I work close by and was in need of some caffeine one morning so I decided to give it a shot. The girl behind the counter was pretty nice. I ordered a regular mocha which I wasn't a huge fan of. I definitely should have ordered the tuxedo mocha instead. I think I'll stick with the new coffee place that opened across town. Stopped in for brunch with my fiancee on her birthday. She got a nice fruit smoothie and "The Drooler" which she said was outstanding. The smoothie was very fresh tasting and very creamy, she is lactose intolerant so they subbed milk with almond milk. YUM! I got "The Retreiver" which is sliced chicken bbq sauce and cheddar cheese on a ciabata roll. Tangy bbq sauce and the cheese had good flavor also. Love their coffees. Especially love the iced Americano with ice cubes made of coffee. Makes for a perfect drink that is never diluted with water. So smart! My only complaint is that they aren't the fastest to prepare drinks. But they are so good they are worth the wait! Also love their muffins. read more

Closer to 3.5 but I'd not go so low as to rate it a 3. In response to an earlier review, why in the name of heaven would you even consider rating this COFFEE house on a fine dining scale. This joint is superb, though I do have to complain about the flies. Flies are pretty heavy here, and you will likely be annoyed by them. The service is quick and friendly, the coffee is good as are each of the food items I have tried. I make a stop in EACH and EVERY time I am in Sonoma and don't feel that my trip is complete without at least one day starting off there. read more

There are many choices for coffee in Sonoma both corporate and privately owned. Barking Dog is the last choice. Mediocre coffee, baristas with poor attitude and no parking. With so many other choices skip this one. read more

I stumbled into here recently bleary eyed and in search of a good cup of coffee. Wow, was I impressed! It doesn't look like much from the road, but inside it's comfortable and inviting, with a wonderful neighborhood feeling to it. The regular house coffee (French roast) was exceptional - roasted properly, not burnt, unlike so many places. What a rare treat! The bagel sandwich was also delicious and the servers were helpful and prompt. read more

My go to coffee stop when I'm driving through Sonoma. They've expanded in the last few years, but the coffee and baked goods are consistently delicious. The outdoor picnic tables have been a nice addition. The only bummer is parking is rather limited, but you can always park in the lot across the street. read more

There is nothing special about Barking Dog except it is the only coffee shop in Sonoma I've found where you can sit and linger for long periods of time. The coffee is bad the employees don't really seem to care. The wifi is free and the plugs fit my laptop. That's enough for me when I need to go sit for a while and get out of the house. read more

Got a drip coffee here a while back. It was pretty tasty and flavorful however it took 10 minutes for the coffee to come out and on top of that it was already cold and my cup was only 3/4 full. I guess I should have said something but after waiting so long I just decided to put up with it and be on my way. read more

The only reason I'm giving two stars is the guy at the counter was friendly! The food was very disappointing. I ordered a bacon breakfast burrito and a #3 smoothie. I threw my burrito out after two bites and the smoothie wasn't made with the ingredients listed as the number 3 but it was to busy to waste time fixing so I tossed the flavorless burrito and chocked down half the smoothie. I won't be going back! I think stick to coffee if you do decide to try this spot! read more

I've been in BD Sonoma a few times. It's always been a great ace to grab a good cup of coffee and pastries when your heading up hwy 12. However I went in this Sat morning and OMG the guy behind the counter was much more interested in selling his music than selling coffee. There was a line of people but he just talked and talked with the customer about his music and moved at snails pace to close out. Just when i thought he was finally finishing, he went to go get his CD. That was it, I just left. No coffee was worth waiting for this. read more

The cappuccino was great. The experience of ordering it and waiting left a lot to be expected. I think our server may have been under the influence as he didn't seem to know how to work the coffee machine and didn't let us know whether we should wait or have a seat. After we did take a seat and waited for fifteen minutes, all in the absence of communication, he and the other server placed the coffees at the far end of the counter. This all happened without any eye contact during a time when no other customers came to the counter. Absolutely bizarre experience lacking any skill with customer interaction. I should have waited on the tip rather then put it in automatically on the iPad payment system. read more

Wow. I love small business coffee shops but this was awful. I stopped here to get a delicious coffee. It was awful. There were maybe two people in front of me and just one guy making drinks and one girl taking orders. The guy making drinks was on the phone 90% of the time I was in there. The woman in front of me waited ages for her two coffees. Waited several more minutes for my iced tuxedo mocha and it was horrible, it tasted like slightly flavored milk. I got into my car and decided I just couldn't let the $4.55 go to a complete waste so I went back in and got a iced black coffee. Which really was not equivalent in price and the girl did not offer me a refund for the difference. I didn't care because I just wanted to leave since my dog was waiting in the car! Ridiculous. Im not from Sonoma and theres lots of choices so i tried this place i ordered the brisket it was ok the meat wash drenched in sauce akin to A-1and bbq mixed. looked like a cool hang if your local took people behind counter a little long to even give eye contact but over all the food came out fast and it was ok. read more

Stopped to get a cup of coffee and use the WiFi. Plain cup, black, sat down and got online to check local movie times, a couple of minutes, and tried the coffe. Some of the worst coffee I've had in ages - heavy, thick, very dark, and so bitter that I almost spit it back in the cup. Well, my movie time was running short, needed to go, so just took the cup up to the counter and left it there. No reason to wait for Baristta to ask why, should have been self explanatory. They need to step it up if they want to be part of the rapid growth and development of the "Springs" area. read more

They get 2 stars because it was coffee and that's about it. Went here three times while staying at a local inn. First time was okay, coffee decent. Second time was about 15 minutes before closing and the girl couldn't have cared less, stale product and get out of here attitude. The third time the coffee was cold. I guess the apathetic staff bugged me the most. I don't want to be gushed over but basic pleasantries would be nice. Ended up going to Whole Foods for my fixes after those episodes.. read more

We were staying at the Fairmont across the street and decided to try this out for breakfast. While our first impression of the cafe was that a few more tables and some ambiance would work wonders, it was clear that this was a local hangout - no frills. The breakfast selection was limited, but very tasty - and thanks for the gluten-free options, too! We are big Kean and Portola Coffee Lab fans in Orange County, so I was interested in trying their coffee. Happy to report that the coffees were good as well - not great, but solid. The setting is what you would hope for. . . .slighting bohemian with a roaster in the corner. An enjoyable experience overall but not on the level of an ultra boutique shop like Blue Bottle, Stumptown or Intelligencia. read more

I went there to get a chai tea. It tasted like someone dumped a whole bunch of black pepper in it. I asked about it and the girl said it was their "special blend" what ever that is. I dumped it out as soon as I got to my car. I tried again and got a simple iced coffee. It tasted burnt. I'm sorry, I tried. I'll stick to Starbucks. I really wanted to like their coffee. While we thoroughly enjoyed the coffee and gluten free pastries, on the last morning of our visit in Sonoma we wanted to get some whole beans to take home and got there around 6:30 am when they were supposed to open. We left the cafe just before 7 am empty handed and still craving coffee because it still wasn't open. We weren't the only ones waiting and probably the only tourists waiting as well. What a sad end to our otherwise lovely time in Sonoma. read more

First off I want to say kudos to the staff at the Barking Dog. Not only do they work extremely hard (often by themselves) but they are sometimes over loaded with impatient people who don't seem to understand that, with only one person working, they are not going to get their coffee drink immediately. And from what I've noticed, the staff there don't seem to crack under the pressure of those impatient people glaring intently at them for going as fast as they could to make the drinks. To top it off, after waiting PATIENTLY for my drink as I was third in line, it still came out perfect and delicious, as it usually does. read more

The owner/manager must be the same way as I'm treated the same each morning I came in while staying at a loca inn. The brisket sandwich was ok, a bit dry and overcooked. They gave me the wrong drink (a mocha frap instead of a salted carmel iced). It tasted powdery. The tables are also super tiny so staying to eat is not really comfortable. I don't usually have this much go wrong at a coffee place. Kinda sad because it looked promising. read more
