This is the first meal I had in San Juan, and it was a little underwhelming. The service was great, food was a little pricey but as expected in a touristy area. Pina Colada was the star of the show, amazing, rejuvenating, refreshing pina colada. The special sampler left a bit more to be desired. Most of the things were good but some items on the plate were slacking in flavor and were carried by other elements of the dish like the empanadas were amazing.
Honestly, was a bit disappointed with the piña coladas here. We added it as a must do on our trip since it's the inventors of the piña colada but they just seem like the ordinary piñas you get on beach vacations. They don't make each one fresh it's already made and just poured. A bit too icy with no unique flavors for my taste. I feel I've had better ones at resorts. It's definitely popular and you can take the drinks to go rather wait in line to be seated. If you want to check off a historic "landmark" then visit otherwise if you want to go for a good piña, I'd go elsewhere.
We stopped by Barrachina because of it's legacy as the "birthplace of the piña colada." We got coladas as well as some calamari for the table. The coladas were very strong (I think all the rum was all at the bottom), but it tasted great. Calamari tasted fine as well. Definetely more of a touristy spot but enjoying the outdoor seating while sipping on coladas was a nice experience. Service was very fast, considering how busy it was when we got there in the mid-afternoon.
This is such a beautiful restaurant and located in a nice area in old San Juan Puerto Rico. Stopped by after having lunch at Raices and wish i wouldn't have. I wish i would have planned to eat here and another day at raices as the food looked really good. However we came for the Piña Colada and it was good. I will def be returning
A San Juan tourist MUST DO! Barrachina is where the piña colada was invented and originated from. It is a restaurant as well as a bar with vibrant energy. We stopped by for a quick midday refreshing drink. The piña colada's were strong and tasty! I would be definitely interested in returning for a meal here. The bartender is super direct and friendly and gave some good local recommendations in the area. A very fun stop while exploring San Juan.
Came here of course to try the famous original pina colada! It was good - but definitely not as sweet or creamy as I am used to for a pina colada (i know i know this is the original!) If you are lucky to get a seat, the patio has a beautiful natural aesthetic, the inside is much more simple. I would recommend grabbing to go since it is busy. Service was nice!
Home of the original piña colada, Barrachina is a must visit in San Juan! We decided to stop by for an app and drinks on a Friday and had to wait 30 minutes to be seated. We all ordered piña coladas and the corn fritters to share. The fritters were delicious! Perfectly sweet with a tasty spicy sauce on the side. The piña colada's were strong and refreshing! Definitely worth a try!
We walked in and were seated right away! Great service, our waiter was amazing! Very helpful with our questions. The food was delicious, we got the stuffed plantains with shrimp I believe. My friend got the chicken Caesar salad and I got the grouper fillet with shrimp. It wasn't too busy, they have a dining seating area and a bar area, overall we had a good experience and the food was filling and amazing! I love PR
While in PR, everyone suggest doing Barrachina to try the original Pina Colada ( or they say) and it is actually delicious and comes with a souvenir glass for $12.95. The surprising part is the food is actually delicious. We ordered numerous appetizers. The long line is mainly tourist and it's kind of weird the way the line is ran and how you are seated but once inside you will enjoy delicious Puerto Rican food. The wings were crispy and outstanding, the cheese croquets are solid. The plantains were pretty good. They could use a little more seasoning in my opinion. The mofongo was outstanding. Neat atmosphere as they had a man playing guitar table side ( of course for tips) The service was pretty good. Nice friendly waitress. Overall a pretty good experience to checkout , not just for the Pina Colada. Overall a nice 7.8 out of 10
The food here was pretty tasty i got the can can pork chop and it was huge which i didnt expect but still delicious. With the sides it tasted greet i just kinda wish it had a some sort of sauce. You also must order a piña colada when your there they were very good as well. My friends got the mahi mahi filet but it tasted a little rubbery .

Came here for the piña colada's and stayed for the beautiful scenery!! I'm not normally a fish person, but the red snapper that my friend and I both ordered was really good!! It was flavorful and had a good amount of meat on it! read more
We heard Barrachina was the birthplace of the piña colada so stopped in while we were walking around Old San Juan. Naturally, it's very touristy. We sat at the outdoor bar in the courtyard, which was very nice! There were several frozen cocktail machines with piña coladas stirring. The bartender assured us that their piña coladas are never watered down with ice. Honestly, it was really good (and he made them strong!) However, your drink is definitely dependent on the bartender that helps you so can certainly be hit or miss. We weren't super inclined to try the food or sit inside. Definitely worth trying while in Old San Juan. You can even get a piña colada to go. read more

Skirt steak mofongo! Excellent flavors like carne asada burrito, but with thick mofongo which is fried green plantains with garlic, salt, chiccaronnes and olive oil. It's thick and I could not finish it. Great location on forteza in an old late colonial building. read more

The home of the original Pina Colada's est:1963. Great courtyard bar area to try one of the best Pina Colada's in San Juan PR old town district.. I ate here also and the food was a 3-4 stars.. the draw to this place is definitely their Pina Colada's read more

A classic staple in old san Juan. Some may say it's a tourist trap as many go due to it being the birthplace of pina coladas however I believe the food is really good. I tried the sweet plantain boat with shrimp that comes with rice and beans and everything was delicious. The piña coladas were delicious too and our server was very nice. Also the chuleta was mind blowingly large and delicious! read more
Stopped in for the famous frozen piña colada. We ordered one to share then quickly realized we needed one each at least. The bartender was wonderful. Told us what to order for lunch (fish and shrimp creole) and it was wonderful. read more

Service was friendly & welcoming. Server was great at explaining the menu. The pina coladas were awesome as well as very reasonable. Well worth our visit. We went in the early afternoon & seated immediately. We did not feel like it was a tourist trap at all. Highly recommend. read more

The hostess was not friendly. We were sat quickly. The waitress was friendly (until it came to tip time). If you're coming from the states, do not expect the same service as in the states. We weren't checked on. The food was very mediocre. Fun to go to the "birthplace" of the Pina colada, but other than that it is nothing special. They do have a luggage drop area which is nice. read more
You put your name on a list and they tell you how long you have. We got back a little early and they took us early, which was nice. They were busy and seemed to run like a well oiled machine. I think they have the piña colada on a slush machine because they were cranking those out quick. The food was good, the service was quick, the place was clean. read more
Yes, we were tourists. I wanted a Piña Colada from the place it was created. It was delicious! Available without alcohol, too. We also ate lunch. Great service! I also tried mofongo for the first time. I got it with chicken. Very tasty! Hubby had grouper fingers and fries. It's very tropical inside. read more
Stopped in after a local tour guide recommended this place for the original Pina Coladas. The two of us waited about 10 minutes before being seated at the bar and ordered our drinks. The pina coladas were excellent however, the food was meh. We ordered the chicken wings and the grouper appetizers which I would not order again. Overall a good experience as a tourist but wouldn't return for the food. read more
Really friendly service. Our waiters were attentive and good personalities The pina colada was ehhh. Very watered down and not as sweet and refreshing has I've had pina in other places. My grouper was tasteful with the sweet plantain and frijo for the rice. Though the rice seemed very undercooked/ hard. But grouper had good taste. read more

We came here at 10:50am to get in line and there was a sizable line forming outside the door. When cruise ships are in town this is pretty common. Do not let the line stop you from coming it moves very quickly and the inside is much larger than it appears. Also there are two lines one for the restaurant and if you just want a pina colada to go. Also if you are willing to sit at the bar can bypass the line. When coming, you obviously have to get a pina colada. I do not drink alcohol, but we got the virgin version, my wife got the alcoholic version and said it was the best pina colada she has ever had. Mine tasted like a dessert fresh pineapple and coconut can be tasted in every sip. In addition do not miss out on the authentic Puerto Rican food here. I ordered the fried pork and it was the biggest serving I have had in my life. The meat close the bone was perfectly tender even though the pork is fried. As you get away from the bone you get perfect crispy pieces of what is basically like a pork belly and chicharron, definitely a must try if you have not had pork cooked this way. The fried red snapper was crispy tender and flavorful. My wife devoured every piece of that fish really tasty. The grouper melted in your mouth love the garlic butter flavor. The rice also comes with a side of beans that compliments the rice really well. My son was less adventurous but the chicken Cesar salad looked really good for the price. This may be a tourist hot spot but the food doesn't disappoint. read more

Por supuesto, teníamos que pedir la piña colada original--estaba deliciosa y muy refrescante. También probamos el mofongo, ya que era nuestra primera vez. Estuvo bueno, aunque no fue nuestro platillo favorito. Los meseros fueron muy amables y atentos, lo cual hizo la experiencia aún mejor. En general, Barrachina es una gran parada para disfrutar de unas bebidas y una experiencia clásica de la gastronomía puertorriqueña en el Viejo San Juan. After walking around Old San Juan for a few hours, we stopped into Barrachina and luckily got seated right before the rush. Of course, we had to order their famous original Piña Coladas--they were absolutely delicious and refreshing. Since we were there, we also tried the mofongo. It was our first time having it, and while it was good, it wasn't really our favorite dish. The waiters were very nice and friendly, which made the experience even better. Overall, Barrachina is a great stop for drinks and a classic Puerto Rican dining experience in Old San Juan. read more
Came here as it was mentioned as the home of the creation of the Pina Colada drink here in San Juan. It was a 10 minute walk from the cruise port. It is located in a hotel. The best way to get here is to put the name in Google Maps and go from there. When we entered, there was a line, but we found out that line was to get a table; if you wanted your drink to go or to sit at the bar, you could bypass the line and go right to the bar to order. The ambiance was nice and tropical; the bar was located in an open patio area with outside tables for restaurant patrons only. (TIP: Don't sit at those tables unless you reserved one at the line at the entrance of the area). The bar was small with seating for around 10. This was a first come first serve seating area. We went to the bar to order our drink. The line was at the end of the bar and it was quite long. I waited at the bar while hubby got in line to order our drinks. While he was in line, a few seats came open and I grabbed those for us. The servers were a bit cold at first, but warmed up as we asked questions about the origins of the drink. We got our drinks in souvenir cups, which costs around $15 each. You could get a drink in the small plastic to go cup for $7. What I was not anticipating was the drink coming out of an industrial size smoothie machine. I was expecting a hand made drink more in line with the traditional preparation, but it was not to be. We watched the servers make every drink; each cup was placed under the nozzle of the smoothie machine, filled up then topped with a float of rum and decorated with a paper umbrella. I must admit, that did take some of the spark out of my expectations. The pina colada had a nice taste, with a heavy taste of pineapple, which I enjoyed. Although it came out of a smoothie machine, it was cold and refreshing with a hint of the rum floater, perfect for that hot San Juan day. All in all, a nice drink and experience. Would I visit again, probably not; it was definitely a one and done for me, but if you're in the area and would like a drink from the original place where it was created, half at it! read more
Stopped here to try the OG Piña Colada and surprise, surprise: it was delicious! I can see why every other country quickly tried (and failed) to replicate it. Set inside a beautiful outdoor space, this is a perfect place to cool off from the Puerto Rican sun with good friends and good service. read more
Thursday. June 19, 2025. Afternoon. This restaurant was recommended by the ranger at the National Park Castillo San Cristobal. He told us it was the birthplace of the Pina Colada. Needless to say, we had to try it. There's a plaque in front of the restaurant proclaiming it as the birthplace of the Pina colada, in 1963, by Don Ramon Portas Mingot. We were a bit parched after exploring downtown San Juan and were put on a waiting list for sitting at the bar. We waited about ten minutes. It's a lovely, open air bar in a large courtyard. The "to-go" drink line seemed endless. Bartender told us it wasn't even that busy. I was a bit disappointed to see the Pina Coladas were inside a slushie machine. No longer hand made, though they do add alcohol by hand to the premade frozen concoction. However, with the amount of customers they had, I don't think they could keep up with demand if they still hand made these drinks. Needless to say, the ice cold mix was creamy, buttery and smooth with no ice chunks. They add Don Q gold rum, and a generous portion at that. The umbrellas and cherries were a very nice touch. We ended up ordering 4 of these drinks, for a very reasonable $8.96 each. On top of the coladas, I ordered a double Mojito. Our very busy waiter, B. Negron, made this by hand. Very powerful, with lots of mint and not overly sweet, $14. A very strong mojito! A great place to sit, contemplate life and feel great after a couple of Pina Coladas. Note: they do charge a 10.5% bar (IVU) fee to sit at the bar, $5.24. read more
I came here to try out there infamous pina coladas... we came in the late morning/ early afternoon. The line was almost out the door. My only interaction was with the hostess whom seem to be a lil flustered with the line... But the pina coladas are amazing and when I'm back in town I'll for sure stop for one every time... read more
I was in Puerto Rico with my girlfriend recently and this place was definitely on our list of places to go and especially considering how much we both love piña coladas and with them being one of two places in PR who claim to have invented it we had to see which one was better. We strolled in late one evening but soon came to find out that they were about to close but they said we could go to the bar and get a couple to go. So we walked up to the bar and tried to order two piña coladas but the bartender wasn't paying attention to us so I was like, Hey!(loudly) to get her attention and said, We'd like to order some drinks to go. She seemed angry and was rude. So she showed us both sizes and told us the price of them. So we chose and ordered. She poured our drinks and handed them to us and my gf gave her the CC and signed the bill. We went to walk away when I looked at the receipt. I said, she overcharged us by a lot hoping we wouldn't notice it since we were leaving and sadly after telling us the price to our faces. I told my gf since she used her card and we walked back in to tell her. She said, Oh, I'm sorry I made a mistake. Umm, no you didn't. Smdh! She refunded us and we left. Regardless of that crappy situation I will say the atmosphere was very nice inside and outside. I wish we would have got there earlier so we could have experienced this place more and enjoyed their food too. The piña colada was very good, but not as good as the one at the Hilton Caribe(my opinion). It is more liquidy than creamy and tasted more pineappilly(not a word) lol Either way it was still very good and I'll definitely be coming back to have more the next time we are in San Juan, but hoping the rude bartender won't be working this time. We ordered the half appetizer sampler & garlic shrimp. Everything was very good. The garlic shrimp and empanadas were standouts. Grouper fritters were great too. Everything was great, even the stuffed plantains. Javier provided excellent service. I think we had gotten the best waiter. The only downside is the hoard or tourists. You must get here at least fifteen minutes before opening to avoid the lines. I almost forgot the piña coladas. Supposedly, this is the birthplace of the drink, and they are indeed fantastic here. read more

I was a little nervous based off the reviews because our dining experiences thus far have been exceptional. But while we did have to wait and the server forgot my order (she was sweet so I didn't mind), the food was 100% worth the wait! It's a little touristy but a must stop for the "home of the Pina colada". I had the salmon which was excellent. My husband and in laws had the skirt steak which they said was really good. The kitchen also had an off menu kid meal - chicken fingers and fries. All in all, it was a tasty experience - and for a reasonable price. Edited to say- like most businesses here, there are not much in the way of vegetarian options - and definitely no vegan - so I had fish. The server assured me the beans were not cooked in beef or pork. read more
