Steve and I recently tried Battery Steele Brewing and we enjoyed the beer that we had with little hesitancy. Little Flume was the name of the beer we had and was a Session IPA. There seems to be a series of Flume IPA'S in which most of them are more potent than the little version as they have double and triple IPA'S with the Flume title. We personally liked the Little Flume because like most Session beers it's very easy to drink and if so inclined probably spread out through the day as that is the idea with having this beer type. Flavor features to look for with Little Flume are citrusy, hoppy and subtle. Went to five that day, and Battery Steele was the smallest but probably also my favorite with respect to beer quality. (Bare bones in terms of decor/frstivities/games, but that's fine by me). I brought a couple home with me, and both were well received. On that note, I think I'll have one now... Parking at the breweries in the area, with the exception of Allagash, was limited. Car pooling is thus recommended, or better yet, an Uber. With all the spots to try, you'll probably end up drinking a little more than you may have intended anyway! read more

I love living in a city that houses good, quality craft breweries. However, because there are new breweries popping up all the time, it's sometimes challenging to keep track of all of them, and it's hard to seek out the ones of quality. One Saturday, a group of friends and I decided to commit to some day drinking. At a friend's suggestion, we started our venture at Battery Steele. They had about eight beers on draft. I was able to try their Avalon, which was one of their IPAs. It was juicy with notes of peach and other fruits, which was refreshing. However, my friend had ordered the Lark, which has a description of waffle, granola, and maple syrup notes. I tried a sip of his beer and I was instantly regretting not getting a full pour of Lark. The inside of Battery Steele feels very industrial, but very laid back with picnic benches throughout the venue. The exterior of the brewery is filled with beer tanks, giving it a relaxed vibe. Having gone at 1pm, it was fairly quiet, which was added to the chill vibe. Overall, Battery Steele is a great addition to the Portland beer scene. My buddy and I strolled in and went for a flight. Being an IPA fan, I focused on the Fluke series, trying out three of them. They were impressive, with the Flume 3 (cubed) stealing the spotlight. Good beer! Battery Steele usually has 2 or 3 drafts and cans, when available. Juicy, big IPAs are their standard brews and recently released an "ice cream" stout that drew a big crowd. The music playing was similar to elevator music so that's one area that could have been improved from my visit. It's worth giving a chance if your in the Riverside area. read more

Tried two of their beers and loved it. What's makes this brewery so unique is that is so closes to three other breweries. This was the last stop on our adventure and we loved tasting Battery's beer. It's on the back of the industrial building so if you do visit make sure to walk around the parking lot. Your mouth will be pleased. read more

Flume and Kineo were the two beers I had at this fairly new brewery to the Industrial Park. Flume was a DIPA and Kineo was an IPA. Flume was outstanding and Kineo was a solid IPA. Space, like all breweries in this part of town, is petite but enjoyable because it helps be able to interact with the staff. Nice little swag area so had to grab a glass to bring home with me. My husband and I tasted the Flume and Avalon which are both double IPA's. Both beers were outstanding and the pours were reasonably priced at $2 for 5 oz. Our pourer, Jake, was cheerful, attentive, and talkative. This was my first experience trying a Battery Steele beer, and unfortunately probably my last. We walked inside and were instantly hit with a putrid smell.. we almost couldn't wait in line it was so bad. We each ordered a beer and neither of us were impressed. I don't recall the name of the one I ordered but it said something about notes of melon but it definitely didn't have any fruitiness to it. My boyfriend who likes almost every beer also didn't finish his. After a while we realized there had been a food vendor which must have left that lingering smell. We came to Battery Steele after we decided that waiting in line at Austin Street was taking too long. The brewery itself was relatively crowded on a Saturday afternoon, with most of the indoor seating spots taken (it was lightly raining outdoors, making the benches out there less ideal). Despite the crowds, we didn't have to wait more than a few minutes to grab samplers at the bar and plant ourselves around one of the support beams that (thoughtfully) had a small counter built around it to put beers on. Unlike other micro/craft breweries that feel the need to have every style on hand, Battery Steele does a lot of IPAs, advertises it proudly on the signs leading in, and they do a really good job with it. While Flume (the flagship double IPA) is excellent, I found the Onsight IPAs, which are made with a rotating hop mix, to be really interesting to drink. There's not a huge difference between #7 and #8 (the versions available), but I liked the finish on #8 a bit more, as it added a bit more character to the drink than the straightforward finish on #7. All of these are hazy New England IPAs, though, and as it's my favorite type of beer, I really enjoyed the drinks here. So why the mark down? In short, while I enjoyed the overall ambiance and the accessibility of the place (you can wander quite close to the brewing tanks themselves), the music is way, way too loud. With high ceilings and the 'garage' doors thrown open, we had to spend most of our time yelling over the music (and everyone else) to have a conversation. Nothing wrong with having a nice atmosphere, but it makes chilling / hanging out a bit less enjoyable when the decibel level is the same as being at a nightclub. Outside of that, though, the beer here is better than the others I partook in last time I visited this complex, and I would definitely recommend a stop by here when checking out the beer scene in Portland. read more

This fru fru NEIPA thing has gotten out of hand. It is a cool place, but they are one of the highest prices of all the over-inflated microbreweries. Most places charge $8 for a flight of four beers at 4 oz each. This place doesn't have flights, so they charge $3 per 4 oz sample. So if you buy 4 of them, like your getting a flight w/o the wooden box, that's 16 oz of beer (a pint) for $12. That's ridiculous. And let's face it, all these uber cool NEIPA's all taste about the same. No matter where you go. read more

Located in a cluster of some high quality breweries and where some of the Best of Maine Breweries began. Battery Steele has some big shoes to fill because of the location and it seems they are doing quite well. They constantly sell through their beer supply and need to close the taproom often. The taproom is on the smaller side but is setup nicely with a lot of brewing equipment in sight. Giving a nice view of exactly where the beers you are drinking were made. With a few on tap offerings at a time (2-3) as well as cans to take home, you can't go wrong. With a heavy focus on IPA's it is a good spot for fans of hoppy beers. I tried out their Double IPA called Flume and their 3rd entry of experimental IPA series Onsight #3. Both were juicy and hoppy while also being well balanced. Looking forward to going back and trying more of their brews. A must stop specifically for Battery Steele as well as the surrounding breweries in the area for beer lovers. read more

This is a small brewery in the same industrial park as Allagash. Since they are a small brewery only two beers were available for tasting, Avalon double IPA and Flume double IPA. Both beers were tasty so we are glad we stopped. We bought some of the Flume to bring home to let our friends try. Pleasant surprise finding this place at the recommendation of the bartender around the corner at Foundation. Went on a Wednesday afternoon, they had a few outdoor tables which were full of friendly beer enthusiasts. We enjoyed chatting with the crowd while we sampled the 8 beers on tap. Beers were all excellent. Favs were Flume double IPA and Firn pale ale. This place is not fancy as far as the taproom goes but it doesn't matter. Unpretentious atmosphere and solid beer.
