I brought my mother there for Mother's Day. It wasn't overly busy and the food took over 40 minutes to arrive at our table. Others who showed up and ordered after us had their food and were finished by the time we received our food. Within that 40 minute period we were never offered more coffee or water. The waitress was so unfriendly! When the food arrived it was cold and my top pancake was as hard as a rock. Out of the three mothers that were at the table, two were offered a flower. The hostess asked if everything was okay and when she wasn't given an answer by any of us, she said ok...okay good. It was horrible. The whole experience was horrible. The food and the staff. Skip it! Ordered a medium rare burger, was served a well done burger. I sent it back. No apologies or acknowledgement that the kitchen had made a mistake. The second burger was well done too. I LOVE this place. I own a small business as well and can say that customer service is by far what makes the experience... This place definitely had it! My sister and I stopped in last night because Cucina Antica was closed. We had never been here before, so we decided to try it out. The service was EXCEPTIONAL, I think it was the owner who served us?? The food was SO tasty! We had a mushroom ravioli and red wine, it was amazing. Barkeaters wasn't terrible but it sure wasn't great, either. Service was friendly, but slow (to be fair, it looked like there might've been one waitress for the whole place the night we were there). The duck chili tasted mostly of tomato sauce, quite disappointing. Cobb salad was fine, but the lettuce was literally whole lettuce leaves, and not small leaves either. Way too large to eat, we had to chop them ourselves before the salad was edible. Mussels were good (nice sauce), as were the fries. Steak was overcooked and unevenly cooked. Nothing was actually bad, but it was overpriced for the quantity and quality. read more

Thoroughly enjoyed our experience! We called for a reservation on a Saturday night, which we could have gotten if we wanted to wait until later. We opted to take a high top table because we were early enough. The woodsy decor is not overdone. I loved the cute framed "Advice" on the walls. Dinner was a little bit of a wait so we had time to read the ones that were close enough. My specialty cocktail was delicious! I had the grilled salmon with lemon butter, grilled asparagus, grilled watermelon wedges with cucumber, feta and watermelon couscous salad. Soooo good! No room for dessert. My companion had the lemon and herb chicken with fingerling potatoes which he also enjoyed. Our friendly server brought us two pieces of chocolate "bark" with our bill. Barkeaters is a wonderful choice! I eat here at least once a week for their best-in-class mussels & a creative cocktail or great glass of house wine (in two pour sizes!). While I usually post up at the bar by myself to chat with the superb bartender and scarf down the mussels or soup, sometimes I invite friends and they have never been disappointed. Their steak is always cooked beautifully to their taste, the seafood entrees are exciting and balanced, highly varied and really well executed sauces for all the dishes... And, the appetizer menu always has at least one dangerously tempting fried item--recently, Smoked Cheddar Fritters with Shelburne Farms cheddar--which will blow your mind. Do it. read more

Went here after the family toured the Shelburne Museum yesterday. Waited 30 minutes (as is the norm for everyplace up here), but it was well worth it: a moist & tasty Asian-flavored turkey burger for me, and a beet & cheese salad for the wife, and a yummy burger and chorizo-black bean soup & fries for the kids. I have only been here for lunch, but I will continue to go back. I have been with my husband, with my family, and with an extended group - all for lunch - and every time is excellent! It is small, but the menu is wonderful - whether you're ordering fish & chips, a burger, mac & cheese for the kids, chili/soup/salad or a special I have yet to be let down by this restaurant. It is charming, lovely, tasty, and a favorite when we're in the area. No matter what you order, get fries/chips - they are AMAZING. I don't tend to eat "sides" but I eat every piece here...including sweet potato fries. read more

This place is right down the road from my house and I was hungry and by myself on a Thursday rainy night. the parking lot was full when I got there early around 5:30. I was surprised. The bar area was full of folks talking and drinking. Guess it is the place in Shelburne to go after work. The hostess was pleasant and sat me at perhaps the worst table for a single person in the restaurant. The table was the only table in the middle for the walkway to the kitchen. There was another 2 top near the windows and I asked if I could sit there and she said no it was reserved. That may have been true but it was still empty when I left an hour later. Just saying. My table was also wobbly and although 2 people tried to fix it we had no luck. I just made sure to keep my food on one of the legs to keep the wobbling to a minimum. I ordered the Queen City Porter and it took quite a while for it to come as the bartender was talking with a friend at another table but the beer was good and I liked the tall glass. While i was waiting I watched the other folks in the restaurant and especially two very cute little boys who were there with their mom and perhaps grandmother. I did have to wonder about people who let their kids play on a carpet in a restaurant. Yuck do they really think it is clean. Again Yuck. As I was alone I took out my phone and checked for wifi and saw they had two locked accounts. I asked the waitress if i could have the code and she said we don't give the code out. Hmmm in this day and age not to share the wifi code. I can't understand that as it doesn't cost any more to allow the customers to use the wifi in this day. Oh well. I ordered the Steak Frites and asked for it medium rare. When it came it was a large cut of perfectly done meat sitting on perfectly fried french fries. It came with a horseradish sauce and catsup. The sauce could have been a tad more spicy with more horseradish but everything else was very good. Except for the table seating and the wifi issue I had a good meal and will be back. read more

We had a disappointing dinner here a couple of years ago, and hadn't gone back until today to try lunch. It was half empty when we were seated, no one took our order for 20 minutes - by the time we got our food we'd been there an hour. A party of 6 at the next table arrived after we ordered and got their food before we did. The Carne Asada tacos had one sad little strip of flank steak and about a tablespoon of toppings and a cardboard texture tortilla from being heated then sitting. The tacos and the fries were stone cold. The Cobb Salad was unremarkable. Service was poor. I asked for a box for the rest of my salad - the server took it, 10 minutes later it was still in the kitchen so we left without it. read more

Super friendly & attentive waitress - nice atmosphere & the food is 1st rate. Stopped for a Sunday lunch & had a wonderful bowl of sreamed mussels. My companions had fish'n'chips, fish taco & chicken sandwich respectively which was followed by a gorgeous homemade dessert - a cake with mascapone cheese & raspberry filling were all excellent. read more

My young daughter and I had an event to attend in Shelburne, so I quickly looked up some places and Barkeaters seemed like a place we would like after a long drive from the Boston area. We arrived just before 6 pm on a Friday, I thought it was early enough we could have a bite without too long a wait. As we walked it it smelled delicious and even my daughter said it smelled yummy. I glanced around and there were at least three empty four top tables and from my vantage point one empty table for two. As we walked to the hostess she. Looked at my five year old with a look that made you think we brought a skunk in with us. I said dinner for two and she pursed her mouth and made a huge show of looking at the paper in front of her, frowning, sighing and she then said "I have reservations for people at seven you wont have time to eat if I seat you" I looked at the empty tables and back at the hostess and it was clear she had no intention of letting us eat there. I thanked her and left, but something bothered me until I logged into YELP and re-read the reviews and saw a family with a similar experience including the "you cant eat in an hour" remark. I get that not everyone likes children, but my daughter was far from a baby and has been taught how to behave in restuarants. She has eaten in much fancier places all over New England and has never once misbehaved or disturbed other patrons. If this establishment doesnt want families to eat there then it should just say that and be polite about it. We found somewhere else to eat, but if you have a family I would avoid the hassle of even trying to eat here. read more

The hostess/waitress was SO RUDE. As soon as I walked in she addressed me and said "We're not serving dinner." What she should've said was something on the lines of "we're not serving dinner yet, but we have a bar menu available" We wanted to sit outside and her annoyance at our request was very obvious. She was annoyed at the request, even though they were offering outside seating. Before we even ordered we wanted to leave and we should've in retrospect. This is the poorest service I have ever had at a restaurant. I asked for a cup of coffee, with my meal, the waitress said the coffee was 4 hours old, I asked her If she could brew some fresh coffee, she replied that it was a full pot and she couldn't throw it out. When I persisted she said I would have to pay for the entire pot, then she still wouldn't brew fresh coffee. When I asked to speak to the manager, she refused and walked off. My wife and I were biking from Middleury to Burlington. After this display of bad manners we got on our bicycles and left, without eating. Avoid this poor excuse for a restaurant. read more

I was extremely pleased with the meal - Saturday lunch - I had at Barkeaters with my mother and sister. The staff was friendly, the atmosphere relaxed, and the food was great! We did get the table by the kitchen, and the service was just a tad slow, or else this would have been a five-star review. Let me just say: the food is EXCELLENT! I had what I expected would be a rather predictable BLT - let me tell you, when you put applewood smoked Vermont bacon on that sandwich as the "B", add fresh, locally grown lettuce and tomatoes and some magical mayo - well, it is anything but predictable. The house-made potato chips are great. I also sampled the mussels - fabulous, just the right amount of garlic and white wine - and the out of this world eggplant flatbread pizza. That last dish comes with an exquisite side salad. My son wants me to mention that he loved the side of fries we brought home for him. It's good to go with family. :-) The price is right, the ingredients are as fresh as they can be, and the staff is super friendly. This restaurant is a little off the beaten path which is why I want to say - go out of your way to eat at Barkeaters. It's well worth a visit. read more

My wife had the beet salad and the maple cider dressing was liquid gold. I had the turkey and ham club with cranberry mayo. It was another home run. My Husband and I went to Barkeaters for our first date night out after having our baby boy. We made reservations during restaurant week. We were running a couple of minutes late so I called to make sure it would be ok, and was met with "We have your table booked again at 7:30). What?! First of all, I worked in the restaurant business, so I understand turnover. You would NEVER tell that to a customer. So we booked it over there and ended up being only 5 minutes late. Despite the blatant rudeness, we were looking forward to our meal. The beet salad was fine, but the portion quite small. My husband had the Steak Frites, and asked for medium well - it came out like a hockey puck. To their credit, they rectified it and also gave him a complimentary glass of wine. I had the lobster fettuccine. Although the fettuccine was cooked perfectly, the lemon in the cream sauce was so over-powering it was hard to enjoy the lobster! Best part of the meal? Our Server, Mary Rose was spot on and made the evening really enjoyable! Second best part? The desert - the molten lava chocolate was divine.... As was the complimentary "bark" at the end. All in all, not a bad night, but not exactly what we were hoping for either. read more

It's a comfortable place with a great selection of local craft beers. I had the salmon flatbread which came with a perfect little salad with maple cider dressing that was amazing. The guys had burgers that were "ok" but that had a mismatch as far as what toppings they ordered & neither was right. Sweet potato fries were forgotten initially but that was quickly fixed. Four of us went for dinner tonight with a reservation and we seated right away even though we were early. Our table was between the bathrooms and the kitchen door and we asked to be moved as the restaurant had several tables available. Staff accommodated our request with no problem. Ordered gin and tonic and sent drinks back because tonic was flat. Again, staff took care of this with no issue. Ordered burger, haddock, plank cooked salmon and the ravioli dish. All in our party were pleased with the food, the pasta was cooked perfectly and the haddock was excellent. Burger was good and fried egg a nice extra. Restaurant has a nice decor, is quiet enough so that conversation can take place and the "bark" served at the end of the meal a nice surprise. Would go back. read more

Maybe it's not a fair comparison but we miss Sause which formerly was at this location. Good improvements in the decor; this space has a new and better appearance. However my wife and I were bolth somewhat disappointed by our entrees. Chocolates at the end of the meal were a nice touch. read more
