First off I have always had a good experience at Dr. Barsanti's office although I had a similar experience as Thomas in which I was told I was a potential risk for periodontytis and needed to have a special cleaning done which was pricey but only compared to very basic dental work like check ups and basic cleaning so I wouldn't jump and say she is scamming people right away just maybe more focused on periodontytis then most dentists. For instance she also told me I had some spots she would keep on eye on overtime because they could potentially become cavities and when I left the area to receive a second opinion I was told that I actually had many cavities and wasn't a major risk for periodontytis but I could potentially be over time if I didn't floss more so unlike Thomas's second opinion mine ended up costing me 4 times what it would of costed for the periodontytis prevention. Considering Dr Barsanti comes highly recommend by individuals that have lived in this community for years I would give her a chance because as I she easily could have said I had a bunch of cavities and needed a very expensive procedure to fill them but didn't and only recommended a periodontytis prevention treatment. read more

Made an appointment about a year ago. Yep. A YEAR OUT. Got a call telling me that they could get us in for an appointment in September, but, as of OCTOBER 30th we were going to be out of network for our insurance GEHA. I told them I would take the appointment and we would just have to move quickly because my husband REALLY needed to get in. A couple days later a get a voicemail asking if I wanted to keep the appointments that I JUST MADE. ???????!!!! I call and leave a message saying I don't know why they are calling to ask if I want to keep the appointments that I just made...!! I see another call come through the next day while I'm at work (can't really answer calls at work), I step away from the counter to find out what's going on... this receptionist is asking me AGAIN if I want to keep the appointments! I ask her why they are calling me asking me this.... She says "Well, as of AUGUST 30th you were out of network so we didn't think you'd want to keep it". I said well let me check some things, but, I had an issue with them telling me it was OCTOBER 30 when we set up the appointments and then suddenly it's AUGUST 30! We hang up. Then I get Another call (apparently most of their customer don't have jobs and can just sit on the phone with them all day, but, I couldn't take another call!) When I had a chance I listened to the voicemail - it was their office manager telling be that FOR MY BEST INTEREST THEY WERE CANCELLING MY APPOINTMENTS EVEN THOUGH I TOLD THEM IT WAS URGENT FOR MY HUSBAND TO GET IN!! And no discussion on their part on how being out of network works or anything about preapprovals. Found out about how this works from a different dental office with an office manager who is actually helpful and NOT on a power trip. Don't bother with this office. Dr. Barsanti is scam artist. She will refuse service unless you pay unnecessary, overpriced treatment, which she will then try to sign you up on a credit card for. I got a second opinion on my teeth, thankfully, so I didn't get ripped off by this conartist. Moreso, my visit to her "office" was terrifying at best - the hygenist I initially saw was wonderful, but as soon Barsanti walked through the door the hygenist's tone changed dramatically from relaxed, comfortable, and confident to stiff, frightened, and meek as she clumsly spat out an obviously prerehearsed script trying to sell me a completely unnecessary periodontal appointment that my other dentist stated was entirely, willfully, unnecessary. I will never, ever, go back to this hackshop fraud of a dentist. Dr Barsanti is the worst kind of doctor - one who has no regard whatsoever for 'medicine,' and - either hurt or heal - only serves money, not her patients. I went to see Dr. Barsanti because I was having problems with a couple of my teeth. I told the receptionist while booking an appointment that I was in pain and having trouble eating because of it.....they couldn't see me for over a month. At my appointment NO work was done to treat either problem that I came in for. Instead (similar to the reviewers below me) she told me that I had periodontal disease that would require tons of ongoing, expensive visits for treatment. This was a HUGE surprise, as it hadn't been that long since I'd seen my usual dentist (I recently moved into the area) and he'd never said ANYTHING of the sort. After this, she told me that I needed to fix my problem teeth very soon before a root canal or worse would be needed. However, she said the periodontal treatments were more important and would need to be done first. Here is the real zinger...she's so overbooked that I couldn't get in for MONTHS! Here I'm telling you I'm in pain... and you're telling me that I need to get this cavity fixed ASAP.... but you can't see me for approx 5 months??!?!! That's CRAZY! I left distressed and called another dentist who got me in FOUR days later, fixed my problem (and without having to do an expensive crown as she told me I needed), and confirmed that my gums were NOT in bad shape (although, admittedly, I should be flossing more). I wish that I had read the other Yelp reviews before going to Dr. Barsanti. Like many others she told me that I had severe gingivitis and that I needed lots of expensive treatments that my insurance would not cover. They also told me that I had needed to make 3 appointments for fillings(only the first one covered) and a 500$ mouth guard. The staff used scare tactics about my health to try and convince me to spend thousands of unnecessary dollars. I felt like I couldn't leave until I agreed to the treatments and then when I came to my senses and cancelled they were very rude and pushy! Do not go to this dentist! read more

I scheduled an evaluation and a cleaning. They were pretty standard until I got called into the back to start the appointment. They were seemingly overly professional perhaps to maintain the white jacket "front" that the Industry- health complex can fall into. I have had perfect dental health my whole life, so I figured that I could get in and out with a cleaning and evaluation in a matter of an hour or so like my dentist at home. In their esoteric teeth terminology they attempted to scare me into an EXPENSIVE 4 appointment surgical cleaning procedure and proceeded to tell me that I had a serious gum disease call periodontytis. They claimed that they could only do their procedure by doing the top on one visit the bottom on the other and have a follow up consultation that wasn't covered by insurance. This was a major shock to me because I have always taken very good care of my teeth (brush 3 times, floss 1-2). I got two other professional opinions when I visited my old hygienist and dentist and both concluded that I did not have this disease and gave me a normal cleaning (scraping, gum checks, powered brushs, floride treatment) and I was in and out of their office in an hour and a half. In short, I have talked to others in the community and they have verified this sharing exactly the same stories: I believe that they are OVER DIAGNOSING to optimize their profits. This is compromising the service they are providing to the community and cannot go overlooked. I had already paid most of my bill to Barsanti's office by this time and had a remaining balance that insurance didn't cover. I went in to demand a refund but they couldn't, but they did waive a small amount of my remaining balance ($10). I would be very cautious if I dared go here. read more

My husband and I are sad to leave Dr.Barsanti and her crew in Arcata. We just moved down to the Bay Area and wish we could stay with Dr.Barsanti. First, Dr.Barsanti is the first dentist I've been to who actually educated me on proper flossing, brushing, and other teeth care. I've seen tons of dentists and she is the first to actually educate me so that I can prevent cavities and gum disease, and not brush my gums away (I never knew I was brushing too hard). Next, the entire staff is very friendly and understanding. I appreciate each and every one of those ladies who made each visit a pleasure. Like other reviews I read, I was told I had gingivitis and I did go through the treatment recommended. I am so glad I did because I had no clue what I was doing before I arrived in their dental office. Now my gums are very healthy and not swollen/bleeding. This office is also the first dentist to actually clean my teeth and gums at my 6 month appointment...They even check your gum depth which is really interesting--basically they know if you are flossing properly/regularly. Last, I'm not sure if the one review about switching dentists and having major tooth pain that Barsanti/team would not treat at the drop of a dime was the office's "fault" or the person reviewing fault. Just because you did not address a problem sooner at your previous dentist and/or did not plan ahead, does not make Dr. Barsanti a terrible dentist. The doctor has many other appointments that are made months in advance. Sorry she cannot drop all of those people who have waited and serve you first--she is not an emergency room. read more

Not what I was expecting, in a great way! I don't think I'm alone when I say that I dread going to the dentist. I always expect pain, anxiety, and lots of shaming for not flossing enough. But I can honestly say that after going to Dr. Barsanti's office, the those uncomfortable feelings and anxiety are a thing of the past. I switched dental offices when I got married because my wife was already a patient of Dr. B's. I was a little skeptical after reading a couple other reviews, but I try to take some reviews with a grain of salt. I'm glad I did. Like a couple other people, I was told that I had gum issues (not something anyone wants to hear or believe), which was something I had never heard from my previous dentist. I was still skeptical until the hygienist launched into a full explanation of how gum disease works and taught me the correct way to floss my teeth and sent me home with a Reach flosser that made it so much easier. She also showed me really gross zoomed in pictures of my teeth and gums and how I needed to do better on my own, the skeptic in me was sold. I have never learned so much in one visit to a medical office if my whole life! Now that I've gone through deep cleanings and have amped up my flossing, I don't have pain or bleeding when I floss. I have also had some cavities filled by Dr. B and I was shocked how gentle the shot was. So either she's way better than my last dentist, or I'm not as big of a baby as I used to be! :) Bottom line, I have had nothing but great experiences with every visit to this office, even when I'm having my face drilled. read more

I've been going here for almost 20 years, and have never had a bad experience. I've had a lot of work done here from ongoing periodontal maintenance to a half dozen crowns. Dr. Trish and her staff take the time to explain what they're doing and make sure you are comfortable. The few negative reviews I've read here seem to be a result of people not being able to be seen on zero notice. The fact that they have to schedule so far out tells you how popular this place is. I know they're expanding and adding another dentist this year, so that should get better. read more

Overpriced, and twice tried to trick me into signing a form where I'd be agreeing to thousands of dollars in charges, claiming the signature was "just to show that you'd received the estimate". Still flabbergasted on that one. I went in for a tooth that's on the verge of breaking apart. I got no temporary help offered, no temporary filling or crown - so my teeth are clean now (nice hygenists!) but I'm out a serious chunk of change already: over $400...and my basic issue is still not fixed. Do yourself a favor - unless you can afford $5000 for 2 crowns and some fillings, or $1600 for a crown, don't bother starting a medical relationship here. Plusses: nice, gentle hygenists. I would not recommend this dentist. Today was my first visit and the building was very clean and staff looked well kept and professional. My first dentist named Danielle was very good and polite, but ... I do believe the lead dentist tried to take advantage of me like so many other people who have left poor reviews. I went in today with no pain and what I feel is healthy dental hygiene and then they tell me I need 9 new fillings and that I have gingivitis. This is highly exaggerated. I saw the ex ray photos and it seemed as if I had no problems. My first dentist in the room could not find any problems either. My gums did feel uncomfortable when she started to poke at them but, they have always been sensitive. They are doing much better now than when I was with my previous dentist. They told me I will need follow up appointments and when I saw the prices, my heart sank. I then did some research and called another dentist and believe that this office has made some upgrades to their tech and building materials and are now charging people more than they should to pay for it. This is Poor Fair Practice. I went in at 7:45 and was not able to get out until 10:00 and all I had done was x-rays when I was there for a cleaning. I was charged almost $100 out of pocket today and had to sign a document about another couple thousand they plan on charging me before I left. They said it was only a notification form and not binding.... hopefully not because I don't plan on returning to this dentist. I would be careful trusting this practice and try to go somewhere else if you are concerned about the cost of dental repair. read more

Dr. Barsanti messed up a filling and drilled half of my tooth away! I had to have it fixed by another dentist! Do not let her touch your teeth! She will put you on a gingivitis cleaning plan when you dont have gingivitis. Shes just trying to get you to pay her $120 every 3 months for a cleaning. I had nearly perfect teeth until she touched my teeth. Now Im having problems with that same tooth she messed up! I will have to have it pulled or root canal. She even said that when she messed up. She said that she went too deep and almost hit the root and that I will probably need a root canal on that tooth. Now my tooth hurts when I chew. Dont let Barsanti work on your teeth. You will regret it. The receptionist Selena is a whack job and borderline stalker. She called me for months asking me why I was no longer coming back to see the doctor. I eventually asked her why she is still calling me and if she calls any other patients like this. She then proceeded to ask why I wasnt interested in coming in to see the doctor. My experience with Trish Barsanti was awful. My first appointment I left with a $10,000 estimate on the work that needed to be done (crowns,gum disease,fillings,deep cleanings) I thought this was kind of crazy because I have a history of great teeth and I take care of my mouth so well. So I decided to get a second opinion. The next dentist told me he would not put crowns on any of my teeth(completely unnecessary work) and that my gums looked healthy and are a beautiful color. Also, he said I had NO cavities. Ok, stark contrast. So I go and get a 3rd opinion just to make sure everything is good and that this work that Barsanti recommended is bogus. The 3rd dentist said the same exact thing as the 2nd....I have a beautiful set of teeth and very healthy gums, he would not do any of that work. Just a regular teeth cleaning twice a year. I feel like I would have been scammed had I not known any better. So aggressive with her recommendations and making problems where they did not exists. Terrible practice. read more

I went in to Barsanti's office because I needed a dentist while I went to college. I called, made an appointment (they got me in in about a month), and I was very impressed when I got inside. I'd never seen a high-tech dentist office before! Anyway, I was on PPM health insurance, which did not cover me in Northern Cali for the most part, and when I called that insurance company, they gave me a special billing code that when given to the receptionists that cover the billing, it would cover me for $100 of the cost for the emergency. When I got in, they told me that they would use this to bill my company, but I also had to give them $115 or so dollars in case the billing procedure didn't work. It made no sense to me why they couldn't work it out real fast by calling my insurance company, but I figured that what they said was true: once they billed the insurance, I would get my $100 back in the mail - (One hundred dollars is a big deal for a broke college student). After my "initial exam" they didn't do anything to help me and required me to make another appointment to go back. I held off on it so my mom could switch us to PPO insurance (meaning I could go to any dentist office instead of the 1 that a PPM would designate). In the meantime, I'd call the office to figure out why I hadn't gotten a check in the mail. THEY NEVER ANSWER THEIR PHONES - they screen it, I suppose, so I left a message. Then I called my insurance company and they said no one has tried to bill them in the last 3 years! So i had that customer service representative leave them a message (they dont pick up!) and I left a message shortly after. The problem was never resolved. They stole my $100! I have gone to this dentist office for over 10 years. Never once was recommended for anything other than a standard evaluation and cleaning every six months. The first time I went in to see Trish (it was her father-in-law before) I suddenly had perio. Next time, they told me I needed a series of additional cleanings. I talked with my family about this, and it turns out that she had been pushing my older sister, saying she would lose her child if she didn't get extra treatments. My sister got a second opinion. I experienced Barsanti's dental office to be overpriced and their treatment plan to be excessive and unfounded. I took my 3 year old son in after waiting 8 months for an appointment. I was told he had 9 cavities. The fees they charged were $233 for taking him in, looking at his mouth, waving a wand over it, and taking pictures with a tiny camera. He went back for 2 fillings and was charged $408. Got transferred to a pediatric dentist (thank god!) who sais that he has staining on his teeth (the molars previously diagnosed with cavities) and only needs to do 2 fillings now. Barsanti told me he had 9 cavities without doing any ex-rays! Now I wonder if he even needed the first 2 fillings done at all. I was in tears when they told me my son had so much work to do on his mouth. I came away thinking of what a terrible job I have done so far taking care of his teeth. DANGER!!! BEWARE!! DANGER TO YOUR HEALTH!! Let me first tell you that I went to Dr. Barsanti's for about 17 years when it was only Dr. Ronald Barsanti. I was so very pleased and cannot say enough good about him. So once his daughter-in-law, Trish, took over the business, I trusted that she too would be good and continued to go there. Well, in 17 years, I NEVER had gingivitis. Trish told me I had it at our first visit and I needed special, on-going treatment cleanings to get rid of it. Well, hundreds of dollars later, "it was finally gone." I was so confused because I didn't feel or see anything different with my teeth to believe I had something called gingivitis. My mom was a dental assistant and we always had perfect and clean teeth. The next visit with Trish, I was a few months pregnant and told her this. Well, guess what? According to her, the gingivitis had returned and this time it was SEVERE. She said if I didn't undergo a deep cleaning and on-going treatment, there was a chance my baby could be born prematurely or of a low birth weight. But to get this treatment done, I would have had to undergo shots of pain killers and that really frightened me. I tried to tell her my concerns and she only came down hard on me, reminding me of the consequences if I did not get this treatment done. I later asked around and was told not to undergo the medication associated with the treatment while I was pregnant. I had my records transferred to another dentist who said there was ABSOLUTELY NO SIGN OF GINGIVITIS IN MY MOUTH! He said if I had gingivitis, then the entire world had it. So please, do not go to Trish. The patient is not in her best interest. She is just money hungry. The more I asked around to friends and family, I learned that they, too, were also told that they had gingivitis and needed the "special on-going treatment" which is not completely covered by insurance. It makes me sick to think that she wanted to give my unborn baby heavy pain killers just to make a buck. I even explained to her that I had infertility issues and asked if it could wait. She said no. I am giving her one star because it will not allow me to give zero. read more

They told me that they took care credit, and then didn't take mine because I didn't have the actual card with me, only the number. They didn't tell me the procedure was going to take 2 hours, so when I had to leave half way through the appointment they were very surprised, and wanted me to come back for another 2-3 hour appointment, even though they were already half way through on this one. so I paid $140 for them to talk to me like I was an imbecile, and then not actually do anything. I came in for one specific reason, and NOTHING was done to address this problem. If you like baby talk, and people who aren't sure exactly how long you are going to be there, then this is the place for you. Clean, modern, trustworthy. It's a long wait to get in as a new patient, but it's worth it because this is a great dentist with clean and modern facilities and you won't be talked into procedures that you don't need. I've seen two of the hygienists here and they were both awesome (friendly, gentle, accommodating and explained what they were doing and how it benefits my teeth and gums). Trish was the same, and while busy, never seemed rushed during my exam and consultation. They will explain everything to you clearly while going over your X-rays and give you several options for treatment timelines and supplemental home care. With all this information, I left feeling confident with the recommendations (I got a second opinion once from a different dentist who recommended two root canals and crowns that I did not need 10 years ago, so trust is important to me... Still have no problems with those teeth!). A bonus is that everyone had pretty small hands (this is important if you've ever experienced the opposite). The place is sparkling clean and they are very considerate about your comfort (there's [new] tubes of organic lip balm for you in the restroom in case you forgot yours). Bonus #2 is that they have a same day crown machine should you ever need it. Not only is this fun to watch a tooth being 3d printed, but it will also save you from a second visit and the inevitable bacteria from the temporary. Everything they use is the latest and greatest and they are an in-network provider for my mediocre insurance. The only negative thing that I have experienced is that appointments that require you to see Trish are hard to book because she is so busy / popular (this is common for good health care providers in Humboldt). It was a few months wait for a filling I needed, however they put me on a patient-cancelation list and I was seen in a few weeks. New patient waits are really long, but once your in it's not a big deal. I don't write a Yelp review for very many businesses, but I am impressed with Trish Barsanti and her awesome hygienists. read more

This office is only in it for high production. My sister was diagnosed with many thousands of dollars of unneeded treatment, including extractions she didn't need so that they could do implants. I work in a dental office in a different town, and the extensive treatment plans they wrote out for her were ridiculous. Then, when my niece made an appointment to go there for fillings that were diagnosed at our office, they told her they needed new x-rays, even though the ones we took were digital, sent via e-mail, and only 2 months old. I have worked as a Dental Hygienist for 30 yrs, and my step mom has been a Hygienist for 28 yrs, and we both thought this office was out to lunch. read more

I too had been going to Dr. Ron Barsanti for many years and he was a wonderful dentist who really cared about his patients. His daughter-in-law seems only concerned with how much dental work she can bill you for. The last time I got a cleaning the hygienist seemed to take only a few minutes and didn't even polish my teeth. When I inquired if this is the new way, I was told that the girl was running late and had to make up some time. While Dr. Ron was there he told me I had a cavity too small to fill but we would watch it. Dr. Trish comes in and said it's time for a filling. After drilling for awhile she tells me that the filling has now turned into a crown. Also it seems that almost everyone that comes out of her office has gingivitis and needs her $10.00 bottle of mouth wash. I will not go back. read more

Called them to find out the best insurance to get. Had a great talk with the guy. THEN we got the insurance they named. I called for an appointment and the first thing they do is GOUGE ME. "we have not even met and they want me to come in for "appointment" consisting of "full ;films" which is unneeded because I have films from my last dentist. Nevertheless most dentists don't believe their patrons have a brain in their head.it's is become common practice to unnecessarily gouge a patient with things that cost little to no money such as an exam, unnecessary films, and unnecessary procedures. Apparently they had no availability until January. So this review will be completely meaningless to them. I live in Humboldt County and people from Humboldt County love to accept wrong doing, I do not. Too bad too because we have a ton of work that we will have to have done which im sure over the next couple of years would be in the tune of maybe 10-2- thousand dollars. Recently retired after excellent insurance and new to Humboldt, I thought Dr. Barsanti's office was really nice with lots of state of the art equipment but she said I needed six crowns for over $1400 each. I don't have insurance anymore so I looked around for something affordable and decided to go to CR's Dental Assistant School where crowns are only $800. I asked Dr. Barsanti to send my xrays and records over and I told her why. She got very snarky with me, said she wouldn't provide emergency care in the meanwhile and that I was in danger of breaking teeth that are urgently in need of restoration. She put a lot of pressure on me even when I asked for a scaled back treatment plan that fit my budget. The CR dentist says none of my teeth need crowns right now. Some teeth could use replacement for cosmetic reasons but I can't afford that. I asked CR for a referral to someone else because I don't trust Barsanti anymore, either to work with me on a treatment plan I can afford or to treat me in a caring and professional manner by insisting that I urgently need work that is beyond my means and that I don't actually need. read more

She attempted to charge me $100 fee in order to release my dental records to another dentist due to relocation. What a scam! I can understand a reasonable processing fee to forward x-rays, but this seems like an overly greedy fee. My current dentist charges zero dollars to forward their dental records. I too was diagnosed with her periodontal diagnosis that she seems to give 90 percent of her clients. She also advised that I get the expensive treatment prior to filling my cavity, strange priority in my opinion. Lastly she luckily has only performed one filling in my mouth (thank goodness!). All others were performed elsewhere and I could not tell you where they are, because they are quality fillings that blend right in. However the filling she did has always stuck out and feels rough and uncomfortable. This filling has now failed and chipped. Funny since it is my most recent filling and no other filling done elsewhere have ever had an issue. I called the office to see how long they cover failed fillings and the receptionist said they did not warranty any work done there. I was shocked that they would not stand behind and back the work they have performed in the past. I fully understand that nothing last forever, however a filling in my opinion if done correctly should last at least five years. Trish seems more concerned with making money than providing quality work in the best interest of her patients.
