The service sucked. I was the third person in line, but when I got to the register, she just stopped taking orders. She said she would be right with me. No smile, nothing. Then she went past me several times, acting like it was a big imposition to take my order. Since it appeared they were very busy with the two orders ahead of me, I decided to get a shake to go. Apparently, I would have to wait for the two orders ahead of me to finish before my order could even be taken. While I was standing there waiting to have my order taken, I noticed how unclean the place appeared. I left before placing an order because my time had run out. The place's ambiance was not good. The young lady taking orders did not look clean and had all kinds of piercings on her face. Nice little place. Found it on the way back to the freeway after stopping at a peach orchard to buy from the farmer. Burger cooked to order, great toppings and a delicious milk shake after. This place is off my list of stops on I-5 and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. After issues in the past they finally did it. We put in a to go order to not have to wait for the SLOW service. When I get there the airhead behind the cash register couldn't count change: When I received my order they only had one burger when I ordered 2- I told them this and they said well you only Payed for 1 and I said Yeah but I ordered 2: instead of apologizing and remedying the situation they looked at me stupidly and I asked if I'm getting another burger and they again said I only paid for one. This is the best place to get a burger in Corning, ever since I moved here from Sacramento it's become my favorite burger joint, even tops our hole in the walls in Sac (and we have A LOT). The only downside is that the wait time can get pretty crazy during their rushes which is typical for a small mom and pop burger place, I've ordered online twice and they've lost both of my orders and sometimes their cashier is really rude (which sucks when I bring my family that come to visit from out of town) but the burgers are worth it all, I promise. read more

If you are passing by Bartel's on the 5 freeway, this is a great little place to stop and fuel up. The burgers are good, cooked to order and to your liking and fresh produce. They have 15 different flavors of shakes - using the torani syrups. We got strawberry and a peach/mango - yummy! Their tater tots were crispy and not greasy. Found Bartels right off I 5 and decided to give it a try. This was the best decision we've made for a lunch stop. The burgers we made with fresh patties not frozen, they seasoned them really well and they had that nice sear that gives a little crunch! The bun was soft and veggies fresh! While on a road trip back home from Oregon I was craving a milkshake and low and behold I took this exit for gas and figured this burger place probably had shakes. I checked it out and was pleasantly surprised to find that they did!! I asked what flavors they had and the gentleman mentioned the usual Strawberry, Chocolate, Vanilla and a few different syrups he had and then said he said the magic words he had a pumpkin spice that he hadn't used yet and I was like "yes please"! The shake was thick and yummy and really hit the spot and got me home happy and I didn't even need dinner. We arrived 15 minutes after placing our order and the staff was unorganized and not very friendly as they have been in the past. They told us that our order wasn't ready but after waiting a few minutes another girl found our order. We live close and arrived home approximately five minutes later. We unpacked our order to find soggy food I ordered my burger without cheese and requested to add ketchup, the bun was soggy and it had cheese and no ketchup as I requested. I also payed the extra to upgrade the French fries on one of the meals to large and all of them were small and cold and soggy I have frequented Bartels for many years and was the worst tasting meal that I have ever spent close to $40 eating there. Stopped here for a bite on our way south today and was surprised at the great service we received ! The employees were very friendly and greeted us as we walked in, they brought us our food instead of calling us to the counter, and even walked through to ask all of their customers if they'd like a top off on their drinks. I have literally been waiting an hour... they did not tell us when we got to the counter it would be this long of a wait which I found very rude. The poor young girls are completely lost behind the counter. Every other person waiting ahead of us has walked their burgers back in because they were wrong. All our burgers are well done with we did not ask for! The owners clearly need to do better so these poor girls stop getting yelled at. The burgers are cold... we literally waited almost two hours for cold and dry burgers. Very sad because some locals told us this is usually their favorite spot but they order online due to the wait. I decided to eat in rather than take it on the road. We walked right in, there was one guy finishing up his meal at the counter. We were greeted pleasantly and he was very patient with my parents while they made their decision. After we ordered we went to sit down but every table had to be cleaned. I asked if I could have a rag so that I could wipe one down and he apologized as he handed me the rag. I wiped down our table, gave him back the rag while we waited for our food. While we sat 5 more people came walking in to order, so my guess is there's probably a fairly steady flow of customers since it's right off the highway. I would always rather try a small mom n pop place than a chain any day. As we sat we noticed they didn't have the bug light on, which it really needed to be due to the flies that were hanging around. We got our food in a reasonable amount of time after ordering. Our burgers were looking really good when they delivered them. We were all satisfied with what we ordered. They were the perfect burgers, fries and onion rings. I did order a chocolate banana malted which to me tasted a little sweet so I could only drink half of it but that could just be me since I hadn't had one in a long time. There's a few things that could be improved at this place but we all enjoyed our burgers. FYI, if your traveling, the regular size burger is perfect size without putting you into a food coma. The burger my girlfriend ordered was average. Ordered crispy fries, and they were not. Asked if I wanted "everything on my chicken sandwich I said yes, assuming that referred to veggies, but it came with mustard on it that ruined the sandwich. Who puts mustard on chicken sandwiches? My fault though, for not asking questions. Overall the food was only average, getting drink refills was very slow, and we'll go somewhere else next time. read more

It's a bad sign for a place to compare poorly to Burger King... My burger was topped with two huge discs of red onion (together I think they were larger than the burger patty) and a lake of mustard - standard; I'm glad I had them hold the mayo. My milkshake was so thick as to be undrinkable and was made from syrup and soft-serve, so the quality wasn't very high either. (The silver lining is that since I didn't drink it all, I saved myself several hundred calories.) Prices were above-average for generally below-average food. The atmosphere and decor are rather distressed, and the staff made notable errors in several orders around me. It's nice you can request your burger cooked-to-order; too bad that didn't seem to affect whether you got "well-done" or "well-done".
