At the time of writing this review, Bavarian Imports has an average Yelp rating of 3.6 stars from 69 reviews. I think that rating is about right based on my experience. This is an independent garage I want to like. I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt. Bavarian specializes in European makes. Contrary to what their website says, they work on other makes, like Toyota, too. The sign outside says they are "the BMW specialists." Despite servicing luxury cars, Bavarian is a fairly no-frills independent garage -- my kind of shop. I have a 2001.5 Volkswagen Passat 1.8T (B5.5) with over 300,000 miles (original owner, original engine). Before Bavarian, I took my car to four independent shops in Marietta. In recent years, I took my car to a shop in Carrboro, North Carolina. All of these shops specialize in VWs and Audis. So, I fully recognize I introduced a nearly 24-year-old, well-worn car with almost 303k miles to Bavarian. I spoke with Bavarian service advisor Bryce Jewell and he told me that old cars are their "bread and butter." That gave me hope, but after many years of experience with my car at other shops, I know my car isn't easy to work on. I took my car to Bavarian to diagnose my engine occasionally misfiring upon cold start. After keeping my car for five days, they weren't able to reproduce the problem. The original feedback from Bavarian's mechanic, Mark Thorsen, printed on my invoice was, "Technician states he cannot find anything wrong with vehicle." After hanging onto my car and test-driving it again, they noticed my engine wasn't running the way it should and smoke came out of my tailpipe (which my previous mechanic and I noticed too, but he wasn't concerned about). Bavarian's diagnosis, which cost $150, was old valve guide seals causing oil to leak into my cylinders. That makes sense. However, where I had pause was Bavarian's recommendation, which was to replace my "engine core." In other words, replace my entire engine for almost $6,000. Bavarian didn't think it was worth it to "just" replace the valve guide seals on my original engine due to its age and wear. I get that. Hence their engine replacement recommendation. It's my understanding that since you can't get a VW/Audi 1.8T engine new and Bavarian couldn't source it from one of their suppliers, Bavarian suggested either I supply the engine myself or they could find one. They found one on eBay and quoted me $2,300 for it. They quoted 18.5 hours of labor at $150/hour, which equals $2,775. After a $500 "buffer" for extras - for example, old parts that break and need replacing during the engine rebuild, $80 for shop supplies, and $249.20 in taxes (8.9%), I was looking at $5,904.20. By far, this was the biggest estimate I've received for repair work on my Passat - and I've had some big bills. Also, the replacement engine understandably wasn't covered under warranty by Bavarian. I called my old mechanic in North Carolina and told him what Bavarian told me. He's a VW specialist and is very familiar with my car (he's had the same engine himself). In short, he disagreed that my engine should be replaced. One thing that's different about Bavarian compared to the other independent garages I've taken my car to is that Bavarian is a relatively bigger operation. They have more lifts - I believe six, but don't quote me on that - and actually have staff in service advisor roles like Bryce. I'm used to speaking with the shop owners/mechanics directly. That said, I appreciate service advisors for their people skills. Bryce was terrific from a customer service perspective. He said all the right things, was pleasant to talk to, generous with his time, and honest. He was real with me in saying that $6k repair cost could instead go towards a new or used car. I appreciated that, but I didn't want to give up on my Passat yet. What I most appreciated about Bryce was he recommended an independent garage in the area that specializes in VWs and Audis: Karma in Scottdale. I got a second opinion from them. Karma made a completely different diagnosis and successful repair, related to my then-failed secondary air injection pump, for a cost of about $2,500. Contrary to Bavarian, the general manager at Karma didn't think my engine needed to be replaced, agreeing with my old mechanic in North Carolina. Also consistent with my NC mechanic's opinion, the Karma GM wasn't concerned about the poofs of smoke that came out of my tailpipe upon certain cold starts. He said that happened to new VWs on the lots at the VW dealerships he used to work at. Since taking my car to Karma about two months ago, it's been running great. My Passat lives on. My wife made a good analogy: Taking my car to Bavarian was like going to see my PCP. Taking my car to Karma was like my PCP referring me to a specialist for specialized care. Ultimately, I do think Bavarian was honest and tried to do the right thing within their abilities. In this case, I needed specialized expertise. read more

About 11 months ago, I was disappointed with a brake service--not because of the brakes, but because of how nonchalant the front desk guy was. I'm glad to hear he's no longer with the company. Since then, I tried other places and got terrible repairs, including a botched oil change at Express Oil on Howell Mill. I ended up coming back here, and I'm so happy I did! So, went here some years ago to have my car repaired, and they did a good job for a really low price for my particular car. So I was prompted to go back. When I returned, the African American gentleman who had given me such good service before was no longer there. Now there was a new person at the front desk. A caucasian male with glasses (I'm just trying to describe them because I don't remember his name). Nevertheless, I had an oil change, and everything was fine. But then I brought it back to have "the right and left Val's replaced" on my car. My car was in their shop for almost two weeks and I paid $2200 for the repair. When I got my car back, the check engine light was still on! The check engine light was the reason for the problem we had fixed supposedly. The male at the front desk (with the glasses!) told me that the check engine light should go off after I drive it a certain miles. And he also, said that I should bring back if it doesn't (because it was supposed to). Long story, it never went off! I didn't take it back immediately because I had been traveling and wasn't driving the car for a long time. However, I felt something off with them, so I took my car to get diagnosed by Solo AutoSports. They gave me a full diagnostic. And guess what, the right and left Vals needed to be replaced! So, I took it back to Bavarian (who seemed agitated when I was making my appointment for this again). I brought my car in, and sure enough the male with the glasses was at the front desk. When they were finished "examining", he handed me a paper with an estimate. He didn't explain that it wasn't the vals or what was wrong, he just handed me an estimate as rudely as he's always been. So I approached and was trying to tell him that the diagnostic that I had received says that the vals were still not fixed and that the check engine light had never went off. Just as I'm saying this, he so rudely cut me off and begin to talk over my head. He was literally trying to patronize me. He was very arrogant and literally belittled me in front of the other people in the waiting room. His tone was "No, it's not that! You have (blah, blah, blah)!" Using all mechanical terms that he knew I wouldn't understand on purpose, instead of taking the time to explain as if he cared. He was purposely being condescending. I was humiliated to say the least. However, I kept my composure. And said okay. Then he begin to gaslight me by saying in an aggressive and arrogant tone, "how attached to this car are you? Because it's going to need about $10,000 worth of work" (assuming I didn't have it and wanting me to believe he was trying to offer advice). I felt as though he was looking down on me, especially because I am a young woman. I never forgot how he made me feel and how I felt leaving the shop that day. Safe to say, I will never go back. And I can also say that for me, this shop has been going down in the service since he got there. Goes to show that some places will take advantage and even look down on women without male's person. I've trusted no one else with my cars the last 4 years. Jabari and his bodywork crew have worked on the inside and outside of my Range Rover, BMW 530i, and my Nissan Titan. Recently, the truck cut off at chick fil a on a Saturday morning and would not turn back over. Without even asking the Bavarian staff, I had it towed to their shop (after hours of failed jump attempts and a self diagnosis of a bad starter...) Jabari just so happen to be there with another mechanic working on his own car on his day off. Without hesitation, he took my keys and confirmed my diagnosis. He even gave me a ride so I could grab the part from advanced auto right down the street! I went to FLIP burger to have lunch and by the time I paid for my check he was done. Well worth the money and I will speak nothing but praise for this crew. I'll also say this... mind your manners. On occasion I've witnessed people come in with bad attitudes from other situations (like traffic) and flip out on this staff undeservingly. When the staff gives them an unfavorable answer they flip out (again) and mumble "I'm gonna give you all a terrible review!" To those kinda people... i say "do better." read more

After several really bed experiences with both Nally BMW & United BMW I decided to take my 2003 Z4 to Bavarian. Right off the bat I was pleased with the service I received setting up my appointment and checking in from Derrick. He also called to explain my service options before proceeding which was really great. In the end Bavarian saved my $150 on my first service that the dealer had quoted at $750. On a later service the installed a $700 part that did not fix the problem as they predicted and when I didn't want to spend another $700 on top of that to replace the other 1/2 of the sensor they removed the the they had installed and didn't charge me anything. The front desk guy, Derrick, seems cool but I feel like The other guy, Michael, was trying to rip me off. I had my tires shipped from Tire Rack to have put on but when I got there he told me he could not do the alignment because my control arms needed to be replaced. That seemed odd to me since I just had my car checked out at my regular maintenance shop. I then took my car to the BMW dealership ask them to do the alignment and they said there was no problem with the control arms and it was pretty obvious. When I tried calling them about this, they said they would call me back but of course they didn't. Clearly Bavarian wanted to charge $1000 for nothing. Won't be back. read more

I recently contacted Bavarian Imports to ask if they could conduct some minor repair work on my 1985 BMW e28. The individual who answered the phone was polite, but did stop me mid sentence to indicate that he was not sure if the owners would be willing to work on an older car -- and that he would ask them and get back with me. Well, I never did receive a call back -- and it did rub me the wrong way that they would have to think about whether they would want my business or not, especially since they are BMW specialists. And I didn't even get an opportunity to explain what kind of work my car needed. In the past, I have used this shop on a number of occasions to work on my BMW 330i. The work was always satisfactory -- except for one time, when I dropped it off for service and found that the switch to my right driver's side window was not working properly after I picked the car up. In all fairness, I did not address the particular issue with the broken window switch after the fact -- but feel like I shouldn't have had to do so or deal with the inconvenience involved. Overall, my experience has been good, but I ended up taking my 1985 to another local shop, who also specializes in BMWs and was glad to work on my car -- so I will not be going back to Bavarian Imports again. read more

The guys at Bavarian are super awesome. I was referred to bring my BMW here from a CA at BMW. We came here to check our CEL and they found out what was causing the code. They let us look under the truck...pointed out the issue...and gave us a quote to fix. Luckily for us, we just got the car, so the dealership took the info, and fixed the problem for us. Today, we are getting brakes fixed. They use OEM parts, so that makes a difference. The front office staff and the mechanics are extremely friendly and knowledgeable. The owner Mike is awesome! He is so nice, friendly, and warm. He makes you feel like family. All in all, I will drive an hour (in traffic) to bring my car here. read more

Following an expensive repair to have the air conditioning fixed in my 2001 E430, the car was returned to me along with several dashboard warning lights that didn't previously exist. I was assured it was an easy fix, so I dropped my car back off. Four weeks and over $1,000 in car rental expenses later, they still hadn't fixed it and still couldn't say what was wrong. Not knowing what else to do, I asked for my car back. In fairness, they did comp me $300 on an unrelated repair but I still got left on the hook for the other $700. I took my car straight to a dealership where they fixed the issue within two days. They also ran a diagnostic test and, not surprisingly, discovered several issues with previous repairs I had done with Bavarian Imports. The biggest positive about this place is the manager, Derrick. He's well-intentioned and truly does his best but he isn't the guy working on your car. If you're looking for an oil change or some other basic service, they're fine - but you're rolling the dice if you need a bigger repair. read more

Since my initial encounter, seeking body work after an accident, Jabari has been a Godsend and Corey on the repair side is extremely helpful, polite, and knowledgeable. They communicate every step of the way and do good quality work. Most importantly, I always feel comfortable dealing with Bavarian. They have kept my cars running smoothly over the years and don't kill me with the pricing. I drive a Porsche Cayenne and have never had any serious issues-- just routine maintenance. It was driving fine this weekend, but it started acting up on Monday, Feb 22nd. I was driving home after work when the PSM light started flickering on and off. I started to feel like I didn't have control over the vehicle and thought I had a flat tire on the right rear side. I got home and checked it out, but the tires were fine. I then got my boyfriend, Steven, to drive it. It got significantly worse. The PSM light stayed on (no more flickering) and a message came up that read "PSM Failure". Even though we were steering straight, the car felt like it was going all over the road--like it was driving us. We probably looked drunk to anyone else on the road. Steven confirmed something was definitely wrong since he had no control and told me to take it to the shop in the morning and have a mechanic inspect it. I looked up different repair shops that were close by and chose Bavarian Imports because it had excellent ratings and was in between my home and office. I could not be happier with this decision. I got there a little before they opened, and the owner, Mike, was there. He told me he specialized in Mercedes and BMW and it might be an issue for the Porsche dealership. He said he would definitely check it out and let me know what I needed to do. I respected him right then and there because it showed integrity. I called a few hours later to check in, and I was told that my right rear trailing arm was split in half, which explains the loss of control. They confirmed it wasn't safe to drive on, and they would be able to fix it. They were able to get the parts (upper and lower right rear arms) and fix the car within 24 hours. I picked up my car yesterday, Wednesday, Feb 24th. Mike was telling me that in his 40+ years of working on cars, he has never seen anything like that. He told me he thought my car was in a wreck previously and was not reported. Basically the arm was damaged before I ever purchased the car. I asked him if anything else looked suspicious, and he said no. I enjoyed speaking with Mike, and I was able to get some insight. It wasn't the cheapest repair- $756, but it was fair. I looked up the prices of the parts online, and Bavarian was very competitive. I got my car within 24 hours, and it drives better than ever. I received a text from Mike this morning asking if I was happy with the Porsche...talk about great customer service.This is also the only place I have ever gone where they don't try to list other potential issues with the car and tack on higher price tags. I took my VW Tiguan to Bavarian Imports for a second opinion after the service dept. at my VW dealership told me I would have to replace my turbocharger in order to pass an emissions test and that the job would be a little over $3k. Since my car was still running fine, it seemed a little absurd to hear that. I took my car to Mike and, unlike at the VW dealer, I received excellent service and actually had a chance to speak to the mechanics who worked on my car. They explained to me that, yes, the turbo was dying but they offered to do the repair for $600 less than the dealer. Mike and his team did the work, but I kept receiving new error codes after getting the car back. The first time was an airflow monitor and once that was fixed it became clear the airflow monitor issue was just a symptom of a faulty fuel injector. Mike and his team applied the money I spent to fix the air flow monitor towards the fuel injectors and now my car is running like a charm, no more errors. Bottom line is this: Mike and all of the guys at Bavarian Imports were very straight up and honest with me, they took time to explain the issues, and they did the work well for less than what the dealer would have charged. Mike is someone with a real passion for cars, particularly German brands (as the name implies). He loves what he does and takes pride in his work. Exactly the kind of person I want working on my car. I will definitely not be taking my car back to the service team at the VW dealership again, Bavarian Imports will be handling all of my service appointments from now on. read more

I just took my Audi A4 over to Bavarian Imports for a major scheduled maintenance service. These guys are seriously professional and did great work in an extremely timely fashion (my car was ready 2 hours before the allotted time). In the past I had gotten service at Jim Ellis and Gwinnett Audi. Not only did Bavarian Imports save me money over the dealership service there was no haughty attitude or the hassle of having to wait forever. The icing on the cake is that I live in Berkeley Park and was able to walk to and from the shop from my home. However, even if you live on the other side of town, get your work done here, you will not be disappointed. My car will never be worked on by anyone else again, period. I wish I had written a review every time these guys and gals have impressed me. I was referred here by a friend who was very happy with the work on his VW. I've had several items from radiator work to a valve cover gasket. On the radiator work, they saved me $500.00! I was imagining (and had even said so) that I was going to need a whole new radiator and was prepared to pay for one. I was pleasantly surprised when Corey told me it was only part of the radiator needed to be replaced, and the repair was much less than I thought I would pay. Most recently, I had a battery replaced at another bodyshop that accidentally damaged one of the battery terminals resulting in the airbag and safety belt warning to light up the dashboard. I took it straight to Corey and he quickly diagnosed the problem. $355 in repairs later, my car was back to where it was before I had the battery replaced elsewhere. Amazingly, with Corey's help in speaking with the other shop and explaining what had happened, the other shop agreed they had caused the problem. And then talk about going above and beyond, he didn't ask me to pay for the work and take a receipt to the other shop to get reimbursed; he said he would take care of getting reimbursed himself and gave me back my car in perfect condition, without me being out of pocket at all. My husband and I were loyal customers of Bavarian for almost 6 years (while we lived in the area). Derrick and his brother were wonderful--honest, trustworthy and accommodating. Now that Derrick is no longer there, we are looking closer to where we now live (we made the drive before almost entirely because of our trust in Derrick). On my last visit, I paid two separate diagnostic fees: one to check my head and taillights and one to check my fluids (for a total of $200+ in diag fees). I don't think that would have happened with Derrick (one fee, ok...but two?). Derrick is the BEST!!! After driving miles to get my car serviced and buy part at Global Imports; just to be treated rude & forced to get over priced parts & labor. I then googled Bavarian Imports and that has been my only choice for my 2006 530i since. As a woman, shops tend to offer me parts that are not needed and over charge me for the service. Several times I have took my car to Bavarian and they check my car with NO diagnostic fee and solved the very minor problem quickly. I recommend this place only to service your BMW.... I took my A4 here after the check engine light came on. My coolant gauge showed that my car took an abnormally long time to reach normal operating temperature, so I wanted to take it in to get checked out. They told me that my coolant thermometer was broken and that it would be approximately $800 to get replaced. I thought that was a crazy high estimate, but it was in line with what other shops quoted me for the job. But I figured why run before you walk, so I checked my car's coolant level before I signed off on a near four figure repair bill. The coolant level was below the minimum mark, so I added coolant and gave it a few days to see if that fixed it. Boom, problem solved for $12 at NAPA. The receptionist and staff were very nice, and they gave me their answer and quote very quickly. However, I can't overlook that they didn't check my coolant levels when my car was giving off a coolant-related error code. If they would have topped off my coolant and told me to come back in a few days, I'd be a customer for life. Instead, they recommended a totally unnecessary repair. I'm out $105 for the "assessment fee." Next time, I'll just run by Autozone, have them pull the codes, then look for a mechanic that I can trust to check the minor things before recommending a day-long repair job. read more

I took my 2001 VW Eurovan with a CEL and a skipping engine. They charged me $75 to diagnose the need for a new engine and then proceeded to tell me they didn't want to work on it. Then I found out that they broke a $120 piece.... When I got in the car the low coolant light came on. I thought that maybe they lost some coolant when diagnosing the engine. I pulled over at the first gas station on Howell Mill and immediately saw 2 things. Steam and an empty water reservoir. I filled it up and drove home. When I got home I found that they had broken a nipple off a T in the coolant system. Instead of A. fixing it properly, B. telling me they did it, or C. Fixing it like a redneck; they shoved some RIVETS! in the pipe end and broken T. I was EXTREMELY pissed when I got home and found out that the T was part of a hose assembly that cost $120. LYING CHEATING AND THIEVING. ps- I went and bought a new hose and new spark plugs and wires. Plugs and wires fixed the CEL AND the skip (no new engine needed). If you can't diagnose a car properly, if you charge someone $75 for a mis diag, if you break something and don't fix it, you have NO BUSINESS being IN business. read more

Buyer beware. I took my car here for an oil leak. Long story short, they quoted me over $5000 for a repair that only costed around $900 in the end. Nothing they said made sense. They took me for a dumb chick who knew nothing about my car. Wrong. I was so glad to have gotten a second opinion. read more
