Food is not as good as it used to be. Service is slow. Food is undercooked, sometimes it's burnt. They don't want you taking home the salsa. They get pretty greedy about it. If you have a party of 5 or more, they automatically charge 20% to each check, even if you do separate checks. Then when they give you the receipt, it still is on the for adding a tip. The worse part, try asking for cups for the salsa, they will not do it. They lost us as customers, but the owner, he doesn't care anyway. I've been going to Popos since I was a kid, and they don't care they lost me as a customer. read more

Came to Popo's for dinner on a weeknight around 7pm. We were seated immediately but the restaurant was pretty busy. FIFA was on and the bar was packed! We started off with warm chips and salsa for free (you'd be amazed how many places are charging for this nowadays). They have many different margarita flavors and we wanted to try them all, so we got 2 margarita flights which came with 8 mini margs altogether. Our favorites were the mango and peach blended drinks, so yummy! I got chicken fajitas and my boyfriend got another chicken dish (we can't remember which one). The menu is huge and has so many options, you'll definitely find something you like! Ambiance is your typical family friendly mexican joint. We stopped by Popo's in Goodyear the other day with some friends and unfortunately the experience was pretty mixed. My fiancée and I got there first while the restaurant was still pretty quiet and ordered a Dos XX Amber and a vodka soda. It was a little odd because for most of the first 10 minutes there was no one behind the bar and the place already seemed understaffed. When our friends arrived one of their drinks came out quickly but the sweet tea was forgotten and had to be reminded after we were asked if we were ready to order food. Once we ordered, the food took around 40 minutes to arrive even though the restaurant was only about half full. We also noticed a few tables that came in after us getting their food first. That can happen, so it was not a huge deal, but it definitely stood out. The biggest issues came when the food arrived. Our friends' meals were good, but instead of the spinach con queso we ordered we were brought the spicy bean dip. By the time the correct appetizer finally came out about 10 minutes later we had already started eating our chimichangas. The spinach con queso was extremely runny, had almost no flavor, and honestly was not edible. We asked to have it removed from the bill and our server was very kind about it. I do want to say that this was not a bad experience because of the server. She was friendly and did her best. It really felt like the restaurant was understaffed and set up to struggle. We actually frequent the Glendale location and absolutely love it. The staff there is always welcoming, the food is consistently fresh and packed with flavor, and the whole place has a warm, authentic atmosphere. While the Goodyear location is definitely newer and has nicer accommodations, it feels much more corporate and seems to be missing some of the culture and charm that makes the Glendale location so enjoyable. Overall it was not a terrible meal, but it also was not one that left us wanting to come back to this location. read more

We came here on a regular Saturday around 11:30am and it wasn't very crowded. We were sat immediately and the waitress was quick to get us waters From there on, the most painfully obvious issue was slow service--presumably from understaffing. Our waitress was generally great but everything--including the bar drinks took an unusually long amount of time to be delivered. The waitress seemed to be very busy and not slacking so my assumption for the extremely slow service was staffing. The worst part was the spinach con queso. It came out and wasn't super warm....and was actually very watery. No flavor. Unlike the dip I've ever had before at the one on Bell Rd. The waitress removed it from the bill after we brought it to her attention but I don't think I'd ever order that again at that location. Awful! I wanted this location to succeed more than most. I grew up near 67th Avenue & Indian School, and Popo's was a staple in our house. If we weren't eating at Macayo's, chances are we were headed to Popo's. Seeing one open in Goodyear filled me with nostalgia. Unfortunately, this location just doesn't capture what I remember. The service has always been above average, and I have absolutely no complaints about the staff. My disappointment lies solely with the food. My fried tacos were so greasy they left pools of oil on the plate before I even took a bite. The beans, rice, and meat were all bland and lacked the flavor I remember growing up with. The food simply felt lifeless. Maybe nostalgia has set my expectations too high, but after multiple visits, I've walked away feeling the same each time. That said, I'm genuinely glad to see the Popo's name living on. If you're a fan of the 59th Avenue & Bell Road location, you'll probably enjoy this one as well. Look, if we're being honest their food just falls short. The staff was lovely and attentive, the place is clean, service was swift, but the food... no bueno dude. The enchiladas were crunchy and tough, the tacos were greasy and rubbery, the beans were dry, the rice was mushy, the Relleno was soggy... I actually feel a little cheated paying for that meal. And it wasn't just me, my entire family would have rather eaten at Chipotle for half the price... sorry, I'm really not trying to be mean, I'm not, really, I just can't bring myself to not tell you all the truth. First time here. Very colorful inside. Went for lunch on a weekday at opening. Got busy quickly. I love the salsa they bring with the chips, so good! I had the "Taco Grande" and boy, it's Grande! The meat so tender, flavorful, and plenty of it. Sourcream and guacamole plentiful in inside. Rice and beans on side, come hungry, you'll leave full. Service was great. Has a few Tv's with sports on. Yum! We typically get take out, as we live in the east valley and it's on the way home from work for my SO. Please, please come to the east valley, although I would be going there more than I should/do now; total gluttony. I could make a meal just out of the rice and refried beans....i don't know how they make these, but the beans are crave-able. The portion sizes are huge, and we have learned to limit our portion sizes (ie...one item with rice and beans not combo meals....its too much, it's almost too much with one item). She was on it, Refilling our tea water chips and salsa. We were there at lunch time and split the Mexican pizza $13.99 loaded with shredded macha meat and all good stuff. It was delicious! I haven't tried Popos in the past because of the 3.2 rating. My bestie ate here last week and raved about it. We all went for lunch today. It was excellent. I had the three item combo (machaca enchilada, machaca taco and tostada). My husband had 2 carne asada tacos and a fish taco. Our friends had the chicken burrito with enchilada sauces and melted cheese on top. Her husband had the ground beef burrito with the enchilada sauce and melted cheese. I know! It was a lot of food, but we wanted to try a lot of things. Did not disappoint. Can't wait to dig into the leftovers. The prices were very reasonable and the serving sizes were very generous. I grew up going to the original Popo's and have now been to this location a handful of times. I will say that the original location is better.. but this one is good. Our food has always been good but service has been a hit or miss. Sometimes very slow. The one complaint that I have about this location is that the salsa is not as good/spicy as the original. If they could work on that I'd be much happier. The aesthetic of this location is also different from the original. It is much more chain looking and modern. Doesn't give off the traditional mexican vibes. It is very clean and comfortable. read more

Couldn't get service, when the server finally came over asked for specials, was informed there were no 1.99 margarita special only house margaritas for 8.00. I'm always looking for a good Mexican food restaurant. After recently speaking with two people about local restaurants, they spoke very highly of Popo's. They are conveniently located off of McDowell Rd. near Red Lobster and Olive Garden in Goodyear. The restaurant has plenty of parking and was easy to access. Once inside, we were cheerfully greeted by the receptionist and seated immediately. I found the restaurant cheerfully decorated and warm. The server was there in a flash and provided great service throughout the meal. When I try a new Mexican restaurant, I try a little bit of everything, to gauge authenticity. I had a machaca enchilada, machaca taco and tostada. Honestly, while good, the enchilada and taco had a lot of cheese and was just too heavy for me. I found the bean tostada with lettuce much lighter and refreshing. While I thought the meal was a little heavy, everything else was very nice. Based on the recommendations that I received, I recommend that you try it yourself. read more

After having Popos food from the other location I super excited this opened not too far from my house. I waited to go as everyone I knew said it's not the same and overpriced. I finally went in this past Friday , overpriced is an understatement that's for sure. I paid $19 for two cheese enchiladas, rice and beans. And $7.25 for a spinach enchilada ala carte almost $30 for horrible food Let's just say this I wouldn't return I ordered to go and I open my my bag and see that there are no napkins or utensils. I go to the front counter, and this is for lunchtime cause I picked it up to go. I asked for plastic wear and I'm told that they're not supposed to give them out. I said what do you mean you're not supposed to give them out if people order her to go? What do you give them? The young lady at the house counter says oh we don't give out plasticware. Our food took forever and our server was basically absent. We never had experienced such dissatisfaction and had to bring it to the manager's attention. He came out heard us but not listened as he seemed distracted & said server was new. I had to ask him if he was listening to me because he kept looking elsewhere but me. He was a younger man so either he was overwhelmed that night or perhaps annoyed. He did refund one of the meals as a courtesy but definitely will not go again on a weekend for dinner. My first time to their new location. My food tasted exactly the same as the Popo's in Glendale. I ordered the same item, cheese enchilada with a side of rice and beans. Doors opened at 11:00 am on a Saturday and we got there at 11:07, and we had to wait! That's how excited Goodyear is to have a Popo's. When we left, the wait to be seated, looked long! Hubs got the ground beed chimichanga a la carte. The chips and salsa here are great. We also ordered a Cadillac margarita. It was so so. Also, not very big. M-F they have lunch specials. Next time I will be trying the Albondigas soup. The decor is the same decor as the last restaurant but the last restaurant, did a really good job, so if it were me taking over the restaurant I would have kept it too. read more

I decided to try this as they bought an existing one of my favorite Mexican restaurants. Chips and salsa were delish They got us seated pretty quickly and they were busy at 1pm on a Friday. Our waitress was great but was very quick - dropped silverware off and left (needed napkins) quickly. Sang Happy Birthday and left. Dropped off checks and left.
