Been going here with my momma since I was little and now go here by myself as a grown adult! I've seen this supermarket change so much, from when chips were 99 cents to now, where inflation has hit the Bay/Oakland so hard. Sun Sang is definitely a smaller market, but it has all you need for all your Chinese groceries. There is a butcher area and a water zoo (fresh fish) in the back. Their groceries are pretty cheap and competitive. I always get my to-go snacks such as rice crackers and pocky here. I also find Sting, an energy drink that I can't seem to find anywhere else here! read more

I was in Oakland for Hot Boys fried chicken & needed to do some grocery shopping so I stopped by Sun Sang Supermarket since it was close-by. The store is surprisingly clean & has tons of interesting products. I grabbed some fresh salmon & it was reasonably priced. When we cooked it, it doesn't give off fishy smell so you know it is the good kind. It also tasted fresh & not fishy. I also picked up some vietnamese goodies like rice paper, mama noodles, and five spices. The staff were friendly, too! Small but good enough of a grocery store to me! They have ample produce and meat/fish and frozen foods as well as other grocery items! They're not as cheap as other small scale markets but they have their own parking lot! So that beats having to circle round and round Oakland Chinatown or putting your car on double park! read more

This is a place where you can find everything but Soul Food. From live bullfrogs to live every kind of fish for human consumption. You can have it friend on the spot. Don't expect any seasoning and the oil may be old but you can get your friend seafood in a box lined with foil. They get two stars cuz the staff is not very friendly to non-Asian shoppers. I have also been in situations where I have to ask a female manager to make the fish employees acknowledge that I'm standing in line for service and not Prince tickets. I also find this store crowded with merchandise which makes the aisles very narrow and provides an excuse for regulars to knock you out while trying to move past you. In addition, I notice that during holidays like Christmas, crab prices get sky high above $10 per pound and these crabs, although live, look black, have holes, and unhealthy. Costco has pretty crabs for $8.99 per pound during the holidays, so why bother & deal with nasty attitudes? read more

If you love cooking the various cuisines of the world like I do, you might greatly appreciate Sun Sang. They have lots of Asian ingredients and a parking lot that make this place super approachable. Because of the location it is way less busy than the markets in Chinatown, (but they dont have any dry bulk ingredients), and they don't have as wide range in selection of seafood like some of the markets in Chinatown. For those reasons this place is also much more cost effective than some of the larger markets. I've been shopping here over a decade, so this review is long overdue. Sun Sang has a decent selection of fresh fish and you can even choose live fish, live crabs and fresh oysters. The butchers remember me and they are so personable. I always meet new friends here as well, it's a very inviting place and because the butchers refuse to speak much English you end up talking with the other customers more than you would at your average market. The produce is always seasonal, fresh and affordable and I love that they will butcher, clean and fry up anything you want right there. They charge just the price of the meat even to fry it and the fried seafood along with the fresh bread they carry and a few refreshments are the makings of a perfect picnic. I always come for the fresh oysters though, a box of 5 dozen is around $50 and they are usually huge! Delicious and perfect for grilling. read more

The seafood department is lowkey a great find. The fish look mostly fresh & they fry it for you there. I would give this place a 4 or maybe even 5 stars but the customer service is HORRIBLE if you are not of Asian decent. They could refute that all they want to but it's true. I just came in today to grab two pieces of their really good golden fish. The butcher was really nice & friendly to the two older Asian women he helped before me. Grabbed their fish for them & everything superb service. But when my mother & I who are both of African American decent were next it was a different story. His first interaction with us when I said hello was a blank stare. Then he tossed a red crate to us & didn't even say a word just pointed to the fish then to the basket. I assumed that was because he may not speak English that well & to some degree was factual. But when i told him Im sorry I actually wanted both my pieces of fish cut actually instead of sliced before he was even done slicing both pieces of fish he yelled OH MY GOD & mumbled something else while he viciously cutting up the fish in frustration. If I anything I was the one who was frustrated because I wanted to go behind the counter & slap the living life out of this man for being so blatantly disrespectful & racist. On top of that the woman at the register snatched the debit card out my mothers hand when she was going up to the counter to pay for our meal. I'm a disabled US Navy veteran & it's stuff like this that makes me so angry that I served my country to fight for some peoples freedom to live prosperously. I hope that the attitudes of certain people in that place changes expeditiously because there's no reason for you to get an attitude with me if I'm spending my hard earned dollars at your establishment. read more

Review #306 - 2018 I can always count on Sun Sang to have all of my basic Asian ingredients whenever I run out. I probably come here once a month or so, in particular, to get my 50-pound bag of Thai jasmine rice. They have plenty of fresh fruits & veggies for those healthy eaters. They also have fish & meat for those meat eaters. They seem fresh enough each time I did buy them in the past. I haven't actually bought any meat from them since I started buying all my meat from Costco. Most of their groceries are pretty decently priced. My biggest concerns are the cleanliness of their products so I avoid buying the meat, especially ground meat. The aisles are pretty crowded and the parking lot is across the street. They don't have many shopping carts so I've always had to lug all my groceries across the street. Thank goodness they always have someone deliver & load the 50-pound rice bag to my car. read more

Been going here when I was a child, tagging along with my parents and grandparents, now I'm the one holding it down. $10 credit card minimum. Kind of hard to meet that minimum when groceries are so cheap! If you are out of cash and need to make that minimum, treat yourself to those packs of Shin Ramyun Instant Noodle Soup! Usually I feel uncomfortable shopping at asian owned/operated stores because of profiling that occurs within the establishment, but this place has truly made me feel welcome at their store, and has quickly moved up in my list of favorite grocery stores in the area. This shop is definitely in a league of its own, tons of stores around offer fresh meat/seafood, no big deal, but not many places offer a free fish fry service. I love that you can pick out a live fish, have it cleaned and butterflied, then dropped into a vat of hot oil;cooked to perfection. If seafood isn't your protein of choice, they also offer plenty of beef, pork, and poultry; both sold fresh or frozen. Don't worry, if you belong to the sect of society who shuns meat and it's deliciousness, they have plenty of exotic fruits, vegetables, and legumes for you, all at dirt cheap prices. read more

They have lots of pre-wrapped Vietnamese goodies here that are pretty good. They carry fresh spring rolls, Viet desserts, and rice plates. They have a seafood department and to be quite honest, the seafood isn't so fresh. Everything looked super old and wreaked of rotting flesh.
