All he did was fill my washer, which he wouldnt drain. Told me i had a leak & needed a plummer. I said why cant u fix it. His reply, im not a plummer. What shite! Im reporting him to the Better Business Buearu. Hes a rip off artisit. Needs to make sure client KNOWS about his "$85" travel fee! He went from Norwalk to Wilton, a 10 min trip. I called Barry, who was curious and direct. Our dryer was beginning to make a squeaking noise that was getting progressively worse. I've repaired electric dryers myself. I've replaced belts, timers, heating elements and a set of wheels that a drum was supported by on an older unit years ago. I tell you this to submit that I am more than handy when it comes to fixing things. When I phoned Barry, I had the make, model and serial numbers written down and I was prepared to read them to him. He wasn't interested. He said "if it's the bearings, I have the four most common types on my truck at all times. I'll be able to fix it." I asked him for a rough estimate. He said "140-165". I booked him for Monday. He told me between 10-2:30. He showed up just after 10am. He popped the top off the dryer, looked inside and said "you need a new dryer. This one isn't worth fixing" He handed my wife a bill for $113.79 He said he could fix it, but it would cost over $300, so we should just buy a new unit. This dryer was a very inexpensive model and that's why it wore out so fast. We rent, so I have no idea if it was bought new. It can't be 5 years old. It's a modern unit. So, my take on this is as follows: shame on me. I should have forced him to acknowledge the make and model to determine whether the dryer was a cheesy unit or one that was constructed in such a way that it could be repaired for a reasonable amount of money. But then, he might not have made $113.79 for having spent 20 minutes here. If we ever need an appliance repair again I will not consider calling Barry's Appliance Service. I guess it's to his credit that he came back to our house three times ... but it was to fix a leak in our refrigerator. We ended up with a $300 bill for ... nothing. He tried three times to fix the leak. Finally I stopped requesting that he return to do his job because a) I was embarrassed for him, and b) it was getting absurd at that point. N I wish I had read the reviews before I called this idiot. He is the biggest rip off. Just left and I feel totally taken advantage of. He couldn't fix my problem at all couldn't tell me anything. He bad attitude and then proceeded to charge me an additional half hour "minimum labor charge" andthe total cost $122 and change For absolutely nothing. I'm happy to pay a service call but the additional labor was ridiculous. The whole time he was here he was rude and obnoxious to my beautiful sweet lab and to me. Never use this guy! read more

Sorry, but I have to disagree with you. I had trouble with my oven and paid $150 for one company to tell me what I already knew (that I needed an igniter). The serviceman said they would need to order the part, and once it was in, they would come back. Three weeks later, they had the part but called to cancel their appointment with me. Barry to the rescue. Not only did he come to my house straight away, but he was happy to get the serial number of the oven from me to double check he had the right part before he got here. An hour later, my oven was fixed. He was friendly, very courteous, and best of all, no nonsense. read more

I could tell from our first conversation that all he cared about was getting money for his service visit. Total scam. Barry came to my home, without telling me in advance that there would be a fee to do so. Spent 5 minutes looking at my microwave, and told me that it would cost over $300 to fix. WATCH OUT - DO NOT HIRE BARRY! I wish I had read this Yelp page before I had Barry come out to our house. I called him regarding my two year old washing machine. He told me that it would be an $80 service call plus parts and labor. We made an appointment for 9am, he took my name and address. Barry called at 9AM on the day of the appointment and said he would be delayed by 45 minutes because I live so far away (17 miles). He apparently was coming from Wilton, CT and I live in Old Greenwich (which by the way when I was looking for someone to come - his name came up with an Old Greenwich location). When he arrived (45 minutes late), we went down to the basement and I told him the light from the washing machine came on and it was the light that said there wasn't enough water getting to the machine. Before Barry had arrived I had previously looked at the machine and saw that the water hose was connected. I didn't realize there are two hoses (which is my fault). He turned the machine on and the sound it made was in fact the machine not getting enough water. I turned and looked at the water faucet and realized that the plumber who had been working on our house had unscrewed one of the hoses (there was one screwed on) - it is difficult to see it's behind the sink. I said, "oh I see that there is only one hose screwed onto the faucet." I got under the sink and handed Barry the hose. He screwed the hose back onto the faucet. He was here for 10 minutes max. He then turned to me with a perfectly straight face and said, "that will be $124.25." I said, "are you serious? I will pay you the $80 for making the trip because I agreed to that but what is the extra amount for?" Barry said, "for labor". I was flabbergasted. I couldn't believe that he charged me for ME finding and showing him the problem and me assisting him to screw on the hose. I felt taken advantage of and his visit left me with a pit in my stomach. I paid him the full amount. This guy will leave you feeling like there is no hope left in humanity. He gets zero stars from me. read more

Complete crook!!!!!!!!!!!! I called him since he was a local repair man that had been in business since 1975. He proceeded to open the back of my fridge charged me and installed a part for a leak which was covered free of charge by Whirlpool in a recall. In the process of installing drain tube, he cracked the drain pan, did not hook up new part and left old part in. He charged $177 for 10 minutes of work and then told me to leave fridge un-plugged for a few days to remove ice. When asked whether he could fix inoperable ice maker, he stated it would be around $350-$400. Can't comment on Barry's technical skills, because last Wednesday he made an appointment to come on Friday afternoon. On Friday afternoon he called and said that he will not be coming, not now, nor ever, because it is "too inconvenient", and hung up the phone. Don't know why coming from Norwalk to Stamford is inconvenient, or why it took him two days to realize it, or why he needed to be so rude. read more

We called Barry without looking into any reviews (bad decision!). He was rude from the second he arrived. He walked right into our home without any greeting. He then walked right into our house without another word. To reiterate the other review, "what a jerk!" Actually, jerk is a nice way of putting it. The issue we had was relatively easy to fix and should have been quick. He identified the problem and within a few minutes of looking at it, provided us with the total cost. We thought the price was a bit high, but we wanted to get it fixed and said alright. He started to take apart the appliance, but was very aggressive. He actually bent a piece and broke another! He was complaining every time he had to kneel down and could not maneuver very well. Throughout the work he was getting more and more angry. He mentioned that it was easy to fix, but he was struggling to even get it apart. It did not seem like he knew what he was doing. A couple of times he had to walk back outside to his van to get a part or a tool and each time he grunted and complained under his breath as if we were causing him great distress. It was very uncomfortable! After about 1 hour, all he accomplished was taking it apart and breaking a few pieces. He got frustrated because he couldn't fix it and he quickly put back together what he could, said goodbye and just walked out. VERY POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE, RUDE, AND NOT KNOWLEDGEABLE. We contacted Best Appliance in Norwalk, CT and they were wonderful! Don't even bother calling Barry. Stay away, far, far, away from him! read more
