Creative cocktails with a prohibition theme (including low ABV options), gourmet bar bites (don't sleep on the truffle agnolotti!) and awesome servers (Charity & Alan are two MVPs on the staff). Then the bouncer finally stepped in front of me and said "THIS IS THE BAR." Ambiance is awesome. It is the best thing that Bathtub Gin has going for it. It's a great place to grab a drink with a friend or a date. If you're looking to impress someone with how cool you are, this is definitely a solid option on the West Side. The cocktails -- average. If you're looking for a good gin cocktail, I would recommend the Winslow a little more. We got a Ramos gin fizz and Mary's cocktail. It was better made than you would get at a bar not focused on gin but there wasn't anything standout. I recommend BG for the ambiance more than anything. Service was decent for a place so crowded. I do love a secret entrance. You'd never know this place was here unless YOU KNOW. I walked by it, had to look it up, and eventually found it. Once the door opens, you walk into the darkness, the DJ is playing great tunes. As you walk through, there is a bathtub. Go ahead, sit in it, take a pic. It looks like a copper claw foot tub. Copper is the color of choice for this place and it looks great with the dark wood. It's good to have a table, there's a perfect table straight in the back. It's a little booth. You can see everything. The drinks are slightly more expensive than they need to be. There are 50 drinks on the menu with 2642577 ingredients in each. You can order bowl sized drinks for hundreds of dollars and 6-10 friends. Oh yeah, let's all sip from this bowl of the plague or the big herp that one of ya friends didn't tell you about. I'll pass on that, expensive AND dangerous. I tried a chicken finger or whatever. It was good! Now the major issue here is the billing. If I say it once, I'll say it 1 million times. Never add a gratuity to my bill if I'm paying for ONE person. That simple act ruins the entire evening AND this review. Adding 20% is not a good look. How about a tip suggestion at the bottom of receipts? Are the people visiting this establishment not great tippers? Change locations!!! Find a better way. You'd get more money from me without that. Loved everything about it, including the not-so-secret hidden doorway in the back of a coffee shop, or was it a bodega? I don't know for sure....it didn't really pop out from the street. (I guess that's the whole point.) Drinks were strong and good. I had one gin drink and one bourbon drink. We were there early on a Friday evening, but the place was pretty packed. Nice place, and fairly concealed entrance. The bouncer and hostess standing around kind of gave it away pretty quick though. The drinks were just so so for me, and I'm generally pretty fond of gin. Came here early in the afternoon to beat the rush and opted for the bar seating. Plenty of room to spare still at that time of day. Ambiance was nice and noise level was low, which definitely was a plus to help carry a conversation. Tried the gin-gin cup and the corset. The corset was made pretty spicy with the heavy handed ginger. The gin-gin cup was refreshing, but no fireworks beyond that. Decided not to go for another round since each drink was priced at ~$16. Super fun speakeasy hidden behind a coffee shop. Loved the atmosphere but it is super dark. They give you printed menus that look like newspapers but it's so dark I had to turn my phone's flashlight on to read it. This is a speakeasy bar in the heart of NYC specializing in gin, the predominant drink in the United States during the Prohibition-Era 1920's It is hidden inside a cafe. The drink was ok. I had a 1910 martini. When we first got there we were waiting in a short line. I was really anticipating to be in a nice jazzy bar, but when we got In, the place was packed, the music was loud and they were playing hip hop and other trendy mainstream music. I was so disappointed because it was supposed to have a speakeasy theme. The only speakeasy thing about this place was the gin I ordered. Then we met these nice group of nice people who just came from a funeral. They were also visiting from out of town and are all siblings or related to each other. My fiancé and I had dinner reservations here last night. Bathtub Gin is very serious about their reservations. I guess it's because you don't put a credit card on hold and they want to be sure that you're still coming. I received a confirmation text the day before, a phone call the day of, and a text again 30 minutes before my reservation time. When I received the call I was informed of a 15 minute grace period for the reservation and that we have the table from 6 until 745 pm. Initially, I made this reservation hoping to see the burlesque show while having some drinks and food. Online there is no set time for when the burlesque show starts and only says "Sunday night". However, when we arrived for our reservation we were informed that the show only starts at 9:45 pm and our reservation doesn't cover that. We were seated at the small, I mean tiiiiny, two- seater tables. We were squeezed in super close to nearby couples. I think it's better to come here on a double date or with a group of friends. This way you will be seated in the booths which are much more spacious and seemed way more comfortable. Besides that, the interior decor is lovely. Oh, and from the exterior, it has a true speakeasy vibe. We looked around not sure of where to go, until a man popped out and asked if we're here for Bathtub Gin. My fiancé and I ordered 3 rounds of drinks each and loved every single one of them. I was already starting to plan our next visit back while we were still there! The cocktails were some of the best I've ever had and well worth the $16 price. We were pleasantly surprised by the food and ordered a bunch of small plates to share. We ended with smores for dessert. Of course with the amount we ordered we went a bit over our 7:45 PM reservation cut off but nobody said anything or rushed us out right on the dot. By around 8ish it started to get super packed. At this point we were kinda glad we enjoyed our drinks before it got too crowded and don't even know if we would have had as enjoyable of a time later in the evening to see the show. I really don't know what to make of this place. I'd like to give it 3 stars, but we keep ending up here so they must be doing something right. We roll in late after having dinner out, the show is always in progress. We don't wait in line but we don't see very much, either. This time they forced us to check our coats - not sure why. The crowd is ten deep at the bar. It is insanely frustrating to hear everyone yelling and cheering and not be able to see what all the fuss is about. If they charged a cover, we'd be finished. But they don't, so like idiots, we keep coming back. Service at the bar is prompt and courteous. The crowd is diverse, fairly friendly, and turned on - all dressed up with nowhere to go, essentially. Still, it's an interesting energy. We don't care enough to make a reservation or get there earlier. We just drink a lot of Bourbon and hold hands walking home. read more

From when we first walked in the staff was extremely rude. The bouncer asked me to dump my coffee and was angry that I wanted to finish it. He asked to see ID and then did not check it. The person at the counter of the coffee shop out front was frantically cleaning and throwing mats over the counter. They held everyone outside the bar in the coffee shop for whatever reason even though we had a reservation. Then we walked in and were forced to pay $6 for coat check. Coat check is mandatory so it should be complimentary. To top off this uncomfortable experience, the hostess who sat us said "you have this table until 7:30". I made a confused face and she said "it's two hours, that's enough" in an annoyed tone. But who are you to tell me how long I'm allowed to sit at your bar?? Especially, since I made a reservation. This speakeasy has an amazing decor. The drinks program were great. I enjoyed the speakeasy vibes that this establishment offered. Reservations are highly recommended during the weekend. I came on s Friday and I was glad I made the reservations ahead of time. They have a strict no-show policy - there is a 30 minute grace period for those who show up late for their reservations. I tried the El Gaucho and The Bathtub Tonic. The Bathtub Tonic tasted like a fancier rendition of a regular Gin and Tonic. It was nothing special. The El Gaucho on the other hand is a drink that I would highly recommend. It's strong but has the perfect balance between the sweetness from the syrup, the grapefruit bitter, the mint and the taste of gin. The only issue I had was the service from the servers. They weren't the most hospitable servers you will meet. It seems like they were annoyed at how busy the establishment was. This was why I rated this speakeasy three stars. However the bathroom attendants were very friendly. I would recommend this place for tourists. If you are a local New Yorker, there are much better speakeasies in NYC. read more

Had a great evening of burlesque and drinks. This was our first burlesque show. We thought it was tasteful and fun and not at all uncomfortable. They circulated envelopes for tips after the show. The speakeasy interior is plush and - as all speakeasies - there are no tvs. The drinks were excellent - although gin is their focus, they do serve other spirits as the cocktail base; one in our party had shots of tequila. My friend and I had planned a fabulous "treat yo self" Galentine's weekend in NYC over a month in advance. With images of glamorous, sunny rooftop decks, strolls through the High Line, and Instagram-worthy views, we hopped on our respective buses from our respective cities to meet in the middle for a gal pal weekend of fun. Imagine our disappointment when it POURED rain the ENTIRE time we were in Manhattan. Since rooftops and parks were out of the question, we set out for rainy day activities. After a jaunt through Chelsea Market, we whipped out our Yelp apps to find nice spot for a midday cocktail away from the chaos of the tourists. We saw reviews for Bathtub Gin, and let Google Maps lead the way. Not realizing we were heading for a speakeasy, we walked right past where Google Betty was telling us to go. Finally, I suggested taking a look at the building number, which led us to a coffee shop. When we walked into the tiny coffee counter, we were greeted by a young girl who checked our IDs, bagged our umbrellas, and pushed the magic button to send us into a sexy, 1920's lounge, hidden behind the wall. We were absolutely transported upon entry. We both looked at each other, wide eyed in amazement. This was my first speakeasy experience, and I felt a little like a Bond Girl. Being noon on a Sunday, the place was barren, maybe 5 other patrons. We sat at the bar, and both felt called to try the Gin Gin Cup. Any time honey, ginger, and alcohol are swirled together, I'm in. Topped with fresh sage, the drink was deliciously refreshing and enough to give me a little buzz; a beautifully crafted cocktail. Be prepared to spend about $16 before tip for a good cocktail, but trust me, it's worth it. Coming here for a boozy drink and banter with the bartender was among one of our more memorable NY activities, and the atmosphere cannot be beat. Of the New York cocktail bars, Bathtub Gin seemed like a good spot to check out when a friend was visiting last weekend: We could make a reservation way in advance and not have to worry about a big wait. But I ended up being a bit disappointed by the drinks and the ambiance. My friend and I arrived outside of the coffee shop at the time of our reservation. There were several other people waiting outside, so we immediately knew right where to go. We had to wait there for a few minutes and were then let inside, even though the third person in our party hadn't come yet -- so that was nice of them.. The space they had us sitting at was CRAZY small for three people. It's a good thing the third person in our party was my boyfriend, because we were practically sitting on top of each other the whole time. I mean, I like sitting near him and all, but it was cramped and actually physically uncomfortable. Also, the whole place was really loud - as loud as Apotheke, but the look of the room itself suggested that they were attempting to give it more of an intimate vibe. The loudness just didn't really work with the rest of the space. For my first drink I decided to stick with an old friend, mezcal, so I ordered the only mezcal-based drink on the menu: the Cantaro (Mezcal, cucumber extract, fresh lime juice, egg white, agave sage solution, fresh sage). The drink was gorgeous (see photo), but flavor-wise, I just wasn't that impressed. The rest of the ingredients diminished the flavor mezcal rather than enhancing it. My second drink, the Dandy Cocktail (woodford reserve bourbon, cointreau, dubonet rouge aperitif wine, angostura bitters, orange oils), was spirit-forward. I enjoyed it, but it wasn't very remarkable, either. I think my boyfriend mostly felt the same way about his drinks, although my friend liked hers. She got something gin-based and fruity; I tried a sip of it and it was indeed pretty tasty. Maybe you just gotta go for the gin drinks here...I would have, had I traditionally not hated gin so much. :/ Ah, by the way, we also ordered a cheese plate (one of the firm ones), which was pretty good. I am probably being a bit hard on Bathtub Gin because I'm comparing it to other NY speakeasy-style bars, and in that book, it just doesn't quite match up. Such a cute speakeasy! Visited this place over 4th of July weekend and I absolutely loved it here! The front is a façade of a coffee shop and when you enter through, you'll find yourself to be in a very dimly lit bar with booths and tables lining the walls and a huge bathtub in the center. Of course, my friends and I all sat in the bathtub to take a pic! -that's what it's there for! The décor was fabulous, service was good, drinks were boozy and a good variety, place was open late. Crowd was friendly and diverse ethnic backgrounds. Place is very loud- with DJ playing music and chatter. There wasn't much of a line outside the door to get in, nor did we have trouble with the doorman. I'd definitely visit here again -if I lived in NYC. read more

A few mixed feelings about this place, as I had high-ish expectations for this speakeasy and left underwhelmed. My group of 4 arrived at 8:30pm on a Saturday night and were able to snag standing space with a little round table near the door (no tables available, and we didn't make a res ahead of time). So, note to self for next time: make a res. First impressions with the bouncer in front were meh and off-putting -- it was a snowy/icy rain kind of night and upon approaching the door, he told us to step aside and wait in line (there was no one else in line). My husband and I made "a line" and stood there in the icy rain that was coming down, while the bouncer proceeded to talk to his friend -- I guess they were in the middle of catching up and he couldn't be bothered with assisting customers. It was annoying to say the least. After he finished his convo, he decided to check our IDs and let us into the entryway to check our coats. Mandatory coat check ($2 per item and you take a photo of your tag#). My husband also had to check-in his hat, so FYI. Once inside, things were fine. Nothing particularly special stood out to me about the space; it has a dark, cool vibe to it, but it's loud and not easy to carry a convo. Overall, we enjoyed our time there, but not sure I'd come back for $$$ drinks. Additionally, my husband noted that the bartender he ordered with was impatient and rude, and gestured to hurry up with his ordering -- which is not how anyone would want to be treated. Anyways, Bathtub Gin is a speakeasy that specializes, unsurprisingly, in gin cocktails. There's also a bathtub in the middle of the room that I guarantee will be filled with drunk girls taking selfies at some point during your visit. This is a very cool place to impress a date, friends visiting from out of town, or anyone into the speakeasy experience. Be warned that BG is very much a scene, and that you should definitely make a reservation if visiting at prime hours (or anytime, really). It was completely packed when I visited on a Friday night, and very very loud. But the drinks are very very good! I tried the Garden Swizzle, which was a refreshing blend of gin, cucumber, mint, and absinthe. It wasn't too sweet and very strong. Cocktails that knock your swing socks off, live music, dim lights; you'll definitely feel the 20's speakeasy vibes. But with a name like Bathtub Gin, you can't leave without sipping that giggle juice and marveling at the intricate flavors that highlight the speakeasy's namesake. I liked the set-up and atmosphere, felt as if you can bring 5-7 people here unlike other speakeasies which can get cramped quick. I wish the menu was easier to understand - felt it was way too over complicated. I get it that these are not run of the mill well drinks at some Irish pub, but just did not enjoy the set-up or maybe I was too drunk to think. Ordered the Harlequin Cocktail- not a bad choice but that frothy egg white made it hard to down (guess that was a good thing in my case). I have not been to this sad little bar in quite some time, and now I totally remember why. I stopped in with a friend for a post work cocktail this evening. The place was moderately busy, but not busy enough that I couldn't get a table. My guest and I had our first round, which was an overpriced, small drink with way too much ice. Yeah....I get it. It's a speak easy. Yawn.... So, not quite sure why in retrospect, but we decided to have a second round. We placed our order with our apathetic server, who looked like he'd rather be doing anything else but serving drinks. As a side note, we saw him take orders from the two tables next to us subsequent to taking our order. Over the next 10 minutes, I observed the tables that ordered after us receive their drinks. We then waited about another 5 minutes to call our server over. We asked him where our drinks were and also indicated that everyone around us that had ordered after us had received their drinks. He just mumbled to be patient that they would be coming soon. Of course, he did not go to check on the status of our drinks; he just wandered around the bar aimlessly. Mind you the bar was pretty empty at this point. So empty that there were two bartenders standing behind the bar were simply chatting, doing all but nothing. The ridiculous wait for our drinks at this point combined with the insulting service and rather drab setting was just not worth it any longer. So, we called our server over and said that we simply wanted our check and to cancel our drink order. He then proceeded to ask us why. I simply pointed to the bartenders doing nothing while we still did not have our drinks. He still did not seem to understand the problem. He then stomped off in a snit to get us our check and soon after returned to tell us in an annoyed fashion that he had to have a manager remove the second round of drinks that we still had not received. Whatever. A minute or two later, an unimpressive, yet smug man not capable of managing a hot dog cart (yeah.....think about that for a second), approached us and asked what the problem was. We explained the situation, and then pointed to the slacker bartenders and the relatively empty bar. His response was and now get this.....that there must have been "a clerical error." Seriously.....I mean SERIOUSLY?!?! He obviously could have cared less that the bar was ill managed and that his staff was incompetent. He seemed not to care that we had an awful experience under his watch and offered no solution to the problem; not even an apology. Enough was enough at this point. I simply paid the bill and got the hell out of this extremely tired, bar whose time has long since passed. So if you're looking for a tourist trap from yesteryear, you might enjoy this place. Bartender extremely unprofessional and rude. During our entire time at the bar there was no engagement from the bartender with any bar guests. A big no no! I am a professional in hospitality industry to know that's the basics in any decent bar. That are just doing monotonous machine work pouring drinks, swiping your cards while avoiding eye contact or greetings. Very Pricy drinks for what they are and very mediocre decorations in this place. Not worth the hype. I came here on Tuesday after a coworker gave the recommendation with some friends visiting from California. It was not what I expected. It's a speakeasy with an entrance behind a fake coffee shop. The place is dark and cozy. We had a table next to the golden bathtub. I wasn't expecting any shows and thought it was just a nice place for drinks. A magician came in first and played some few tricks and interacted with the customers. And later the burlesque show started. Again totally I didn't expect this in a speakeasy on Tuesday night. The crowd was classy and the service was friendly. The drinks were yummy. I didn't try their food. So there are only burlesque shows on Tue and Sun night and Sun brunch. We loved this place before the pandemic but tonight left us sick to our stomach literally and underwhelmed. We were one of five or so tables on a Sunday night and we got three appetizers. All were flavorless and covered in too much breading. The fried olives we thought could be a fun thing to try as we never had heard of that. Four pieces came out the size of your hand and I thought Oh okay so it's like a fried dough ball filled with olives? No just one olive in the middle and all bread. The table next to us sent theirs back noticed. We would have loved to order a second round or even a third but no one ever came back to our table. Empty drinks and empty waters most of the experience. The playlist was bizarre. 80s songs like Poison and stuff- maybe a themed night? Would have loved something like more to the speakeasy theme.
