Basil Asian Bistro can be very good, but one has to know what to order. The problem with Asian restaurants in the area is that they try to be everything to everyone. Almost all of them are essentially Pan-Asian, boasting Chinese, Thai, and Sushi favorites. It makes sense -- one-stop shopping -- but not everything is done with equal excellence. I'm vegetarian, and one thing I appreciate about Basil is that they can accommodate and offer many different types of dishes for their vegetarian patrons. I can get (and very much enjoy) a vegetarian hot and sour soup, dumplings, and spring rolls. Almost all of the sauces are allegedly vegetarian at their base. Every time I ask; every time the servers check; every time the veg-nature of the dishes is confirmed. No fish sauce, no chicken stock. For those in the know, this is highly unusual for Asian restaurants, despite common representations that anything can be prepared vegetarian. I also love that Basil offers "rolled tofu" (otherwise known as yuba) - ask for it (not on the menu). It's wonderful. Another great quality about Basil is that they do not add MSG to anything. They honestly admitted that sometimes MSG is included in some of their pre-packaged ingredients, but MSG is never added. Although I don't live in the area, I swing by Basil every time I'm back in town. I've probably been a dozen times. I love the vegetarian pot stickers. I usually enjoy the hot and sour soup. Others love the spring rolls, which sometimes are better than others. If they have it - you have to ask, not on the menu - the Vietnamese Mushroom Salad is off-the-hook excellent, prepared with wood-ear mushrooms. The vegetable tempura was undeniably terrible. It's not light, but rather encrusted with batter (like fish and chips in an Irish pub). Avoid. The Seaweed Salad wasn't balanced. I've had worse, but I've had far better. There was too much radish on the bottom of the plate. General Tsao's Rolled Tofu is one of the best dishes I've tried, though the preparation has been inconsistent. Sometimes the portion is half-sized. Sometimes the sauce isn't as delicate. The last time I went (two weeks ago), they ruined it by making it spicy, when in the past, it was supremely delicious, flavored with fresh hot chilis. This was clearly a different chef, not trained with the culinary nuance of the owner who started the restaurant. The Stir Fry Medley with Rolled Tofu was Boring (that's right, with a Capital "B"), bearing no distinct flavor. While some people love the Thai dishes, the noodle dishes - particularly the Pad See Ew - was awful, flavorless, muck. I once had a peanut curry (vegetarian, with rolled tofu) and it was good enough, but I prefer their Chinese specialties. If one knows what to order and how to navigate the menu, Basil is a find. I suspect, however, that the inconsistency is the result of the expansion that Basil has enjoyed with its success. When it initially opened, it was only in Downtown Canton. Now there are outposts in Green and Wooster, and even with my limited exposure over the past four or five years, I've seen great variation in the quality (and sometimes quantity) of the preparation. At its best, Basil is a find, and I wish I could find a restaurant in the Bay Area that is as wonderful, though one still has to know which items are not among the best to order. At its worst, it's sloppy, inconsistent, and while certainly serviceable, a significant decline from the heights that one could have grown to expect. At one point, a vegetarian friend discovered previously vegetarian items were being made non-vegetarian (another reason why I always have the server confirm with the kitchen). That dark period has apparently passed, but it reflects the overall issue with Basil: inconsistency and unreliability. When it's on-point, it's five star (for the dishes I order). When it's not, it's three. With its inconsistencies, however, and the insult of not being able to rely upon quality time and again, it can feel like less. Recommended with hesitation. read more

Basil has a comprehensive Asian fusion menu and the appetizers and main dishes were good quality and served hot. Service was pretty average to weak. Despite relatively unimpressive service, we had a 20% gratuity automatically added to our bill for a table of 8. The wine list and "captian's" list were unimpressive and excessively marked up. Basil is a gem in the heart of Canton and one of my family's favorite spots to grab meet, grab dinner and socialize. Although we've been many times, this past visit was extra unforgettable. 5 stars all the way around. Service was excellent! Our server, Alex (Alexandria), did an amazing job. She was attentive, very genuine, timely and super friendly. We had 10 people in our group, and it was a busy First Friday night. The atmosphere was lively and a bit chaotic and noisy, so this made me even more impressed with how efficient and on point Alex was throughout our entire dining experience. She was honestly one of the best servers we've ever had and really set the bar high for those working in the restaurant service industry... The food was on point as always (see attached pictures), and there are so many sushi/dish/soup/salad/appetizer options to cure any craving. The wait was a bit long, so I highly recommend calling ahead and making reservations. All in all, I highly recommend Basil to anyone living in or visiting the area. My boyfriend and I came in on a friday afternoon. It was not busy. We were seated fairly quickly. When one of the employees gave us water my boyfriend thanked him and the employee just ignored him. The same employee was walking around the dining area on his phone touching his face and hair which i found to be extremely unsanitary. The staff in general was very unprofessional. They were standing around talking and laughing EXTREMELY loud in the dining area. Then while waiting on our sushi we noticed that a group of people who were seated after us got served their sushi right away when me and my boyfriend had to wait over 20 minutes for ours. Then when the sushi FINALLY arrived it was warm. In my experience sushi is not supposed to be warm. Then when i got the check i paid with a $50 bill and before i gave the tip i noticed that they did not give me exact change for my bill. read more

The good here is some of the better asian in the greater Canton and Massillon area. There is no doubt there. Every once in a while, some dishes are mediocre that are usually good. Service has been troublesome. Sometimes good, many times not so good. Here's my real issue. There is a younger girl who manages the tables at the front. On many occasions, the restaurant has been half empty and we have been told no tables were available. On one occasion, we asked about on of the tables right next to the hostess stand and one of three open tables in the bar. The other side of the restaurant was 2/3 packed. She told us it was reserved. After 1/2 of waiting the other 2 tables were randomly seated. I asked about the same table we inquired about before and another table that we had our eye on for over a 1/2 hour in the main dining room that had been open since we arrived and she politely she in so many words let me know who was in charge and they were not available. At this point, I'm about to pop. I said ok thank you. I waits for the next manager looking person to come up and politely asked him about the table and we were seated immediately at the table. Now, tonight, we walked in the bar side, 3 tables wide open. One had reservation. The bar was 1/3 full. Restaurant side was 1/3 full as well. We sat down at a table in the bar without the reservation tag. The same girl/hostess/shedevil came up and told us the table was reserved. I said, oh there is no sign. And she said they all were. Oh well, we left and are now at Napolis eating some of the best pizza in town and were the owner was holding is newly born grandaughter in his arms. Basil, you blew it. Get control of your front operation. We'll never be back. read more

Great atmosphere. Stopped in during First Friday for a bite at the bar w/ a friend after it was rec'd to us by someone from the area. Reasonably priced and well worth any seating wait- tho they do take reservations. The pad Thai was pretty good but I'm also used to spicier pad Thai dishes. This was very mild. The walnut glaze chicken was AMAZING. Very flavorful and jut enough garlic w/I being overwhelming. Generous portions on each. Had enough left over for a late night snack and lunch the next day. The food here (both from the kitchen and the sushi bar) is excellent. I personally would recommend the Thai spaghetti and the rainbow roll, but everything else I've tried has also been very good as well. The only complaint I have is that twice I've gone to dinner with friends and sat for almost 20 minutes before someone came by to even get our drink orders (we were sat at the same table in a corner both times, so maybe it was just an "out of sight, out of mind" thing?), but the manager was very apologetic and comped us our meals. Although certainly not the most fun experience to have when you're already very hungry, I recognize that human error happens, and therefore am still going to give Basil's 5 stars for otherwise excellent service and food. read more

My wife and I went there with friends for the first time on Monday night. We were very impressed. The owner sat us and the staff were helpful and on top of things. The food and drink menu are extensive with a lot of thai food and sushi as well. We all had something different and we loved it. It is great for a date night or dinner with friends. Good place to have a variety of Asian food in downtown Canton. I dropped in for lunch on a Saturday and had one of their green curry dish with pork. I've previously written good reviews about Basil, based on a number of visits. It has been a reliably good place, my go to restaurant for upscale Asian food. I don't know what happened but last night's meal was not a good one. We started with the potstickers which I have always loved and could make a meal of. We got half pork and half vegetable. They arrived cold we could have lived with but the fillings were subpar. The pork filling was actually a piece of sausage, not a blend of pork and vegetables. It had the consistency and taste of a Jimmy Dean breakfast link. The wrapper was a spring roll wrapper not the soft won ton type which can usually be cut with a fork. These were tough and looked and smelled like they had been deep fried in old oil. We sent them back and the same potstickers were returned 20 minutes later in even worse condition. I think they were put under a heat lamp which resulted in them being slightly warmer but even more rubbery. They were inedible. For entrees, I ordered the Kung pao chicken and my companion got the spicy basil stir fry. The flavors were good and the ingredients tasted fresh but the sauces were the consistency of water--a lot of water. There was no thickening or reduction making the plates more like soup than stir fry. The waiter was friendly but clearly overworked--not his fault, he just had too many tables. It made the service slow and it was hard to get his attention. We had to ask 3 times for soy sauce. Weirdly, our clothes smelled like old deep fry oil when we got home. I hope this was a one time experience but for now we've crossed Basil off our list. read more

So far so good. Been here twice and everything has been delicious. Very friendly and attentive staff in a beautiful setting. I think the Thai dishes and sushi are better than the Chinese dishes from what I have seen so far. It is nice to finally have a place with pho in Canton, but it is not as good as the great Cleveland pho choices. Some of the food reminds me of Pad Thai in Fairlawn, which is a good thing. My friends and family and I eat here once every couple of months, and we are rarely disappointed. The entrees are always delicious, the flavors so well-balanced and always presented well. Portion sizes are nice for the price, as well, so we feel as though it is worth the money to eat here. I have tried a number of the entrees, but my favorite so far is the avocado curry with shrimp. I always ask them to make it spicy for me, which just enhances the flavors. There are always big chunks of fresh avocado, the shrimp is never overcooked, and the plentiful vegetables make me feel as though I'm eating healthy! If I had to make a suggestion on one place for improvement, I would say the portion sizes on the appetizers. I think the last time we were there, we paid$4 for the crab rangoon, and there were only four served. They make theirs in egg roll wrappers folded into triangular pockets, but there was very little filling, very little crab flavor, and I felt like 4 of those for $4 was an over reach. On the other hand, the basil rolls were amazing, although still pricey at $8 for two rolls, and the Thai crispy eggplant appetizers for very, very good. So maybe it all balanced out. But I would probably never order the crab rangoon again. I can get a dozen of them from my local Chinese takeout place for $5, and I think they are better. So, again, although most of the appetizers I have had a really good, they are just pricey for the portion size, and I probably would not choose to spend my money that way in the future. That said, the entrees and other menu items are well worth the money, the ambience in the restaurant is casual and quiet, service is always at a high standard, and I highly recommend this place. Our family lives over an hour away, but we still come here on a regular basis. We could get to Cleveland in the same amount of time but come to Canton instead just to go to Basil. We've had all of the different categories of food - apps, sushi, curries, noodle dishes, stir fry, dessert - and I can promise you that they're ALL wonderful. My husband's favorite is the spicy peanut curry. I've loved each item I've tried, but the last two times I went I got the pad see ew - delicious! Also, save room for the coconut ice cream! Dairy free, super light. And their cocktails & wine/beer selection are great. I highly recommend the lychee martini. Overall, this place is fantastic. You must try it if you live anywhere in NE Ohio or are passing through. read more
