The service here is always great. Emploees will say hi in passing, giving you the opportunity to ask a question if needed, and there's always someone at the info desk in the middle of the store. But for the most part, they recognize that a solid browse is usually needed before you'll be ready to check out up front. I admit, once I find my books I always (always!) take a right turn before checkout to do a solid walk-thru of the papers, calendars, binders, candy- everything yu need to have cool, pretty things on your desk or bookcase. And theyy get me every time. I ike that you can put a book aside to pick up and pay in store. Some times I'm not 100% sure that I'm buying the book I want, so it's handy to not have to pre-pay for a pickup. The selections on the tables up front are usually fairly interesting - mysteries, current releases, popular titles. There's always something there that I haven't read, or a great gift idea. Yep, people still like to give and get real paper books! While I keep a dozen or so ready-loaded on my Kindle, my first love are books that stay with you and I'm always gifting one to someone who I know still reads, or is learning to read, or doesn't know that they need to READ A DAMN BOOK! Because I'm only there to help! Go. Listen to a story time. Attend an author event. Or get a Starbucks at the counter and grab a table. There are many worse ways to spend some time quieting your mind. read more

The Barnes & Noble and the Buck A Book in Downtown Crossing closed years ago, and more recently the B&N at the Pru closed during the pandemic in 2022. When I happened upon the Barnes & Noble at Derby St Shops, I came to realize that I had somehow been mentally convinced that there were no more open locations. So this was a pleasant surprise! As book stores close everywhere around and people are sad maybe the CEOs should visit the stores and see the problems. I have a kindle but went to Barnes and Noble for a book for a gift and was also shopping around. The person in the middle that helps you look up books was very helpful. However that's where it ended. We went to the cafe and I know it's Starbucks not Barnes and Noble but the people working there were very rude to us. They gave us moldy food we had to return no apology. Then when we went to check out at Barnes and Noble we couldn't remember the number for our rewards and the woman checking us out said snarkily "oh now we are onto the 3rd number" then when we went to give the other number she goes "wait a minute wait a minute" like yelling at us.....safe to say we will stick to our kindles and go elsewhere for gifts which sucks! But like I said if anyone is wondering why places are closing it's customer service related! read more

Sad to see so many Barnes closed up but glad to see this one surviving for now. They really have a vast selection for all types of readers. I kind of bounce around the Percy Jackson books, manga, fiction and some life skills / strategy type books. I also got a signed copy of the outsiders signed by the author from here for cheap! They also still do events at the store so peep the sign and stop in to support if you're free! The areas are well organized, I've seen some messes in other locations. They also have a good spread of highlight books with hand written descriptions! The employees when we went didn't talk much to us which is fine i rather not most times haha. Clean shop, nice coffee area to do some work and read, toy section, game and board game sections, builder sets, pop funkos, merch you name it. read more

It has been a while since I have taken a stroll at the Derby St Shops. We decided to check out Barnes & Noble & we were not disappointed! As a kid, I used to come here every weekend to pick out some new books to read (probably spent a few hours reading) & sometimes some new toys, so it was definitely super nostalgic for me walking around in here today. They've got a little bit of everything, for everyone! Anime, fiction/nonfiction, kids books, arts & crafts sets & books, cooking books, games, plushies... literally everything. Starbucks in Barnes & Noble... while convenient, I had a double espresso (note there is no X in espresso) for three dollars. I'm not thrifty, nor am I rich as a Rockefeller, well, maybe like Clark Rockefeller, but I ended up with a cup of coffee that was 3/8 inch full.l and quite luke-warm. Go figure. Caveat emptor. When I took my great nieces here ,for some book shopping it was full of people , such a pleasant vibe for a bookstore these days. A young lady had her arms full of books and was explaining to her bf why she need to get just one more to complete a series lol. Staff was friendly and helpful. Huge store and location, lots of books, pretty typical of most massive Barnes and Nobles but very very big. If you haven't been you will be overwhelmed a little. I personally have a hard time finding my way with how tall the shelves are. Maybe a map at the entrance would be a little better? If you want to spend $24 for a lunch, you're in luck, Starbucks (in the book store) can make even the most inexpensive sounding snack a gormet priced meal. read more

This past Saturday I visited Barnes & Noble in Hingham Ma with my two grand kids. We picked out $56.33 of toys. We stood on line Covet 19 style and our cashier was Laura G. I being a Vietnam Veteran, I asked with my vet card in my hand if they do Veteran Discount. Laura snapped back NO WE DO NOT. Wow , take it easy with my grand girls next to me being so rude. So I paid in full with my Amex card. So all you Military Vets out there please stay away from this store if you are looking for a Vet Discount,they donot care about us, and their staff is trained to be very very rude should we even ask for it. Came in with one of my friends super tired from a long day and long drive; both needed some caffeine and some food, everything else was closing, so we headed for the beacon of hope: books and Starbucks. Being the broke students we are, sadly we had to forgo the books and Legos, and went to the counter at the cafe. We had Hannah, the sweetest, nicest barista I've had in a very long time. She worked diligently while helping us (I couldn't make up my mind for the life of me) joked with us, and even brought us our food when she didn't have to and we offered to take it because it was late and there are closing duties. But she was phenomenal! She made a drink for me that hit all the right spots, and my food was done perfectly. I've never been happier to have a quick dinner at a bookstore. the cafe is terribly set up , waited a good 10 mins in line when there was only 3 people ahead , ordered the new Starbucks drink a strawberry coffee funnel cake Frappuccino and broccoli cheddar quiche, the girl didn't know how to put in my gift card I received thru Verizon had to call a manager just to put in a 3$ coupon, long wait just ordering at the register went to the drink pickup just to see my drink had just been sitting on the counter not even made yet. When the girl started making it she made it coffee free I said that's supposed to be the "coffee " Frappuccino not the creme based , then she shrugged and did an eye roll remade it and it was just mediocre. Quite a great store! Barnes & Noble at Derby Street Shoppes is a great example of how bookstores are still relevant (and necessary). Plus they've got a coffee shop. They've adapted and changed with the times, and have consistently stocked items such as: -comic books, graphic novels, manga -CDs, DVDs, and even vinyl (in limited quantities) -stationary, great for the "bullet journal" trend -current diet/lifestyle non-fiction, cookbooks, etc. -pop culture bric-a-brak (like figurines, games, of popular movies and books) -board games and puzzles, including RPGs Of course, they still stock wall-to-wall books of every sort imaginable: fiction, non-fiction, young adult, children's books, coffee table tomes, and so on. Some of the organization leaves a little to be desired. For example, "Archie" and "Calvin and Hobbes" are not in the same area as comic books and graphic novels. They're in the humor section. One recently discovered feature I love is that I can search for a title online, check to see if they have it in store, and if they do, reserve that item for pickup. It's usually ready within 20-30 minutes (but they say wait 1 hour), and can be picked up back in the multimedia section, where the CDs and DVDs are. One aspect I *don't* like about this is: the online price listed will not be honored in store. The website shows you the pick-up store's price as a "warning" since the local B&Ns do not honor the online price from their own website. Finally, I'd have to say that the helpfulness of the employees at this location is hit or miss. There's plenty of employees floating around, stocking shelves and organizing, but there's been a few times when I've been met with mild annoyance at asking for help. Most recently, however, one woman knew right away where the "Calvin and Hobbes" books are (humor, not comics). If, perchance, you encounter someone rude, go ask someone else. It's like a lottery of helpfulness. Books are beautiful, people! Now, to continue building my "Beauty-and-the-Beast-level" library. read more

This is a typical big box bookseller, well one of the last ones left I guess. B&N is average at best, what makes this location a bit above the fray is the Starbucks inside it. The service is prompt & always with a smile. The seating area is spacious, inviting & the free wifi is nice. read more

Ever been to a Barnes and Noble? Great, this place is ALMOST EXACTLY THE SAME. For some reason I find myself coming to bookstores more than I should. I mean, I read a book every 3 months or so. But, alas, I've been here a handful of times already. And its a pretty good location. Nothing really new here. Its a big-box brick-and-mortar bookstore. They probably have what you're looking for or can get it for you if they don't. Every time I've been here there has been staff available should I need help but no one approaches you if you don't seek them out. Probably the way it should be. Wow! Where to start with B&N! It is Amazing. It has a wide variety of Books, CDs and DVDs. There is a children section for young readers, with an amazing setting and selection of books. The adult and teen selection must have thousands of books. From fiction, to non-fiction, to historical, to fantasy, to biography. Plus, there is a little doctor who section for all you fans. The only thing that makes me sad is that these are the reason that independent bookstores are dying. The coffee shop is also very impressive. The coffee is from Starbucks, and a few of the pastries are from the cheesecake factory. The downside would be the seating. There is pretty much only two-people tables which is inconvenient if you want to hang out with a group. read more

This is one of the better Barnes & Nobles in the area. The Prudential B&N is always crowded and the shelves are a mess. The Braintree location is small and often under-stocked. Like Goldilocks would say, this B&N is just right. The store itself is large and it seems like they always have the most popular titles in stock. Rarely have I seen the shelves emptied after popular title releases. The coffee bar area is clean, and there is plenty of space to sit and read or use your laptop. What sets this location off from the rest is the staff. They are helpful, friendly, and always willing to help you find your way around the store to find the title you're looking for. Furthermore, they are great for collecting recommendations on "what to read next" after you find the title you're looking for! The only bad part about this store is (aside from getting in and out of the Derby Street Shoppes) the packs of middle school and high school age kids that run around the store being loud and obnoxious. Unfortunately, management just plays a deaf ear to it. read more

I have to give this place a good amount of credit. Not only have they survived as the last big-box brick-and-mortar bookstore around, their Hingham location has managed to find a balance between staffing, organization, and stock. You can find what you need, if you need assistance, there's someone there to help you out. Their Nook department is staffed with folks who know about that item, and in general, you can get anything you need. Barnes & Noble is always a great place to be. This particular one is no different. While this B&N could use a makeover on the inside, its selection is pretty superior to other ones I've been to. I walked in and found everything I wanted immediately. I realize that I could've been there on a good day, but considering the amount of traffic in the store at the time, it's pretty impressive. I highly recommend this particular store, and the chain as a whole. My only complaint here is the inside of the store, and the organization. Could use a little work. They serve Starbucks, which is cool, and the free wifi is very nice, but there is this loud beeping (a faulty alarm) that gets really annoying. It chirps probably every three minutes. Tried to return a book purchased on 1/21/17 today (27 days later). had receipt and was in brand new condition in bag - never opened . I explained that my son purchased it and has been hospitalized since then. I found the book in his car. I was told you have only 2 weeks for returns. Even though I had a receipt for full purchase price ($20.00) they would only give him a store credit for the lowest price it ever sold for (16.00) I will never shop at Barnes and noble - I intend to take this further when my son is better. read more

Their cafe people needs some more training. Everytime I order something to eat, they assume that I am taking it home with me when all I want is a plate and fork to eat. Worst Experience I have ever had at a retail store. I took my family in to Barnes and Noble today to let me daughter pick out a few books for her birthday. When we were in the children section a sales woman, Alba, stood over my children and glared at them the entire time we were shopping. My daughter (who just turned 3) was taking books off the shelves and looking at them. Alba made it very clear that she was annoyed and this was unacceptable. She went so far as to take books out of my daughters hands and asked her "did you take this out young lady?" My husband and I were making sure she put things back when she was FINISHED choosing the books she wanted (we had only been there for 3 minutes when the saleswoman made her put the books back that she was still considering). Then when we went to checkout of course it was Alba who was checking us out. My daughter waved at her and said "Hi I'm three" (very excited about turning 3) Alba gave her the meanest look I've ever seen anyone gave a three year old and didn't say a word. I know how frustrating it can be to work with the general public but why take it out on a three year old. Not acceptable behavior from a grown woman. read more

This review is primarily for the horrendous coffee shop they have the nerve to call a Starbucks. $5 grande lattes should taste better than day old Folger's! Ordered 2 peppermint mochas, 2 chocolate milks for the kids, and a cookie. $16. Neither latte had ANY sweetener or syrup. The 17 year old with dread locks making them didn't agree; instead of remaking, she argue. Terrible experience will not be back, Dunkin is better than this place. read more
