I grew up with a Mother whose 50 year experience was in one retail department store.' The owner had a poster in the back that listed the 10 Commandments of Customer Service. At the bottom of the poster was this "The Customer is Always Right." So yes, I'm old-school. A young woman named Angela brought out my online order. She said it was already paid for. I explained I needed to pay for it with a gift card I'd had 1-2 years. She kept refusing my request, as if I did not understand. She was reluctant to do a refund so I could pay for the merchandise with a gift card. I explained that's exactly what she needed to do. Her body language fully expressed her disdain for this process. She maintained a smugness throughout the entire exchange, asked me to open the package. That's NOT a standard operating procedure for customer service. She proceeded with the refund, stonefaced. No conversation, and proceeded to re-charge the merchandise. Never a 'thank you for explaining'. Never an 'I'm sorry for misunderstanding this.' Her response to my frustration with having to coax the entire process was 'What's your attitude? I'm trying to help you!' Is this the new JCP customer service? She called for her manager who was equally stonefaced. The manager Alex, like Angela, was just as reluctant to complete the exchange. She kept telling me it was already paid for. After requesting that she complete the exchange ... at least five times ... AND honor the sale price, she finally acquiesced. During this exchange, I told her that Angela was a very beautiful young girl, but her beauty did not compensate for her vile passive aggressive stance. I reiterated this several times, no 'I apologize for your experience,' nothing. When I repeated the complaint, she said she'd acknowledged it, but would not have me talking ill of her employee. Ill of her employee? A complaint does not produce a rosy glowing compliment. I gave her the good with the bad. She too was dismissive. When the altercation/transaction was finished, my response was 'I can tell she gets her customer service skills from you.' So beware this duo who doesn't understand not every transaction achieves electronic processing digital perfection. There is a human being paying for the merchandise that IS allowed a preference for how to complete the transaction. Mr Penney would be so sad. He would have NEVER protected such an impetulant excuse for a retail clerk nor a store manager. Need I say more? However the store that was built on his values no longer honors that code.

The rest of the visit felt cold and uncomfortable, especially for a store that seems geared toward families, children, and pets. The bath bombs themselves are great--they smell amazing, look fun, and my kids love them. But the staff experience was a huge letdown. My son politely asked to use the bathroom, and no one responded to him. Only when I stepped in did we get an answer. It felt dismissive and, frankly, pretty rude. There are also "do not touch" signs everywhere, which makes it really hard for kids to engage with the products. At one point, my son accidentally dropped a bath bomb we were planning to purchase. I immediately informed management that we intended to purchase it, and we did. In response, the manager told me I needed to help my children get things off the shelf--implying that the accident could've been avoided if I had intervened. I understand wanting to keep displays in good condition, but this just made the experience feel even more unwelcoming and tense. It's especially frustrating because this shop is just a few minutes from my home. But honestly? I'd rather make the hour-long drive to Lush. There, the staff are kind, engaged, and actually enjoy interacting with kids. They make the experience fun and inclusive, which makes all the difference. I really enjoy the products, which makes it all the more disappointing that the customer service doesn't match the same quality. Maybe I'll try visiting a different location and hope that experience is much better. This store has potential--but the customer service needs serious improvement. Until that happens, we won't be back. Ex: The owners response and tone to my honest review is not only condescending it's emotionally charged, retaliatory, and disproportionate. I'm disappointed but not surprised by the continued defensiveness from the owner of Magnolia Soap and Bath Co. After leaving an honest and respectful review based on my experience as a paying customer, I received a direct response that was not only accusatory but also personally targeted--naming me and criticizing my children in a way that felt retaliatory and unnecessary. Rather than acknowledge or address my concerns with any professionalism, the owner has now doubled down, claiming their response is "valid." This only reinforces my belief that respectful customer feedback is not welcome here, and that public shaming is being used as a tool to silence criticism. For any families considering visiting this location: I encourage you to read both the original review and the owner's responses carefully. Customer service should be grounded in professionalism, empathy, and accountability--not personal attacks. I stand by my review, and I hope this business reflects more carefully in the future on how it responds to customer experiences.

As I had been in another location out of state, they answered a few non soap product questions that we had. Checkout was fast and they gave us a sample of the new laundry scent booster which was a nice extra. Good to have a local location that offers the soaps and products without all the harsh chemicals that the mass chains put in that iritate the skin.
