5 stars because the food reminds me of the local fare out of Seattle, Knoxville or Tulsa (big foodie cities)! The Brussels sprouts are crispy and tangy ordered as is, but they also have some add on options like Parmesan cheese that up the game. Their DT Pilly sandwich is Smokey BBQ meets artisan sandwich goodness. I'm a huge fan of Mac N Cheese done right so I can't wait to try that on my next visit! This is the kind of food that Modesto needs! The outside space could use a little TLC aesthetically and comfort wise, and the wine menu is illy put together, providing 2 full mouth feel creamy white wines and not a single crisp patio sipper (of you like sweeter, they have sangria, but those of us that don't know that's not an alternative). They really hyped up the burger and I was disappointed at how flavorless and bland it ended up being afterall... also the location is not ideal. Everyday there's homeless harassing people who eat outside and one particular day I was there and ordered ribs and potato salad (the potato salad was great, the ribs were just ok) there were religious fanatics yelling at people on the street about how they're going to hell til they repent. I know the restaurant can't do anything about that, so the 3 stars is more because the food was mediocre and the service was very very slow both times we went. It took 30min before they even gave us a menu even though there were only 3 other customers there... the staff just hangs out in back I guess and you have to kinda yell and wait til they eventually hear you or come out with someone else's food or to check on them. read more

Wanted to have a quick lunch before a movie on Valentines Day. This place did not disappoint. They were busy and the wait was about 15 min. But we did not mind because we were able to see the crew hustling the tables and in the kitchen. Love their version of fries (long slices of potatoes) as I believe they should taste more like potatoes than grease. Both my burger and my husbands wrap we're served quickly hot,tender and most importantly delicious. The owner Ty came out and introduced himself which was the perfect seal of approval for us. We visit my girlfriend's parents in Modesto a couple of times a year, and though there are some dynamite Mexican spots and a few little gems here and there , this is by far the best food we've had . The food was good, service was horrible. There were only 2 parties (6 and 4) when I walked in. I got a menu from a customer at another table. After being there 45 minutes, I had a glass of water and a table that hadn't been wiped down. I sat for nearly 20 minutes with zero contact/water. The people next to us asked waitress to wipe down their table. Eventually she came back with a wet bar towel and dropped it on their table!!! No one could believe it! They got mad and left, as you can imagine. I was very compassionate and asked the waitress if she had contacted her boss for help or if I should jump up to help her. I kinda felt badly for her. There were now 6 tables of people;only one table had food. She said she was thinking about calling a co-worker. I explained (how did she not know?!) that they are easy walking distance from Gallo and there were two shows tonight-her eyes got real big. These restaurants within stones throw of Gallo have a HUGE marketing and income opportunity. Your food is good, please staff your restaurant. It took 1:40 mins from sitting in restaurant to leaving it. We ordered 2 sandwiches, an appetizer, and a beer. 1/4 Update: My boyfriend and I went to Bauer's Downtown Gastropub today and once again I am blown away. I had the Vegan burger, the Game changer, that's made with the Impossible burger and it is insane. Bauer's handforms the burger and flavors it to perfection. I got the burger well done and it still was juicy with well balanced flavors. The thousand island sauce on it reminded me so much of In'N'Out's spread. I was in heaven. If you want a classic well done vegan burger, I highly suggest getting it. My boyfriend got the Sweet Carolina sandwich and loved it. I've been to this wonderful establishment twice since it's opened. The first time I got the sweet Carolina vegan sandwich. It was absolutely delicious, strong on the mustard, but I'm into it so it hit the spot for me. The second time I got a basic vegan Caesar salad, the dressing is made in house and by far is the best Caesar dressing I have had. I find myself craving the simplicity and deliciousness of that salad most days. I will definitely be visiting Bauer's Downtown very soon. read more
