This place has an interesting concept which allows you to pick different cuts of meat to make a steak. I don't personally believe every cut can be converted into a steak but that's besides the point. For one the service we received wasn't bad. Our water was topped up regularly and the waiter did ask how the food was. The issues start with the food. Most of the food is incredibly salty. It's like everything is sprinkled with more then a little salt to finish. I got a Coulotte steak that was 8oz for $40. It came and look alright, but as I cut into it, I realized it was raw and now the medium rare I had asked. It was extremely tough. The waiter asked me how I liked the steak and I told him it's way under. He seemed a bit confused at why I would say that. After about a 5 second pause he offered to heat it up to the temperature I asked for. I was like ok, but I'm really not sure how you can reheat a steak once it's been cooked and cut into. So they attempted to reheat it, 10 minutes later they brought it back. The piece I cut was charred so that was well done and the steak was medium rare. The steak tasted completely different and as I cut into it blood just flowed right out of it. I've been to many high end steak houses and this is the first time I've ever been offered to have my steak reheated to my desired temp. Either they are inexperienced or think they are special this should have never even been offered as opposed to just having it redone completely. It wasn't even an expensive cut, considering a 17oz NY steak is $102. Mine was $40. End of the night no comp for anything not even an apology. Manager or host came to ask me if I wanted anything else, but didn't really offer me anything. This is where the service fails. Went here for the 5 course tasting menu. First they do great with covid. Reservations only and good distancing. It's quiet and quaint which is probably better with covid then before. If you only go there for grass fed and aged steak it would be well worth it. The aging process is second to none and it is flavorful and tender. I thought the first course and the steak course were the best. The others were fine but nothing exciting. The vegetables weren't great but then again we didn't go for the veggies. Oh my lord! I had the best steak in my life! Our server was super professional and was listening to every little detail about our taste! He helped us to choose right kind of meat and which sauce will go along with it . As soon as I tried the meat, I didn't want it to end... The atmosphere inside was pretty chill and it makes you want to stay there. The only one thing I didn't like tables pretty close to each other and some people felt uncomfortable sitting shoulder to shoulder with strangers. Twice now, this restaurant has refused to seat me and my group of co-founders, business owners, and security professionals. I travel to Seattle once a year for a security conference, and having eaten here once (someone else made reservations), I wanted to share that experience with friends. Last year and this year we got the same treatement - they take whatever number of people we come up with, subtract 1, and say "oh boy your party is too big, sorry maybe next time!" - no matter how many people we come in with. My husband and I came here for our anniversary dinner and enjoyed a lovely evening! To start with: the restaurant is in the heart of Capitol Hill which means...very difficult to find parking. We almost canceled our dinner plans because it took us 20+ minutes to find parking but so glad we didn't! When we checked in, our table wasn't ready yet so the host directed us to the bar right next door to wait. When we eventually got seated, we started looking at the whiteboard behind us showing all of the different cuts of meat available that night and were instantly overwhelmed. When our waiter introduced himself, he instantly told us not to look at the whiteboard; that's his job to figure out which cuts of meat would interest us! So we focused our attention to the menu on what appetizers/sides to order. Bateau also offers a set tasting menu, which we were tempted to do, but we wanted to try different cuts of meat. We ended up ordering: 1) Bateau Salad starter: Oh my goodness, the tanginess from the vinaigrette paired with the chickpeas created an awesome combination. If we could lick the bowl clean, we would have. 2) French Onion Croquettes starter: HIGHLY recommend the croquettes! They are a little bit salty but the egg yolk dip neutralizes this a bit. 3) Petite Top Sirloin meat: Our waiter recommended the top sirloin as a close alternative to filet mignon (they were already out of the smaller sizes of the filet). It melts in your mouth! 4) Flanchet meat: I have never heard of flanchet but our waiter recommended this as well and oh my goodness, I wish we ordered a bigger size. It is beyond delicious and slices like butter. 5) We actually ordered another meat but for the life of me I cannot remember what it was called... 6) Frites & Aioli side: Yummy!!! Our waiter immediately recommended the frites as a side. We were hoping we weren't insulting them for not eating as much during dinner (of course we packed it to go) but we were too blown away by the meats we couldn't fit anymore frites in our stomachs. 7) Bone Marrow Butters for the meat: Um. MUST get this butter for the meats you order! So. Delicious. The restaurant was full when we went but the tables were still distanced apart. We visit Bateau regularly and have supported the restaurant for many years. The wide diversity of aged cuts and expert cooking make this an unusual steak house. The best way, in our opinion, to enjoy this NY Times-lauded restaurant is to come with a very healthy appetite and order as much steak as you can possibly eat, and to take home anything you can't finish. The contrasts between cuts from different parts of the cow are quite educational. The folks who work here are very nice and want you to have a great time. read more

They made steak selection easy and not overwhelming. I was able to try a cut that I probably never would have tried without someone explaining to me why I would like it. I enjoyed the bone marrow butter and the preserved lemon and brown butter. Dessert we had the bread pudding which i loved. We also had the tallow cake which tipped the sweet salty balance too much to salty for my liking but im not sure if i wasnt eating the sauces in the right balance and that's why it was salty. 4.5 stars: Came here for a date night per the recommendation of a friend. My boyfriend and I LOVE steak so we were super excited. I've never been to a restaurant that butchers in-house . . . which means they have limited cuts of steak of beef and cross them off of a giant chalkboard once claimed. Our waitress was super nice and gave us good recommendations based on what kind of steak we like. We started off with the French Onion Croquettes which were savory and delicious. For dinner we split a Filet with Bone Marrow Butter (soooooo good) and a Top Sirloin cut with Lemon Brown Butter (this was also very good, but we definitely preferred the Filet). Both tasted really fresh. On the side we got the Roasted Mushrooms and the Aligot Mashed Potatoes. Tbh I'm not even a fan of mushrooms but I loved the ones we got. Everything was so delicious and we definitely want to come back to try some more cuts. The bill was surprisingly affordable for the amount of food and drinks we ordered. My only critique was that they didn't ask us (or maybe forgot to ask) how we wanted our steaks cooked; we like ours on the rarer side and it came out to be more of a medium. Also, while we were there, the hostess literally saved a guy's life. He was choking on an oyster and she immediately hopped into action and performed the heimlich on him. Came here on vacation for me and my wife's Anniversary and ready plenty of articles on where to spend date night. We came across this and glad we did. We knew we were going with one of their few cuts of steaks that they have listed on a chalk board and are crossed off when it's ordered, and the off-menu burger. When an item from a restaurant is "off menu" it's usually for good reason and this is just that. Before I get into the review, I will say, I would come back to Seattle again just to come here. The Petite Sirloin Steak with Bone Marrow Butter melted in our mouth and was cooked to perfection. Since I'm the burger guy, this review is all about the burger. For how good this is, if this was on the regular menu, I wouldn't be surprised if it became their number 1 item. It's simply, bun, onion, aioli and meat but prepared in the best of ways to create an elevated and one of a kind burger unlike anything else. The housemade challah is soft and soaks in all the juices without falling apart. The aioli is made with truffle and definitely did not lack in flavor. Every bite felt like I was being injected with truffle which I want if I see truffle as an ingredient. The caramelized onions weren't too sweet and added just a hint of freshness. Now, the beef! It's made from the steak trimmings of only the best local cuts and is prepared in the perfect fashion: medium rare, crusty char and seasoned just enough to create a juicy, tender and luxurious bite. Ambiance: I think that it is a cozy ambiance and is intimate for a generally nice experience. I will say however that the gimmick is that there is a big chalk board that has all the available cuts of steak for the night and it is not lit well and it makes it very hard to read if you want to choose a steak to get. Some focused spot lights from overhead would likely resolve this or maybe turning up the existing lighting. Food: unfortunately for 125$ a person the tasting menu leaves much to be desired. We started with carpaccio which I actually enjoyed, however my partner thought was far too salty. I will agree it was salty but I like big flavors generally so I did not mind it so much. We ordered a mushroom side next and unfortunately we were brought the wrong dish but it was also mushroom based so we still ate it. It was a mushroom parfait but it was more like a mushroom pate with bread to spread over the mushroom paste. It was generally good. Unfortunately this is where most of my compliments end. The next course was a hot dog tartine. It was very very sour and would appeal to people who like sauerkraut but if you are not a fan of sour savory flavors like myself I found it unpleasant to eat. The next course was a barley risotto. Having had risotto many times the dish did not have the texture I would expect from a risotto and tasted more like a barley stew that was undercooked. The bits were too firm more than al dente and while the flavor was ok the textures really did the dish a disservice. If I could suggest maybe changing how you label your dishes to more aptly name them to avoid confusion. The biggest sin of the meal came with the steak course we had Tri tip and sirloin. The manager stated the sirloin had more flavor than filet would have. I had joked with my partner that I wondered if we would get the left over cuts of meat that they hadn't been able to sell in the night and that is certainly how it felt. The Tri tip was cooked medium rare but was extremely tough. I don't think that they made any attempt to tenderize the meat at all. The flavor was ok but it was hard to eat so I only ate one piece. My partner had the same issue and he only ate one piece as well. The sirloin on the other hand was the worst part of the whole meal. It was cut into 4 pieces cooked with a range of cooks in the meat medium rare to well done. The medium rare piece was very bland and I was very worried about the rest. The well piece was actually inedible as it was dry and had a horrible flavor. For a steakhouse in my option this is unforgivable. When your Mai. Purpose is steak the expectation is that the steaks will be uniformly cooked and well seasoned. This did not occur. Sadly I have had beater steak at a big box steak house like Outback than here for much cheaper. I am not saying this is a good thing at all as there are many restaurants that do steak amazing in Seattle like the butchers table and ascend. Desert was some ice cream which was nice and the a second desert that was a beignet. First the beignet should have been served before the ice cream as it was not sweet at all and was very dense and savory. Definitely not my favorite desert. One of my 2 beignets also tasted charred so I don't know if it was overcooked but it was not great the other beignets was fine but still not delicious. I will say the food was plated very pretty but without the flavors and textures to back it up was very disappointing. Service: we had about three servers that were at the table at different parts of the meal. My water was never empty which was nice however at times I tried to get the staff when things were not going well they did not acknowledge us and so we sat until they were ready to come to the table. For fine dining this was not the service that I would typically expect. Once the server came to us and we had almost all the steak on the plate, she asked if we wanted I to go box. I told her the steak was not prepared correctly and that I did not feel like it was very edible the form it was presented. She got a manager and the manager did try to make it right by offering to have it remade or to get burger instead. Unfortunately, my appetite at this point was near gone due to how bad the steak had been but at least she tried to fix the issue. She did discount the meal though I did not ask her to do so which shows that she realized the issue which I appreciated. Service was again on par with what I would expect from a chain store and not fine dining. Overall opinion: this is only the second restaurant in Seattle I can confidently say I never want to eat at again. The price point is too high for what amounts to a low level of thought with food preparation and service. The steak board feels gimmicky and my over all experience was very negative mostly because of how mediocre the food was at such a high price point. I don't recommend getting the reuben mille feuille, unless you like dry corned beef. I definitely don't suggest trying the green pea sorbet, but not for the obvious reason. Their sorbet is really coarse and icy, more like a granita. Molly Moon they are not. We came here just for the steak. I asked for the most tender cuts available on their blackboard. They brought out (with minimal presentation) two perfect medium rare, juicy steaks. Those were good, but not amazing. The meat didn't carve as well, edging dangerously close to being rubbery. I'd recommend making a dinner reservation early in the night, because some cuts of meat could run out for the night, some having only 1 or 2 pieces available. We had a reservation at 6 PM and I recall some selections were already crossed out on the chalkboard. In short, service was great, and food was pretty good. It's just I have to find the food absolutely amazing to justify spending this much on it. With Bateau's price point in mind, the food overall fell a little short for me. French 75 $16: Tasty and smooth. I felt I could've downed this in one gulp, but I had to savor it to make it last through dinner. Complimentary Amuse Bouche: Our treat that evening were little cheese puffs, similar to pao de queijo. Rueben Mille Feuille $13: This was my favorite item of the night. I've had a Rueben before, but the Russian dressing here was so flavorful and complimented the brisket well. The rye crisp had a bitter aftertaste I wasn't too into, but I still enjoyed eating this. Carpaccio $13: The meat quality was good, but there was just too much going on here with the falafel, yogurt and burnt eggplant purée. The falafel was also pretty dry. Aligot $17: I googled this at the table, and basically it's cheesy mashed potatoes! It was yummy and something I want to try recreating at home, but it did feel overpriced to me, especially given the appetizers we got for $13. Maybe the cheese used is really fancy aka expensive? Jacob's Ladder 18oz $114: I ended up not really feeling the chewiness of this. In all fairness, our server did give us a heads up about it having a chew, but we wanted to try it anyways as we hadn't seen this cut elsewhere. Some parts of the steak tasted a tad over salted to me. Peach Pie a la carte $8: This dessert was part of the nights tasting menu, but our server let us know we were allowed to order it as well. It was a peach and ginger pie that was fried, pretty much like an empanada. The ice cream it came with was good and creamy as well. Fernet Flip $14: Our server was nice enough to split the drink into 2 glasses to make it easier for us to share. It was good, but not the best flip I've had. I wish the banana flavor had been more pronounced. Complimentary Meringue: A nice touch at the end with the bill, to soften up the act of spending a pretty penny on dinner. ***** My Star Ratings: 1 Star - Terrible. Just thinking about it makes me angry. 2 Stars - Meh. Unlikely for me to return. 3 Stars - OK. Open to coming back, but wouldn't go out of my way to. 4 Stars - Yummy! Went last night with my dad who was visiting me here in Seattle. I was super excited to come cause I heard a lot of great things of this places... Unfortunately I can say that this place is absolutely not worth it :( The scallops and oyster was really yum but this is a steak house and the steak (considering how much we paid) was not good :/ my dad got the rib eye and I got the Merlan. We both got it with the butter with lemon and brown butter. It was eh. My dad is an advid steak eater and he very unimpressed.. it was an ok cut but there was no flavor Very under seasonsed and it was very hard to chew! Not sure if they pan fry it or grill it. No flavor at all. My dad was telling me that the steak from longhorn is better... and long horn is a CHAIN. I was so embrassed cause I wanted to treat my dad to something special. The ribeye alone is over 150$ and for soemthing to be worth that much I'm expecting it to be good, it was eh. Interior is really cute! Service was okay. I had an allergic reaction to pistachios that were unlisted on Bateau's menu. They were in the charcuterie board sliced into the salami and were unrecognizable as pistachios. On January 3rd (about a month ago) I sent them an email letting them know I had an allergic reaction and I would appreciate if they would add a note to their menu (a simple "may contain nuts") so that I know to inquire about that item or not order it. I received no response. I also messaged their Instagram account and I received no response. I'm lucky that my nut allergies are not severe enough to be life threatening like many other folks, but it's clear from their lack of response they don't care about food allergy warnings. Unfortunately I don't feel comfortable or safe dining with Bateau again because I don't know what is going to be in their food. If you're someone with food allergies, please don't make the mistake of assuming this restaurant will keep you safe as nut allergies are very common and they won't accommodate that. read more

My husband, daughter and daughter in law went last night. My daughter had been wanting to go to this place for a while. The ambiance was very nice. It was indoor, but sort of outdoor seating too. Windows we're very big and open making it amazing. Service was very good, considering it take a long time to cook the beef. But they tell you that upfront. The quality of the food is top notch, however almost every dish was disappointing taste wise including the steak. This was a very special meal! We did the tasting menu and everything was delicious, my favorite had to be the tartare. My only complaint was the lack of explanation on the menu from the staff. When I've done tastings or specialty menus elsewhere, they tend to come with a bit of description. The restaurant is a mix of fine dining, french cafe, and steakhouse, sometimes this blend is executed flawlessly, sometimes not quite 5 stars. For instance, very little information on the actual cuts of beef, other than the portion sizes and toppings. There were some unusual cuts (at least for us) and we really couldn't tell the difference. Bateau is an excellent choice for a splurgy meal centered on steak. Everything about this place from the interior, atmosphere, service, and cooking is absolutely perfect with French appeal. The selections of various cuts of steak are served on a first-come-first-serve basis. The chalk board in the middle of the room has everything available for the day, and items are crossed off in realtime as folks order. I had the NY steak (medium rare) aged 21 days. The meat is bursting with flavors- served tender and gushing with the flow of hearty juices; each buttery smooth cut and bite just exudes with peak dry-age steak taste. And it's not just the steak that's excellent. The tartare is delicious- some mustard grains thrown in add some extra flare. Also, Renee's kale gratin is highly recommendable on the side. That creamy cheesy goodness would complement your main steak entree quite well. And wine too. Wine would go well with it. This place is looks and feels quite elegant and casual, but not in any pretentious or over-the-top fancy kind of way. The interior design is 100% on point- the restrooms are classy too! Just be mindful that the menu is on the high-end, but worth the price of admission if it's for a special occasion. If you're down to skip your car payment for the month, go ahead and reserve a table! But on serious note, for a 'treat yo self' type meal, this place earned a high spot on my list. read more

We've done a tasting menu all over the world and locally in Seattle (Tarsan i Jane, Altura, Art of the Table), so seeing Bateau mentioned on the World's 50 Best website as a Discovery restaurant made us instantly book a reservation. Having gone through most of the 2019 list for the World's 50 Best -- only to be interrupted by COVID -- we had high hopes that Bateau would make us feel like we're traveling again and eating at a top, world-class restaurant. The menu has a beef theme, not surprisingly, but for my husband it was TOO much beef and therefore one-note lacking in variety. I mean, even dessert includes meat flavor...I myself didn't have any "beef" with the menu, but I did wish there were more dishes. I'm used to 10-20 courses with tasting menus. 5 seems like a regular pre-fixed menu. The presentation wasn't anything special either. For Covid, they have all the windows open and moved the tables further apart. Is Bateau a world-class restaurant on par with the other international restaurants? No. This place is forgettable to be honest. Just another intimate hipster Seattle place that's more upscale than your average weekly restaurant. However, within Seattle it's worth a try. Tarsan Jane is much more inventive and avant garde, and we enjoyed Altura's dishes better. But I'm going to rank Bateau above Art of the Table. Sadly I think having it associated with World's 50 Best made my expectations too high. read more

You can always count on a Seattle restaurant where Renee Erikson is the Executive Chef. Bateau is no exception: bright, polished, precious, and well executed. Bateau is Erikson's latest restaurant and a unique perspective on a nose to tail steakhouse, complete with a whitewashed Scandi aesthetic, effortless service (20 percent tip automatically added into the meal) and a hyper farm to table menu. This is not a place for vegetarians. If you can carnivore, I'd recommend arriving early, as a chalkboard's worth of cuts quickly and quietly is crossed out of existence as dinner service wears on. (If you want a flavor of the ethos of farm to table before you dine, I'd check out the "in the restaurant" clip of Portlandia, and have a giggle, because there is certainly an honest and earnest attempt to aim that way here--all meat comes from a nearby farm. It's okay. Laugh at yourself a little!) Always get the bread and butter order at any Erikson restaurant. Slices of dense rye paired with slices of soft sourdough and that legendary butter. How is it that this is always the best bread order in Seattle? It is, and a wise diner knows that. Sides are simple, veggie forward (a few starters, like the sweetbreads, roll heavy) with slices of vegetables mixed with herbs, fresh olive oil,etc. Since meat is heavy, and given a generous bread order, we steered light and fresh with our sides. Steak and cocktails pair well, especially here where the cocktails are creative. Ours were petite but jet fueled, served in old school, diminutive martini glasses. The cut we ordered (Bone in Chuck Eye) is a monster cut cooked bone in. It arrived at the table bone removed and placed to the side, and sliced to share. Delicious, but spendy: about $84. We asked that it come with their lemony bone marrow butter, which added a depth of flavor. The cut was towards the chewy side. Dessert was unusual and not very sweet. While it sounded familiar (chocolate mouse) it ended up as a bit of a gritty snowball: not as smooth as we had imagined. We just dined at Bateau, four of us, and the total bill for 4 tasting menus and one bottle of wine was ... $900! And this is where my problem with Bateau lies, the prices are just absurd. They are confusing small portions with fine dining. None of the dishes warranted the price we were charged. As a disclaimer, I am French, and even though this doesn't give me any special badge, I think I can say wether or not a dish is French or not. And the fries maybe were the French-est thing we've had. Amuse bouche: 5 or so bites of food, including a tartare, a sandwich in a choux (fancy name for a cream puff), a tater tot, chickpea fries, beef liver mousse. Overall good, albeit small, but not an issue for amuse bouche. Starter: An eigth of a grilled cheese sandwich made with Emmental/Gruyere, with a salad with cheese and a very shrimpy smelling soup. Steak: This is where this was ridiculous. Each person got 3 slices of 3 different steaks, for a total of 9 slices each. There was maybe 4oz total of meat, in a restaurant that calls itself a French steakhouse. The marrow butter was overly "herbed" and you couldn't taste the meat. Fries were good. Sides: Chickpea salad and a roasted mushroom dish. Dessert: Interesting cheese ice-cream, pretty good. Bread pudding was great too, not sure how French that was... Drinks: Expensive wine and beer. Funny thing, the French beer they have is considered low quality in France, it's like they are serving Rainier. Service: Service was good, a bit of up selling. 20% surcharge apparently, but this wasn't made very clear on the bill (or maybe I missed it) Conclusion: Overall, I do not recommend this restaurant at all, and will probably be at the top of my bad Seattle restaurant experience. It is very very very over-priced for what you get. It's not fine dining, or even French. read more

It's definitely the best burger out of everything I've had in Seattle AND NYC (and nyc has its fair share of great food!). This place probably has the best burger in Seattle. It may not be on the menu, but be sure to ask your server for the burger. Our server mentioned that it is an item that they always serve, but may not always be on the menu. So although this is a steakhouse, I highly recommend coming here for the burger because it's bomb. We ordered a couple of burgers, a side mushrooms with the egg yolk, side of mashed potatoes, some steak to share, and extra bone marrow butter to smother on everything. I'd say the highlight of the entire meal was the burgers, by far. The mash and the mushrooms were delicious and on point. The steak, however, was alright. It wasn't bad but it also wasn't as mind blowing as the burger. If you're a burger lover, I highly recommend coming here. Make sure to get some fries to go with it. We thought it came with the burgers but it's actually a la carte. And although they cook the burger with some butter, having some bone marrow butter on the side to drizzle all over your burger, ain't a bad idea. read more

Showed up early for our 5:30pm reservation on 2/20/16. Pleasant reception staff. However, for nearly $130 (no alcohol, no dessert, and 20% service charge added), Bateau was just okay, At least, I scored on street parking which is a feat in itself on Capitol Hill. Heavy menus (not for arthritics or folks suffering from carpal tunnel). Knowledgeable wait staff. Starters tasty: Bateau salad ($13) and Spot Prawns ($17) but spot prawns weren't what I expected. I'm accustomed to larger ones from BC. Mains were selected off the chalkboard, would have been helpful to have a bovine diagram. However, selected 6 ounce and 8 ounce Bavettes, $20 and $26, respectively. See posted photos. Make sure to state your preferred doneness and wished there was a lighter hand with the finishing salt. Sides again tasty but smallish and pricey: Mushrooms w/ egg ($10) and Mashed Potatoes ($10). Good to check it out with the college friend, but will stick with my go to places like Jak's, Bick's, and Miller's Guild. Feeling flush check out El Gaucho, Metropolitan Grill, or those Brazilian steak places instead. Next up will be Girin on the meat-centric quest. read more

A year ago this was my favorite steak in Seattle - I can't believe how fast downhill they've gone. $50 New York Strip was half gristle, and so salty I couldn't have more than 3 bites. Offered to take a few dollars off the bill for our trouble but didn't even do that. Better steak at my local bar for a third of the price. Will not be back. read more

My boyfriend and I went here last night, and it was one of the best meal experiences we've had. The staff were all kind, and our waitress was amazing at recommending wine/cocktail pairings with the courses. She was also really helpful in Steak recommendations for us. Each course was wonderful and the meat was fantastic. Towards the end our waitress told us the kitchen staff forgot to put in our steak orders, and we could still order them but it would be a 30 min wait. We didn't mind, but decided to opt out on the wait since we wanted to be home by midnight. Not only did our waitress apologize, but she comped all of our drinks, offered us each another, and waived an additional $20.00 off our meal, which was so much more than we anticipated. We'll definitely be coming back, probably March or so to see if they have a new spring menu with different drink varieties. Also the staff is very inclusive, and the atmosphere to the restaurant and bar was calming, nicely done and very individualistic. read more

My wife and I closed our getaway week in Seattle by making a reservation here based on recommendations from friends. Unfortunately, we were seriously disappointed in the taste of the food and the ridiculous prices. We've both had 5X better steaks for a third of the cost. There was not enough salt on the steak and practically no seasonings. They were tender and well aged, just extremely bland. The appetizers were small and sub par. We only took one bite of the "wild olives" and were immediately turned off by the flavor. The croquettes were decent and probably the best thing we had. The wine was way overpriced and obnoxiously marked up. We opted to go for gelato elsewhere instead of trying the dessert. I would avoid this restaurant unless you just like burning money for the sake of burning money. read more

We went here for a birthday and wanted to love this place so much. In many ways it was wonderful, but also fell short In a couple key areas. Overall, if you come here you better like beef. It is nice it has such a focus, but may not be for everyone. They have really nice heavy menus and the atmosphere is casual and fun. We decided to do the tasting menu and added the matching drinks. If one does the tasting menu at table, all must order it. First , they offered some bread wafers with something like honey butter on top. It was wonderful. The tasting officially started with carpaccio. This was excellent also. It was matched with some nice champagne ( not my first choice to match with beef, but it worked). Next was a consumme with some beef shavings and an egg yolk that was soaked in something ( I should have taken notes). This was also superb. It was matched with one of our favorite drinks of the night, something with Madeira and gin that was heavenly. The next course was an charcuterie with meats and pickled vegetables. This was kind of to-do for us, not because the food was poor but some of it was extremely rich. It included beef tongue, liver pate, and another beef pate. We tried the tongue, but it was too much ( kudos to them for using all of cow). We finished the two other meats, but the pates were too much and we could have used more bread. This course was supposed to be paired with beer. We asked for wine and our replacement was a lovely pinot noir. Next up was a beef and pastry dish along with a reduction that was great. This was tasty, but we also very rich and collectively we were feeling a little bit of beef overload. To their credit, it was a good size (about four inches long), but could have been half. This was matched with an Italian red that we wonderful. On the recommendation of our excellent server, we decided to split a steak. This is one very unique part of restaurant that they have all of their steaks that are available on the wall, then after you order they cross it off. They have a variety of cuts and sizes, including some I never heard of. Normally I would get Ribeye, but the only choice was 21 ounces. Instead we went with the 8 oz. flank steak. Unfortunately, the steak was overcooked with no pink on the inside and was not flavored enough. Because it was cooked so much it was hard to compare the meat quality to other places, but did not seem to be level of John Howie or El Gaucho. The dessert was a lime bar covered in chocolate. We did not care for this either, the combination just did not quite work. This was paired though with kind of a lime shake that was really good. Bateau adds on mandatory 20% service charge, but this was not an issue, the service was extraordinary. The people at the next table got the burger that looked awesome and which they loved. I will definitely be back, but think I will try that next time. read more

It's a fun place with a unique steak menu. Our service was a great balance of attentiveness, but not overly intrusive. The steak tartare was delicious and roasted mushrooms almost stole the whole show. I enjoyed the steak menu and the use of the whole cow. We tried a mix of 45 day age and 120 day age cuts. I love dry aged beef and was especially looking forward to the 120 day aged. Maybe I'm more of a traditionalist when it comes to steak. Especially when you take the time to age the steak for 120 days, I think the beef should shine and be the focus. Unfortunately, the finishing butters overpowered the steaks. The first few bites were nice, then the butters really started to weigh down meal. It was hard to fully appreciate the flavors of the steak when it was drowned in so much finishing butter. read more
