Went with Lopez Landscaping since they had the smaller equipment and manpower to get the job done. The tree was quickly removed but it was a 3 star maybe 3.5 star experience because of the additional work needed to coordinate everything. The good: - competitive quote and they were able to come by quickly to assess the work - flexible in bringing equipment that worked with tight openings - main tree removal was done in 5 hours - removed paver stones so they wouldn't be damaged by machinery - friendly and professional. They accommodated a special request to cut a section for a table The bad: - rescheduling was a huge pain. We had to go back and forth for 3 weeks and I had to proactively follow up to confirm if they were coming - unable to grind the stump as part of the initial quote so had to pay another $400 for them to come back with a different machine - never got an invoice despite asking for one multiple times To summarize, this seems to be a nice family business that has experience removing trees quickly. However, it doesn't appear there is a back office that keeps everything organized so you're going to have to do a lot of work to stay on top of things.

Appointments scheduled a week in advance would still end up being hours late. If I didn't remind him the day before, there was a good chance he would simply forget, with no heads-up, no apology, and no communication whatsoever. I own a design-build company, so I understand what it's like to be busy. We're constantly juggling multiple projects, but we still show up when we say we will. Being busy is not an excuse for wasting other people's time. Yesterday was the second time he completely no-showed for a confirmed appointment. We had scheduled it days in advance, yet there was no phone call, no text message, nothing. I drove 40 minutes to the job site, waited another 30 minutes, then drove 40 minutes back home--for absolutely nothing. That's nearly two hours of my day wasted because he couldn't even send a 10-second text. This wasn't an isolated incident. It became a pattern of missed commitments, poor communication, and complete disregard for other people's time. If someone can't be trusted to show up for a simple appointment, I wouldn't trust them with an actual project. I can no longer recommend this company. Save yourself the frustration and hire one of the many other landscaping companies that actually communicates, keeps appointments, and respects their customers' time.

Our contract specifically stated that we were not required to hire the company to perform the installation work and that the designer would revise the design based on our feedback. The designer visited the property, evaluated the site, and later scheduled a Zoom meeting to present the design. During the meeting, the company owner joined the call. After the designer finished presenting the plan, I started to provide my first piece of feedback but the owner cut me off before I could finish and stated that the design phase was complete and that I would need to hire the company to perform the installation if I wanted any changes made. The interaction was unexpected and inconsistent with my understanding of the contract. The designer appeared uncomfortable, and I found the owner's tone rude, unfriendly, and intimidating. What should have been a collaborative discussion about minor revisions became an unpleasant experience.

A couple of months later, right after Thanksgiving, we were the proud owners of a beautifully landscaped yard. I will admit that I was dubious about putting in all those mature plantings at that time of the year but Jeremy assured us that they would be fine and he was right--we had an amazing Spring of blooms and the excitement of experiencing new plants appearing in the yard. The quality of work and attention to detail caused us to go back to The Narrow Lane again last Spring to do a total renovation and redesign of our back yard. While we were impressed by the quality of work and attentiveness to detail that we experienced with the first project we were absolutely blown away with what Jeremy, Matt, and The Narrow Lane were able to deliver for the backyard. It is truly a work of art and we are so happy that not only did we re-engage with The Narrow Lane for this project but that we gave them complete control over the design and implementation. Neighbors now stop by to explore the yard and we are known in the area as "that house with the amazing landscaping". Based on these landscaping experiences over the past year we have now also contracted with The Narrow Lane to maintain the gardens and yard during the growing season as well as to provide us with snowplowing and shoveling in the winter. I will admit that they are not inexpensive to work with but the prices are totally justified by the quality of work, the care and attention that they have brought to everything that they do, and their continuing care that they bring to our property. We have found everyone from the company that we have engaged with to be consummate professionals that bring a new level of care and respect to the properties they take on as projects. If you are looking for an exciting and complete re-imagination of your property and then professionals to maintain it throughout the year you can't do better than The Narrow Lane.

Second week in July, when the work was scheduled, she wrote to say David was backing out of his commitment altogether, due to being "overwhelmed with catching up on pre-scheduled projects and ongoing maintenance accounts." Very disappointing and unprofessional. At this point, it will be difficult for us to find a gardener who is not already fully booked.

We give Barrett Tree Service East the highest recommendation possible. My husband and I had several estimates for work to be done on 4 large trees in our yard, including 3 Norway maples and a Hemlock. The largest of the Norway maples is a huge magnificent shade tree, leaves golden in the fall. Barrett's goal was ours: to save the trees. The other companies preferred to cut the trees down. When they were finished mid-day, the trees were beautifully shaped--even the one which formerly had a dead piece at the top of the trunk. These arborists work as artists. This work was done on January 28th after a blizzard. We had 4 ft of snow in the backyard. We thought they would cancel but they reassured us they would be there but would keep us informed. They came right on time.The crew quickly shoveled pathways into the yard to get to the trees and did a beautiful job cutting and removing dead wood and the many branches. There was no debris left when they were finished. How such great work happened with no mishaps under such snowy conditions is unbelievable. Terry Peck, who headed the crew, kept me informed as they went to make sure I was satisfied with the distance tree branches were cut back from the house. He handled the cherry picker deftly in the midst of the snow. He and his crew, Cornelio Perez and Orlando Range, worked together seamlessly and they were pleasant, so good-humored--in that frigid weather. We were homeowners for the first time learning what we needed to know about tree and yard management. Keith Bernard came out to the house to give the estimate. He is extremely knowledgeable, creative, and shares what he knows easily and clearly. He sent us a plan of what could be done. With so many expenses associated with our move, we weren't able to do all that was in the plan. To our amazement, this didn't phase him a bit. He broke the project up into phases and told us what would be best to do right away. That was within our budget so we proceeded. Courtney Fowler Peck and Office Manager, Jennifer Conaway, who manage the business side have been nothing but helpful. Communication is great: clear, prompt, as well as amiable. Invoices are detailed and informative. We will continue to use Barrett Tree Service East. They are coming back soon to treat the hemlock. read more

The crew of four arborists from Barrett Tree service came to cut down a large, thick tree (higher than a 3-story house) in my East Boston back yard yesterday and did a great job! I first learned about this company on yelp and called them along with three other tree cutting services. They responded immediately and were extremely professional both on the phone and via email. The other companies I called either didn't call back or played phone tag without making enough effort to really connect. Two companies said they would send me estimates if I emailed them photos of the tree, which I did. But they never called or emailed me back, even when I sent follow-up emails and calls. But John and Alden from Barrett Tree Service were so efficient and professional in quickly getting me an estimate and explaining the process and cost, that I instantly trusted them. The team, led by Henry, arrived on time and, since my house is in a tightly packed inner city neighborhood with no driveway and tiny alleyways between the houses, they couldn't use a bucket truck to get to the tree, but had to climb it by hand. This was on a 15 degree day in the middle of the brutal freezing cold spell in early January! But the crew was nothing but cheerful, polite and helpful in every way. They cleaned up the branches afterwards, even raking the snow on the sidewalk to leave it neat. I was very pleased with them and would definitely recommend them to anyone looking to get rid of a tree. read more

Barrett Tree Service was excellent from start to finish. Trumbull showed up for the estimate when he said he would. Personable, knowledgeable and professional. Handed me his business card right off. Walked through the tree area and he used a laser pointer on the trees to show me what he was recommending based on my requests. Proposal was in great detail. Gave me the estimate on the spot. Scheduling was also efficient and professional. When the crew arrived, they too, were completely professional, highly skilled and concerned about safety; for themselves, the trees, plants, and my house. They managed to cut down quite a few branches and limbs, some of them quite large, without damaging any of my plants. And the clean-up was spotless. They even managed to get their large truck with the cherry picker in my very narrow driveway without hitting the gate! We did a walk through after and I was totally pleased with the service and results. Plus they were less expensive than two other companies from which I got bids. Barrett Tree Service was everything I expected and more. When I called to set up an appointment for an estimate I was told that it would be a few weeks before Trumbull Barrett could come out to give me an estimate. I had read great reviews and I was willing to wait. Trumball was on time, very professional, very thorough and knowledgeable. He also took a look around and made a suggestion regarding a tree that may pose a problem in the future. He provided an insurance certificate upon request, found he was a certified arborist, and answered all my emails in a timely manner due to my several questions. He was very careful and thoughtful regarding trimming neighbors trees that were overhanging into our property. The day of the cutting he and his crew arrived on time. They were all very nice and got to work immediately. We had two large pines and 3 smaller pines removed. All of the trunks were grinded. He trimmed trees in two of the abutting properties. They had everything mulched and cleaned and were done in about two hours. My husband and I would highly recommend them. Thank you Trumbull!!!! Work was done in Somerville. read more

Barrett Tree Service East just removed several trees from our yard and I would recommend them to anyone. I selected BTSE based on Yelp reviews and did not pursue any other quotes after meeting Trumbull. He showed up right on time to look at the yard and we received our quote right away the next day. The price seemed very reasonable considering the amount of work. Trumbull's crew was also very punctual and did a phenomenal job. Despite the extremely wet weather, there was minimal damage to our yard in terms of tire tracks, etc. And they did a fabulous job with the clean up. The yard is spotless which is amazing considering 9 trees were removed and 2 were trimmed. We had the stumps and roots of the removed trees ground out and the crew raked and graded the entire area very nicely. One would not even know that we had a black cherry tree in the front yard and we can just spread grass seed in the backyard where the bulk of the trees were removed! Again, we cannot recommend them enough and would definitely use them again ourselves! read more

Very responsive to request for proposal and estimate; Keith was friendly, articulate and knowledgeable. Proposal was properly detailed. Day-of crew also friendly and head of crew provided a good walk-around of property prior to beginning work. Overall, in both first meeting and day-of work, instilled a high degree of confidence and comfort. Cost was in-line with other service provider proposals. Based on original responsiveness of first meeting and delivering proposal, there was an unexpected delay in my minor follow-up questions and scheduling which required several follow-up emails and calls. But when I was running up against my deadline, they got out here really quickly and in time. And, honestly, the whole process (from my first inquiring phone call to the actual work) was quicker than anyone else just providing a proposal and quicker than many service providers just returning the call! Overall, very happy with results and plan to use for the second phase of my project in the Fall. read more

We generally don't hire contractors for anything (in fact, my boyfriend hates them), but there were 2 stumps that we really couldn't handle on our own. I called Trumbull for an estimate and he called back later that day. I couldn't be there for the estimate and was a little apprehensive about leaving my boyfriend to do it. But when I came home and asked how it went... he admitted that Trumbull was "awesome". He was knowledgeable, gave other suggestions and they agreed to grind the stumps, thin the lilacs, and remove a couple other small trees/stumps. He said that Trumbull was very nice and not what he expected from a tree service. The day of, they showed up early and finished the job in half the time (under 2 hours). Trumbull was very nice and introduced me to the crew and walked through the yard together before they got started. They left the yard clean and the cost was just under the estimate (albeit a little expensive, but worth the service). Highly recommended. read more

We live in the South End of Boston where parking is tenuous, at best. So we decided to have a 40 foot tree removed in the alley to convert back yard space to parking. After calling several other arborist in the Boston area and receiving zero call backs, I found BTSE's number and called. They came out within a week to estimate the job and two weeks later were there, on time with everything they needed to complete the job. The guys were extremely professional and had the tree down incredibly fast. They chopped all the debris and ground the stump, plus two smaller stumps of trees we had removed ourselves. I cannot say enough good things about this company. The cost of the job was very reasonable for all the work they did. I found Barrett Tree Service on Angie's List (all A rating - which is rare) - I always do my due diligence (getting 3-4 quotes / reading reviews / feeling out the contractor). Trumbull was the 1st guy to come out and give me a quote and I immediately felt a sense of respect/workmanship in his character. His price was extremely reasonable for the work performed and his crew 1) showed up early 2) introduced themselves 3) went over/described the work which was agreed upon in the contract 4) described how they would tackle the 4 trees 5) performed the work in a safe/efficient manner and 6) cleaned up!!. I do numerous home renovations and finding a honest/trustworthy contractor is tough to come by. I would highly recommend Barrett Tree Service...I am certainly going to use them in the future... read more

Trumbell came by on time to take a look at the work we were thinking of doing and shared a lot of information about our options and how the work would be done. Quote given on the spot, and it was less than the other quote I got. Date and time of work arranged over email. Electrical company came by to cover the lines a week before and the city set up no parking signs a few days in advance. The crew arrived on time, introduced themselves and the project leader went over every aspect of the work. They did the job efficiently and expertly. Barrett Tree Service removed a large white pine from the front yard of our house in Somerville. Trumbull gave a good proposal, with very good attention to detail, which is why we went with Barrett Tree (the tight confines of our front yard meant that there was plenty of things that could have gone wrong). The crew showed up on time, set up carefully and finished the entire job in under 4 hours. The locations for the trucks was very tight, but the crew got everything in place without a hitch. The tree came down without a problem (despite power lines, other trees, fence and other obstacles) and the crew left the site very clean. Barrett quickly came to do a thorough walk-through of my overgrown yard and made recommendations about what work should be done (removing dead trees and branches, reducing crowding for the long-term health of remaining trees, and pruning) and promptly returned a very reasonable estimate for the work. We had several estimates to take down two trees in our back yard and Barrett's price was very fair. The arborist who gave us the estimate was knowledgeable and friendly. He gave me some free advice on how to help my Japanese maple and explained why branches in my neighbors yard were going to break due to their tree being weakened by poor trimming (2 large branches broke off in the wind only 2 weeks later!). They made time for us within a week of the estimate. The crew was fast, neat and respectful of our wishes not to have a heavy truck parked in a newly paved driveway and being careful with our neighbors' properties. We have been working with Barrett Tree service since the fall of 2018. They inventoried our existing trees and hedge; gave suggestions on pruning to restore shape and health; identified trees that should be replaced and provided recommendations as to which trees would work well in our yard. Alden and the team are responsive and deliver upon their commitments. Follow-up has been great and during a particularly hot spell this summer, when we were out of time, they swung by to make sure the new trees had enough water. We have been working with Trumbull Barrett since 2012. The company services all our trees on the property. They are a full service with an expert crew and office staff. Each year we walk the property with Trumbull in late summer, and he provides us with a detailed proposal of what need to be done and when to do it. They are top-notch and professional. Couldn't be happier with their work. Barrett pruned back a large maple, walnut and elm to get branches away from our roof, and did some very artful pruning of a hemlock, weeping cherries, birch trees, and holly bushes. This was in a heavily wooded area, so it was not easy work -- these trees had to be taken down carefully from the top down, with real skill and judgment. Because this is protected land, care and expertise mattered a lot to us, and Palmer's crew absolutely delivered. BEWARE: This guy, Edras, plays a lot of games. He comes and looks at the job and throws an…read moreestimate at you but refuses to put it in writing. He uses vague language as to what exactly the scope of his work will cover. I tried multiple times, but failed to get him to spell out whether his price included what I had asked him to do. He throws in a "base price" at you for "what HE wants to do" but not what YOU asked him to do; then he wants to charge you extra for this and extra for that. Don't waste your time. Tree service companies are dime a dozen and there's no need to deal with unethical people.
