I can't comment on the food as we didn't even get that far beyond a basic Caesar salad. read more

Barkeaters was a nice surprise. I was a little hesitant after walking in and seeing a semi-empty restaurant but I quickly warmed up to the quiet and cozy atmosphere. The veggie egg rolls were an excellent appetizer and was the best part of the meal. The chicken statler was straight forward and to the point and the vegetables on the side were cooked perfectly. I had black bean quinoa Burger that was OK but my girl friend had a chicken sandwich that was rock hard and terrible. I have had better chicken sandwiches from fast food places. Service was slow and poor. We came in about 1 pm and the wait staff did not seem interested in helping us at all. We were in a hurry to catch the ferry to NY, and the staff and bartender were extremely accommodating. They were so fast that we were able to stay and have drinks. The bartender took great care of us and gave us generously-poured beer samples to help us choose what we wanted. The chicken sandwich was huge and earned these five stars. Bad Attitude! We had just seen a movie and a friend called and asked us to join them. We arrived at 8:50 pm and our friends had already ordered but we pulled up chairs and nobody came to the table. I went to the bar and asked if we could order and they said the kitchen was closed at 9:00. It was 9:02. They literally walked away from me after I asked??
