Biryani? More like Mango Masala Mystery. Walked into Indian Bawarchi in Apex expecting biryani... walked out questioning my life choices. Ordered the boneless chicken biryani--was it Hyderabadi? North Indian? Nope. It was something entirely new: Sour Surprise Biryani, featuring what felt like a handful of amchur (dried mango powder) and a complete lack of actual biryani flavor. I'm convinced someone in the kitchen confused the spice rack with the candy shelf. Tandoori appetizer? Sizzling, yes. Memorable? Meh. Garlic naan was decent--if only naan could carry the whole meal on its doughy shoulders. Service: 3/5 Two waiters, two tables, one manager--sounds promising, right? Not really. We had to remind them we ordered biryani (you know, the main dish). "Oh, you ordered biryani?" Yes, my guy. That's kind of the whole point. Also had to clear our own table like it was a self-service picnic. Ambience: 4/5 Nice space, clean, decent vibe. Sadly, ambience doesn't come with a side of flavor. Some places do seem as authentic because the food is either incredibly Americanized or the spice levels are catered to American palate. This place does not skimp. The food is delicious and they definitely can make it as spicy as you want it. We came at an off time (2-3pm), but the staff was still attentive and the food came out quick. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who lives here or is just passing by and looking for some great Indian cuisine. read more

Great timings. Great quality/value for the money. Great location - close to us. Decent Indian food. I am mostly plant based so I had the Chana and the bhindi - not the best ever but very solid. The strange part was when I went to pick up my order. It's under my name or my husband's, I tell her. Ankit or Debra. She asks me for the credit card that I used to order. I told her I and my husband have different cards and he places the order. I told her I had the order receipt - I get my phone and show her. She is still not allowing me to take the order - I said if you don't believe me call the number on the order - it's mine. I am still super confused about this line of questioning as I get asked less questions when picking up prescriptions for family members at the pharmacy. My last name is Indian so perhaps she didn't believe that my husband was Indian? My poor son was sitting in the car through all of this. They have a poor system for pick up orders. I ordered via their online website @ 1pm. When I went to pick up @ 1:30pm for a promise time for 1:45pm they did not even have the ticket printed with my order. I was told I'd have to wait another 30 mins for my order. At this point I was ready to just cancel my order and go home at this point. Their solution was to call in and order and not use the online ordering. Why even have that as an option if it's unreliable. Not happy at all. I will say the food is good. I ordered my usual saag paneer, chicken tikki Marsala, and samosa. We ordered the following with feedback inclusive: - Gobi Manchurian: probably the worst I've had. Several cauliflower chunks were uncooked. Disappointed. - bawarchi margarita and Bawarchi mojito: really yummy drinks - butter chicken: lacked flavor. Chicken was hard. Disappointing. - shahi paneer: lacked flavor. Flavorful and chicken was soft. - garlic naan and chapati: so dry. Almost felt like they reheated some previously made bread. Disappointed. service was very slow. There were barely 2 tables taken but it still took a while to get our food. I also had to walk to the bar to pay for my food and ask for to go boxes. And lastly, it's pricy. I prefer to order saucy dishes, let them marinade overnight in the fridge, and then enjoy them at least a day or so later. Like Italian food, tastes better after it sits. Go-to dishes include the butter chicken, lamb korma, samosas, sagg, and biryani rices (which I eat the day of ordering). They use to offer Indo-Chinese fusion pasta/rice dishes, but they aren't available when I seem to order... I like them though, sporadically. Ambiance is big, lots of TVs at the bar. Service is typically slow and that's why I only order to-go now. This place was great when it opened but I think the pandemic smacked it around too hard. read more

We tried Bawarchi Grill and Spirits last night for the first and last time. We had two birthdays in the family and both wanted Indian cuisine. We walked into the restaurant and were initially impressed with the beautiful table cloths and the wonderful scents. It went downhill from there. Despite the emptiness of the dining room, we were seated near the front door where people were hanging out and waiting for take out orders as they leaned over our table. The wait staff didn't seem to be in any hurry to help anyone. We gave our order to one of the various waiters who was wandering around. There was no welcome, no explanation of the menu, no help when we had questions about the different dishes. We waited for our food for almost an hour without anyone stopping by the table to refill drinks or see if they could bring us a basket of bread. The staff seemed more interested in getting the to go orders out the door than helping the guests who actually took the time to come to their establishment. The food finally arrived and the dishes had sauce spilling out all over the table cloth. It was a sloppy mess. I had to wait an extra 10 minutes for my Tandori Chicken which was a sizzling pan with burned to a crisp vegetables and the saddest pieces of 'chicken' that I have ever seen. It might have been a pidgin. I guess the half of the chicken that I ordered consisted of two miniature legs and two flat thighs. I can promise you that the entire meat from those pathetic bones would not have yielded a 1/4 cup of cooked meat. Apparently the breast of this chicken went to someone else. The other members of our party enjoyed the sauces in their dishes but we all had to share a tiny bowl of rice and we paid extra to get four small pieces of naan bread. Our drinks were never refilled and no one ever stopped back by to see if we needed anything. We will not return to this establishment. This was an expensive experience in mediocre food. read more

Since "Spirits" is in the title, I'll start with the Chardonnay. It wasn't Chardonnay! Our sweet, kind server insisted the red wine he brought me was what I ordered. "Chardonnay is white," I said. His response: "But I pressed Chardonnay on the computer, and this is what I got." I think it might have been Pinot Noir, but who knows? Our server certainly didn't. I kept it and it was fine, but it wasn't Chardonnay. Everything else was terrific! We started with "Chilly Mushrooms," which were crispy, tasty, covered with a spicy sauce and loaded with sweet peppers and tomatoes. We really liked the Chicken Vindaloo and Chicken Curry, too. Both were well-spiced, though not quite as spicy as we were expecting. The accompanying basmati rice was really good, too. Despite the Chardonnay Incident, our server was great. He was eager to help, kept our water glasses full, and checked on us regularly. His pride in the restaurant was obvious. We've been twice now and I think I can pass judgement fairly. The first time we went with a large group and I didn't pay too much attention to the short comings but the last time we went it was just with my immediate family and there was a lot left to be desired. We were seated promptly our second time; however, service overall was slow. (Our first visit here took forever to be seated-even though the dining room was pretty empty.) We ordered two mango lassis, cauliflower manchurian with gravy, hakka noodles, peshwari naan and kadhai paneer. It started out poorly once we got our lassis and they were blatantly two different sizes. It came in two different glasses and one was definitely smaller than the other. We let it slide since my daughter wanted hers immediately. Then when we ordered the gobi manchurian, we were told that they didn't have it and would be able to do the vegetable version. We went with it. When the food arrived the manchurian was severely lacking. The dumplings were super small and very greasy. They tasted just like plain dough balls and couldn't really taste any vegetables in it. The hakka noodles were good but nothing extraordinary. The paneer was the only thing that I thought was pretty good but my husband felt like it was tomato heavy. The peshwari naan didn't have nearly enough stuffing and was lacking the peshwari taste. It was heavy on coconut and nothing else which make the texture feel off. All of this came with a pretty hefty price tag as well. For the quality of food and the price I definitely won't be back. I frequent Bawarchi regularly and I got a chicken dum biryani carry out a few days ago. At home I was surprised that in the big box there were only 2 pieces of chicken - a thigh and a small drumstick. I thought surely it's a mistake and called the restaurant where they said that it was normal and that is what the give. Had to go to the Home Depot in Apex and the Belgian Cafe has apparently gone out of business so my wife and I were searching for some lunch earlier today (Sunday). Had tried the Morrisville Bawarchi and liked it alright so figured the Apex one might be a safe bet. Arrived and it was fairly crowded because of the Cricket World Cup final. It definitely was a sports bar in a previous life because there were over a dozen large TVs showing the cricket match. It definitely made conversation a bit hard but made for a pretty great atmosphere as both patrons and staff seemed really into it. Service was totally fine as were the complimentary papadam and chutneys (mint and tamarind). We ordered the gobi Manchurian (fried cauliflower in a spicy sauce), the lamb dum biryani and the bhagara bhaigan (baby eggplant and roasted peanut curry). All three were fantastic -- the gobi was adeptly fried and spiced really well, the baby eggplant was silky and smoky and tied in well with the earthy curry and the biryani was bursting with flavor. Prices were pretty much on par with the dozens of Indian restaurants in that part of Wake County (though do take notice that Bawarchi is the only one near downtown Apex) and the whole experience was great. While the food is okay the service is really lacking due to I assume staff shortages and the employees they have not wanting to work. I waited for 10 minutes when someone finally showed up I told them I need to pay for my food and they ignored me seated customers who came after me and then left. Not showing back up. After I went to tell the bartender I was leaving they could keep the food he finally said he'd take my card and the food was magically ready. Definitely go somewhere else if you can. Went for lunch on Tuesday afternoon. They are not the typical buffet lunch places but have the ala Carte menu which I liked. Ordered the Andhra curry chicken (med spicy). Spice level was perfect for that level unless you are not from Native andhra or from India in which case mild is a good place to start at. The lunch specials come with good portion of naan and rice with dal and the main entree dish of your choice. It ends with one gulab jamun for dessert. A good value for lunch. And for those people who want their food fast, our order came in about 10 min which is not bad at all...would definitely recommend read more

The sauces were typical with no twist or surprises. The Butter Chicken was very good with the option of heat level one to ten. We selected one which only had the slightest of spiciness which is what we anticipated. The sauce was flavorful and leaned a little more tomato than most. Good amount of rice provided. I couldn't understand a word the waiter was saying and I needed to know what was in some of the dishes. Long, heavy tablecloths that I almost ripped off the table a couple of times because they were on my legs. Naan was oily and cold. Soup was flavorless other than too much salt. My main dish was so thick and creamy and not a hint of spice. The yellow lentil dish had a bad flavor and was too runny. The rice was ok (YAY!) and the dessert ball was cold and tasted like old oil. This review is long overdue. About two months ago my wife and I stopped by one weekend. We ordered and the food we orderer took a long time and the drinks took even longer. The food we ordered was not tasty at all. I forgot to review our disappointing experience. We lived close to Nazari in Cary before we moved to Apex. Nazari is one of THE best Indian restaurants we have frequented. When we moved to Apex and saw an Indian restaurant we assumed it would be comparable or as enjoyable dining experience to Nazari. If we even had a slightly decent tasting food, we might have been willing to give it a second try. But the food was so disappointing we both decided not to visit again. Had to come try this restaurant since today is their grand opening plus it happens to be my husband's birthday and this restaurant is just a few minutes from home. Bonus points for location. Coming to Food, everything was super yummy. They have 1-10 spice level to choose from. We went between 4&5 and it was perfect. We ordered Gobhi Manchurian for starters and it was pretty good. Paneer Tikka masala with garlic naan was yum as well! Biryani was good but could have more vegetables. It comes with a small bowl of Salan (saucy curry) and Raita. And though it's not on the menu you can order cocktails and I loved my Pina Colada. Overall loved everything and I will come back to try their Tandoor items. Couldn't try any Tandoor or Indo Chinese items since they didn't have them today. read more
