This is my favorite breakfast spot when shopping on Mass. The coffee is expertly crafted and the pastries are out of this world. I have never ordered anything else off the menu because the two are already so perfectly paired and easy to eat on the go as I stroll through neighboring shops. So I loved everything about 1900 Barker on Mass. Full disclosure I got confused with this lunch date and ended up at the OG 1900 Barker location on Barker and it was so small (yet undeniably charming) I was thinking I had to be in the wrong place. Turns out I was but it was a quick jaunt over to the Mass location. Walking in, it's exactly what you want a bakery/cafe to be: light, airy, charming, and warm. On top of that, you've got a full bakery case with all sorts of goodies and an enticing lunch/brunch menu. I went with their take on a BLT and my god was it good. I updated my side to fries and they were equally spectacular, though so big I couldn't finish them all on my own, which is not a problem I mind having! I purchased a cold brew to go for the way home and a sandwich for my husband to enjoy later - he reported it was equally good. My only qualm is that it's pricey, but I'm still sticking with 5 stars because honestly I didn't mind paying for it when it the food and dining experience was so lovely. read more

Love the food here. The ambiance is pleasant and there is surprisingly a good amount of seating with enough room to move around. The bread is amazing, the pizza special, the toast with tomatoes cheese and pesto - add scrambled eggs to make it more phenomenal. Classic chewy chocolate chip cookie is good as well. I do have one thing I'm not comfortable with though and that's all the use of boxes - even for the cookie- could have been a simple paper sleeve. It feels very wasteful. The graphics are very well done though so I like the boxes and printed paper - makes me want to save them and bring in for reuse! Barker street location is also a gem but there was someone working there the other day with an unpleasant attitude - that needs fixing. read more

It's giving modern home-y cafe. I really liked the feel and the way seating is set up, it feels a bit like if a library got some food in it. The latte was surprisingly very good, even though it was just a normal whole milk latte with some vanilla caramel you could tell the espresso was taken care of so I would say it's worth the money. I also got the breakfast burrito and it was also really good however I found a hair in it near the end which was a little disturbing. So I had to knock off a point for that. Otherwise I'd probably come back, the coffee at least was worth it. read more

On a hunt to find a coffee shop and some wifi, we stumbled upon 1900 Barker on Mass. Recently opened, yet packed, we realized this was the second location of another coffee shop in Lawrence. We got waters, coffee, and a chocolate croissant. I tried the latte, and I was not a fan. Could have been the coffee, could have been me. I couldn't tell ya. I'm not a coffee connoisseur. The chocolate croissant on the other hand was perfect. Huge, fluffy and flaky, buttery and chocolaty. Service was quick and efficient. It was also a help yourself to free water kinda situation. The location was clean, the bathrooms were great, and the decor was industrial and trendy. It definitely fit the vibe of a well-loved coffee shop, with friends chatting, people working on laptops, and others casually reading. Super great place! read more

1900 Barker on Mass is the newest addition from the owners of the original 1900 Barker bakery and coffee/espresso. They're also to my knowledge the owners of the new bakery across from Lawrence High School. One thing right off the bat: these folks know how to craft world class breads, croissants, pastries, etc. They're masters, spot on. The loaves and pastries coming out in the afternoon at the original 1900 Barker are stunningly good. At their new spot at 816 Massachusetts St., once occupied by the now defunct Alchemy, they've found the perfect home in downtown in my opinion. And, from a cursory glance and a few bites from being there in person this morning I can guarantee that record of masterful baking is intact, 100%. One of the most perfectly crafted croissants one could hope for. As I've vacationed in Paris four different times I've have a pretty good basis for understanding how one should be. The venue is stunning, easily the nicest and most inviting coffee shop/bakery in the city in my opinion. A gorgeous remodeling of a long-time ancient space that pays tribute to the old downtown feel of 100+ years ago with modern amenities, fantastic bathrooms (yes, I said that), cool window space up front and lots of natural light, the kitchen behind glass as part of the entertainment, and a great vibe to hang. But unlike the original 1900 Barker location which has spectacular espresso drinks, attention is clearly in order with whoever is running the operation here. All I had to do was look at my espresso to tell it was pulled incorrectly. Offering a picture as proof. Lacking crema, it suffered from either a bad pack, incorrect pressure on the steamer, or some other detail preventing it from meeting expectations. If I'm paying $3.00 for an espresso coming out of a five figure La Marzocco it should be prepared properly, and the barista should know better when they aren't. Unfortunately, the same espresso went into a friend's flat white which tasted off--his opinion, and mine--after a sip. Note: my espresso did come with a sparkling water as I prefer. To get a sense of their house coffee I asked if I needed to purchase one or since we had two espresso drinks if they were complimentary as some shops offer. I was told by a server she would give me a sample which was all I wanted, and I appreciated that friendly service. But lets just say the tasting notes on the black coffee came with the lingering smell of whatever perfume or hand lotion this server was wearing, which was quite strong and which I found offensive and off-putting. Getting by that, the house coffee was very, very light, not to my liking, but that's apparently a choice, and not one I would make again. I prefer French Roasts and bold flavors. In a third of a cup it was easy to see the bottom. So in all, business here looks brisk, and I wish this location well. But some attention to detail and training clearly was not home on our first visit, particularly with the coffee & espresso. read more

Super cute spot on Mass Street! We went on a Saturday around 9:30-10:00 AM and it was busy! They were already sold out of some of the pastries which is a good sign even though they were sold out of the ones I wanted. For breakfast we ordered the breakfast sammy and the breakfast burrito. The sammy was a bit messy but for good reason. The flakiness of the pastry the sandwich is served on is so good! The breakfast burrito was also really good and we both enjoyed our meals. We also ordered coffee to enjoy while enjoying our food. Overall we had a nice experience here and I totally recommend when you're in Lawrence. read more

Solid! Coffee on point! I ordered a Cortado. Usually, this drink gets messed up and I use it to judge the barista (the secret is out). It was great! My guest ordered a honey vanilla latte which was similarly excellent. It was well balanced -- not too sweet For breakfast I ordered the breakfast sandwich. That was absolutely outstanding. The pastry "bun" was the X-factor. My guest had a croissant. It was as expected for a bakery - excellent. Staff was friendly and helpful. The cafe is charming, but a bit loud. Not a deal breaker. Only about 1/3 of the tables have a power outlet, so planning a longer work/ study session may be problematic. read more

Great study place if you like a louder atmosphere. It can get quite busy, but the food comes out pretty fast. The breakfast burrito was really really yummy and super filling.
