Had horrible service. Had partials made and after at least 10 return visits to attempt to adjust, they still didn't fit properly, and we're so uncomfortable to wear. The cost was extremely high for the partials that I cannot wear because of the pain it causes. read more

I had a full set of valid xrays less than 1 year old transferred to this office. I was refused care and cleaning. This dentist refused to provide anything unless I then paid his demand for new xrays. he insisted I had cavities that I do not have. I don't have any cavities. So if a dentist is this broke and desperate, find another one. I left when I didn't want to get fillings for cavities I don't have if you know what I mean. Find an honest office. read more

I'd give zero stars if I could. It's hard to find a dentist even in an emergency in Humboldt County. Dr. Choi was the only one taking new patients, so I decided to give him a try. I didn't really have much of a choice (especially since one of my fillings just came out). I came in feeling very anxious. I was shaking. I've been having arrhythmia because of a heart condition I was born with and that makes me feel extra anxious lately. I also have dental trauma and emetophobia (fear of vomiting). I told the x-ray technician about this and she said I needed to do 18 x-rays. That was more x-rays than I've ever had to do in one dental visit but she said I had to because all new patients do. So I tried to be brave and get it done. I gagged 4-5 times, maybe more. This was torture for me, but I thought that if I got it done, I'd get a quick exam after, make an appointment for a filling, and I could go home. But instead, things went WILDLY off-script . . . After the x-rays, I cried because of the stress and trauma memories. Dr. Choi didn't care, he yelled at me for crying, told my partner to go back into the waiting room because I was "an adult and didn't need emotional support". He asked my partner what was wrong with me and I wondered to myself what was wrong with HIM (the dentist). I thought he might be on drugs or something because he kept talking constantly and in a bizarre and terrifying manner. Dr. Choi kept talking over everyone. No one could explain anything to him. I tried to explain why I go by a different name and pronouns from the ones on my forms and he did not want to hear it. He said, "I don't CARE about your sexuality!" (Geez, he doesn't even know the difference between gender and sexuality) and "If I use the wrong name and pronouns for you and you're offended , then that's YOUR fault!" even though I was trying to explain in a neutral tone and hadn't even been offended, he sure sounded offended by my very existence. When he went to examine me in the chair, he kept telling the x-ray technician that he was "teaching me a lesson" (What lesson?! That dentists are terrifying and I should never go to one ever again?!?!). He yelled at me for saying "I don't know" when he asked if my filling that had come out hurt (all my teeth seemed to hurt and I wasn't sure if it was that one or not that was the problem . . . now I think maybe the pain was from an ear infection I just got diagnosed with when I went to the ER this Sunday). I didn't open my mouth to let him look because I didn't trust him. I didn't know what he was going to do. Dr. Choi said in an exasperated tone, "I can't work with this patient!" And propped up the chair. I got up and was on one side of the chair to protect myself while he was on the other side. He said he needed to "check my gag reflex" because he didn't know if he could "get a drill in there". What the heck?! It was crazy talk! I've never had a dentist say such stuff to me. Usually they try to soothe a nervous patient, but this guy seems to have a sadistic streak. I asked in shock, "You gag your patients?!" and he's like, "No I don't!" even though he had just said it! What?! It was surreal. My partner was there to witness it, too, and he couldn't believe what was happening either. It didn't seem real. There was one patient with him in the waiting room who could also hear what was going on and said to the lady at the desk, "Maybe I should come back later when he's in a better mood," but the lady told him to stay. Dr. Choi demanded that I leave and told the lady at the desk not to charge me for the exam and x-rays. You might think that was one good thing but I paid severely in trauma. Who would treat their patients this way? It's monstrous! Even if you don't like someone, you don't do that! You do your job and be professional and you help the patient. That's your JOB! Going to the dentist is already scary for a lot of people, why would you make it worse? He wonders what's wrong with me, but what's wrong with HIM? What happened? I thought from the glowing reviews on here he'd be okay but . . . Whoa! Totally the opposite of what I expected. If the good reviews are true, then what happened to this man? Did he forget how to be a human being between last year and this one? No listening, no empathy, no compassion, no professionalism, but plenty of anger and sadism. What was going on? I am just shocked. When I got home, I felt as if my soul had just left my body. I had a panic attack on Sunday and went to the ER. Please get this man some help. read more

Dr. Choi combines the HIGHEST IN HIGH-TECH with his commitment to EXCELLENCE, ARTISTRY, FRIENDLINESS, SENSE OF HUMOR & willingness to EXPLAIN EVERYTHING CLEARLY. In 1998 a Silicon Valley dentist did a gold crown & 7 years later, decay formed underneath & a new one was done in Westlake Village. Luckily, I didn't let the Silicon Valley dentist do my whole mouth! Lesson learned: BE SURE MY DENTAL WORK IS DONE WITH SUPER EXCELLENCE EACH TIME! In the long run it costs less! Here's why it feels as though a UFO abducted Dr. Choi, taught him the most advanced techniques, then returned him to earth for our benefit: MARCH 2020 - Part of a huge silver amalgam filling in tooth #18 done in Westlake Village in 2005 fell out. In 2005 the old 1989 filling was first DRILLED OUT in a lengthy process with many anesthetic shots. It felt like large chunks of "concrete" was busted & landed in my mouth! After the big job the dentist called me at home that evening to check on my pain, which was moderate with Advil. I EXPECTED A REPEAT OF THIS HUGE JOB WITH DR. CHOI. To my surprise, Dr. Choi simply applied a SOLUTION to the filling, waited 15 minutes, then PLUCKED out the old filling! He then LIGHTLY drilled & buffed inside the "crater" & MADE THE PORCELAIN CROWN IN HIS OFFICE (with NO gold so x-rays can reveal any decay forming!) & let me watch the whole process! He opened marble cabinets, pulled out an aquarium-like tank, selected a pre-made crown & placed it in the tank, which "knew" how to carve the basic crown to fit my situation. He then placed the beautiful crown on tooth #18 & was done! This was accomplished in just one appointment, not 2, so no temporary crown was needed for 2 weeks! There was NO PAIN afterwards! Then the Covid pandemic was announced. Dental hygienists were rare until a Covid vaccine emerged in 2021. MARCH 2022 - I met RACHEL, an A+ dental hygienist, who alerted Dr. Choi to x-rays showing BONE LOSS. At home, I did online research & dumped the cheap calcium tablets I took for 16 years & ordered Jarrow Labs' BONE UP. X-rays in APRIL 2023 showed overall strength so the BONE UP made my bones denser, thus boosting my confidence in hanging onto all my teeth until I "kick the bucket." Rachel taught me a new flossing technique where I "scrub" beneath my gums with 3-4 scraping strokes on each side of the 2 teeth in focus. Revolutionary! JULY 2022 - It felt as though part of the silver amalgam filling in tooth #21 had chipped off & I feared that the whole filling might fall out! He gave me 3 choices - (1) Bevel ("buff") the chipped tooth so it feels smooth (FREE!); (2) do a white composite filling; or (3) do a porcelain crown. Dr. Choi said all that's needed now is to smooth the sharp edges where part of the ENAMEL chipped off since a white composite filling wouldn't add more strength. If pain begins, I should contact his office immediately. So I went with option (1) & felt great relief that the more expensive options weren't needed now! At this visit, x-rays showed that my teeth, gums & BONES look very strong (so no bone loss was indicated)! I was so relieved, though I brush my teeth 10 times a day, after every meal & snack, before acid can start eating at my enamel & help decay set in. I floss nightly or more often if needed. We're so blessed to have an extraordinarily talented, ethical & compassionate dentist such as Dr. Choi in our rural county, where the hospitals rate only 2 stars out of 5, forcing me to have annual lab tests & checkups in a 3- to 4-star hospital in Willits, CA, in Mendocino County. After 2 days watching him use his new computer and 3D printer for 2 hours each time and repeatedly telling me that he wished I still had the broken off tooth veneer he could copy he put what I would call a teenage tooth in me. It had gaps and was much smaller than my other teeth, which he told me was intentional. After taking my several thousand dollars he told me as I left that " if I wanted that tooth fixed properly that I should consider returning to my dentist in Mexico" who said had done excellent work. It fell out 6 weeks later but due to his recommendation and inability to actually repair my tooth I did not go back to him. This was 3 years ago, but I waited to comment until I was no longer so mad. Dr. Choi is my favorite dentist of all time! He was very friendly and very patient with me through my fear of dentists! He made sure everything was as painless as possible and talked me through what was going on. After learning about the war of Chess, particularly here on the West Coast, I have realized that my being light skinned is a detriment to social contracts of respect. Dr Choi seemed to have incredible relationships in his office, as well as impeccable technology and know-how. However, upon recent visit for a cleaning, I learned that he does not even see his patients during a routine cleaning unless requested or making other arrangements for further work. I am disgusted by his sense of "Capitalism" and he shares a common landlorship of bad customer service with much of California. I will not return after showing his dental hygienist that I had an infection and still receiving no visit from him during my teeth cleaning. Had a teeth cleaning appointment at 3pm waited about 10 minutes, they were busy. They are offering 5% off if you pay services in full right now. I have been a patient for this office since 1998. Dr. Bennett was the former dentist at this location. Dr. Choi now occupies his spot, and in my opinion is just as good if not better then Dr. Bennett. I had a crown Dr. Choi put on a few years back, a month or so later Dr. Choi called me back in to redo the crown because the first crown was made of faulty material, and he redid it all for free. He even took me in the back to show me the machine that re creates the tooth (crown), it was very neat to watch, and the whole process is fascinating. I appreciate an excellent dentist like that. They hygienist is also excellent. My teeth look and feel very clean every time I go in for a cleaning. I have had nothing but good experiences with this dentist. Dr. Choi is very personable, pays attention to detail, and is very thorough with his patients. Most dental work is expensive, in general, and his work is on par with the cost, and is worth it. Everything about this place is worth 5 stars. The office/building the staff works in, is in an old, but well kept Victorian structure in Arcata. Every window looks out on a yard of beautiful plants and native vegetation. Its a very relaxing feel for a dentist office. The staff is personable and friendly. read more

I had a broken root on a crowned molar, the tooth had to be pulled. Dr. Choi carefully and gently removed the tooth in one piece, which is an indication of skill to me. It is not uncommon to have to bisect a molar and dig out the roots, a situation to be avoided if possible. Dr. Choi was straightforward and competent. I have to wonder about some of these other reviews, seems like people really bring a lot of psychological debris into their analysis: Capitalism and Light-skin didn't have any relevance in my experience. I really thought I had a good dentist there. Unfortunately, I was unable to pay a small bill ($50) over the course of a few months... at which point the desk staff not only decided it was appropriate to discuss my finances with my father, they also referred me to a collections company that called me AT MY PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT several times, which is an illegal practice. My business manager had to chew the agent out over the phone on the third call to get them to stop. I was just going to ignore this and let it slide, but just now I got a hang-up call on my caller ID from Dr. Choi's office. I'm pissed. I'm also pretty positive that it's a HIPAA violation to talk to my dad about my bill. I'm an adult and it is absolutely NOT okay with me to have tattled on me to my father. Throughout my 27 years on earth, I have been rotated to a dozen different dentists and now having been settled in Arcata for several years, I can say without equivocation that Dr. Choi is the best dentist I have ever had. He is incredibly personable and genuine. His passion for his work radiates as he carefully takes the time to not only tend to your dental needs, but to educate you on the procedures he is doing. Every time I leave his office, I feel as if I just got done attending a dental hygiene 101 lecture. His staff seems to share his positivity and everyone who has done some kind of work on me has been very thorough and very friendly. He is a bit on the expensive side but then again, I am not well versed in what a typical dentist costs (particularly if you are without insurance like I am). But to give an example, an exam, a cleaning, and a couple of x-rays cost me $267. In any case, this is just one of those things that you feel right about spending a little extra on because the return in quality is very high. He also had to replace a filling that had a bubble underneath it shortly after he filled one of my teeth. He did not charge me for the filling, but charged my insurance company!l instead even though it was caused by his work originally. I found Dr. Choi to be the best dentist I have ever been treated by. His staff was wonderful, they put me completely at ease. I was recently seen at this office to fix years of chipping of my front teeth (top and bottom). I picked this office, even though it was out of town for me, because they were the only office that was open the week after New Years. I gave his staff an attitude during my first appointment which I regret, because I was trying to use an east coast discount plan which is (I found later) useless outside of that area. Everything treatment-wise was to be expected, my x-rays were out of date so I got those redone, I was over due for a cleaning which was taken care of (and I got a goodie bag of products that was cute). He also gave me an awesome deal on a teeth whitening kit (the one that they make a personal model of your mouth for) so that the bonding material (for the caps to be used on my damaged teeth) would look better longer, with a year supply of the bleaching product. When all the necessary preps were taken care of he did a great job on my chipped teeth by capping them in one day. By the way he also gave me free of charge, a new bleaching tray fit my new fixed smile. When I was caught up on all my basic dental care and he fixed my one top and I want to say 3 or 4 bottom teeth (I can't tell which one's he capped because they look so natural) I felt like I was 5 years younger and looking in the mirror was a relief seeing what I wish I had taken taken care of before now. It's definitely a place I will return. They are very kindly staffed; I forgot to cancel an appointment once and they re-scheduled me at no charge. I was never concerned that I was getting unnecessary treatments or being over charged (a staff member actually printed out list of treatments that were tax deductible for me). 3/23/16; I made an appointment about a month ago and I was quoted $110.00 for a cleaning and $89.00 for X-rays. I went to my appointment and really liked the staff along with Dr. Choi. At the end of my appointment I was given a bill for $420.00 for extra X-rays and an increased cleaning rate. I was not informed that my bill would be twice as much as my quote. This was deceitful and I felt like I got 'hustled' at my new dentist. They completely failed to inform me that the price was going to be twice the quoted number and I'm telling everyone about it! read more
