We live a few fwy exits south of Basanti and we love Indian cuisine. Not hard to see why we love Basanti. The service is terrific - friendly, welcoming, helpful - that's worth 3 stars. There is a lot a variety in menus choices. We love tandoori but I have been impressed with their other dishes - especially the vindaloo. It's HOT. They offer to tone it down but it is always HOT! We come here so often we have a set menu of chicken tikka tandoori, lamb shish kabob, vegetable vindaloo, tomato soup, and sometimes an appetizer like the steamed Himalayan Momos dumplings. And don't forget the reasonably priced wine list with interesting inexpensive choices, like Albarino, from Spain, and Gruner Veltliner from Austria. These two whites pair well with the hot vindaloo. So another star for t Then the final star - for having the guts to open an Indian restaurant in So OC. This was not an accident according to Roshan, the owner. He wanted a local restaurant. Unbelievable. We were driving back from San Diego and found this place on Yelp. Seeing as how we never even knew that there was an Indian restaurant in SJC we decided to stop and check it out. The food was amazing. We had momo, samosas, chicken tikka masala, lamb rogan josh, basmati rice & gulag jamum. Not a single dish disappointed. The sauce of the chicken tikka masala was as good as you can get, the lamb was perfect. Not gamey in the least. The momo was dense and cooked to perfection. The samosas were also stuffed and paired with two different sauces and both were delicious. The wait staff was friendly and prompt. I cannot recommend this place more. You definitely need to stop by. This restaurant rivals some of the best food that I've had in London. The food is foremost full of flavor and it is FRESH! The chicken was very tender and moist. Nothing was greasy or felt like it contained a lot of fat. Can't wait to come back and try many more dishes! Round 2. Incredible! Aloo Ghobi is magnificent! My new fav OC restaurant hands down! Update: Just when you thought it couldn't get any better, they added some new outstanding dishes. If you like red onions, I can't recommend the Masala Papud enough! The food was amazing. We ordered the BASANTI veggie sampler to start. Each appetizer was flavorful and fresh. We then ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala and Chicken Korma with garlic naan and chili garlic naan, which all came in a large portion. Both dishes were delicious and had a great blend of spices. They give a ton of naan in each order, so we took plenty home. The service was fast and friendly. Definitely will be coming back soon! read more

Small Indian restaurant located in this tourist town. The venue doesn't have enough ventilation and the air got a little hot inside when there was a crowd. Overall the food was flavorful. The spice level could have been higher, my request was specific but they might be reducing it to protect us. The food was a tiny bit too sweet for our taste. Most Indian restaurant I frequented tend to be on the balanced salty and spicy side. If you in San Luis Obispo, this would be the Indian place to eat. read more

First let me start by addressing the less positive review. The portions do seem small. But, I am fat and I am full right now. I have always found the portions at Indian food restaurants deceiving. They don't have bathrooms, the complex has a public restroom... I am not sure bathrooms really affect my reviews of a restaurant. The location is small and has maybe 10 tables... but I enjoy smaller places that are owned by the very people working at the restaurant. I love supporting local businesses. The flavors were exactly what you are craving when you think Indian cuisine. The Chicken Tikki Marsala was perfect and exactly what I remember from my travels. The Goan Fish Curry had a very unique flavor and my wife liked it better then Chicken Tikki Marsala. Apparently this place is just a month old and we lucked out to be one of the first people to visit it. Every table has customers and everyone is commenting about the food in a positive way. I will give this 5 stars because flavors are on point. Place is clean. Staff is pleasant. I left full on one entree. Smile on my face. Feel I got my money's worth and it was a complete positive experience. Not only is the food divine, the servers are caring, attentive, helpful, and sweet. I don't think you can go wrong ordering here. The flavors are bold and hit the mark. It is amazingly delicious and you will remark several times to your partner your amazement and bliss at the quality of your dish. What I had: vegetable vindaloo with paneer, extra spicy. We were excited about dinner based on a coworkers recommendation. There was a friendly staff who greeted us and provided us a nice back table with larger seating. We ordered a few appetizers and two entrées. Alongside two beers. Come to find when the time came for our receipt we had been overcharged. We were also going to let it slide, but there is a long hair in the tikka masala. We brought up the bill for payment and everyone seemed sheepish, including the waiter and the staff cooking in the back that came out to see what was going on when I went to pay. The waiter quickly said I'm sorry it must have been another groups tab and there were only two groups in the restaurant at that time. The only item was an additional $14 brut charge that clearly stood out and he had known he tried to pull a quick one on us. Food was decent and service was good until we were served the bill.
