Dr Bauer has a bad temper- he needs to reel it in- I had multiple appts set up- some of them were unnecessary and could have been combined with previous appts - then he would act like I had a problem if I said anything about it- bizarre at times like why would I not like to come in every week? As if I have no life- he was also late several times with no phone call letting me know - Many things he would tell me were not true or differed from the previous visit. If I brought this up or something that was bothering me with work that had been done he would explode in front of the whole office . Really unprofessional- he had the nerve to tell me I was the worst patient he has - normally I would have walked straight out the door FAST after the first insult but I needed to get the work done - I will now be moving on!! I know Dr. Bauer for over a decade and today I trusted him to extract my tooth #13. (The tooth has 3 roots) It was a relatively painless procedure making a way for an implant. He is expensive and accept only top top tier insurance, but you get what you pay for. Few hours after the procedure I got a call asking how was I feeing after tooth extraction. Where to start? With the good: the cleaning was excellent, Nicole is lovely and very thorough. The mouthwash dispenser in the bathroom was cute. The office is cramped but more updated than many offices. The bad: Dr. Bauer. Knowledgable? Sure. Offensive? Absolutely. I was mansplained to about fluoride (more on this later) and felt very taken aback by his bedside manner. I'm all about helping maximize my insurance reimbursement for you but I do not like being forced into services I do not need just because my plan covers preventive and Xrays without a copay. It drains my yearly benefit in the event I actually do need work. For example: I have no wisdom teeth, no other teeth missing, and no complaints - I didn't need a panoramic X-ray for probably ~$300. I haven't had a cavity in more than 15 years and never get fluoride at my cleanings, making me low risk for cavities - current research finds no benefit of fluoride varnish over simply drinking city water. I even said at the beginning that I didn't want it because I am low risk and it's not covered. "Is it a cost issue?" (it's $53 out of pocket) None of your business and no, I just prefer to use my flexible spending on services I actually need. Especially in this climate, is pushing fluoride on every single patient really the hill to want to die on? If you decide to go here, just know that despite the very hard sell, not everyone needs fluoride. read more

My partner and I have been seeing Dr Bauer for a few years now. He is kind gentle, caring and contentious. His office and staff are very professional and has one of the best hygienists in all of NYC. He gives me, sells me, pitches fluoride to me. I get it every time. You are going to the dentist to have healthy teeth. It is proven that fluoride, besides brushing, is one of the best things you can do to your teeth. He's a dentist offering to sell you preventive treatment. So he gets called a thief for that??? Geez its not like he's pushing opioids or a membership??!! If you don't like the dentist experience but need to go anyway, of course you'll be mad at the Dr. We are all human so mistakes happen. I know the difference between bein rushed and a number in medicine/dental office versus caring, taking time to address issues at hand and feeling valued as a patient. Used to be good at first. It you have more complex problems (root canals, etc).... probably fo to a different practice. He will recommend work that is probably not the best long term solution but a good "short term" solution for his practice (make new crowns , etc). To start, I'm someone who is fortunate to be born with great teeth, no cavities, healthy gums. Cleanings twice a year. No problems. I went to this practice for about 4-5 years. The hygienist Nicole was always lovely, professional and did a great job. It's very spa like. Very comfortable. The issue was with Dr. Bauer, who from the beginning pushed the extra (pay out of pocket) fluoride treatments (unnecessary at my age), followed by a suggested cosmetic procedure (covered by insurance!) to remove white stains from where my braces had been (didn't work, teeth in fact now more transparent in that area), to then diagnosing me with periodontal disease that needed special cleanings/scaling every 3 months - not covered by dental insurance. I suddenly started questioning whether I was being had. It was incredibly disappointing to feel I couldn't trust a dental professional. I found a new dentist who confirms I do NOT have periodontal disease and that I DON'T need scaling and cleaning every 3 months for hundreds of dollars, nor do I need painted on fluoride varnish for extra $$, and suddenly my dental bills are what they've always been, prior to Bauer Dental. When I can't trust whether a professional is being straight with me, I must move on. read more

I have been going to Dr. Bauer for 2 yrs. Each time I visit, there is an up sell pitch. I have been in sales for 17+ years, so I don't mind but today was just insulting. I am not the only one considering the previous review. I know he is a good dentist, but to run a good business that is just taking off you cannot constantly be selling to your clients and then get condescending if they don't buy into it. Regular cleaning turns into: - I need to see you every 3months for cleaning which is not covered by insurance. He said to just pay extra 2-cleaning through my Health card as if thats not costly - Then Dr. Bauer started to explain that 99% of NYC gets the fluoride treatment from him and I am fluoride deficient. It's a supplement that insurance doesn't pay for, I could hear another pitch coming. I said I don't like the sticky fluoride, he explained its prevents cavity. I responded that I don't have cavities and never had a cavity before. So he made a snippy comment by saying "I will be happy to do your fillings next time then". Really, thats a nice way to put off your customer who didn't buy into your up sell. I thought I had a good dentist near by but will look for another option. read more

I actually thought that Dr. Bauer was pretty good at first. But really he is just really good at making you panic and get care you don't need. I had first gone to Dr. Bauer after I had some sudden pain in my wisdom tooth. It started the day after I had gone to a different dentist, so I didn't want to go back to the same one. Big mistake. Dr. Bauer pulled out all my wisdom teeth. I was looking at the removed teeth, and noticed an odd hole in the problem one. Only then did he mention that it looked like a filling had fallen out of the tooth. I now know that fillings falling out are pretty common, and that I could have easily had it replaced. Never was this mentioned to me. After that experience I should have just walked away. But he had told me at that visit that I needed a whopping four fillings. Keep in mind this was just two days after I had seen another dentist, who, while he may have knocked out a filling, said my teeth were just fine as far as cavities go. A few months later I was losing my dental insurance, so I went back to get those fillings while I had the chance. He put in the four fillings, but they were hurting for a while after. I went back to have them adjusted twice, but they were still hurting. At this point I decided to go to another dentist. I got the x-rays from before I had the fillings too. The next dentist looked at the x-rays and told me that maybe only one of the teeth really needed fillings. Also, he said the fillings Dr. Bauer had put in were the worst fillings he had ever seen. One of them was so close to the nerves that if the filling ever falls out (and they tend not to last forever) I will need a root canal. On this last point, every dentist I have seen in the last three years since has instantly noticed how bad that filling is. Everyone seems to agree that Dr. Bauer is a salesman. I had a wisdom tooth removed by Dr. Bauer on 9/20/2017 and it was one of the worst experiences of my life. After the tooth removal, I reached out to Dr. Bauer multiple times telling him that something wasn't right and I was still in extreme pain. He said that it was normal and continued to prescribe me 800mg Ibuprofen for weeks and that it will go away over time. I asked if I should have an X-Ray which he said was not necessary and sent me home. After repeating this process 4-5 times, I told the doctor that he has to re-open the wound that I can not bear the pain anymore and something must be done. He opened up the wound and found a large piece of bone/tooth that he did not take out during the original procedure (see picture). There was no way this was coming out without re-operating and it was causing infection. I understand that there are complications with any surgery but this was complete negligence on the doctor's part to not take an X-ray and completely dismiss my concerns after multiple visits and complaints. This secondary procedure was done on 10/30/2017 over a month after the original surgery date despite me complaining of extreme pain. After the second operation on 10/30/2017, my conditions did not get better and I was still extremely sick and in unbearable pain -- the prescribed antibiotics were not helping at all. I contacted the doctor on 11/1/2017 to ask him if he could see me that it was an emergency and I was getting worse and was told the doctor was on vacation and that nothing can be done until he was back. I said that there has to be another dentist that can see me in the office and I was told that there are no availabilities and she will get back to me. After not being able to get in touch with Dr. Bauer, I made an appointment with an oral surgeon to take a look at what was going on with my mouth and cause of the pain. The dentist said that the procedure was done in an unusual spot and it looked infected and very bad. He took an X-ray to get a better idea of what's going on and said that he thinks there still might be some pieces of bone/tooth in the area but wasn't completely sure from the X-Ray and that I needed to wait a few days for it to heal more and gave me medication and home remedies to help with the pain. On 11/6/2017 (5 days later!), someone from Dr. Bauer's finally reached out to me (via text message) and said that I can come into the office if I was still having issues. At this point, I no longer wanted anything to do with Dr. Bauer and was using my new oral surgeon moving forward. Shortly after this text, I went back into the oral surgeon's office and he took out a SECOND piece of bone/tooth that was still in my mouth (see picture). Since then, my mouth has fully healed and everything has been great ever since. I would avoid Dr. Bauer at all costs for any type of dental procedure. read more

I needed to see a dentist immediately because I had a medical emergency, and Dr. Bauer's office was close to my home. Instead of taking care of the immediate problem, he tried to pitch me all sorts of rather elaborate procedures and services. I was obviously against spending any more money than I needed, and when I refused he became very condescending -- as if to insinuate that I cannot afford his services. I live on the Upper East Side, money is not an issue for me. He was very demeaning and I felt his behavior towards a woman like me was mysogynistic. I would never recommend his practice to anyone. Dr Bauer is an excellent practitioner of the Dental Arts , my own brother is long time practitioner with degrees in France and at U Penn in the US that has practiced for over 30 years and he has always praised the work and advice of Dr Bauer one of the finest dentist one can encounter . He has a great office and very efficient professional assistants working on both the medical side and the front office side . Had a dental crisis that my previous dentist tried to cover up even after 4 post-op visits. I had been unable to sleep well or function for 3 weeks because of the pain from a procedure. Dr. Bauer was kind enough to see me as an emergency today and got rid of all the pain, treated me, and prescribed a future plan based on medical necessity. Cold winters are a great time to give back to others who help me by their reviews, I'm taking time to review Dr. Bauer so others may benefit. I have been seeing Dr. Bauer since just after he took over from the previous Dentist at the same location. Please bear with me because I'm covering many years of how great my experience has been with Dr. Bauer. As I've grown older, my teeth got worse and worse, requiring a substantial amount of work. I decided to try this new neighborhood Dentist, first, to have an assessment (sort of a meet & greet). After having a good vibe, I began with some smaller fixes to get a feeling of his demeanor and expertise. Every visit was very relaxing. Dr. Bauer actually takes precious time to explain every step of the way during any procedure to provide an understanding as to what he's doing. My childhood Dentist typically took time out to explain only his bill to my Mother. I've had two other dentists as I moved to other areas and they never really took time to say much. While performing any procedure, small or large, Dr Bauer constantly inquires if I am feeling discomfort, which in itself, is very comforting. It shows care for the patient as he himself can't feel one's pain at any given moment. Upon designating Dr. Bauer as my 'go to' Dentist, I went further into the already established long term plan to install 10 implants over the course of time. Does one experience some discomfort during an implant procedure, yes, but anything you do involving major work of this kind will put you a little bit out of the normal healthy state of mind. Initially, I was dreading the pain of my first implant appointment. To my amazement, the process went so smoothly. As I left the chair for the office, Dr Bauer handed me some extra gauze and a prescription for 800 mg of Ibuprofen instead of the typical Oxycodone I was used too getting from others for major work performed. I do not like feeling discomfort or pain, so I questioned the prescription, but he assured me it would be fine. I filled the prescription and surprisingly only took the dosage twice because I really didn't feel any pain. The cutting/drilling for 3 implants in a row was performed so well, there was no need to take any more Ibuprofen the next day. Each of the followups were the same. Other than the healing process, this was much ado about nothing. Dr Bauer made it a walk in the park! Now, in reference to wanting to write a review, to my dismay, I came across Yelp and became distressed after reading the typical negativity of some Yelp reviewers regarding Dr. Bauer, but it just seems to be par for the course with many Yelpsters for some reason. Therefore, I felt this place if any was where I'd share. When you have individuals like previous reviewers stating ".....every dentist I have seen in the last three years since has instantly noticed how bad that filling is." tells me this is a Dentist hopper, because they go from one to another to another and are never satisfied no matter who it is. In other statements, "Everyone seems to agree that Dr. Bauer is a salesman.' Maybe because he cares to inform you and urge you to do something so you can go to your grave with your original teeth and not have to get 10 implants like I had to. I grew up my first 5 years in Canada on Well water without the fluoride to provide added protection. No wonder I wound up with the implants. I never felt anything was an upsell, and I too, used to be in Sales. When Dr. Bauer explains the principles of 'cause and effect' in reference to one's teeth or oral hygiene, he addresses the pro-active measures one should exercise. After this, you have two choices, you either heed his warnings and professionalism or you look into your wallet and tell him I don't want to spend money to take care of my teeth. Plain and simple. Don't blame the Dentist for the latter! Then there's "Based on my experience at least, he is also a bad dentist." One knows a bad dentist in the 1st or 2nd visit. It was obvious this individual had seen Dr. Bauer many times before he just tired of him and needed to hop to the next one, and the next one and the next..... Sounds more like a 'bad client/patient'. Don't cut yourself short reading unjust negativity. A 'bad dentist' is a far cry from the likes of 'My outstanding Dentist - Dr. Bauer'! Maybe I'll bump into one of you during my next routine visit. Dr. Bauer recommended that I have 4 crowns done to replace fillings. He informed me that he recommended this treatment urgently otherwise I would be in danger of needed root canals. After seeking 3 different second opinions (because after I spoke with another dentist, I could not believe how different the recommendations were and so sought additional opinions), I was informed, unequivocally, that not only did I not need crowns but that I did not need any dental work (beyond cleaning). I am shocked and appalled at the over-treatment that Dr. Bauer recommended. I would have had significant absolutely unnecessary work done and spent thousands of dollars for no reason. read more

I went to Dr. Bauer because it was close to the client I was working for. Nice enough guy and office is clean. But the sales pitch...come on. I came in to get a cleaning covered by my insurance, and he tries to up-sell me on the fluoride treatment. I ask if it is covered by my insurance (he knows it not) but pretends to check through an online insurance query. He says it would cost $29 or something, I say I am not interested, and then he asks if it's a money issue...really? Just accept 'no' as an answer. So he says he will give to me for free this time. I never review anything simply because I believe the entire culture behind Yelp is super pretentious and full of whiney people, however upon seeing this office has such a mediocre score, I had to give my say. Let me just start off by saying this office is 100% LGBTQ-friendly. I am not kidding. I have been seeing Dr. Bauer for 2 years now. I began transitioning male-to-female a year after I began seeing him. He never once seemed confused or uncomfortable. In fact, he always asked me how my transition was going. Not with ignorance or even curiosity, but genuine sincerity and kindness. Like he actually cared to know of my progress and how much happier I am. I have never once felt awkward in that office. Dr. Bauer does not "upsell" any pitches to me, and I am never tackled with any bills. He makes his prices pretty clear, and if anything, he does nothing less than actually work with my insurance and code things so that I do not have a copay. This man genuinely seems to care for his patients and their oral health. You do not see this often, ESPECIALLY if you are LGBTQ. Dr. Bauer was my first dentist in the city, and he will be my children's first dentist as well. read more

Didn't know it was possible to leave a dentist appointment more relaxed than when I walked in? People would probably be hard pressed to find a dental office that puts you that at ease. I've been more used to being subjected to the equivalent of medieval torture over the years. The paperwork process was also really easy thanks to ZocDoc. He is less a dentist than a sales person. I recently moved and therefore needed a new dentist. I was very surprised when Bauer told me that I needed crowns practically in my entire jaw. I had been going to the dentist regularly and my previous dentist had never mentioned anything like that. So I went and got a second opinion from a different dentist, it turns out that crowns were absolutely unnecessary. My new dentist - which I can highly recommend - even said that this is not a question of opinion, suggesting crowns in my case is simply irresponsible. Salesman Bauer just wanted to take advantage of my excellent insurance. So my advice: This "dentist" does not have your interest or your teeth in mind. He wants to make money the easiest and sleaziest way. Stay away from him as far as you can! read more
