My Beloved and I frequently celebrate special events - birthdays, Valentine's Day, anniversaries, work-related and other accomplishments, etc. - at Barona Casino's steakhouse, Barona Oaks. The casino comps our dinner, and our experience suggests that we'll enjoy a lovely meal. The restaurant is intended for grownups, and is thus willing to take, and honor, reservations. As a part of its COVID-19 protocol, Barona Oaks limited service to the casino's Diamond and Platinum members, which continues to make it easy for us to book a table. Sadly, membership at those levels doesn't imply class or style, and we occasionally finds ourselves seated near a table full of loud-talking bros, shrieking woo-hoo girls, or a combination of those things. We generally reserve for as early as 5:30. Make your Boomer jokes, but there's nothing wrong with avoiding competition for a good table; being fed and served by staff who aren't worn out by a hectic evening's work; and getting the pick of the day's best ingredients. Plus, eating early at a casino allows plenty of time for gambling afterwards, and as a bonus, the noisy jerks I mentioned typically eat later in the evening. The elegant room is always lit low, its corner fireplace stoked and homey, and the furniture is typical of such places: oversized, solid and comfortable. It's not unusual to see a couple secretly snogging in one of the high-backed booths that ring the room, while the pianist plays American standards with professional restraint, understanding, as he does, that he is not the show. The show, of course, is the menu, which was pared down during COVID times to an essential steakhouse list: a dozen classic appetizers, soups and salads; USDA Prime steaks; fish, shrimp and lobster; and decadent sides. This familiar bill of fare is what I imagine wealthy, middle-aged, golf course-dwelling guys consider "comfort food." The restaurant's chef, Mike Davis, runs both Barona Oaks and the casino's Italian Cucina. Chef Mike has a lot on his shoulders, and he handles his business well. The man is remarkable for at least three reasons: he's a good cook, innovative, yet respectful of tradition; he's receptive to customer suggestions; and he's a cheerful, humble dude, intent on making his guests happy with their meals, instead of being preoccupied with doing a pretty song-and-dance at tableside. Downtown chefs could take a lesson. So, what's for dinner? At times, the menu, simple though it may be, poses me a dilemma: I know I'm having steak, but what should I have first? Chilled shrimp cocktail is an old-fashioned yet solid choice; the kitchen offers gorgeous 16/20's, perfectly cooked in a tasty braise. But I'm often tempted by glazed pork belly or a lobster "Martini," or, when I plan to eat a large steak, the crisp, clean flavor of an iceberg wedge topped with bleu cheese. Of course, I can't have all of those things. I hesitate, and my head spins as I'm compelled to choose. Waiters hate me. For my main course, I've ordered Barona Oaks' two pound Maine lobster a few of times, and nothing wrong with that, but, as my East Coast friends will attest, lobster is best eaten in sight of the boat that captured it. As I say, I generally have a steak. Over the years, my preference has shifted from Porterhouse and ribeye to NY strips, because, while those others deliver excellent flavor, I've become more sensitive to their fattiness, and I've never liked that I needed them cooked to medium to melt out the fat. So strip steak it is. Skeptical? When the kitchen has it, try a 12 oz. Snake River Farms Wagyu Gold New York Steak, cooked medium-rare. You'll see. I mostly skip dessert. By the time my waiter offers, I'm generally semi-conscious, and if I say "yes," I'm really just ordering out of habit, not hunger. That said, I've always been happy with the place's baked goods. I'll grant that Barona Oaks is a bit of a hike, but I promise that the meal is worth the trouble. Although we recently relocated to west N. County and are closer to Pechanga... we still highly favor Barona and we make the special trip. The steakhouse is our absolute favorite, as we've been coming here for YEARS. Ambiance is absolutely stunning. It's comfortable and quiet. Food is exquisite. Prices are competitive. Service is client-centered from the hostess to the serving team. Rodrigo has been our server before and is absolutely exceptional. Recently Jorge was our server and he was absolutely wonderful too! We took our dear friend here last night to celebrate his 86th Birthday. We come often to Barona to play slots, but had never eaten in the steak house. We had an incredible experience. First of all, the room is very cozy and beautiful. We sat by the fireplace and enjoyed the piano player. Our waiter, Oscar, was fantastic. Our friend had the Lobster Bisque that came with large chunks of lobster in it. He ordered a filet mignon which he kept raving about as "perfect." My husband ordered a Caesar salad and a rib eye and I had the rack of lamb. All three dishes were cooked to perfection, and were absolutely delicious. As for the entrees, the Filet Mignon was extremely dry and the bearnaise sauce that accompanied it was too sweet. The Wagyu steak didn't taste like Wagyu; it wasn't fatty enough. Celebrating MIL's 82nd birthday and since she loves Barona figured we would have a nice dinner and do a little gambling. Restaurant is located on the lower level and has great ambiance. Dark lighting but the furniture is very light an D inviting. They post many awards for being the being the best Steakhouse in San Diego. This was a bit suspect because Ruth's Chris, Fleming's, Island Prime, the now defunct Donovan's, have all been very consistent. Upon being seated they asked if we were celebrating the MIL's birthday. But, there was already birthday confetti on the table. Drink orders were taken and I had the Manhattan. Very generous pour and tasted great. The menu is very diverse and comes with many protein options, not just steaks. Pricing was excellent and diversity was wonderful. Most entrees come with a starch and veggies unlike other steakhouses, which makes this even a better deal. A very nice touch is that the menus are backlit, so you don't have to bother other guests by turning on a flashlight to see the menu. I started with the wedge salad, which came with a good amount of dressing, bleu cheese, and bacon. Around the table were orders of prime rib and ribeyes. All perfectly seasoned, presented well, perfect temperature, and very tender. The table had fresh hot bread selection, warm and crusty. Now this is where our 5 star experience comes crashing down. As part of the steak order you have the choice 2 of their house 6 sauces. We realized after ordering that the waiter never asked what sauces we preferred. When he came by I inquired about the sauces, and he said that since we didn't ask he selected for us. Pretty presumptuous on his part. After placing our order, it took over minutes to get our food, even though we were the first ones in the restaurant, we only had 4 diners in our party, and tables seated after us got there food sooner than we did. Refills and table checks were few and far between. Lastly unlike other birthday guests there was no further acknowledgement of my MIL's birthday, to me 82 years is a significant milestone. For comparison when I went to Fleming's for my birthday. The manager came by personally, gave me a card, and a complimentary dessert. This was an amazing dinner that I will never forget. The food and service that we experienced here was the best i've ever had. We both felt like VIP's for sure. We had a great booth close to the fire so the ambiance was perfect. We started with a seafood platter that consisted of mussels, crab, shrimp, oysters, ceviche and three different kinds of sashimi. I would return and just order this platter by itself with a salad or soup starter the next time I visit here. It was that good and that filling. The steak and food was really good and at a very decent price. Much less than other steak houses we usually frequent. The ambience is really nice and classy, not crazy and fast paced like the buffet area. There was live piano music and a nice fireplace in the dining room. The menus light up and so does the bill .. pretty cool considering it's pretty dark in the restaurant. I had the prime rib queen, nice size, comes w a potato and veggies. Came here for date night to try something new! We made a reservation for a Saturday at 7:30pm and were seated right away. I do recommend calling in for a reservation a few days before to make sure you get seated and don't have to wait. It was a busy night. The ambiance was romantic, and there was a live piano player playing music. What we ordered: -Ahi & Hamachi poke: delicious and refreshing! Came with 3 fried wonton cups. Good for 2-3 people. -dry-aged New York strip: my husband and I ordered the same thing. I got mine medium-rare and he got his medium. Temperatures were perfect! We both got it with bacon cheddar gratin. Although the gratin was good, I think next time I would've gotten something lighter, like just the potato purée. The steak also came with some broccolini, carrot, and haricots verts. The sauces we chose were: bbq, Demi-glacé, horseradish cream, and house-made steak sauce. I recommend the demi-glacé as it added more meaty flavor to the steak. The rest were just okay. The house-made steak sauce was interesting though. Had a slightly sweet, almost berry-like taste to it. -side of roasted mushrooms: so yummy! I really liked eating the enoki mushrooms in it. Overall, service was good, and food was even better. We did see a couple order a tomahawk steak and lobster that I didn't see on the menu. It was huge! This place is small but mighty! In my opinion, you get a lot for your money. We had an iceberg wedge, which was crisp and fresh with very tasty bacon. Next, we had truffle fries. they are a MUST HAVE. For entree's, we got a rib eye (I want to say it's 12-16oz) and 1/2lb of king crab legs. The rib eye came with bacon cheddar potatoes and steamed veggies; all were excellent. The crab was perfectly cooked and served, of course, with butter! To top off the birthday event, we chose molten chocolate lava cake. All in all, I'll absolutely come back. We stopped here for dinner on a whim, not wanting to drive almost an hour into Ramona. When we entered the casino and asked about eateries the host told us the Italian restaurant and steakhouse downstairs were the only places we could get "adult beverages", so that took care of that. I had some misgivings about eating in a casino restaurant but I was pleasantly surprised. The dining room is very relaxing with its soft lighting and beautiful fireplace (we were woefully underdressed but I suspect they're more than used to this). We were seated by the fireplace and given menus, which light up when they're opened, a really nice touch since the room is pretty dark. There's a pretty large menu, and to be fair it's somewhat pricy, but we decided to share and it worked out well. The bread basked is really tasty and has three different varieties of bread. We started with the Pacific oysters which were huge, fresh, meaty, and tasted of the sea; the accompanying sauces (cocktail & mignonette, along with miniature bottles of Tabasco and lemons) were tasty and when my g/f asked for horseradish they brought some right away. After that we shared a wedge salad that was a little skimpy on the bacon but came with some beautiful heirloom tomatoes instead of diced, a nice plus. I don't eat tomatoes but my g/f said they were outstanding. We split a 14 oz. ribeye that was a bit on the fatty side but cooked medium-rare on point. The gratineed potatoes were pretty ordinary as were the veggies, but the Bordelaise sauce in the little pot was a nice touch. The kitchen didn't have any issues with splitting dishes and we weren't charged extra, a nice touch. They were featuring a 2015 Walter Hansel Chardonnay from the Russian River Valley (Sonoma) that was a tasty choice and very fairly priced at $35; I also asked for a glass of the Justin Cabernet along with the steak and it was generous and priced fairly as well. The service was friendly, courteous, and very professional. Our server Rodrigo was very engaging and he told us he'd been working there for 20 years, so they obviously treat their people well. There was also a piano player whose repertoire included favorites from the Sinatra songbook along with many other choices. His playing was a little on the "over-frilly" side, but a good fit for the room and the crowd. I walked over to make a request and chatted with him for a bit; turns out he's been playing there for 14 years and we had some musician acquaintances in common, as he'd lived and worked in L.A. back in the '90s. We didn't have room for dessert & took almost a full meal home, but we're on the older side of the equation; most people will find portions on the generous side. They have a nice wine list, too. Overall if you're in the area and are looking for a meal to splurge a bit, I highly recommend this place. Since we shared plates we got out of there with a first course, a salad, the entrée a bottle and one glass of wine for just over $100 (w/o tip), which is a great value for the quality, service, and setting. read more

We dined here years ago, and it was fine. Fast forward to now, and we tried to dine here again. We arrived for a special occasion, and we were ready to have a wonderful, celebratory dinner. However, once we arrived at the hostess desk, we found out that we wouldn't be accepted into the restaurant because we are not VIP members. Really?? So, there are hoops that people need to go through to dine at your restaurant, Barona? It's obviously your business, and you can run it how you choose. The service here is excellent! Our server was Jorge and he was attentive and asked us how our meal was without hovering which we appreciated. My sister and I came here because the line for the buffet was a 3 hour wait. For appetizers we ordered the lump crab cake, calamari, and escargot. The crab cake was one of the best we've had anywhere. They give a lot of crab and there's no breading, the oranges were a great addition to the plate because of the citrus. The calamari was good as well, but I don't recommend eating the fried yellow vegetable, it was really bitter and not appetizing at all. The escargot was our least favorite. It was soaked in butter and garlic and cake bubbling hot, but there was no flavor even if we added lemon. Other places like island prime use puff pastry which I love with the escargot, but they give two crostini with a type of cheese/butter on top here which doesn't really help with flavor. For entrees we ordered the king prime rib, two pound lobster, and the 20oz. bone in rib eye. with a side of parmesan and truffle fries. First off this was the best bone in rib eye and truffle fries I've ever had. That was the best part of the meal. The lobster was a bit dry and hard, I've definitely had better lobster, but the lobster stuffed potato is the first I've had and it was pretty good. The prime rib my sister said is good and super soft. The seasoning was also really good. They cooked our steaks perfectly! The vegetable to meat ratio was too small, but vwho likes vegetables anyways. The cheese on the gratin potatoes were rich and the taste gets tiring. For dessert we ordered the creme brûlée and we got a creme brûlée Togo. The lava cake was really good and the ice cream with the toffee/peanut bits was super good together. Don't forget to make your reservation! When we arrived we we're greeted with a beautiful smile from the host Lizet, she was very friendly and welcoming. We were seated directly across from the fireplace which made for a romantic night. After being seated we were offered water and bread right away. My husband and I placed our food order right away and sat enjoying each others conversation, the pianist playing in the background created the perfect ambiance. When our food arrived, we were astonished with how large the lobster tail was. And let me tell you, this magic dish of yumminess serviced to dip the lobster was absolutely amazing. We enjoyed a delicious dinner at the Oaks last night, in celebration of my parents anniversary. The wait staff was wonderful, the food was excellent and the entertainment provided by the pianist was so enjoyable. They served outstanding bread and butter, and the prime rib eye was delicious. We also thoroughly appreciated the cocktails and the unique manner in which they were presented! We look forward Update: since posting an excellent experience at The Oaks Steakhouse I have attempted numerous times to make a reservation, and have consistently turned down, staff siting that in order to dine here you must be a VIP member of the casino. I'm really put off by this. Please explain, and let me know when I might be able to dine here again. I'm very disappointed in this turn of events, especially after sharing my very honest and gratuitous review. read more

This is without a doubt one of the best steakhouse in San Diego. It's not the steaks that keep me coming back it's their damn appetizers. The crab cakes are the best crab cakes you will ever taste, the scallops are fucking amazing, the ahi poke is to die for. Even though the decor and live pianist gives the environment a boojee feel. This still located in a casino and you can come in dressing casually without people giving you the stink eye. If you play enough, you should be able to get these meals comped as well. Skip the buffet and try the steakhouse if you want a great experience and amazing food. read more

First let me tip my hat to Lizet the hostess for accommodating us with a table when our situation seemed bleak. Thanks again Lizet. Wow, what great food and true steakhouse atmosphere. My rack of lamb was cooked perfectly and my wife's filet was as well. The side were plentiful and delicious. And the desserts were scrumptious. The prices on the wine list and our cocktails were very reasonably priced which I noticed as from previous visits to other high end this is sometimes where they, "stick you." Our server Jorge and is back up Mario were very friendly and a pleasure to meet. Looking forward to our next dinner there. read more
