This is one of the few local stores that carried exactly what I was looking for: Stalogy Monthly Planner B6. They're only physically open on Sundays but they answered my call on a Wednesday. Super gorgeous and organized inside. There's a lot of wandering space so you can take your time to explore and test products like pens. There's even a large table if you need to sit and relax. If you need help looking for something, don't be shy to ask. The workers are super friendly and knowledgeable. My purchase came with a free set of stickers! Super happy with this place. Lovely space where you can buy a lot of unique and vintage type stationary. The shop is small but still feels spacious and cozy. The staff members are very friendly. Much of their store is dedicated to Traveler's Company Journals and this is the only place I know of to get it customize in terms of new sleeves. They have a variety of journal inserts and other customize items as well. There section also has an exclusive collab with the Traveler's Notebook Company. The shop itself is very well curated and lovely. You really feel the aesthetic. I appreciate that they allow you to stamp your journal for free and have some stamp card. I was there during a promotion day (I guess) and got a free sticker sheet. While, I wasn't so focus on it there was a nice washi tape section that look pretty unique to what I see stocked in other stationary stores. Also a lot of quality pen cases. There is more but I wasn't so focused on that aspect. I enjoy their motto of having a "Love for Analogue" which is perfect for a stationary store. In the corner there is a Gachapon/Capsule machine, although I don't quite know what they were selling. The store is only open on Sunday and that is a shame. At the same time I understand that they are primarily a on-line store. We are lucky to have this type of store existing in any capacity and really is an ultra specialized store so it makes sense. read more

Tiny little place that is only open on Sundays. Parking right in front on the street is convenient but it's easy to miss this place. I have about 2 more locations left to drop into to finish up my #stationarystore crawl commitment! They had beautiful watercolor 'style' washi tape and postcards with original artwork from the people that work in the store. They have a nifty card catalogue for all of their washi tape so that you may see the design before purchasing. I love supporting local businesses, especially when they have super cute stuff for my planner. The store is small, but they have a good variety of products to choose from. They carry Midori Traveler's Notebooks, both standard and passport sizes in all 3 colors. They also have lots of accessories to choose from. The sales lady who was helping me was very helpful and knowledgeable. One other great thing is that you can personalize your planner in store with their variety of stamps and ink. They have different hours. The lady who works there said that the times they are closed to the public, they are busy fulfilling online orders. Apparently they package their orders really nice that they have a large online following. I may have to order online just so I can see the packaging for myself! read more

I have been wanting to go here for ages when I found out about this place somewhere on the internet. I've been stalking their IG and Wakao's account for the longest time! I drool over the variety of traveler's notebooks, leather goods, and other analogue items on their account. Every item they use are all Instagram worthy and beautiful to look at! This place is a dream for all those traveler notebook users. BK has a wide selection of stationary and writing tools that no other place can compare. They take careful selection of what they sell and I truly believe that because they are analogue lovers themselves, they wouldn't put an item on display if they didn't use it. I took advantage of their stamp station-I'm so glad I did and I had so much fun! Wakao and her assistant were so helpful and welcoming. I got to inquire about a specific pen Wakao uses and the assistant went ahead and grabbed it for me to look. I also got to see the Superior Labor engineer bags and how the sizes compare to each other. I've been eying it online for the longest time and now I'm certain that I want to get the extra small engineer bag in the future! I didn't go too crazy with my shopping here but I bought a modest amount of items: one washi tape, a Midori Clip band, and a Pentel Tradio pen. I think prices are pretty reasonable. When you go here, don't expect things to be cheap. It's not Daiso! But I believe that every item and purchase is worth it because as an avid journaler and traveler's notebook user myself, I appreciate quality over quantity and the art of using great materials for my analogue over cheap ones. The down side is that their hours are quite irregular and short. I came around 3 and they closed at 4 on Sunday. I would have loved to stay longer! I live in San Diego so this place is worth the drive but I seriously wish it were closer-I would go here every weekend! read more

SUPERIOR LABOR REVIEW: I was reading an article about Carlo Caraceni from Milan (legendary Italian tailor). They featured his EDC lambskin coin-wallet by Cedes Milano, and instantly, I was inspired. Two months later, I found out about Baum-Kuchen after researching for local stores that carry Kaweco (sport-fountain pens). Directions led me to Glassell Park on Verdugo road, and get this, the studio hours are from 2 - 4pm weekly with Thursday and Friday being the ONLY days of availability (seriously)?? The boutique / workshop is compact, fully stocked with utilitarian items mostly imported writing instruments, leather goods, canvas wallets, travel accessories, field-notes & hand-book journals. I came across this hickory leather coin-case shaped like a dove (impeccably made) hand stitched, tanned leather with brass fasteners (I had to have it). The company is originally from Okayama Japan, the brand is called, "The Superior Labor". A perfect addition to my collection and a nice little conversation piece. After parsing through the ever changing excel sheet of opening hours on their site, I attempted to visit the store, twice. 'Attempted' being the key word here: both times I was within the hours stated and both times, it was closed. So, as an online store, I give it 5 stars (I love their interviews, stories and stationary site in general) but I have to give a tough love 1-star for its real store. If you post your hours, be there until the last second of the last minute of the time or don't bother opening the store that day. I hope this feedback is taken to heart. Selection is small but it's everything I like. The artifacts are handpicked and carefully chosen. It shows even as they have nicely displayed it. I like The Superior Labor Engineer Mini that I bought. I got the color red to pair with my blue Filson Tote bag and my all-leather bag. They are acquiring a new color- blue gray, which is available in May or June. It's currently on pre-order on their website. The staff is friendly and helpful. The trip to this lovely studio made me very happy. First off, I had been wanting a Midori traveler's notebook for quite some time. I was thinking about buying one from Baum-Kuchen's online store but thankfully I found out that it was located in LA. I figured I should just make the trip there to save shipping costs. Plus, it would be cool to check this place out in person. I parked on the side of the streets and my sister and I made the mistake of walking into Baum-Kuchen's neighboring store. That was memorable. Anyway, I went into Baum-Kuchen and I was so memorized by all the craft goods. The studio was displaying all the items out and it was nice to browse around in there. You can tell the items there was top quality because the owner actually displayed her personal notebooks out. I got to actually hold and touch the quality of the leather items. That was a plus. The atmosphere was great, the decor and style was totally eye-candy. I bought my notebook with a few more items and the owner was so nice. She was so chill and easy going. I'm a Midori/ traveler's notebook lover, and they have everything imaginable from the basics to the cutest accessories. Then there's beautiful Japanese goods, quality leather products, stamps, wash I tape galore,.. It's hard not to buy everything. Inspiring space, lovely people. Came here for a travel planner group. It's one of the cutest and rustic stationary stores I've seen. It's not located in the most prime location, but don't let the surrounding stop you from stepping inside this hidden gem. Once you step into the store, it brings you back to old times of the past. The beauty of writing journals and just expressing one's own creativity are not often preached much nowadays due to technology and social media. This is the first Yelp review I've ever written but I thought it was entirely necessary for this lovely little shop. I found Baum-kuchen because I was looking online for a very specific item (the Midori 2021 Notebook Diary) and Baum-kuchen just happened to have the item. The price was exactly what I hoped, not inflated at all despite the product being near-impossible to find and I placed my order without a second thought. I just received my order today and the obvious love and care that went into my package was so much more than I expected. My journal came with a lovely Baum-kuchen bookmark, wrapped and personalized with my name. All of my items were wrapped perfectly in brown paper, and they even included an extra sticker sheet. To see small businesses going above and beyond during a challenging time for small businesses everywhere was so refreshing and delightful. I found this place after falling down a rabbit hole of all things analog & japanese. LOVE it. Wakako is super nice and helpful. No pressure to buy, but you get so excited you pretty much want one of everything they have. Cool place to hang out. I've been in a few times over the last year and never leave without buying something. They have classes, too. I have never been to any but I stalk them on instagram, etc. Such a gem. I recently attended an organization workshop which recommend a traveler's notebook for bullet journaling and personal notes and tracking. I accidentally bought a knockoff pleather Midori notebook on Amazon and was super disappointed, but after a friend strongly recommended Baum-kuchen I had to stop by and check out the real thing. Unfortunately I got there too late in the afternoon and the sign said "Close" on the door, but there were lights on inside and I had driven a bit so I thought to jiggle the door. Sure enough it opened and Wakako urged me to come in! She was so kind to let me into her amazing little studio/shop! It's a gorgeous well stocked space. She asked me what I was looking for and showed me the Traveler's Notebook area and left my to my devices! And while she was so kind and chill I felt bad lingering after the shop was closed so I got my quality Midori notebook, refills, and some cute Washi tape and left knowing I was definitely coming back and much earlier next time too because I want to look and touch (and buy) everything! read more
