Not a big fan about the new gate system. It's nice that you can use digital payments on your phone or smartwatch. The problem is that you have to be careful to watch that the gate registered when you are paying to go in and when you are paying to go out. If the system doesn't charge you to get out of the Bart station then you will need to see an agent to reset your digital card. The staff will probably assume that you skipped paying, so take the extra time to move slowly and check that your payment was taken when you exit the bart. read more

Good people working the Union City BART station booth. But station maintenance is poorly executed with too many of the platform lights out. This results in less than comfortable travel at night. As well as drug deals being offered on the platforms. The poor lighting at the Union City BART station is in stark contrast to the brightly lit platforms of the Bay Fair BART station. BART Management should look into re-engineering platform lighting of the Union City BART station. And rethinking site maintenance schedules too. read more

Nice to navigate. Lots of buses to take you around Union City. Bart is better and safer now . It is fast and reliable. This particular station is cleaner than some of the others. The Verandas Apartments and Avalon Apartments are very near. In fact every time I go to this Bart I like to check up on these two dying bushes at Avalon.... Two said dead little bushes. I'm not sure why they are struggling so. Bart trains today have no carpet or fabric seats that hold germs like a bathroom rug. Everything is clean and since covid air purified. I think they have Merv 14 filters if I remember right. Those give bart trains that crip fresh clean feeling. On the train you are to wear a mask and be considerate to other fellow human beings on the train. I saw one old grandma with hardback books in a mesh bag. One guy with a bicycle. Other people with construction boots and one holding a skill saw like it was his baby. Back to these dead bushes. There must be 40 or more similar other ones that are all doing just fine. I was trying to figure out why they were suffering so. Too much shade? Were they in front of a stop sign where cars or busses would accelerate and shoot them with toxic exhaust fumes? I don't know. What I do know is landscape services stink. Could you imagine paying Avalon all that rent and HOA and live with such junky looking weed filled landscaping? I heard that the housing around this bart area is horrible to live in. A very bad experience. Stuck in these long leases trapped. Construction is a finicky thing - cut corners and it can make the difference between a good and a horrible living experience. read more

This is an okay BART station, what more is there to say? When it comes to public transit, is it possible to truly get an outstanding review -- in the 4 or 5 star range? Probably not. This BART station has everything you need: + Plenty of parking + Clipper Card machines to recharge your cards (they could probably use a few more) + Public bathrooms -- haven't been in them, but I'm just surprised that they even exist Is it an amazing experience? Not really. Do the trains generally run on time? Well, I suppose it depends on what you call "on time." In comparison to many other stations, Union City is pretty decent in the fact that it's "clean," does not smell like pee or feces and it's well lit. Thankfully, I can walk to this station from my house - but this parking lot tends to fill up fast so heads up on that. You do need to pay for parking, so remember your parking spot number which is located on the ground. There are restrooms available after you go through the ticketing area. There are sometimes soliciting when you walk out of the gates during the week, like girls scouts cookies and religious peeps. I am unbelievably disappointed at the insincerity and lack of professionalism I experienced today when my partner and I went to this BART station. If I could've driven to my destination, I absolutely would've. But due to unforeseen circumstances, I had to opt out for public transportation instead. Additionally, I'm upset about the time and money I wasted here due to being unable to ride BART to my destination today. About 8-10 workers were standing in the front of the station just talking amongst themselves. I would not have found anything wrong with that IF there wasn't anything that I needed to be aware of. Why did nobody think of informing us, the patrons of this establishment, about the ongoing work being done on the platform and the inability of riding the train? I can only assume this behavior was due to the fact that the station could get monetary compensation somehow. I am inconceivably disgusted at this. Truly shameful on their part. read more

If you're a commuter from the South Bay and you're looking for a solid BART experience, Union City BART Station is probably your best bet. You might be thinking, isn't Fremont closer and safer? And I'll be telling you that you're right, but not quite. There are a lot of commuters coming from Fremont (and more south of Fremont), and unless you're planning on nabbing parking at the crack of dawn, you're better served by Union City, which has plenty of parking, as well as an additional lot run by the city. Also would like to note that it's also going under renovation, so a lot of the facilities will be newer. But let's talk about what you care about: the bathrooms are cleaner than Fremont. If you're going during the weekend, by all means take Fremont, but if you're trying to make your commute all the more bearable (or at least as bearable as a commute can be), go to Union City and avoid the headaches of fighting for Fremont parking. TIP: It's BART you kinda have to take it. read more

This is one of the cleaner and more recently renovated BART stations in the system. One of the machines couldn't read my credit cards but another one worked fine. Bathrooms have a 10 minute limit sign on them to presumably deter drug usage and other illicit activities in there. BART as a whole obviously needs an overhaul and severely lags behind similar systems I've seen in other countries such as Bangkok, Hong Kong, and Singapore. read more

Since I live right by here, my boyfriend sometimes has no choice but to park at bart... Just this past weekend, we got back to his car and found that someone did a hit and run on the driver's side door... which is going to cost $1000 to repair. So not cool. Probably one of the nicer looking Bart stations I've been to in the bay. The exterior was renovated the past few years? I forgot how recent, but the exterior building looks nicer than how it was before. The interior is the same as any other BART stations.. old and gross. However, compare this to a NY subway... and BART wins hands down based on cleanliness! $1 for parking yet it's still very limited during weekday mornings. You'd have to get there by ~7AM to get a parking spot for sure. After 7AM, you're screwed. I like to park near my BF's house about 10min walking distance away, that way I don't have to get up at 6AM every morning just to get a parking spot. LOCK YOUR CARS and don't put valuables in there! It's not that bad... but there is a chance that bad things can happen. Lots of interesting people on BART... I have a major pet peeve for the inconsiderate people who don't give up their seats to an elderly that appears to be struggling to stand, or moms with kids, or those people who take up 2 seats just cause!!! ARGH. Taking BART makes me lose faith in humanity sometimes... Anyways, I'm glad I live only 2 min from this BART station. My buddy and I went to the Warriors game last Friday vs the Thunder. Trains were not crowded at all going up to the O.co Arena. I was kind of hesitant to ride during the evening hours. I have never taken Bart at night in my whole entire life. Until this night. The improvements from the previous Union City Bart station, I knew, made me feel safe. The darkened areas i knew before were well lit. Good thing the game started at 7:30pm. I didn't know you would have to pay for parking from 4am to 3pm. Plus, Friday's traffic from Union City to O.co was pretty bad. We would have missed the game if we drove. Getting off work late and don't want to miss your games at O.co? Bart is a great option. One of the worst stations on the map. Several reasons why. 1) transients and BAD drivers and ZERO police presence. In a 6 month span, arriving 630am and departing 5:30, saw police 4 times and two of those times were spent hanging out with the station "manager." They could use a traffic person. East Bay Uber and Lyft drivers can't drive or park worth shitake. 2) Inept station managers. One morning, none of the archaic parking machines were taking 5 dollar bills. I spoke to the manager nicely and she responded with attitude (possibly because I interrupted her Candy Crush time) and said "Well maybe you're doing it wrong?!" I told her I take bart every d@mn day, I know what I'm doing. She grabs my 5 (again, with attitude) and guess what? She tried and tried...Had to crumple it up, smooth it out a couple of times, flipped it around. made some excuses...and 3 machines later, it worked. No apology whatsoever and just walked away. 3) Parking machines will give you random change. You would think with ALL THE MONEY they have rec'd from voters, they would update these machines. Do not take card, only 1s and 5s. Best part is if you pay with a 5, you might get 8 quarters or 20 dimes or 40 nickels or 4 quarters and a dollar coin or two 1 dollar coins or a dollar coin and 10 dimes... It's NEVER consistent. On time I got 7 quarters and 1 Philippine Peso (same size as a quarter). SMH. WAF 4) Escalators are constantly out of service. At one point I had some knee pain so I needed the escalator to go down and it was out...Head over to the elevator and it was out too! Classic. Hobbled my way down the stairs and wanted to complain to the manager and it was crickets. Abandon the ship during rush hour! Stood for 5 mins and watched people jump the gates and not pay. Best job ever...Get paid to disappear and play Words with Friends in the bathroom or behind a bush. Good luck to you if you have to go through this station. read more

My first time getting off at this station earlier this afternoon. Destination was the Mayflower Restaurant on Alvarado-Niles, which I thought would be walking distance from the BART Station. This BART Station looked pretty nice and sleek...much better than some of the other stations in this transit system. Okay, I don't know what I have eaten last night except some yams, black eyed peas, collard greens and rice, but I had that familiar rumbling goin' on again...dang...I must be full of it...nature is calling again. The restroom facility here was much better and much cleaner...plenty of TP and the apparatus for drying my hands was working. Because this area is unfamiliar territory to me, I needed to know where DeCoto Road was. Station agent was very helpful and gave me the directions. The next time I get off at this station I will need to know the buses that run through this city. read more

This BART station is definitely one of the better public transportation hubs in the Bay Area. Those renovations paid off, as there's lighted areas in the parking lot, cleaner facilities, and an overall feel of an updated public area makes this station more desirable to use when taking BART. There's not as much foot traffic as the other stations, plus the parking lot generally has spaces if the nearby stations are too full, but don't press your luck. Once you walk out of the station, there's a huge parking lot right outside the entrance, plus shops are less than 5 minutes away! There are nice apartments and more shops nearby, so there's always people going in and out of this station at all times of the day and early evening. If other stations were like this one in Union City, more people would probably use BART, as it shows general cleanliness, adequate lighting in their parking lot, easy access to secondary public transit such as AC Transit here, and it's right in a community with shops & places to live. By no means is this a destination, but a desirable exit or entrance when someone has to use public transportation. read more

If there is a way to give less than one star, I'm sure I would. Bart, is by far, the most unreliable public transportation that is still in service in the Bay Area. Just by the metric of how frequent it is to have any sort of delays during peak hours can easily justify that they need to be replaced completely and their union has to be decommissioned. It doesn't help the situation when you get paid the highest, if not in the world, in the nation. Your median salary for your workforce was what ? Over 110k a year? They need to be monitored by an independent evaluator as for any delays due to tracks, systems, police activity, or whoever reasons that are inexcusable for their failure in meeting the most basic service line agreement in punctuality (or being on time). BART is typically a pretty bad experience. I take the 44 minute daily journey from Union City, to Montgomery and back. That whole trip starts with me driving to the Union City BART station, of which fee parking is typically full by 7:20 AM. If this area is full, there is a paid lot just across the tracks. If you plan on parking here, I would recommend a monthly pass or EZrider. The station itself is somewhat clean, has two restrooms, and a good amount of seating options. There are always Jesus people out front, and Uber/Lyft drivers love to stop in the middle of the three way intersection to drop off/pick up people. The bathrooms never have soap, so you get to have gross hands with the rest of the homeless people sleeping across the center of the trains. Definitely not the worst BART station! read more

Wednesday, 6:20 p.m.: After I stepped off the train, I heard this wonderful music. It was loud, and I thought that somebody had a boombox blasting. I also wondered if some kind of festival was going on in the distance. I scampered down the stairs and noticed some equipment behind the station agent's booth. "Okay." I was puzzled for a moment and suddenly realized that I was hearing a Santana song! When I went through the gates, I looked to the right and saw a young guitar player playing "Black Magic Woman." I was stunned. The guy was incredibly good (it really was like the song was coming from a radio or CD player). I was in a hurry, or I would have hung around and given the guy some money (sadly, there was almost no one around at the time). I walked off into the night with a big smile on my face. I don't know if this will be a regular thing at this station (I'm used to hearing live music at a few other stations, and some of the musicians are more bizarre than talented), but I sure hope so. Just the fact that the guy was allowed to play at all was really something (I'm sure that the equipment I saw behind the station agent's booth had to do with him). Update (11/17): I heard from the guitar player recently. He's a wonderful guy, and he's been playing for 30 years. He also sets up his own equipment. Worst parking situation ever. Ever since I have lived in the Bay Area I have dreaded coming to this BART station. It's a pain in the butt to even get to this station in the morning due to Logan High School being so close and the ridiculous traffic light situation at the intersection of Decoto and Alvarado-Niles. It has a great location with lots of convenient shopping and food options within walking distance which could make this one of the better BART stations if they solved their parking problem. The nearby high school also increases the odds that your car will get vandalized in one way or another. Luckily I have never had permanent damage done to any of my cars but I have had milkshakes and many other different types of food left on them. I received my first parking ticket ever at this station when I parked at what I thought was the last parking stall in the corner of the lot. It was shaped just like all the other parking stalls but it had a white line on one side and the concrete curb on the other. Apparently that isn't an official parking space according to the BART police. I also had my car towed once when I parked in the abandoned shopping center parking lot that used to be next door because I was running late for work. There was no sign posted...or so I thought. When the police arrived (because I thought my car had been stolen) they picked up a sign that was laying in the nearby bushes and informed me that my car had been towed. $181 down the toilet because of a cleverly placed sign. They are doing some major construction/remodeling of the parking lot and have added another lot across the railroad tracks but there is no direct access to the BART station so you get to hike a good 1/4 mile if you choose to park there. I think I'll opt for just never returning to this BART station ever again. read more

Sometimes I'll have to run up the escalator to catch their train before they leave me that smells like pee inside. The parking at Union City station is extremely misleading and borderline criminal. The city of Union City owns the large parking lot on Decoto Rd. but they advertise it as if BART is operating it. If you try and park there and use your EZ Rider parking pass in the station, prepare for an $82 ticket when you get back. BART is apparently A-OK with these shady practices, because they refuse to take down their trademark logo from the large sign in front of the entrance to the lot on 11th street. As for the station itself, the remodeling is like putting a fresh coat of paint on an abandoned house. Only the exterior has meaningfully changed. I wish I had known that you can park in permit places after 10AM (damn you, small font!!) because it would have saved me daily outbursts of frustration during my 10 week internship in SF when I had to BART daily... Anyways, one time I forgot to pay for parking, and decided to be a good person so I called my mom came to pay for it for me 30 minutes after I boarded my train. You need a ticket to get in, so she explained her situation to the agent working. My mom proceeded to buy a $5 ticket ($1.75 is minimum) so I could use it later in the week and she inserted it, paid for my parking, and when she came out the agent let her exit through the emergency gate. So the next day, I was trying to see how much money was on the ticket and it said that it was coded for exit. I explained to the agent the situation (that I had my mom come and pay for parking and that she was let out of the side gate because she didn't go anywhere), she gave me a lot of attitude, lectured me on cheating the system, and promptly made a show of throwing away my ticket in front of my face, stating "As far as I'm concerned, you need to buy a new ticket". Unnecessary attitude, to say the least... Another time, a homeless man approached me and threatened to call the cops on me because he had seen me jaywalking. He left me with the last words, "I don't mean to scare you, but I'll be watching you..." So yeah, it's not my favorite BART station. Far from. But BART is sort of sketchy in general. Compared to the other stations there's less rift raft, I feel safer at night waiting for my ride. There's free parking on the weekends which is great. And because it's one of the first stops going to Richmond or Sfo, it's easy to find a seat. The bathrooms are outside the station though and there's construction on this station constantly. Clean, well-lit at night, many transit connections. PARKING TIPS: Here is a convenient map: http://www.bart.gov/docs/permit/BART_Parking_UnionCity.pdf The fee is $1 per day in the main lot before 3pm, which is the first one on the left after you turn off of Decoto Road. The farther lot is Reserved Parking only and requires a paid permit. You WILL get ticketed if you park here without a permit. The regular parking lot fills up around 7:15AM. We commuters practically fight for spots in the morning. The next closest parking lot is further East down Decoto Road on the other side of the station. This is a city-owned lot, so it costs $3 per day. You must walk across the train tracks to get to the station. On the weekends, the lot rarely fills up completely unless there is some big event going on. There's bike parking, motorcycle parking, and bike lockers. PICK UP/DROP OFF TIPS: I know the worst offenders are not reading this, so this is a warning to anyone driving or walking in the parking lot. There's a designated pick up/drop off area now, but it requires making a left at the stoplight onto the street in the center, NOT into the parking lot. It seems that there will always be at least 7 cars with their engine off, double-parked in awkward places that block other cars and pedestrians from moving in the lot. The (in)action is concentrated at the corner of the fee parking lot closest to the station entrance. TAKING BART: The trains to Richmond and San Francisco are on the platform furthest from the entrance. The trains to Fremont are on the platform closer to the entrance. I started using the Union City station in my last semester at SFSU because of the city's parking lot behind the station. It's cheaper than getting a BART Permit, the lots are more spacious, and they never fill up. A huge plus for this station and it's not even owned by BART. The actual BART lot is narrow and tight like every BART lot and when the construction was going on I don't think there was a drop off/pick up area which is really annoying. They've renovated the front of the station, adding on better stairs and new escalators as well as a huge window wall that makes this place look like an airport. I must say for a BART station it looks pretty dang good. Not sure if they've opened up the drop off area or if it's still just buses, but even that is better looking and more organized than other stations. Much like Fremont it's a decent and safe station. It's not in a big city or in some ghetto factory/warehouse district so there aren't many ruffians about. I was able to walk back to my car in the city lot after 8 pm without problem when I had a late class and got home late. Plus this station is pretty much always clean though the staff can be kind of lackluster. Still a decent station and better than others! read more
