I've been here several times and purchased lots of live crab, but after the last extremely rude experience I won't be back. Go to GREEN FISH in Chinatown instead for your live crab. Lucky Seafood is a very small seafood market offering a variety of exotic live seafood, including live crabs. They have two tanks for the Dungeness crab, one with a larger crabs and one with smaller crabs. There is very limited street parking so try to get there early. And they only take cash. That was my first red flag, but I still supported this business. I came here to purchase live crab for the holiday season, about $300 worth, then I came back to purchase the same amount a week later for New Year's eve, just to receive the worst service I've ever experienced considering how much money I was spending. The guy got upset when I wanted to look at the crab he was trying to quickly throw in the bag without me seeing it, so he got mad and just dropped the bag on the floor and said "here you look at it!" and he walked away leaving me there with a bag of live crab to search through. I spent a lot of money at this store for the treatment that I've received and after this experience I decided it was the last time. I now go to green fish in Chinatown where they also have live seafood offerings and the customer service is much better. Lucky Seafood also smells really bad inside and green fish does not. HUGE selection of fresh seafood here! Just be aware that is is cash only. I was so stoked picking out some live female blue crabs for $8.99/lb but had to put them back after I found out they only take cash. The woman at the register was very kind and gave me a heads up that they are open tomorrow as well, but they may run out of blue crabs by then. Also, right now they have a bunch of Dungeness crab. It's crab season so I've been here often. Since I know what I'm doing with crabs it's funny to read all the reviews dissing on this place. But let's put things into perspective. First, if you've ever gone crabbing you realize that it's a bargain at any price to buy ur live and onshore. Second, folks complain about the water and using 2 bags. One paper to soak up some of the water and the plastic one which prevents leaks. The complaints about trying to rip you off by adding extra weight with water might be true, but not likely. So why the two bags? First one wet to keep the salt water intact. Remember these are not fresh water creature. They start to die quickly after being removed from the tank. Third, bugs, worms, parasites all are part of the ecosystem. No vendor can go through each package to ensure these animals don't tag along with the product you're buying. This spot really is a hit or miss, but one thing is consistent - it's always wet lol. This has been known as the crab spot when the season is in and the lines can be out the door for it. Prices are competitive with other Asian markets around. It's not the cleanest place, but it has such a variety of seafood and even some veggies in the front. Speaking on cleanliness, the most recent time we went the person handling the crabs were not wearing any protective gloves and his fingers were bloody while grabbing the crabs. Ouuuu this people make me mad! My mom wanted some oyster so we came to get a box of it . I asked the lady "how much are the oysters?" 45 dollar 60 pieces . I asked if I can take a look at it because from the previous review the oyster came with worms and was looking all type of nasty lol . I get it, the service is but great here but to be honest I expect this; but the quality and selection of seafood is great! And the few veggies / produce they sell are always better quality than Oak Chinatown. Prices are a little cheaper or same than Oak C-town as well. This is my go to for crab during the season!! Very good seafood market. We went here on Sunday and purchased 3 large live dungeness crabs. They were huge..!! 3 pounds each.!! The helper scooped them out of the live tank and bagged them up. I went to pay and the owner / woman and would not take my debit card even though there was a POS terminal next to the cash register.???? She said CASH ONLY... !! So 15 minutes later after a ride to Chase bank I came back and purchased the 3 crabs with cash. We had a fantastic crab dinner that night...! All the fish looked very fresh on ice..!!! Amendment to my review below. As much as I like this place that fact that they package BEFORE they weigh is not only a problem, I'm pretty sure it's illegal. I weighed the empty packaging (plastic bags within paper bags within plastic bags) for my six lobsters. After allowing it to dry it was 1.4 pounds. At $10.99 per pound I paid $15.39 (plus tax) for some bags. Hey guys--that's BS. You need to start weighing BEFORE you package. I am going to have a conversation with them next time I am there. Now--on with the review ... Wow ... why ya'll so whiny? I read some of the other reviews and really, what a bunch of prisses! People--this isn't Safeway. It's a wholesale fish market. They have fish. They are not about coddling you. If you want dry floors, English speakers, to have your credit card gleefully accepted, and manufactured familiarity as they call you by name at the checkout, then well, it's Albertsons for you. If you want inexpensive seafood that's of excellent quality, plain and simple, then go here. Admittedly, the experience shopping at Lucky is not for everyone. Don't wear your best shoes. This place is a working fish market, full of huge tanks filled with everything from lobsters to frogs (cute little buggers when the whole tank full is looking up at you--ribbit). The experience is reminiscent of the street-side fish markets in New York City I used to see when I was a kid. So if you have not been to a real fish market before set your expectations at "new experience," be open-minded, and be observant. Watch when they put your crab/lobster/whatever into the bag. Make sure it's alive and has all its extremities. A fresh lobster or crab should be making a noticeable fuss when plucked from its compadres. The place is wet. Is this really a surprise? The fish are packed into those tanks. Things splash and they are constantly hosing down the floor. Bring cash. This is a wholesaler so the fact they don't take credit cards should also be no surprise to the whiny review writers. Did you really want to institutionalize the purchase of that sand dab and pay it off over the next 14 years while having the merchant fees of 2.5 to 6% passed onto you anyway? Good prices. Fresh seafood. That's what's here. If you're looking for the Safeway experience then don't go because I don't want to hear you whining while I'm there next week picking up lobsters for Christmas dinner. Go to Safeway instead and get the stuff that's been frozen for two or three weeks and pricier, instead--but hey, they'll offer to help you out to your car, so there's that. I've been coming here for years and I've been very pleased with my purchases. Management staff is rude. This place overcharges big time for live crab. I called and asked for the price BEFORE I went there. I confirmed the price again when I got there. The guy at the register charged me a dollar more and also, they waterlogged my bag so that it weighed more. It went back a second time because hey, sometimes people make mistakes. Same thing happened!! overcharged and waterlogged bags, a common complaint on the review bored! I also watched the cashier overcharge even more African American and Latino customers! When I asked the family where should I get seafood in the eastbay. They recommended me Lucky Seafood. Are they the only holesaler around here or what? Cause their service & attitude say it all. PARKING: They don't even have a lot for the market so good luck with street parking! CLAMS: came here for clams few months ago. I believe it was $125 for one whole box for 25lbs. Clams were good. Nothing to complain about. Only 5 were open out of that whole box. So yes, it's a little bit cheaper if you get a whole box from them. OYSTERS: came back for the second time to buy oysters this weekend. It's $45/box for 60 clams. Some were emptied shelves & some were open which means dead. So DO NOT GET OYSTERS from them! TERRIBLE SERVICE/ATTITUDE: It wasn't the bad oysters that got me upset. I parked a lil far down the street due to no parking around. I asked the owner to help me carry it to my car. He straight out refused me. I was shocked cause I just bought a box of oysters from him. Not just a box of $6 fruits. And what kind a man are you to say no? Apparently Vietnamese jerk...like him does. (= STINGY: Oh and when I was there, I heard he screamed out asking who's plastic bag is this at the fish area. I've been here quite a few times since discovering it on yelp. Excellent prices, but not much in the way of labels or signs except for prices. So you have to ask, or be adventurous, or both. The person at the register usually speaks English, the others, only a little. I buy live seafood, fish - cleaned and scaled, shrimp, crabs, clams, etc and have been very pleased. Do make sure your crabs are alive and have both claws. When the live shrimp are in stock, try them. Almost all shrimp we get in the US were frozen a long time ago. The fresh ones are great, and the price here is the lowest I've seen. Excellent prices on a limited selection of fresh produce too. There's another market next door with a bigger selection if you need sauces, meat, etc. Very convenient parking. Remember, cash only. That's the reason for not getting 5 stars. The bags of oysters are sometimes a hit or miss... there's no in between. We've gotten HUGE ones and "lil asian" ones ( I know I'm so wrong :P) out of those bags... One time my mom asked the lady if they were big oysters in the bag she picked and her response was "I don't know, I didn't grow them!" LOL she had a point...the 3 of us just laughed. I just got 4 live crab, about 8 lbs, for 3.69/lb, so it was about 25.00 to feed me and my 3 friends. I consider that a good deal after reading some Talk threads. I never used to pay attention to crab prices, so I had to check! Truth be told, I'm not sure what kind they even are, or where the hell they came from. I guess that's what the yuppies like about Whole Foods? This is a real deal seafood market that I was able to bike to today. I did a reconnaissance mission earlier in the day to see if they were open during the holiday and came back with my shopping bag later, ready for action! It's true you have an advantage if you speak the language, because one of the crab I got was sort of messed up looking, Dang Soldier, it must be tough out there! But all of them had their legs in tact, I didn't sense any ill will or trickery here on the part of the fish mongers. The now cooked crab are chilling in the fridge prior to my feast, but I nibbled on a few legs, and they are GOOD! Advice, if someone helps you be insistent they show you everything is alive. I've been in a hurry and had the crab grabber toss a clearly dead crab in my bag. I found this place through yelp - What a FIND!! I'm not a regular of fish markets and my eyes were as big as pies when I first walked in. They had huge tanks full of crabs and fish (don't know what kind of fish - but lots of them). I did like I read and just held up two fingers to tell the "crab guy" how many crabs I wanted to take home with me. After he pulled out two crab and put them into a bag, I brought them to the cashier. When she told me my total was $18, I just about fainted!! I couldn't believe what a steal that was! She then directed me to the "butchers" who would clean the crab for me to take home. Keep in mind, that he doesn't clean the crabs like they do in the store ... I pulled a few lungs off after I brought them home and cooked them. I'll be back here next time I need some fresh fish! read more

I went there a couple weeks ago and got crab for $2.39... so go away. I know why I come here. If you don't like it, go to 99 Ranch for $3.99/lb, or some other big block store for $4.99 or more. The oysters are always fresh and delicious, whether you're looking for the big oysters to throw on the grill or the small ones to shuck and eat raw. They have live fish and their shell fish are always live and kickin which proves its a great place to get your seafood fresh. And the prices are very reasonable. Another plus to Lucky Seafood is it's not located in crowded Chinatown, so if you're looking for a place to get your fish and get out, this is the place to go. Whenever I think seafood, Lucky Seafood always comes to mind first. One warning I do have is that when you enter the store, roll your pants up otherwise you might get the bottom of your pants wet from the fish water. read more

Just called this place to see if they have any wild Calif salmon, which is in season now. The guy says I have Atlantic salmon. I say, well that's not wild nor California. He insists yes it is wild. I ask him what state it is from and he cannot tell me. Bottom line....there is no wild Atlantic salmon, and obviously Atlantic salmon is not from California. For years, we've used "12th & 12th" as our go-to place for fresh crab. They most predictably have it and the price is always less than more upscale places. Nope, not chi-chi. Today aftyer buying 3 crabs, about 7lbs total, I weighed the wet paper bag and outer bag they came in after taking them out. Including water that didn't drip off the beasts and maybe oozed out of them during the trip home, there was about 7oz that we'd paid $6.69/lb for, or about a 45¢/lb extra cost. Worst case? YMMV. This doesn't exactly seem up to CA standard for weight of goods but we'll keep shopping there--it still seems like a decent price & we DO love them roasted w garlic, herbs, oil & salt. read more

Their seafood is cheaper and sometimes fresher than other places by a few cents per lb. However, I wouldn't say the workers there are helpful or friendly. Instead, they often will give you bad seafood if you're not careful. I let one of the employee pick out a few crabs for me, all three times he deliberately picked out crabs that were dead or clawless. Make sure you asked to see your seafood first, don't let the workers pick it for you. Insist that you must see the seafood before they bag it. read more

This is the go to spot for fresh seafood in Oakland, but please leave manners at the door or you will find yourself being bullied around by those older little asian ladies. They have all the basics like fish, shrimp, shell fish, lobster; then theres the more unsual if your not familiar with asian cuisine such as geoduck and some soft turtle looking thing. Went here twice in ONE day!! Needed crabs for gumbo (on Christmas Eve), they had the best deal in town. Great sizes, just make sure they all have there legs. I would suggest wearing rain boots, the floor was slopping wet with water...there are tanks all round with fish and other sea creatures. Don't come here expected "grocery store" customer service but they won't be rude to you either. They provide quick service, especially the second time (first time, the line was out the door in the back) because I was standing around like a lost pup. I was in and out like a bandit. read more

Am i paying for water and bags for the price of the shrimp? Common man, shrimp cost 27.99lbs. They put the plastic bag outside the paper bag then put your water soaked shrimp in. Even you pour out the water but most of it already soak into the brown paper bag. I have been craving sand dabs, a childhood favorite. I can't find them anywhere. So I yelped Seafood Market and found Lucky's. Trekked over there this AM and guess what .....Sand Dabs. Bought 2 and the fish monger cleaned and prepped them for dinner. Can't wait. You walk into an array of fish on ice. There are also tanks of lobsters and clams and live fish. The fish mongers might not speak English but were attentive and helpful. The cashier was multi tasking ringing up two customers up at a time whipping through the line of customers. Bought fresh ling cod ($3.99 lb), pacific salmon ($4.99 lb) and some sturgeon ($5.99 lb) Quality / price is incredibly satisfying Giving it 4+ (cons: cash only, hard to communicate to the store butcher, could be cleaner) Overall, will be back soon.
