We ate at Bauhaus for the first time tonight and everything was perfect. Every single bite of every dish was remarkable. I started out with their house made soda - a sparking strawberry drink that was extremely refreshing. We were there early and had the pleasure of sitting at the counter and talking to Tye - the owner/chef and Shauna the wait staff. Dishes are to share. Tye explained that he serves the dishes in particular order to deliver balance with intensely flavored dishes alternating with milder bites. We started with a simple plate of Marcona almonds, Castelvetrano olives and Manchego cheese. We then enjoyed the cabbage with peanut sauce dish - which may sound unusual but was absolutely delightful. We practically licked the plate - in fact asked for a spoon to capture all of the sauce. Next came whipped feta and ricotta cheese served with thinly sliced stone fruit some chili crisp and honey sprinkled with red walnuts and olive oil. This is served with bread slices. It's hard to describe how delicious and flavorful this dish was with such simple ingredients. We were going to order the steak and chimichurri but were talked into the lamb pops - and we are so glad to have tasted these marvelous lamb chops. They were cooked perfectly. In fact they were so good - we went ahead and ordered the steak too - which was extremely flavorful on its own but served with a fresh house made chimichurri. We also ordered the patatas bravas which were perfectly seasoned and cooked - almost crispy on the outside but creamy on the inside with just a perfect level of heat. We finished the meal with the cinnamon rolls - don't know how they cooked these to perfection so quickly but they were fantastic. Bottom line - how have we not been here before! This was my second visit to this culinary delight, and once again it reminded me why the experience here is so special. Tonight I went on the lighter side with the crab cake, which was exceptional! It was tender and elevated even further by a luxurious citrus béarnaise that brought the whole dish to life. I also tasted the feijoada, and it was outstanding: rich, comforting, and layered with the kind of depth that only comes from true craft. For shared bites, we enjoyed the pão and the bone marrow. The vibe! It feels like your neighborhood bar with someone making sure you're not getting stuck ordering the "same old thing". Great rotating menu of small plates and new wine, beer and kombucha to try. The staff is fun and all seem to love their job, but it's extra fun when owner/chef brings something straight out to your table! What a great spot. It's very eclectic. Very creative atmosphere. Star was very inviting and pleasant. Stephanie was our waitress and she was very pleasant and attentive. The food is all small plates and tasted farm to fresh. We ordered the salad and Brie bomb to start. Both were absolutely delicious. We then ordered bruschetta, beef Wellington, and sirloin. Very delicious. Very fresh, very full of flavor. My favorite was the Brie bomb and sirloin. Great little place. Somebody took an idea or dream and made it happen. I just love this place! Non-descript store front makes you wonder if there is even a place to dine here. But turn right down the side street and there is a parking lot in the back. Inside, it's a small and intimate place. You can fit 6 to 8 people around the bar, one larger table and then several two seater tables. They also have a covered patioout back. They serve tapas, and several of them are gluten-free. Beer and wine only, and sometimes a cider or two, but they have a good rotating selection. Everyone who works here is just plain cool. Great amount of attention, and are just interesting people to talk to They do all the preparing and cooking right in front of you if you are at the bar. Food is always really good to great! I chose to sit at the bar. Got to meet the owner named Ty. Ordered the garlic, thyme bone marrow which was excellent with the crusty bread and romaine salad underneath. The gambas de ajillo tasted just like if I got Argentinian frozen shrimp with salted butter, garlic, and shallots. Great with the crusty bread. I found getting the bone marrow more worth it. I've been to this place maybe 3 times now with my wife and every time the vibe is right and the food is good! We always go prior to their busy times so we always get tremendous service! If you didn't know this place existed you would walk right past it. The inside is small but has a cool vibe to it. What an amazing experience! The tapas were delicious. The beer and wine were fantastic. The vibe was everything. They accommodated my gluten allergy without hesitation. VEGAN SPECIFIC REVIEW: Bauhaus is VERY vegan friendly. I looked on Yelp to find a place that offered a vegan brunch in Modesto and Bauhaus popped up. Everything I ordered was absolutely outstanding. I ordered 4 items and split them with my partner and we were both satisfied with the brunch but not too stuffed. Not pictured is my seasonal spritz which had pomegranate seeds, strawberries, mango juice, blackberry juice, and something else that I'm forgetting. It was a 10/10). Our food came out at a decent pace, it felt like we had a 5-10 minute window between dishes which I personally enjoyed because you get to enjoy a freshly made/hot dish for every dish that you order. I only had to wait a few minutes to be seated at the bar/kitchen front area so I enjoyed watching the food be made! They even had purse hooks under the top of the bar!!!! Why do I love it here. The open kitchen. When other restaurants say this, they don't REALLY mean it. Here, it is in fact a place where you're watching and engaging with the chef. Listening to the chef idéate in real time was fun. The menu is curated in such a thoughtful way. The seasonal consideration keeps you on your toes from season to season. We had the clam steamers. Gambas (shrimp), beef Wellington, the baby artichokes and the broquetas (sardines) en vinagre. The staff makes excellent pairing recommendations throughout your meal and is attentive as much as possible. Reservations aren't required but if you want to sit at the bar (highly recommended), I'd make one and call and request the bar. read more

We're visiting from out of town and our friends recommended this place. Everything on the menu looked amazing so even though we didn't have reservations for 6 people, we came and waited around 30minutes for a table on a Saturday night (not bad at all!). The restaurant is small with a cozy vibe. The beers and kombucha were great and all the dishes we ordered were very well made and delicious. We ordered 2 to 3 plates of each dish and the owner lady even made sure we were not ordering too much. We're glad to find that Modesto has such a good restaurant now. Our server explained all the specials and Chef Ty will let you know the he smokes his own pastrami. Had the pastrami hash and I'm hooked. I've had Bauer's 66 1/2 bookmarked ever since I saw them on an episode of DDD. That location has since merged with Bauer's Downtown, but they aren't open on Sundays. Bauhaus, their sister restaurant, popped up on my search, and is open for brunch on Sundays! We toasted to our first trailer-camping trip with the Manmosa ($6) and sangria ($8): Light and refreshing, they'll sneak up on you! I actually got a pretty good buzz off of a single glass, although I am known to be a bit of a lightweight. The cinnamon puff pastry ($6) was the perfect sweet compliment to the savory entrees. So light and flakey! The fusion spin on the pork belly eggs Korean style ($15) worked, although the star of the dish, the pork belly, could have been cooked a bit longer. The pastrami in the pastrami hash and eggs ($15) was uber tender! Plus points for curing and smoking all their meats in house. Service was on point. Super cute patio area in back! Came in on a Saturday evening and didn't have to wait to be seated. The ambiance was very casual and welcoming. I came with a friend and we decided to share each plate. The wine selection was surprisingly diverse. I had a Syrah from Santa Barbara and a Douro from Portugal. Both were fantastic paired with the mainly red meat courses we ordered. The plating for some items like the batatas, steak, and beef wellington were a disservice to the food. The beef wellington was cooked to a perfect medium rare, but the plating made it look very underwhelming. It was actually our favorite dish for the night. The sauce was great with the steak and the pastry was buttery and flaky. Our lamb was supposed to be medium rare, but it came out almost well done. Surprisingly, it was still very tender and flavorful so I can't really complain about it. Portion sizes were very small, but I think the taste of the food made up for it. This might be one of the best meals I've had in Modesto. I would be careful choosing where to sit in the future though. I sat at the bar, and a lot of the smoke from the cooking was blowing right where my friend and I were sitting. Our eyes were watering by the end of the night and my clothes smelled like smoke. Maybe they need to upgrade the stove range or ventilation where the cooking is done. Outdoor seating would probably be the best, but then you'd lose out with chatting with the wonderful staff at the bar. I will definitely come back for wine and tapas in the future. read more
