My family and I have visited almost every Barrio Queen near us, we visits the Avondale location today for my daughters bday, we reserved a table and upon arrival the hostess greeted me by name and walked us over to our table. No wait. He also checked with me before walking away if the table was okay with me, which it was. The server's name was Alexander and let me tell you, he's one of the best server's I've encountered. While we were a big party he continually checked on us, refilled our drinks, conversed, made jokes. I mean you name it, he did it. He was very attentive when taking our orders and made sure my picky kids received what they wanted. I truly appreciate his friendly demeanor he made my daughters birthday very pleasant. The food came promptly and was delicious, we also had the nachos from the appetizer menu, we had the elote fries and some drinks; the barrio Paloma which is good but BARRIO QUEEN: please use a bigger cup for this, come on! The Mangoneada was refreshing, my husband also had the spiked horchata cold brew and he said it was delicious. As you can tell, we ate A LOT! Had a great time. read more

A friend of ours hyped this place up so much for their drinks and food, but the only really good thing about this restaurant was their cóctel de elote. Everything else was mediocre at best, except for the Torta, the meat was dry as bone. Expected the margarita flight to be the highlight on a date night, but honestly two of the margaritas felt like they were missing either the simple syrup, or tequila. Did have to send back the jalapeño Margarita. Service was lacking as well, it really seemed like the servers and the hostess did not want to be there, and it just killed the mood for the night. I really wanted to just finish up and leave. Will not be returning, the first impression told me all I needed to know. read more

Spontaneously arrived to this location last week during happy hour, on a night off from work. It was quite empty inside, but the music was loud and upbeat. We decided to give it a try. We were greeted with water and served endless chips and salsa without request. As for what we got off the happy hour menu, I'd have to say that we enjoyed the $5 Nachitos off of the appetizer list, the most -- beyond flavorful. As for drinks, we could not get enough of the Reina Sangria! The only real downside was the service. We were in a much better mood than our waitress seemed to be that night. read more

This place was sooo packed. Which is normal for west side. The atmosphere was lively and what you'd expect. It's new to the neighborhood so even more reason to be packed. However, I expected better food. We order an appetizer and two entrès. It was bland. So bland. I won't give any more stars for that very reason. The food was flavorless and did not live up to hype. I will give it another chance but I've had better burritos from chains like macayos or Manuel's We'll see how it goes next time and I will update review. Im giving it two stars but after I finish my review, that's subject to change. I came for lunch on a Friday. It was at about 50% capacity. I was quickly greeted and seated. It's airy and there's a lot of natural light, but the decor is subpar if you ask me. They could've done better, especially trying to present it as this hip Mexican restaurant. I sat at a table near the opening to the kitchen(although I couldn't see much). It took several moments before my server came to the table. She arrived with chips and salsa and asked if water was good to start with. I didn't order any alcoholic beverages. the chips were hot and fresh and the salsa was great! She was fairly attentive throughout my meal. I browsed the menu. It does seem to be a bit over priced for the food being served. I ordered the suiza enchiladas. Entrees are served with black beans and calbacitas (sautéed veggies). I ordered my entree and it came out 5 minutes later. Literally 5 minutes. My enchiladas were shredded chicken with melted Oaxaca cheese and green Chile sauce. The beans were super bland. Like I'm not Mexican and my beans at home taste way better than that! The green sauce consumed the plate. I mean I get it but I don't. Nah, I don't understand why that is lol. The chorizo served on top of the enchiladas was dry and pointless lol. It didn't add any additional flavor. In my opinion anyways. I packaged my two remaining enchiladas and beans but I'm not sure it'll get eaten as leftovers. So my two Stars still stand. read more

I've been here before, but I thought I would take my teenagers this time. The service wasn't the best. It took forever for the waitress to come back to take our order. I was a bit frustrated by this. The food was different than what we are used to, but it was good. We started out with fresh made guacamole (made at our table). It was a great experience. We had Carne asada tacos and a burrito, mini chimichungas, pezole, and cheese enchiladas. My youngest had the enchiladas, and it had a very dark red, smoky enchilada sauce, and she didn't like it. I was able to scrape it off and add salsa and sour cream. So she ate them. The rest of the meal was great! I would recommend trying it for yourself. read more

Our Barrio Queen experience. There's a bit of people working at the host stand, you will give them your phone number and will then get a text when the table is ready. We had pretty forgetful gentleman as our server, eg.: would say he was getting us refills or silverware but never did or it took a few visits to our table to get done. He also spent a bit of time at the table adjacent to our's helping their group a bit more. The food was good but we had an error with one of our entrees. Hoped to see other servers but a lot of heads were down and no eye contact with guests. Saw a leader from afar but they never came by. read more

Wow! My family came here to celebrate my fathers birthday and we were so impressed. Not only was our large party promptly seated but we also received amazing service. They provide plenty of delicious chips and salsa for the whole table and let me tell you, some of the best I've ever had. We all ordered off of the summer menu and WOW. Came in with 3 of my friends to have drinks and dinner at the bar. We had a couple rounds of drinks & appetizers when the initial bartender asked if we could cash out since she was ending her shift. We accommodated her request while planning to order more food and drinks. We then waited half an hour without ANY drinks or food while the new bartender worked on other orders and chores in a mostly empty restaurant. She even passed us up to serve the only other people who came in and sat at the bar. We called out a couple times but she was oblivious. We finally decided to leave, and as we were walking out I managed to catch her attention and told her why we were leaving for someplace else. Her response was that she thought we were just talking. She never offered service or apologized, and when I told her she was rude she waved goodbye and sneered at us. I caught the 'manager' on the way out but he seemed completely unprepared and just repeated that he understood. Long story shortened, we went next door and spent a couple hundred bucks on dinner and more drinks. This place has decent food but the employees and management seem to be the issue. Our first visit to Barrio Queen already has us talking about a return! We visited on a Saturday at lunch, arriving soon after opening time. It was a pleasant October day, so we asked to sit outside. The patio was spacious and quieter than indoors; we were alone there until near the end, which was great, and our service was still phenomenal the whole while. First of all, the chips: they are seriously good. Hot fresh, crisp, covered in texturally-pleasing bubble. The salsa is pretty good, too, if a touch watery. To drink, my husband had a beer, while I had the Toloache Margarita. It comes out with the blueberry puree separate. I poured in all of that good stuff. This was an awesome drink. My husband ordered three of the regular tacos, carne asada chorizo: pork chile verde, and suadero azteca. I had three of the premium tacos: gringas, quesabirrias, and chicken tinga. Both of us agreed that these were the best tacos we've had in years. They really know how to do slow-cooked, tender meat that is loaded with flavor, and the fresh tortillas are soft but at the same time durable enough to hold up to saucy fillings. For me, the stand-out was the quesabirrias. WOW. This taco fad is one I've read a lot about, and yeah, I now totally get the popularity. For me, the chicken tinga was the spiciest, and I was glad to have some water to help my mouth cool down! This place totally won us over. We will be back! There are more tacos to try. read more

I'm surprised to see that this restaurant only has an average of three stars based on my experience today. It was my first visit and the management, Manuel specifically, went above and beyond to accommodate our needs since we are disabled. I have long been a lover of a special dish of Mexico usually only prepared in autumn and available year round at only two restaurant brands I know of in the Phoenix area. Barrio Queen is one of those restaurants and the dish is Chiles en Nogada. While I admit that neither one of the local restaurants makes the dish exactly to the pure original recipe of the nuns who originated it and as it was served by Frida Kahlo herself, I am content to satisfy myself with as close an approximation as is available locally. I'm also too lazy to make it myself, which requires two days and multiple steps. So we ventured to try the Chiles en Nogada at Barrio Queen, as well as the Tres Enchiladas entree. We were not disappointed and thoroughly enjoyed our meal. The Chile was quite large and overstuffed, and served with the requisite pomegranate seeds. It had a delightful flavor and it was packed with chicken along with all the other delicious ingredients. My dining partner, a resident of Tucson for 50 years, enjoyed his enchiladas tremendously and they were a spin on the usual offering that you find with three different fillings. I worked in food service for many years, having attained the position of Chef, and I can tell when food has been prepared from fresh ingredients. This food was all handmade, especially the calabacitas that accompanied our dishes along with the frijoles negros. I have to get back to Manuel however, and how he went above and beyond and saw to it that our food was prepared promptly and served piping hot even though it was ordered just after 1:00 p.m. which is technically still part of the lunch rush. I for one plan on returning and was more than satisfied with my experience at Barrio Queen today. read more

What can I say? Generally this place sucks. For more detail: ordered tacos. Pollo- so salty it was like the chicken was literally of the sea. Short rib taco had zero flavor Carnitas taco was decent except that there was the equivalent of a whole red onion chopped on top of these tacos. I ordered the chicken quesadilla as well. The thing was sitting on a half a pound of cabbage, and had what looked like six tomatoes, diced and thrown on top of it. The chicken inside of the quesadilla looked like tuna from a can. It wasn't even sliced pieces of chicken. My two-year-old ate it, but I would not have. I'm glad we came when the prices were set for happy hour because I definitely would have been furious if I would've paid full price for this garbage. At least the margarita was halfway decent, but that's about all I can say. Sidenote: the server had a look on her face like she was permanently smelling dog shit. It took 10 minutes to get the check after I asked for it. Now I can definitely see why there are so many poor reviews of this place. I'm sure it's going to close after a certain amount of time and hopefully the next business owner who opens something in that spot does a lot better of a job than this one. read more

Unlike several negative yelp reviews, I found quite the opposite during a recent Tuesday luncheon arriving around 12:15 where we were greeted warmly by the MOD. My local supplier had raved how good this place was as they are originally from Mexico. I realize that not all restaurants that serve Mexican food are great but let me tell you my first impression walking in was that the dining area was very clean with beautiful and whimsy artwork and decorations. Looking at the menu our young male server explained the menu and we learned that they provide table side guacamole preparation which I was not expecting as I am from the San Francisco area where although we have a large Hispanic population we just don't see table side guacamole being done. Everything that we ordered was great with our server providing great service throughout the time we were there. read more

Overall, I enjoyed my experience. As far as Mexican food goes, they are a little on the pricier side but have good flavor. I really enjoy their decor. I am a huge fan of Latin culture, and I just live the bright colors and the cantina feel. We all enjoyed our food. Nothing crazy amazing, but still good. My server was one of the bartenders, and she really could have done a lot better, the bar and well at the bar wasn't busy, but it took awhile for her to take our order and my wife and my drink was empty for most of dinner. When she did come back, she brought 1 drink, which I gave to my lady. Then she came back like 5 min later with 3 cups and put them in front of me... I'm not sure what point she was trying to prove as I didn't say anything, but whatever. Minor issue in scheme of things. They were clean, outside of the host stand area where they sell merchandise, that place was really dusty. I went to pick up one of the coffee beans they sell from Chiapas and dust balls, and a clump of hair fell off of it. We told her "hi, we were hoping to sit in the bar?" And she replied "open seating". She looked visibly angry, unhappy, unpleasant, and completely unwelcoming. I asked her if she would be able to give us a menu, and she said "bar will give it to you". Awesome, thanks for the warm welcome... Bartender was actually great, made nice margaritas and brought us our check quickly. I ordered a salad to go, which was $14. We tipped well and checked out promptly. When I got into my car, I realized they didn't seal the salsa container (did the hostess have something to do with that?) so salsa poured all over my lap, my purse, my car. Honestly for a fun Friday night outing this was a 1/10 - bad service, over priced, and mistakes like this on the food that just kill the whole vibe. So bummed. read more

During our recent visit to greater Phoenix, we took our friends (Meg and Ron) here for dinner. The Barrio Queen is one of their favorites, and although Gayle and I are not huge fans of Mexican cuisine, we we were more than happy to show our appreciation to them this way for hosting our stay. Barrio Queen is a nice, large, and family-friendly place. Our choices were all very good. I had a chicken mole dish, while everyone else opted for more traditional choices. Desk and food-related table service was efficient and friendly, while bar responsiveness was sometimes slow and forgetful. That was especially vexing as we were sitting in our nice comfortable booth directly in front of the bar. Restaurant staff were appropriately apologetic, including providing a compted beer for our trouble. read more

I'm always well excited to have new business locations open up nearby, however this one just didn't hit the mark in terms of quality control. Overall the food was fairly ok, but seemed subpar compared to the other locations. Particularly greasy and less care out into the products.
