I had a great experience with Lee on our project. We live upstairs in a 2-unit condo and wanted to replace the carpets in the bedrooms with hardwoods. Needless to say, the downstairs neighbors would have been pretty upset if we would have done top-down nailing of the boards directly into the subfloor, like the hardwoods in the rest of the condo. Lee explained the theory behind laying down acoustic underlayment, helped us tweak the specific layers we used to optimize for different types of noises (footfall noise vs. voices coming through from downstairs, etc.). Avoid at all costs. I read some of the other negative reviews here before I contacted Bay Area Noise Control, and I'd thought I'd still give it a try. That was a huge mistake. I got a 1 hour noise control consultation with Lee Brenner, the owner of the business, at $195. In the initial call, I made it pretty clear early on what exactly what I needed help with (sound insulation for windows, especially with whether they are sealed correctly). Lee promised that he would able to help and has deep expertise in this area. His consult would provide specifics to the problem we were facing, and that he also has a crew who can help with the actual work. This summarizes my experience with this consult: - Lee was completely unprepared for the consultation. Even though he asked for my address ahead of time so he could review the house online, he didn't know at the beginning of the call which house the consultation is for, and what case we're even talking about. We spent about the first 10 minutes just to have him pull up the file, and going over the problems that we just discussed the week earlier. - Lee did not share any information in the consultation that I didn't already get from just talking to windows contractors (for free) or that you could easily find online. The consultation was also entirely unstructured, with Lee just jumping from one topic to the next. There were no clear next steps or recommendations at the end of the call, and definitely no advice that was tailored to the specific situation at hand. - Towards the end of the call, I asked Lee if he could give a more specific look at the windows I already had, and whether they had any installation problems. He asked that I go take photos of them and send it to them so he could take a look and give advice. He happily made this offer and said it would only take him 15 minutes. After I took the time to take the photos, organize them, and send them to Lee - Lee outrageously asked that he needs to charge another $295 in order to look at them and give any advice. - Lee said that he has a crew that does this sound proofing work - but in practice don't expect that they can actually help. I asked if Lee if they could help with sealing of the windows, but Lee said they are too busy for jobs that small. It seems like unless you're willing to sign up for a huge project upfront, Lee pretty much won't come out and actually take a look at what needs to be done, even though every other contractor I have worked with did that for free. - Lee is also just repeatedly rude. He acted like he is going out of his way to do a huge favor for me (for a service I am paying for). He'll remind you of all he expertise he has and how busy he is. It never feels like he actually wants to really help you. - When I told Lee I was disappointed by the service and that I was going to share this through reviews, Lee threatened to sue. He reminded me that he has all my personal information and "I knows where you live", and that he will follow through with a personal law suit "no matter the cost". What kind of reaction is that to a customer who is disappointed? I genuinely didn't want to write this review, or have this conflict with Lee, or hurt his business. But the experience has been so awful that I feel compelled to share it. Now that the pandemic has us home all the time, I can say with 100% confidence that the time and money we spent on hiring Lee and Bay Area Noise Control was 100% worth it. It has been almost a year since Lee and his crew, led by John, soundproofed the ceiling of our master bedroom. When my husband and I first spoke with Lee, we had been living in our middle unit home for a little under a year. Our master bedroom lies beneath the living room of our friend's unit, home to these adorable cat brothers that would pound up a storm when they played and chased one another. We were fortunate that our friends were willing to work with us to minimize the noise at night, from responding to messages asking them to lower the volume to keeping the cats in their guest bedroom overnight. But, these daily asks can prove bothersome with time, and we started brainstorming a more permanent solution for soundproofing. My husband dug around the internet for both DIY and professional solutions, and Lee proved to be one of the best options for a residential project. We hired him for a consultation in Feb 2019, and for a few hundred dollars, he assessed our situation and proposed a plan. Then, we took a few months to deliberate before we were ready to bite the bullet, as the project was not chump change. Our bedroom is quite large by SF standards, on top of being oddly shaped, so extra time & materials were factored into the overall cost. And we contemplated cheaper options, such as floor soundproofing our friend's unit, maximizing our bedroom noise-canceling techniques (earplugs, white noise machine), etc. But, after a few months, we reached out to Lee in late July 2019 with our commitment to pursue the ceiling project and hire him as our soundproofing contractor. Alongside his technical and city planning expertise, Lee is great with communication. With our project, we split our payments based on completion benchmarks, and he served as the coordinator amongst the structural engineer, city planning department, building inspector, and his construction crew. He wasn't on-site daily and admitted that he doesn't have day-to-day jurisdiction over what the crew does, but he did visit multiple times a week to check on construction progress and discuss things in-person as needed. He was always prompt with emails and texts, keeping my husband and I constantly updated on where he was in terms of getting the plans approved, getting supplies to the site, vetting options for replacement lighting, choosing paint colors, etc. Although Lee had already factored in a few extra weeks for project completion, our timeline spanned longer than planned, from 9/9/20 to 11/7/20 (right before my parent-in-laws came to stay with us, phew!). We moved everything out of our bedroom into our guest bedroom (except things in our closet and bathroom) and made sure that someone was always home to let the crew in and out for the day, which did involve me asking my family to step in for a few days. While construction over the 9 weeks was inconvenient, it was a small price to pay for the finished product. And any small snafus that we brought up were resolved in a timely fashion. And what a finished product. Lee and his team did an absolutely amazing job. Overall, the sound dampening has improved significantly. While we can still hear heavy footfalls, vacuuming, and other loud noises, they're way more muffled than before, and the occasional nighttime noises are blocked by earplugs and white noise (which didn't work previously). We definitely can't hear the cats anymore, and when the bass is on low volume, we can't hear the bass either. It's not perfect, but it's honestly as close as it gets without redoing the entire house. And Lee and his crew went above-and-beyond, going so far as to find us a replacement LED bedroom lighting solution that would minimize exposure through the ceiling, among other details. Lee is a master craftsman. He fixed a problem I've had for years in the control room of my home studio. He quoted a bit more for an initial site visit than some of the other people I contacted which I initially found off-putting. But he had a good bedside manner on the phone, and sounded extremely knowledgeable and I came away feeling actually rather reassured by his pricing. I learned a lot when he came by and I was a bit surprised that I hadn't known some of these things already. I'm a pretty good audio engineer but well... let's just say, I was very pleased to be the beneficiary of someone who is as enthusiastic about structural engineering as myself. The noise from the traffic and people on the main road near my house had been bothering me ever since I moved into my apartment. It was a nightmare. Lee told me my problem was probably caused by a noise leak through my windows. I wanted to replace the original windows but Lee told me if we used the extra space in front of the windowsill and installed a second set of windows, the barrier of air trapped in between the two windows would decrease the sound much more than new windows alone. I'm in a building from 1914 living under a couple with 2 toddlers and an au pair, and knew we were looking at either a big job to insulate the unit, or moving out. We got consultations from a few different places, but knew immediately after speaking to Lee that we were going to go with him. Competitors came out to look at the space and explain their one-size-fits-all solution, but Lee's consult was well worth it even if we'd opted to go with someone else for a few reasons: 1. Lee asked about our specific concerns and got us thinking about tradeoffs (Where do we spend our time / hear the most noise? Is it airborne noise or impact noise? Which noises bother us the most?) 2. Lee is a HUGE sound nerd and a talker if you engage him - ask him anything about noise and what in your house contributes to it and he will school you for a couple hours, diagrams included. 3. The other consults we had consisted of measuring the space and pointing out which noises we heard would be better. Lee was the only one who pointed out structural quirks that may mean underlying complications. For example, he pointed out some latticing in the kitchen that would add scope if they were load-bearing beams underneath, and noted an old wall that turned out to need reinforcing for earthquake safety. In retrospect I'm surprised other companies were able to give us quotes without pointing out any of this - it'd be crazy going into a project of this size unaware of the unknowns, and I'm pretty sure a competitor would've surprised us with additional costs 3 weeks in. The project went a couple weeks over, but Lee erred on the side of over-communication throughout, and I appreciated the crew's attention to detail vs. rushing to meet a deadline (eg. instead of just putting back the crown molding, they floated it with a layer of acoustic sealant on top so it wouldn't act as a conduit for noise like before). Our old building was far from a straight-forward job, but Lee's decades of experience showed, and I don't think I would've felt so confident or at ease with anyone else. Oh, and the results are fabulous. I have some "before" audio recordings from an iPhone decibel app (impact noise upstairs would hit 65-70dB at my dining table/COVID workstation) and currently sounds barely register (disclaimer: my phone is not a precision instrument and does not pick up low-frequency footfalls which we do still hear). Cannot recommend Lee enough - if you're in the same boat send me a message and I'll talk him up even more! read more

Lee's crew remodelled the ground floor of our house this spring. While there were a variety of challenging circumstances, (we have an old Craftsman house and the workers encountered some 100 year old joists that had rotted and needed to be reinforced, and then COVID obv. delayed the project just before completion) the workmen could not have been more accommodating. They were extremely sensitive to the fact that remedying the noise problem inherently involves a good deal of construction noise and always sought to wrap up the day's progress before my children got home from school. Lee Brenner came to my home to assess exterior noise we had from a commercial business nearby. He recommended that we needed sound-proofing for our windows and skylights in our home. He asked for a $5000 deposit (the quote was much higher) because he needed to order windows for the work. It sounded reasonable because he promised that "all our noise problems would go away" and we could enjoy our home in peace. When the installer arrived the windows did not fit properly, and Lee would not give us a refund even though HE was the one that did the measurement! He told us that he would make the windows fit with "some adjustments". What?!? We paid good money for products custom-made for our needs. Why would they need "adjustments" unless they were recycled from another project? Buyers beware! read more

His knowledge and application utilizes the most current and up to date building techniques available. When all was said and done, the sound bar in my room set on full blast became inaudible only a few feet away in the next room over. I used Lee as a consultant to help me understand how to approach my noise problem (hobby woodworking shop in the garage, house kitchen on just the other side of the common wall/door). Lee was willing to do the necessary work, but he gave me such a good education that I decided to start an incremental approach myself (based on what he taught me). It worked beautifully. I can now run a screaming table saw and dust collection system in the garage, and have only a mild "hum" audible in the kitchen. Yes, Lee charged me a consulting fee for my education, but it turned out to be an enormous bargain. I purchased exactly the materials I needed to accomplish my goals, and didn't waste a penny on anything I didn't need. Perhaps most importantly, Lee kept me from pursuing techniques that wouldn't have worked nearly as well. Beyond that, Lee was a pleasure to work with and took an active interest in my project. It did take some time for him to get the windows after he ordered them, but this apparently had something to do with the manufacturer and not Lee. I bought a condo in an old building facing a busy street in the Mission in SF and wanted some insulation from the elements. I got three brand new windows in my bedroom, custom window screens throughout my condo, and also new seals and gaps filled all around my front door.
