I had a 700 sq ft rental that was in dire need of a new bathroom and kitchen. I called in Bay State Remodeling and one other company for a quote. Ray came out around April 2014 and took a look at the space, sending me a quote within a week or so. I was daunted by the size of project because: 1) I hadn't done anything like this before 2) My tenants were moving out for a set period of time 3) I was 5 months pregnant with toddler at home 4) I was working full time in a demanding job I also feared the quote was a high level one and was concerned about unseen costs, etc. In late September 2014, I called Ray back and asked if he would come back out to look again at the property and revisit the quote. I told him of a few changes I wanted to add to the scope and talked through each element which was more for my comfort level than anything else. Ray answered my questions patiently and I walked away with the confidence needed to schedule the demolition for the 3rd November. The communication with Ray up until this point was timely, always within 24 hours of receiving my call or email. 3rd of November arrived and the crew was on time and ready to go. I met David, my lead point person and Operations Manager who talked through the process. David touched base with me multiple times daily with updates, questions, concerns, etc. The demolition uncovered significant issues making the project a complete tear down to studs and a rebuild in both the kitchen and bathroom. David communicated the impact in timelines (from 3 weeks to 5 counting Thanksgiving break), Ray talked through and itemised the changes to the cost and they pretty much provided me with the info required to make guided and sound decisions along the way. They owned the problems encountered and arranged to get things sorted (additional plumbing & electrical work), and suggested cost effective enhancements that would improve the space. The crew are a fantastic bunch of individuals who instilled a level of trust and confidence: David: digitally connected which provided a level of communication daily that kept momentum going and the project on track. Graciously accepted deliveries and often picked up at Home Depot supplies required given I worked about 1 hour away from the property. No nonsense personality with the right amount of humor. Dali: collaborative with ideas for improving the design and brought photos of other things he had done for other clients in the bathroom. He suggested a cut out tile box on the surround tub wall, added 2 recessed lights in the bathroom ceiling and re-positioned the ceiling fan for a result that brightened and opened up the small bathroom without taking up the ceiling. Excellent tile work as well. Edilson: also collaborated with ideas on placement of kitchen cabinets and tile work. Edilson, in conjunction with Antonio, worked many late nights (Fri and Sat) at the end of the project to get the last pieces complete. Brilliant tile work, good suggestions to make small changes to minimise rental maintenance, ie adding tile as baseboard around kitchen perimeter to facilitate cleaning and increase durability. Both of them scrubbed the stove and dishwasher before re-installing; the appliances looked like new! In response to my request, they replaced both bedroom closet doors and build additional shelving and the final work looked amazing. The kitchen looked a dream when they were finished. I didn't meet the plumber or electrician but the work was done on time and to quality. The end result was gorgeous bathroom and kitchen that is TOO good for a rental and a huge step up from what it was. I have heard horror stories when dealing with other contracting firms. We purchased an 1874 house that needed significant work with plans for us to move out of our old condo within three months of closing and asked for the nearly impossible task of finishing enough of the work to allow us to move out of our old condo in time. We had multiple contractors come and evaluate and it seemed that no one would be able to accomplish the feat, as we had plans for taking down several walls and chimney, completely redoing the kitchen, two bathrooms, and major cosmetic and other work including new electric, new central HVAC, and updating the plumbing and hot water. Ray came and evaluated the project and despite others who had said they would not be able to get the project done in the time frame we asked, he said that his company Bay State would be able to accomplish this. I could tell immediately with his thorough approach on that first visit that we would be in good hands. They began demolition the day after we closed on the purchase and in a crazy three month period they were able to check off all the major projects and somehow allowed us to move in. After moving in they completed the remaining major items, and we are now checking off the last small detail work. David was our project manager and he juggled and coordinated the builders, electricians, plumbers, HVAC people, painters, flooring people, kitchen designer. He worked incredibly hard to make sure we were able to move our family in and that we were happy with the results. My wife and I have very demanding requirements for the details of the work, and he worked tirelessly to make sure that the end result was up to our very high standards. Marcio (aka the Doctor) was the main builder who did an amazing job constructing the bathroom, kitchen, built-ins, new windows etc. Jonathan and his electrician crew was fantastic and gave us the custom lighting and complete rewired and updated the entire system throughout the house. David (Mr Fix it plumbing) also did great work adding an additional sink in the kitchen, completely new hot water heater and even sent water and sewage up to the attic to prep for a future bed/bath renovation. John the HVAC guy also did a great job adding a second HVAC system and we now have a beautiful modern and custom house that retains the charm of its 1874 roots. Many of our friends have done renovation projects with other groups that take far longer or cost far more than the initial estimate. Bay state however kept to their time frame, and when something extra or unexpected came up (as is wont to happen with a 144 year old house that had not been worked on in many years) they always gave us options on how to address the issue in case we did not want to spend the extra money. Some months ago we decided to have our two small bathrooms remodeled. We live in a very early 20th century house which was initially a tile factory and we are reminded daily of some of the myriad problems associated with such an old and odd dwelling. I suspect that it must be close to fifty years since the bathrooms were last renovated. We received estimates from a number of contractors. We decided on Bay State after meeting with Ray Y, the owner of the company, who impressed us with his professionalism and commitment. In addition, we consider that the estimate he provided was very fair and appropriate. The work began in late June 2019. Every step of the way Yuri, the project manager, efficiently organized the various stages of the bathroom remodeling from demo day to the finish product. He was always available to talk about the project, present the different options, troubleshoot, and answer questions with a smile. We were abroad for awhile in the middle of the renovations and Yuri reached us by text and phone when needed. He was everything, and more, that one would wish for in a project manager. David, another manager, also provided superb guidance during the work. He was excellent at assessing and solving fast and judiciously any problem small or large. He and Yuri were a great team orchestrating a complex ballet of competent craftsmen who all did a splendid job. There was Dino the electrician, Shimon and Mike the plumbers, Paolo the painter, Paul the glass specialist for the bathtub enclosure, Francis who renovated the hardwood floor next to the bathroom, and Marcio, the framing specialist. Interacting with them all and with their teams was a pleasure. But the artisan we got to know best was Darly, a very talented tiler and carpenter. Part of the Jack and Jill bathroom is located in a dormer under the roof which made everything more complicated, in particular the installation of a barn door. Darly worked with admirable patience and great skill until it hung and closed just right. All personnel were excellent and are to be recommended. So, we have a brand-new bathroom with which we are very happy. We now look forward to the renovation of the second one this fall. It's likely that it too will pose some challenges. We are in the finishing stages of a full kitchen remodel with Bay State. I don't have adequate words to describe how responsive, professional, and reliable the team has been throughout the entire renovation. Yuri was our project manager and he is excellent. He had answers for everything, fixed problems that arose quickly and thoroughly, was responsive to and respectful of all of our questions, and was a joy to work with. Darly completed much of the work on our renovation, and his craftsmanship is impeccable. He does very high quality work and is very efficient. I had a great experience with Bay State, and now a great bathroom! Throughout the project, they were extremely accommodating and helpful. My neighborhood was a little logistically challenging in terms of parking, and for that reason a few companies did not want to do a project in the area, but Bay State helped to figure all of that out for me. Then through the project itself, they made me comfortable about all the choices I was making, giving me time to decide on what I wanted and giving me helpful tips as well for what might be feasible for my project. Most of all, I appreciated how professional and helpful Yuri and Darly were. Yuri was the point person for the project, who helped me with all of my questions and coordinated everything seamlessly even though I was in another country. He managed the project very well, anticipating my needs and helping me to balance budget and appearance. It was my first remodelling project and so I was often overwhelmed with decisions or hesitant, but Yuri sensed that and guided me through the process, and constantly gave me confidence that the project was going well. I had several last minute requests pop up as well, but he kindly accommodated everything. Darly was the main person working on the remodelling, and he was clearly very meticulous. My tiles in particular were challenging to work with, but I noticed the care he put into arranging them in the pattern I wanted, and refining the grout. He would also always notice little things in the bathroom, such as a nick in the paint or something that needed caulking, and patch it up before I even thought to ask. I would wholeheartedly recommend Bay State Construction. Everyone on their team was professional, responsive and reliable. In the beginning, as I was searching for help with my kitchen update, I was hesitant to hire a new construction company because I'd had problems in the past with other companies - unforeseen delays and intermittent communication. I also live in a historic pre-war apartment building in Cambridge that has strict rules about any construction. The Bay State team did everything according to the rules and were very professional about all the unusual requests made by the condo board. They did beautiful work for my kitchen renovation, even when, due to a clerical error (mine) with my condo board, I had to put off the renovation for a few months at the last minute. Though none of this was By State's fault, They found another space of time for me on their schedule so that the project did not have to be delayed too much into the future. I am so grateful for that. In addition, I have high standards for workmanship and also made some spontaneous changes along the way regarding appliances and other things, but Adrienne, Sabrina, Marcio, Darly and everyone else on the team responded and accommodated me in a very reasonable and helpful way. They even put down a very nicely-done cardboard cover in the apartment hallway so that the carpet in the common areas would not be damaged. I always felt that I could pick up the phone or email them with questions and concerns and they would get back to me within a day and most often sooner than that. Where do I start??!! This summer we bought a 100 year old colonial home in Newton that had incredible "bones" but that was in serious need of updating. We wanted to open up the kitchen and dining room. During the project we ultimately decided we wanted to open up an area that included a load bearing wall, and needed to move over an entire bathroom adjacent to this space, so we could have a bathroom and added laundry area. This was a very big project requiring an LDL to support the areas we were opening up AND the complete removal of a vestigial chimney hidden behind the old kitchen walls. Before we started the work, I had heard good things about Baystate from a friend so we called them up for an initial estimate. I thought they would be one of several we would interview. The crew from Baystate sold us right off the bat. And they did not disappoint. I can't speak highly enough of Ray, David, Marcio and the rest of the Baystate crew. We even added central air conditioning to this "old house" all the while! And the whole time, the crew worked together flawlessly! Plus, the subcontractors who came in! They were really top notch. We just completed a bathroom renovation with Bay State's team and had an excellent experience. Having an older home, we were anxious about doing a big renovation for fear of any surprises - the Bay State team was up front about what we could expect, and more importantly, what we could expect any surprises to cost us. One of the reasons we were anxious about doing a big project was the convenience and timing; being in Somerville, we were aware of how tough it can be to get inspections done and get the project moving. We are so happy that we chose Bay State for our apartment remodel. We had two and a half bathrooms completely redone, a load-bearing wall redesigned into an open room with columns, and a floor-to-ceiling kitchen overhaul along with many, many other small side projects (e.g.: closet doors moved, laundry room redesigned, floors refinished, fireplace redone). We had initial walkthroughs with Ray and David, and we were given an honest and thorough estimate at the start of our project which covered all the large and small changes we hoped to make. The entire Bay State team was gracious and communicative throughout the job, and they designed a gorgeous kitchen from scratch and checked for our approval at all the important stages. All the team members were fantastic--David was our amazing go-to man who was on-site whenever we had questions and Kami was our phenomenal (and patient!) project administrator who kept us on track and gave us frequent updates throughout the project. Mr. Fix-It Plumbing did a beautiful job with our bathrooms and Jonathan Moreira's team of electricians did excellent work with all our new fixtures and appliances. They are so professional. It was a joy to work with them. They did our kitchen(cabinets, tile, backsplash), removed all the wall papers and paint all the apartment, install new baseboards, install washer and dryer, build closets, upgrade our electrical panel. They were the best: started on the same day they promised and finished on time-I was so surprised that they made it on time consider all the unexpected events. Ofir and Marcio were very professional and had solutions for each problem. I recall 2 major problems: 1. We ordered our kitchen cabinets from Home Depot and received cabinets with the wrong measures! They just couldn't fit our tiny kitchen. We also got 2 cabinets with sink base. Ofir and Marcio FIXED the cabinets and basically made them fit our kitchen space. Also, Marcio changed one sink base to a cabinet with drawer. They did beautiful job in just one day-I was shocked. 2. Our Appliances for the kitchen were stocked inBest Buy warehouse and the employees say that our order is not there (even though in store, the computer showed that our order is there for 1 month)-eventually, Ofir drove to warehouse and waited there till he got all the appliances. It was a joy to work with them-They made the tedious renovation process to a joy. This is a company that you can trust. They still here after the renovation is done-when I have questions or issues they come and address that. read more

We live in an area with very little parking and the fun of city traffic, in an old brick townhouse with lots of steep stairs and tight spaces. As such, finding a contractor who wanted to deal with all of the hassles of a city reno was a challenge. Initially we were looking to have a small guest bathroom redone, with a walk-in shower converted to a tub/shower combo. Baystate impressed me right off the bat- Ray called me back to schedule a consult within 24 hours of my inquiry and David came back multiple times to figure out some of the tricky details of the job. While Baystate was not the least expensive quote we received, their attention to detail won us over. The whole team was super professional, polite and very concerned with making sure I was happy with everything they worked on. So much so that they ended up fixing some odds and ends around the house that weren't even part of the job! Eventually we enlarged the statement of work to include a laundry area redo, painting the whole interior of the house, fixing some water damage from the crazy winter's snow, replacing all the interior doors and door hardware and replacing the wood flooring in two rooms. Phew, so much work! Now our house feels almost brand new and we're already talking about our next project with Baystate. We highly recommend Bay State Remodeling & Refinishing. I'm a tough customer and was skeptical of hiring a company that I found on the Web. In the end, we're very happy we did. Andreina, our main contact, was a dream to work with. She's extremely responsive and thorough - she answers her own phone and never fails to provide information quickly and accurately. I absolutely loved working with her. Darly is a standout (so great), and all the workers were extremely friendly, prompt, clean, and courteous. We received a few estimates prior to selection, and Bay State's estimate was right in line with others. I was also afraid that they would find issues along the way that would increase the price. In the end, however, the final construction cost was in line with the estimate. They stayed on target with the timeframe too. Do some research on the cost of vanities, sinks, and plumbing supplies beforehand to get a sense of how much you want to spend. We ended up picking some higher-end items so the total cost was more than I expected during my initial planning. That, however, had nothing to do with the demolition and construction costs. Bay State stuck to their estimate. As a bonus, Bay State brought in a wonderful woman named Danielle to clean our house when the project was finished. We were fortunate to have found a company like Bay State for our remodeling project. They have been head and shoulders above any other contractors we've worked with. All of the Bay State folks, and the subcontractors they work with, genuinely take pride in the work they do. David, the project manager has been amazingly patient and listened to all of our concerns. All of our concerns and questions were quickly and fairly addressed. I am consitently impressed with the attention to detail Marcio and his crew give to everything they do. They make sure that everything they touch is done right, is solid as a rock, and looks good in the end. They listen to what you want but make adjustments based on their deep experience, knowing what produces the best result. Shimon, the plumber and Jonathan the electrician are true masters of their trades. This is particularly important for us since our house is 103 years old. They were able to anticipate my needs and adjust based on the age of the house, making sure that things were done right and up to code. David also took every opportunity to let us know where we could save money or if something seemed unnecessary - and even when our requests defied logic they were more than happy to take care of us. Working with Bay State Refinishing has been a total joy. My email questions had been answered promptly by Martha G. I appreciated that greatly and was one of the reasons I ended up picking Bay State Refinishing to work with instead of some of the other guys. When the time came for my tub to be resurfaced I had been told that the refinishers would be at my home between 1 & 3 pm. About noon time I got a call from Frank saying they were 20 minutes away and asked if that was ok. Absolutely it was ok!! When he and Jose arrived they were very professional, neat, organized. They told me exactly what they were going to do, when and why. They put drop cloths down; protective paper on the tub walls so nothing was touch outside of the spray zone. It just so happened that the weather was very bad the day my tub was being resurfaced but each and every time Frank or Jose had to go out to their van they made sure to wipe their feet before entering my home. They went out of their way to make sure they did not cause any kind of mess or damage. The precision with which they worked with was amazing. Frank had told me this would take about an hour an 20 minutes from start to finish. He wasn't kidding; they were done and loading up their van by 1:55PM. I wouldn't hesitate to tell people to use Bay State Refinishing if they were thinking of having their tub or shower resurfaced. read more

This summer I had Bay State remodeling and refinishing redid my bathroom. The people at Bay State were very friendly and courteous Bay State did the demolition of the bathroom, gutted it to the studs, they also converted the bathroom closet to a washer and dryer space, they did the tile on both floor and bathtub surround and installed vanity and two sets of closet doors, shelving and window. Through the process communication with the project manager Yuri was excellent. Yuri and the plumber were up to any challenge that came during the project in specific with the full size washer and dryer installation on the closet. Bay State kept my townhouse clean during the project and disposed all the building material upon completion. Bay State helped me with the material selection and ordering process, also when the material arrived they made sure that everything was complete and in good condition. My new bathroom now looks AMAZING; it's such a joy now to walk in to it The staff in the office and on site was professional and did excellent work. My husband and I are new homeowners so this was our first major project. We called several contractors for a quote to remodel our outdated bathroom and Ray was the only one who showed up on time. All of the quotes we received were comparable for the project but I chose Bay State based on reviews and Ray's first impression. The project consisted of gutting our bathroom and they installed a standup marble tile shower, ceramic floor, vanity, and washer and dryer. David was the project manager and he did a good job of communicating with us throughout the process. Darly and Adiso were great contractors who showed up on time every morning until the bathroom was complete. They were very professional and cleaned up after themselves everyday. We felt completely comfortable with them in our home even when we were not home. Darly did the tile work and he is truly talented. He takes great pride in his work and it definitely shows. Both, Adiso and Darly, pay close attention to detail and didn't cut any corners. I was having problems with my dryer vent so I called David. Darly and Adiso were at my house to fix the problem the next day. We need to do more renovations on our home and will definitely call Bay State.
