During COVID-19, we have visited a handful of times and they're extra cautious, which makes me feel very comfortable. Original view still stands on one of Houston's greatest institutions. Small restaurant, so parking can really be tough in this area, but all in all it's good stuff. I usually go here before spending an evening at George across the street. Be careful of the traffic though. I tried the Cesar salad with chicken instead of their burgers this time. Their fries are the best here, and I'll have them anytime I can, but the salads pack a huge punch. The salad comes with the best Cesar dressing I've ever tasted, and the chicken is usually cooked to perfection. Their burgers selection is also thorough. I usually have a basic burger with Barnaby's fries, which is probably the best burger and fries combo in H town. There are also desserts and other drinks to try here, especially the local beers, but everything is pretty good. It's a small place, yes, but it's always been a favorite of mine. Other people who visit Houston have told me that it was the best salad or burger they've had. What can I say I've been a patron of Barnaby's this location since the early 90s. The food is amazing the portions are a great value for the money! My absolute favorite item on the menu is the delicious mouthwatering Guacamole Burger it is massive and very filling if you order fries don't forget to ask for Redeye and Bullseye to dip your fries in .. that's a little inside secret only us long timers really know about. The Mr. and I had a hankering to get our burger fix on and Barnaby's was our #1 choice! We really like coming here because the atmosphere is always festive. Everyone is laughing and having a good time. I am "particular Patty" when it comes to my burger and I have never had to complain or send anything back here at Barnaby's. Mr. had the mushroom burger, cooked medium and I had the regular burger (nothing fancy when it comes to my burger), cooked medium well. I know some of you are probably saying "dry", but really my burger was so juicy and good that I had to get extra napkins. The burgers were very flavorful. The wheat buns were good with a little sweetness. I like that the lettuce, tomato, pickles and onions were good and fresh, no limp stuff going on this burger! The fries are always well seasoned, fresh and hot. You always see the same people when you go into Barnaby's, so that is a good thing. We're in town to visit our friends for a New Year's Celebration. What do you do when you're hungry, it's New Year's day and you've just awoke from your partying last night and it's 3pm? You go to Barnaby's. Now, don't expect there to be an empty dining area, that would be ridiculous. Nope, the place is PACKED. Seriously packed. There are 5 of us in our party and we still have to wait around for 15 minutes for them to clear a table for us. Our waiter is wearing a "Don't feed the bears" t-shirt with the silhouette of a boy feeding a bear a muffin. The next picture shows the silhouette of the boy inside the bear and the muffin on the floor. Awesome. After a couple minutes of deliberation, we decide on what we want. I get the Guacamole Burger with regular fries. The Wife: the Chicken and black bean burrito. Our other friends: Meatloaf with mixed veggies, the chili burger and lastly, a chef salad. The Guac burger is huge. It's got a huge mound of guac on it and I know, the minute I bite into it, most of it's going to squirt out the back. It does but it's still good. The burger patty is cooked perfectly to medium. The shredded lettuce, tomatoes and onions are a perfect complement. The one complaint I have - the guac had no bite to it. There wasn't a good piece of jalapeno in it so it lacked style. I did have to salt the burger to get some flavor out of it, but other than that, I enjoyed it. It comes with a handsome side of fries. The Chicken and Black Bean Burrito is actually two burritos of Chipotle/Freebirds size. Okay, I exaggerate, but they're probably 75% or larger. It's a big meal. They looked delicious and before I could eat the leftovers, my wife had already got to them tonight, sad. It does come with a good half a cup of quac as well. The Chef's salad comes in a huge bowl with a HUGE mound of stuff on top. If you tried to toss the salad, half of the contents would end up on the table. Our friend ate it until it was level with the edge of the bowl and was full. Meatloaf. It looked HUGE. Covered in tomato sauce it was exactly what our friend wanted. Comes with a scoop of mashed potatoes, green beans and red bell peppers. Chili Burger: Also huge and covered in chili, cheese and onions. Our friend decided to go with the sweet potato fries and everyone thought they were delicious. I'm not a fan of sweet potato fries, so I did not try one. The ambiance is normal. The walls are covered in dog and dog related paintings. Barnaby is a dog and this place is a shrine to it. On one wall is a dog with a snorkel mask, underwater with a dolphin carrying a bone in its mouth. Odd, yes but it somehow works. Everything is dog themed. But you're not here for the themes, you're here for eating. There are people dressed up pretty schnazzy to a muscular guy in gym shorts eating by himself having trouble getting out of his booth chair because of all his muscles. The noise level is above average but we didn't have any trouble hearing each other when we were speaking. read more

Barnaby's is quickly becoming one of my favorite restaurants. After splitting the spinach artichoke dip, blue cheese fondue waffle fries, and meatloaf (all which are ridiculously good) with a friend for lunch, I knew this place was for real. The portions are huge, prices are fair considering you'll more than likely have leftovers for the next day, and their menu is very diverse. Other items that are GREAT are the buffalo burger (the boyfriend adds blue cheese and bacon...mmmmm....), the chili dog, sweet potato fries, corn dog (a hidden treat on the kids menu), cookies, and red velvet cupcakes. We've also had Rex as a server and he is really great--super entertaining, fast service, friendly, knowledgeable about the menu, what else could you ask for? Barnaby's is definitely a new go-to spot for the boyfriend and I, just wish there was one closer! read more

We've been here about a handful of times now. Mostly because one of us is obsessed with the meatloaf (don't worry, I'm still vegan :)). So the food is on par with the other Barnaby's I've been to, except this location has the secret menu pasta dish. I'm not sure what it's all about as I've only seen other people order it. One day I shall convince the omnivores to order it strictly so I can take photos of it and report back to Yelp. Speaking of obsessed, it's not so much obsessed as I always just default to the falafel burger because I'm not sure what else is vegan. As I mentioned in my review of the Shepherd location - it's a densely packed fried puck of nicely spicy chickpea goodness. Maybe not the prettiest burger patty, but definitely delicious. I typically order the sweet potato fries and they're coated in some delicious crunch coating, or so it seems. The only thing that compels me to rate this three stars instead of four, is the more-than-sometimes inattentive service. Granted, it does get busy and I've noted our servers hurriedly running amok, taking orders, granting request, but I know we've definitely noticed and unanimously commented that we seem to be ignored a little more than some of the other patrons on a couple of occasions. Kind of not cool when we're lingering for an additional thirty minutes waiting to settle the check when a large group, which arrived thirty or forty minutes after us, is served and out the door while I'm still waiting for my extra napkins. But hey, this could easily evolve into a four star rating if this ceases to occur during subsequent visits. EDIT: The hamburger buns are not vegan. I was initially misled. Bastards! read more

Everything here tastes so fresh and the customer service is excellent... the waitor/ waitress are always friendly and on top of things. I came here last Friday to eat and since I'm still on my veggie diet, I had my first Bocca burger. The patty is made out of soy and actually it tasted like a real burger. It was not too bad. Oh for appetizer, we had the waffle fries with blue cheese (that was so yummy!). I was never a big fan of blue cheese but it was so good that I ate almost all of it. The appetizer had melted blue cheese, bacon pieces, and scallons on top of the waffle fries, of course I didn't eat any waffle fries touching the bacon pieces. This was our first stop off the plane after landing in Houston. Our airbnb. host made the suggestion for us and we could not have been more pleased. Mushroom Swiss burger perfectly medium with fries enough to feed 3 people. The other burger, the standard cheese was well done as my husband likes it. He had the side of asparagus and said it was delicious. Our companion diner had the small Caesar salad, with chicken. It was fresh and tasty. The service was great and the waiter was right there filling up the tea glasses when they got low. We ordered the carrot cake to share and I still brought some home. It was amazing. Seriously, save room for the dessert. Prices were very reasonable and if I lived here this would be a regular eating/grazing spot. Art work so funny. Very helpful and attentive. All the staff were friendly! Food and drinks: I had the green eggs and French toast. It was delicious! The green eggs were different from anything I've had before but they were definitely a hit. My bf had the plain pancakes and chicken sausage. He enjoyed his meal as well. This long-standing pop-and-pop restaurant is located in the Montrose district of downtown Houston. Very eclectic, re-gentrified, artsy neighborhood. This SMALL restaurant houses about 7 booths and 6 tables - very small and quaint. This time I ordered their well-known, locally famous Egg Salad Sandwich and, of course, their Sweet Potato Fries!!! The meal was incredibly good!! The sandwich was not full of a dill, or sweet, pickle taste (yuck!) - quality egg flavor. And the sandwiches are HUGE here. We're not talking about a regular dinky 1/2 cup plop; it was a generous scoop that filled the entire bread soundly. The SP fries where AMAZING. So soft on the inside, but a light crisp to cover the outside - my hat off to this exquisite side dish :p The wait staff are quirky - made the trip relaxed and never felt rushed. Fun Fact - Barnaby's Cafe is named after the owners childhood Sheepdog! I was wondering why the ceilings and menu had cute dogs with wings and bones all over it. Which was super cute btw! We went when it wasn't lunch time any longer, but not yet dinner time! So it was just us and maybe 2 or 3 other tables. Our server (maybe the manager?) was so attentive and helpful! I got the Flatiron Steak medium rare with Mashed Potatoes on the side. The bf got the Chili Cheeseburger with the Famous Sweet Potato Fries with Chipotle BBQ Sauce. The food came out within a fairly decent wait time...so you know it was cooked once ordered. I LOVED my steak and my server asked if I wanted steak sauce and brought some over. The burger came with mustard...not sure if that's a usual thing or not. We had to ask for the chipotle sauce but once we had it....omggggg amazeeee! The bf finished most of the chili and burger but the steak was definitely better! The fries were yum esp with the sauce! I would definitely come back to try other items and hopefully for brunch at the adjacent Baby Barnaby's! ...Also the restroom (I can only speak for the ladies) is very small and for 1 person. It's clean but when you walk in the toilet is kind of backwards and the toilet paper is in an awkward position. I take a sit, no one offered water, napkin... nada. I made eye contact with 3 staff members, thinking they'll come over to at least take my drink order. Nope, didn't happen so I sit and look around. 3 people were seated by wait/hostess staff at the table directly next to mine, received drinks, & a server within 1 minute of sitting. I look again thinking she would ask have I been helped. That was too much like right, I guess! I place my shades on and walk out the door. Went there for lunch with a couple of guys from my team. It's a cute place but parking can be brutal during lunchtime (no lot, street parking). I had the guacamole cheeseburger which was JY-normous. It was really good and came with a heap of french fries. I also had the recession brownie which was a great ending to a delicious lunch. And it was cheap. The burger was a mere $10 and the brownie/ice cream was $1. I was in a food coma afterwards and spent the 10 min drive back to the office in and out of consciousness :) and NO I wasn't driving...lol To top off the yummy meal, the service was excellent! I really like the environment here and service was great as well, however the food was just ok for me. I had the turkey burger and felt like it was too salty and my sweet potato fries were a little burnt. My bf got the blue cheese and bacon burger and said it was one of the best burgers he has had and his fries were definitely a lot tastier than mine. How could I have not posted kind words before? We have been coming here (the original) regularly since it began (15+ years ago??). Always - "where haven't we been recently?" And Barnaby's is a likely answer and we are off (and usually looking for parking on a side street). Because we will have great food and fantastic service in a funky but always friendly spot. It is amazing for the size of the kitchen they can produce such a variety. Prices have crept up a bit (most entrees are in the $9 - $15 range; even burgers) but you won't go away hungry. Meats are "natural" - grass fed, organic, no growth hormones, etc. This is always a winner - especially if you want comfort food and in a lively atmosphere of happy conversing diners. read more

However, just from the looks of it, it must be pretty good if there's a huge line waiting to be seated. Thankfully since we were only grabbing a dessert to-go, we didn't really have to wait that long, but it was pretty cramped in the waiting area. We got a chocolate cake slice, which was pretty big to share between 2 people. It was reasonable price (~$6) for the slice of cake, and it was really rich and decadent, which is perfect if you love rich chocolate stuff, but for me, I do have to space out how much at eat at once. When they serve it to you, it's pretty cold, and kind of hard, but if you let it thaw out a bit, it tastes even better. Psh. Told you I would be back. So instead of going for the amazing (but incredibly calorie-dense) lasagna, I ordered the Chicken Fattoush Salad with Honey Mustard dressing on the side. Nice and healthy, right? Well, not really- if it comes in huge bowl the size of your... face? No, not nearly big enough unless you're Bill Clinton. More like the size of your TOILET SEAT! Yes, it is THAT big. I ate half of it. I think. Quantity over Quality? Heck no. There was a huge chicken breast on top of the fresh greens and crunchy cucumbers. It was juicy and tender instead of dry and flavorless. I dug the small chunks of feta cheese and the thinly sliced red onions. Raw onions can be a real turn-off. However, the onions were sliced thin enough so that they were subtle instead of overkill. With the honey mustard tossed in, it was a perfect, satisfying salad. It was also a huge plus sitting next to David Addicks- the man who formed the Sam Houston statue in Huntsville. What a gentleman. =) Service was good and being able to steal from my sister's generous amount of sweet potato fries was even better. After all, sweet potato fries are still healthy, right? Its my local favorite eatery and has been for years. The staff knows how to truly make you feel at home. I accidentally ordered online to another location, and before I could try to leave not only did the staff insist they would make my order, it was the fact that the staff knew my name. I'be been to other Barnaby's locations before but have only had their homemade spinach cheese lasagna here. I am a big fan of cheese so I really enjoyed the generous amount of cheese in the lasagna! I can barely taste the dough, every bite for me was spinach, cheese and the marinara-ish sauce made with fresh tomatoes. It's very flavorful, rich and satisfying. My friend is a huge meat fan but he also really liked the spinach cheese lasagna tho there's no meat at all! And the price is great too! This place is slightly smaller and dimmer than the museum district location I usually go to. The interior is mostly wooden do it also looks a little old. But good should be just as great. read more

I love coming here. They have some of the best salads I have tasted in Houston, not to mention HUGE portions. I get the half size which would probably be the regular size at any other restaurant. Our server was attentive and I never once had to ask for refills on my drink because as soon as I was getting low, he would be by to fill my cup up again. Just keep in mind when you come here to eat, their restroom are extremely tiny. It kind of reminds me of the lavatory on airplanes, but just a little bigger. The upside is that they are clean! Went here for lunch on a Sunday. There was no wait but there was a wait for breakfast next door at Baby Barnaby's. The food itself was good and the service was good. Our waitress was kind and nothing negative can really be said about her. The two negatives of this location are the atmosphere and the food descriptions. Compared to other Barnaby's I have been to, this one is much more crowded, run down, and unappealing inside. I know it's the original so maybe they're trying to preserve it. Also, there is minimal info about wa h menu item, so you don't get a full picture of what you are ordering. There is a place to scan the menu with a smartphone to get a longer description. For example, my husband ordered Asian wings, which is what is written on the menu. They came with a very large cucumber red onion salad on top which was actually more the bulk of the meal than the wings. He hates cucumbers - Would have been nice to know they were included. read more
